solar system. She's a special planet for

lots of reasons. Earth goes around the

sun just far enough away to keep from

getting too hot and just close enough to

keep from getting too cold. This makes

Earth just right for people, plants, and

animals to live.

It's the only planet in the solar system

that is known to have living things on

it.

As you can see, most of Earth's surface

is covered by water.

Does that mean Earth is made out of

water?

Oh, no. Planet Earth is mostly made up

of metal and rock. It's just the surface

that has so much water. The top of the

Earth, called the crust, is made mostly

of rock. Under that crust is more rock

that gets hotter and hotter and begins

to melt when you get really deep down.

The center of the Earth is made of

liquid and solid metal. Let's see for

ourselves.
