i bought a beetle picking up the place

i'll get rid of it don't do that wizzy

beetles are an important part of the

greenhouse ecosystem eco

system

an ecosystem is all the living and

non-living things in a particular place

interacting and working together to help

each other survive and thrive like this

desert deserts are full of life and lots

of non-living stuff but they all work

together like in which our living

organisms helps break rocks down into

sandy soil a non-living thing on hot

days scorpions living things burrow into

the sandy soil to stay cool and round

and round it goes

a redwoods forest another ecosystem

these giant trees are living things and

so are the plants on the ground and the

birds and the animals in the branches

they all depend on each other and the

non-living things like the soil holding

the roots of these giant trees and the

fog the fog yes fog is non-living

moisture that the trees soak up through

their bark

speaking of moisture oh you know this

this coral reef is also an ecosystem

made of living and non-living things

and they all need each other to survive

ah nothing like creamy oatmeal for

uh oopsie did i forget to tell you about

the honey strike

that can't be a honey strike oatmeal

without honey is like honey without

oatmeal well it just started last week

on the zoolan island of gardenia one day

the flowers beetles and bees all just

walked off the job seems each group felt

they were the most important part of how

honey is made and nobody but nobody was

willing to budge

so

no honey is being made

but our oatmeal our tea

our biscuits

this looks like a job for the zuma

patrol

if we're going to talk to the garden

creatures we'll need to shrink down to

their size stand by to size arise

now i know how a ladybug feels

where is everyone listen beetles are the

best beetles are the best beetles are

the best whoa whoa

what's going on here

i'm beethoven beetle the other domestic

beetles and i are officially on strike

we know because we had zero honey at

breakfast hey don't blame us we're just

asking for a little respect after all we

beetles are the most important workers

in the garden we chew up the waste

dropped by the flowers and bees and then

oops i accidentally spilled some dew off

one of my petals

silly me

and it's we flowers who are the true

heroes we make the nectar that's turned

into honey besides we're so tall so

gorgeous so fragrant so so

i'm tired of hearing both of you go on

about being the best bees are the most

important we're the ones who make the

honey that's just the kind of goofy talk

i'd expect from a flighty bee

flighty you heard him buzzby blighty

i don't know what you the whole garden

ecosystem has stopped working all this

bickering seems so silly especially when

the flowers are so obviously the most

important part it all starts with them

no way i'm a pilot i know how tough it'd

be to land on a shaky flower without

bees to collect nectar there'd be no

honey watch out

you go buzzby zeeter beetles have the

toughest job working down in the mulchy

muck turning waste into nutrients for

ungrateful flowers they deserve gold

stars that's a laugh they crawl on the

ground and eat stuff even my cousin phil

can do that you're both wrong

excuse me but you told us this was an

ecosystem

living and non-living things all work

together

not one against the others and that

means that there's no star player that

it's a great team just like

well the zoo patrol oh dear me you're

right

we should act like the team we are and

show the gardenians the real nature of

well nature but

how i've got an idea buzzing around my

head everyone listen up this is an

ecosystem which means you all have

important jobs to do right

plants like wilhelmina here are called

producers which means they make their

own food out of non-living things like

sunlight and water and their flowers

make a sweet drink called nectar to

attract birds and bees ah birds they're

so annoying all they want to do is show

you pictures of their eggs what

now let's say this spiffy zula ship is a

bee i know i know the colors are all

wrong but bear with me here these go

from plant to land drinking their

flowers nectar easy easy zeter relax the

petals of many flowers have a special

pattern to guide these into position

i'll just activate the ship's

ultraviolet light even though we can't

see ultraviolet light these can so this

is how they see the petals the flowers

make it easy to find their nectar

made it but each flower's nectar is only

a sip so bees buzz from flower to flower

impressive cedar's almost as good a

pilot as us bees

almost bees are consumers consumers

can't make their own food like plants do

they consume or feed on the nectar

flowers produce which some turn into

honey to store us food for winter and to

feed their young right now check out the

landing pods on our ship what's all that

fuzzy yellow stuff

pollen by carrying pollen from one plant

to another the bees help the flowering

plants reproduce or make more plants we

do

they do

positively so bees are consumers and

plants are producers but they need

sunlight soil and nutrients to grow and

for their flowers to produce nectar

that's where us beetles come in right

precisely

beetles and other creatures on the

ground eat waste products of living

things and the remains of dead plants

and animals

and then they break them down or

decompose them into nutrients which go

right back in the soil wait a minute

does that mean

that's right our friend beethoven is the

decomposer i'm so proud

these same decomposers also help water

