After having heard all the victims,

we hear the defendant's version.

on December 16th of last year,

accused of committing sexual abuse

during religious ceremonies.

to the case in São Paulo?

[Meireles] Given the line of defense,

there is not much to expect from it

because he basically keeps silent.

He denies everything

and says he doesn't know

any of those victims.

But our hope is that, some day,

he will break his silence,

and he will admit

to what he did all of those years.

It may be my personal opinion,

but he doesn't seem to have

any type of compassion for the victims.

So far

he hasn't shown any signs

of regret for anything he has done.

[man] His statement lasted

an hour and a half.

The medium said he doesn't remember

any of the women accusing him

of sexual harassment.

[woman] What did the judge ask you, John?

Did you admit to any crimes?

[John] God will answer that for you.

[Gualberto] John is a 78-year-old man

who needs supervision.

The defense suggested house arrest

with electronic surveillance,

which will not harm anyone.

Well, I'm here with Dalva.

who has something to say to us.

I'm surprised to have you here, Dalva.

And I'm glad that you have trusted us

with such an intimate story.

You're the daughter of one

of the most famous men in Goiás.

[man 2] From Brasília to Terra Rádio

[man] I only realized

who John of God really was

when I met a person in one

of the radio stations

I work in.

She was his daughter,

but I didn't know her.

She came to me

and told me she enjoyed the show

that she was a fan of mine,

and wanted to tell me a story.

One day, my father came

from Abadiânia with a white candle

and said, "Sweetie

put a mark on this candle for me."

I said, "How?" and he replied,

"Scratch it with you nail."

I did it and asked him why.

He said he was performing

spiritual work with me,

with Saint Ignatius of Loyola.

[Mendes] What happened next, Dalva?

[Dalva] Then he took all my clothes off,

he also took his off,

and he molested me the whole night.

When I was nine, almost ten,

he sexually abused me for the first time.

My father's abuse got worse and worse.

He always hit on me,

and asked me to sleep with him.

I couldn't stand it anymore.

At 14, I dated Tcheca,

my children's father,

without my father knowing.

And my father became really angry.

He told his people to call me.

It was about 3:00 p.m.

Then, he said,

"Are you pregnant?"

Then he trampled me down,

all over my belly.

He beat me with a cattle prod,

with those whips tipped

with a cement ball used in rodeos.

He didn't care if it hurt.

He beat me hard.

He felt sorry for it later.

He said, "Sweetie,

forgive me for what I've done."

After one week, he made me get married.

After a month,

he wanted to annul the marriage.

He didn't want me to be with Tcheca.

So I told him, "No, you made me do it,

now I'll stay married."

I got pregnant right after that.

I was 14, 15, 16 when I had my children.

One year later, I got divorced.

We fought a lot. We didn't get along well.

Honestly, I married him

to be free from my father

so he wouldn't abuse me anymore.

I spent my life going from place to place,

on the run, running away from him.

But he had told me, "If you're not mine,

you'll lose your children, your house,

you'll lose everything you have."

And I really did lose everything.

We started running out of food at home.

It got to a point

where my kids had nothing to eat.

I gave them bread, water, and sugar.

That's when,

seeing my kids crying and hungry,

I called my ex-husband and said,

"Tcheca, I'm sending you the kids."

And he said, "Okay."

I put the children in a taxi

and sent them there.

And I told him,

"I just need to get back on my feet."

And he said, "Okay."

I didn't see my kids for eight years.

They wouldn't let me see my kids.

I hit rock bottom.

One day, I hitchhiked to Abadiânia

because I didn't have money.

My dad found out I was in Abadiânia.

Then he came to me and said,

"Forgive me," and this and that.

"Now things will be different."

And I told him, "I'm not coming back here.

I don't want to be closer to you."

"No, I'll give you everything, Dalva."

"Everything, including your kids."

When he said

he was going to give me my kids,

I fell apart.

He asked me,

"Do you wanna be with your kids?"

I said, "More than anything."

He said, "So you will have to be mine."

One of my sons

saw me passing by in the car.

He came to me.

He hugged me.

In prison for a year now,

John of God was sentenced today

to 19 years and four months

of detention for sex crimes.

He also faces 12 more accusations.

DECEMBER 19, 2019

This is John of God's first conviction

for these crimes.

In addition to the complaints,

other cases have already passed

the statute of limitations.

So far, 319 possible victims

have been identified.

When I saw my dad being arrested,

I felt relief.

I was very scared

he would hurt my children.

I knew that if he hadn't been arrested,

he would've hurt them.

Not him personally. He gives the orders.

Hi, Gabriela. How are you?

Looking back at this whole year,

it's good to end with this verdict,

with a sentence

that's favorable for the victims.

feeling so light-hearted,

so happy to be a state prosecutor.

We were touched by all the victims,

We'd often cry with those victims.

I remember that I'd feel

really fragile and helpless,

but at the same time, I'd feel emotional

about giving hope to all these women.

[Brito] I'm a strong woman,

but I'm also very sensitive,

and that reflects my career choice

dealing with and treating human beings.

As a physical therapist,

I can express myself

and be very close to my essence.

When I think of what happened to me,

of my vulnerability,

of ending up at that Home,

but when there's a human being there,

even if I had never heard about John,

I projected this image

I created of him as this savior.

Hold this for me.

You must give it to me when I ask you.

Give that to me. Walk away.

You can go.

[Brito] When a person is given

all that power he had been given,

we saw then when people unmasked him.

There were famous people,

artists, so many people who deified him.

Imagine what went through his head.

Of course he felt powerful.

But when there's a human being there,

who had been given all that power,

and everything

that people insisted on giving him

You must question yourself

because there is no such thing.

So that's it. You must question.

I'm so brave.

What happened to me back there,

a fact, an event.

This is not fate.

I can say that

what happened to me brought change.

And I consider it a process

of change and transformation

which helps me with healing.

more than ever,

I turned to her and said,

"See? I was telling the truth!"

"See how deep it was?"

- I've never doubted you.

- I know,

but I made sure to emphasize

that I had lived through that.

The story I had told you wasn't made up.

[Avila] There was substance and evidence.

Exactly. I was able

to prove that to people.

It set me free.

I was able to prove to people

what had happened to me,

that the story I had told them,

there were other people telling

the same story.

I think that if there was only one woman,

the story would've gone nowhere.

[Araújo] Exactly.

Like it happened many times.

They tried it.

I'm outraged because it took all of this

for people to believe the victims' words.

Right?

- But I've never doubted you.

- Thank you.

I had someone in my life

who helped me go through

this process of healing.

When I was in denial,

when I wanted to give up living,

she was there for me.

I picked myself up

because I had rejected myself so much

that I needed to rebuild myself again.

I needed to see myself again.

Who are you?

Who are you after so many wounds?

After so many scars?

What kind of woman are you?

What answer will you be giving

to the world with all this?

I think that as time went by,

the more I told people about it,

I didn't feel ashamed anymore.

"Yes, I was abused."

"Yes, that happened to me.

Yes, I'll show my face. Yes, it's me."

I have no reason to hide. It's my story.

It obviously hurts. It hurts a lot.

It leaves wounds, like I said.

It leaves physical scars on my body

that I don't wish on anyone.

But today,

I can look at it with different eyes.

I can see myself a different way.

I wanna live.

And this has awakened me.

He hasn't taken away my faith.

When I found Candomblé,

my heart stayed in it.

I always believed in it.

I find myself in this religion.

I feel at peace. I feel good with it.

It's like a shoulder.

It embraces you. It shelters you.

You have the drums, the beats

after what happened to me in Abadiânia,

It's obvious that before,

there was a lot of money circulating.

Dollars and foreigners.

Lots of foreigners.

And this generated

a circulation of wealth, right?

So there's this feeling of mourning.

Here it is.

These rooms are empty now

so if you want to look at them,

these were adapted

for people with disabilities.

They all have two or three beds.

And here

Just so you have an idea,

I own a small inn like this,

I was fully booked until 2023.

Now it's just loss.