and air get into the soil with the

digging and tunneling and producers like

plants and flowers take nutrients from

the ground to grow and to create nectar

for the bees so the bees will distribute

their pollen so the beetles can eat the

leftovers and break them down into

nutrients which the flowers use okay i

get it i get it

thanks i was running out of breath so

we're all part of a big cycle our system

and ecosystem

these plants beetles as well as the

non-living things soil air sunlight and

moisture exactly

the living things all need each other

and the non-living things to survive

ecosystems have a plan

produce consume and decompose

then it all begins again

and that is how the cycle goes producers

they make all the food consumers get to

eat it

and

decomposer break it down and that's how

they complete it

this nifty chart the living things in an

ecosystem have different roles as

producers consumers or decomposers

producers like plants make their own

food out of non-living things like

consumers like bees and other animals

can't make their own food like plants do

they depend on producers for their food

and decomposers like beetles eat waste

products of living things and the

remains of dead plants and animals and

then break them down or decompose them

putting nutrients back in the soil which

helps to nourish the producers

gorgo wonders how an ecosystem can be

balanced well an ecosystem is a place

where all the living and non-living

things work together to help each other

it's kind of like the zoo patrol where

everyone has an important job

oh right but in an ecosystem it's plants

animals and even sunlight and soil that

have jobs to do that's right

but you forgot to mention earthworms how

important can a worm be

why many ecosystems would be completely

out of balance without earthworms

let's investigate ecosystems in the

multopedia

an ecosystem is in balance when

everything works together living in

non-living things all play a part there

are producers consumers and decomposers

producers like plants trees and flowers

make food using sunlight and they

themselves can be food for many living

animals consumers like bees and birds

and other animals depend on those plants

or other organisms for their food

lastly there are decomposers like

mushrooms some beetles and earthworms

they eat the waste of producers and

consumers as well as the remains of dead

plants and animals and turn it into

minerals and nutrients then they add the

nutrients back into the soil to be used

by future producers like plants so

decomposers like earthworms put

nutrients into the soil for the

producers who can then make food for the

consumers like many animals and the

waste from the producers and some from

consumers helps provide nutrition for

the decomposers with each part of the

ecosystem doing its job it all stays in

balance

okay we get it earthworms are part of

the ecosystem but it still doesn't seem

like much work

yeah they must have the easiest job in

the solar system you know if you want to

see for yourselves i have an old friend

who can get you into camp worm

it's a training ground for young

earthworms and it can be pretty tough oh

of course if it sounds too tough tough

one of the most important worm skills is

knowing how to aerate the soil what do

we mean by air eight air eight

the number after air seven

aerating is what happens when worms

tunnel into the ground our tunnels help

keep the soil loose enough for the roots

of plants and trees to grow

at the same time we're mixing air water

and nutrients into the soil will there

be a test on this

but how are we supposed to do that uh

yeah we're not worms the rumor is you

said you could do anything worms do

that was some of the worst digging i've

all of them you're not worms until you

can eat at least half your weight a day

green this is no time to slack off you

still have to digest and process process

that's right food like the leaves we

earthworms eat is digested inside our

bodies and eventually becomes waste

called castings it's our castings that

add nutrients to the soil producers like

plants use these nutrients and after you

finish eating and casting how about more

aerating let's

look it says the whole camp's going on a

mulch diving trip tomorrow

finally some real fun

leaves and waste are piling up nothing

is being processed so the plants aren't

getting their nutrients which means they

won't be able to produce food for the

animals we need earthworms

and we're the worst ones in the whole

camp at doing worm stuff what do you

mean worse you may still be wet behind

the ring

but you've got heart actually we've got

five pairs of hearts then what are we

standing around for this is a job for

the worms uh and the zuma patrol

are tiny but they are an important part

worms certainly do a great big job even

though they look very small especially

from way out here

remember how these little worms keep an

ecosystem balanced they balance it on

their heads actually earthworms are part

of a group called decomposers of course

they do more than that but their main

job is to consume animal and plant waste

and put nutrients back into the soil

they can eat over half their weight a

day and their waste known as castings is

full of nutrients by wriggling through

the soil aerating they mix those

nutrients and other bits of soil

together making the soil richer and

stronger better for growing the plants

that feed the animals and keep the

ecosystem strong those little worms do

all that i can't even keep my room

cleaned

so remember worms may be small but

they're mighty important