[John] Normally, we fail to thank God

for everything we receive.

And it's important to understand

there are circumstances

in our lives which are challenges,

and many times are painful

due to what we have

to retrieve in this life.

Because when we came to Earth,

we didn't come to enjoy it.

We came here to perform a work.

Some of our brothers

and sisters hesitated about their faith.

I talked to many people

with brothers and sisters

who came here every week,

who lost their trust

because they let themselves go

and had their minds polluted

by everything that was said.

The Home without Mr. John

continued to do his work as he taught it.

We kept seeing

and receiving people for visits.

We kept offering them the same work

he solidified over his years of work.

[Wagner] We are here

because we love the Home.

We have faith in it

for the works performed here,

for the people who come to be cured.

It's our responsibility.

[interviewer] So now, Jardel,

are you an employee here?

- You're not a volunteer?

- [Wagner] No. I'm a volunteer.

- [interviewer] You don't get paid?

- No, I don't.

I get help from the entities,

from the spirituality.

What I do for a living, my daily bread,

is my work with transportation.

People call me

if some want to have a tour.

And I do it.

No wonder I'm here,

and my family is in Rio Grande do Sul.

My mom and my kids.

I do miss them,

but I'm committed to this place.

That was my promise and I'll keep it.

[Homercher] In 25 years, I got to know

a bit of every sector at the Home.

My favorite thing here was hearing

the medium

or the entity discharge someone.

They'd say,

"Son, you're cured. You can go now."

It's over. There's nothing there anymore.

You're discharged.

[Homercher] "Father,

I can be discharged now."

Sometimes he looked me in the eye.

I cried, but he looked at me

with so much love and patience

that I felt I couldn't, you know?

And I'd accept it a little longer.

I also think a lot about

this deadline he gave me.

Somehow, either through medium John

or through the entities themselves,

when the time comes

for me to be discharged,

he'll let me know

that I am healed and can leave.

STATE PROSECUTOR'S OFFICE IN GOIÁS

The state prosecutors of Goiás

must present today

another complaint against the medium.

The religious man is already a defendant

in cases of r*pe

and r*pe of vulnerable persons.

[Meireles] Good morning, everyone.

Thank you for coming.

Today's subject is a new report

against Mr. João Teixeira de Faria.

It's important to point out

that up to today,

victims are still contacting

the local prosecutors

and whenever new information is released,

other victims feel empowered

to come to us.

So it's always important

to talk about the case.

[Gualberto] The way we see it

there's strong media pressure

in regards to this case.

It turns out that

this case makes people uncomfortable

when they analyze John's processes.

The problem is he is John of God.

If he was John Doe,

some random John, or some John Smith,

this case would be closed.

He would be at home under house arrest.

JANUARY 20, 2020

[woman] The medium John of God

was sentenced once more.

[man] This was John of God's

third sentence

since his arrest in December 2018.

[woman 2] In total, the sentences reached

63 years and four months of prison.

[Gualberto] It's not easy

for anyone receiving the news

that you were sentenced

for something you didn't do.

But we are very confident

that when these lawsuits

make their way to higher courts,

we will be able

to separate the wheat from the chaff

and show that this is

one of the biggest cases of injustice

committed by

the Brazilian judicial system.

We will live to see it.

There is justice

with courts following the case.

We have a whole population

that is outraged about what happened.

The whole international community

is outraged

because many people came from abroad.

A lot of people.

They were deceived by John of God.

I don't feel sorry for John of God.

I just want him alive

for a very long time.

I want him to feel remorse someday

for what he has done.

[Dalva] My father

lost interest in other women

so he started stalking me.

Anywhere I went, he went after me.

He'd send messages.

I thought, "I'm all grown up." So I left.

I went to São Paulo.

I was there for another six years

without seeing my children.

Then I started doing heavy drugs.

I used them to forget.

Then he found out where I was.

He had them bring me

to Abadiânia from São Paulo.

I arrived very weak, very skinny.

He put me in a clinic.

He went there one day

with Mr. Ronivan, his lawyer,

asking me to record a video

in which I should deny everything

that had happened between us,

because my children wanted

to harm him and me as well.

So if I wanted my children to be alive,

I had to record that video.

I want to say to everyone

that this sweet man next to me

has never committed

any sexual abuse with me.

He has never left me unassisted.

Nor my kids, my siblings,

my nephews and nieces.

What you're doing to him is unfair.

It's all about money.

I'm sorry for everything, Dad.

[Dalva] Ronivan would say, "Pet his hair."

"Say the accusations are false."

So I recorded the video.

When he found out

that I was discharged three days later,

that I had left the clinic,

he went mad.

So he sent his people after me

to pressure my kids

to dismiss the charges against him.

[man] You pressed charges

against your grandfather, John of God.

[man 2] Yes.

[man] Has he tried to bribe you

so you'd dismiss those charges?

I recorded one

of the conversations we had last week.

DALVA'S SON - 2016

He asked his sons to come after us,

after my mom.

He offered her a house and assistance

in exchange for her

talking us out of suing him.

It's recorded when I said,

"Mom, we're still alive."

"We're going forward with the charges

because you are not the only victim."

"There are other victims as well."

"Let's go on with those charges

and justice will be served."

"He says he can bribe anyone,

but someone will help us eventually."

[Mendes] When I interviewed Dalva,

I'm not sure

how this information got to John of God.

Dalva herself advised me

not to publish the story

because her dad was a very powerful man.

Very rich and had branched out

his influence to all dimensions of power.

She told me she had no doubt that,

if I published this report,

without greater support,

he could order to have me k*lled.

So because of that, because of his power,

most of all his economic power,

and also after discussing it

with my family,

I decided not to publish it at that time.

The first opportunity I had,

and I felt safe doing that,

I gave the material to the press.

he has something that I can't explain,

but it's definitely not from God.

I'm sure of that.

My dad's gift is crying.

Crying when he does something wrong.

Crying and saying that he doesn't heal,

I depend upon people's help,

I live here because someone lets me.

I eat with the help of my daughter,

but every now and then, I feel depressed

because there's still

a lot to be clarified and to be solved.

And I think it's gonna take a while.

I hope justice prevails.

there's no possibility of conviction

in regards to the acts against her.

That's because the statute of limitations

has already expired.

Today, Mr. João Teixeira is 78 years old.

This means the statue of limitations

for his crimes is cut by half.

That's my main battle now.

That the statute of limitations for crimes

of r*pe and m*rder of a woman in Brazil

have no expiration

because this favors

the evil rapists and murderers of women.

[Mannelli] After I gave

my statement to the court,

I understood how important

it was to come forward.

I understood that I wasn't alone

in this universe.

That this universe is much bigger than me.

HIGH RATES OF FEMICIDE

about the launch

of the Justice Wears a Skirt Institute.

I'm here with Gabriela Manssur,

a state prosecutor,

who is also a founder of the institute,

and with Andrea Mannelli,

who is the Director of Communication

and Content of the institute.

Many reasons led me

to create this institute.

First of all, the great number of people

who dedicate themselves voluntarily

to fight and promote women's rights.

And we understand that women don't

just want to report the attacker,

they also need to be included

in public policies,

in projects that help them

get back on their feet,

reconstruct themselves

after being violated,

so they can recover their self-esteem.

[Mannelli] As I got closer to Gabriela,

I understood a little bit of her fight.

Then she invited me.

She said, "Look.

You represent the pain of these women."

"You represent the side of the victim."

We have this important role with society

and the institute

is here to help with that,

to support the victims.

You have to reach out.

You have to embrace these victims.

You have to help them

get out of the situation of the victim.

- Hi, Mom, how are you? Hi, Dad.

- Hi. I'm good.

How about you? Wow, how pretty.

This is what women want:

justice and a decrease in pain.

Many of them, like Andrea and like me,

we transformed the pain into strength

so we can fight for other women.

This violence is painful, it has shape,

color, a first name, and a last name.

It's real, it exists.

Not talking about it

won't make it disappear

or cease to exist.

You're very brave. You are a warrior.

in regards to women.

It's a country that destroys women,

that kills 12, 13, 14, 15 women a day

just because they're women.

Not in a robbery or something,

not in a tragedy.

They die because they're women.

Look how disastrous that is for a country,

a country that doesn't respect someone's

life because the someone is a woman.

A country where you don't respect

someone's sexual rights

because they're a woman.

JUSTICE WEARS A SKIRT INSTITUTE

And I'm sure that February 18, 2020

will be forever remembered by all of you

with the launch

of the Justice Wears a Skirt Institute.

This pain belongs to all of us,

and to the whole society

when Brazil has the 5th-highest rate

in the world of women being k*lled.

So we need to talk about this.

I'm not saying we will overcome this pain.

The pain exists

and will continue existing.

If you don't face it

and take ownership of it,

it'll haunt you for the rest of your life.

And I don't intend on having this ghost

living with me for the rest of my life.

I am a victim

of one of the most famous cases

of violence against women in this country,

maybe in the world,

the case of the medium,

João Teixeira de Faria.

And this led to my biggest contribution.

Only those who felt the pain, the disgust,

the sadness, and the fear

of this type of violence

are able to understand

the nightmare that this is.

I transformed my pain into strength.

My intelligence became a powerful weapon.

My dedication became investigation.

And my voice

became an instrument for my fight.

And I realized that you can be

the star of your own story.

Even though it's a winding road,

you are the one who writes the ending.

[man] Almost four million people

have already been infected

by COVID-19 worldwide.

A report released today

by the Imperial College of London

3,982,724 CASES

275,759 DEAD - 1,376,230 RECOVERED

states that Brazil

will face an expl*si*n of cases

if the country

doesn't adopt stronger isolation measures.

[woman] Researchers

from the University of Goiás

say that the state could be

the new epicenter

of COVID-19 in the country.

[man] John of God is a defendant

in 11 different cases for sexual abuse,

r*pe of vulnerable persons, fraud,

and ill*gal possession

of firearms and ammunition.

[woman] His lawyers have

already requested John of God's release.

They are requesting

the medium serves his sentence at home

with electronic monitoring.

In regards to his freedom

the biggest question we have is:

"What would be the harm in letting

a world-famous man serve his time at home

with 24-hour electronic monitoring?"

What kind of damage would come from that?

All of the victims have been heard.

All of the witnesses have been heard.

His sentence is already up to 60 years.

If he had a million years more,

it wouldn't make a difference.

So what harm would it cause?

What we have here,

as we see it,

is an individual who is sentenced

to more than 60 years

for heinous crimes,

who, according to a medical report

from the court itself,

is capable of meeting all

of the conditions

to serve his sentence in prison.

We don't see a reason for this individual

to serve his time at home.

I would also like

to thank our beloved medium,

João Teixeira de Faria,

this man who dedicated his life

to this place

and who, through Don Ignatius' phalanx,

has the power of healing.

The court system has granted

house arrest to John of God,

sentenced to more than 40 years

for sexual crimes.

[woman 2] The decision takes into account

the risk of contagion

with the new coronavirus.

The defense lawyers requested

that he serves his time at home

due to his old age and health issues.

John of God is 78 years old and has been

in prison for a year and four months.

The state prosecutors of Goiás

said they will appeal the decision.

about the accusations that came to light?

Everyone who preached the word of God

were nailed to the cross,

even His son was nailed to the cross.

If he went, why wouldn't I?

What I told the authorities

is what happened,

not what people are saying.

[Brito] When I heard the news

about his release from prison

and being under house arrest

he gets to be just like us

because it's a situation

in which everybody is isolated

because of the pandemic.

So

it's the same.

How come?

That monster,

a man who is capable of evil things.

How come he is at home like us?

House arrest?

We're all in house arrest right now.

How come?

It's like being stabbed.

Stabbed in the back.

Damn.

the ab*ser was free and I was imprisoned.

Not only imprisoned in life,

in my day-to-day life,

but also in my anguish,

in my feelings.

This became a prison for us.
