once upon a time in a far away land

there was a poor couple who lived in a

small Cottage By the Sea every day the

woman tended the vegetables and herbs in

their Garden while her husband caught

fish for their meals although they had

very little the couple used a great deal

of imagination in preparing their meals

flavoring them with herbs and spices

from the garden and salt taken from the

sea my dear you are the best cook in the

land in another part of the land far

from the sea was the Palace of the queen

every night the Lords and Nobles from

throughout the kingdom would Feast at

Great

Banquets these dinners are all starting

to taste the same to me the queen chefs

certainly do lack imagination

yes it's a Pity all her wealth and all

this food yet it's all so tasteless the

criticism of her guests troubled the

queen deeply the next morning she sent

for the Royal

scribe let the word go out across the

land whomsoever can bring flavor and

Imagination to the Royal kitens shall

never want for anything again and so a

stream of Messengers went out to every

part of the land in search of the chef

who could bring the art of imaginative

cooking to the Palace time passed and

one by one they returned with nothing

except for the Queen's two favorite

Messengers they had ventured all the way

to the

Sea yes my friend and I have been

traveling for many days we're exhausted

not to mention starved he hasn't let me

stop to eat since the last Village could

you possibly sell us some food we were

just about to have our dinner we'd be

glad to share what we

have wow Yoo yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah

meanwhile at the palace the queen was

despondent nothing any of her Court

gestur did could console her food a poor

couple humble

delicious so off went the queen in

search of the couple's secret of good

taste Arise My

subjects I have heard reports from my

messengers of the wondrous smells and

tastes that emanate from your kitchen I

have come to see for myself if these

Tales are true the couple worked

feverishly using their herbs and spices

in aund different ways and then came the

moment for the queen to take her first

bite

H now let's see what those fussy Dukes

have to say friends if you will give my

chefs The Secret of your kitchen you

shall have your heart's desire but the

couple politely refused any reward they

explained that their secret was really

no secret at all they had simply learned

to use what they had in new and

different ways the queen was so excited

that she begged him to come live with

her at the palace thank you your majesty

but we are content with our life here by

the Sea they gave the queen spices and

salt to take back to the Palace she knew

she had learned a valuable lesson that

all her money could not buy with a poor

couple through Ingenuity and hard work

were able to give

yourself this is a sand painting it's an

art invented by an American Indian tribe

hundreds of years

ago these kids have a special interest

in learning about the art and lives of

Indians because they are Native American

Indians

too sure they go to school watch TV play

baseball and do all of the other things

that kids do but they also take pride in

learning some of the ways of their

Indian

culture who are

Indians the name Indian comes from

India that's where the European explor

thought they were going when they sailed

West their Maps didn't even show an

American continent when they hit land

they mistook it for India and call the

people

Indians but the people of America had

their own names not one overall name

like Indians but separate names for each

group or tribe names like mcmack which

means saltwater people and Hy which

means the peaceful people

or Cheyenne which means simply the

people there are more than 500 different

tribes just in North America okay my

name name is Nelson Hopper and I'm from

the Clear Lake Pomo Tribe my tribe is

Miwok Leno I'm of the Navajo

tribe and uh actually that really says

it all right there belonging to a tribe

is like belonging to a very big family

it is an important connection no matter

where and in Indian may

live Native Americans from different

tribes can be as different as say a

Swede and an

Italian long before the explorers came

the American Indians had found many

different ways to

live in some areas the people lived in

tent-like houses called tepes which were

easily moved to follow the best hunting

other tribes planted crops and built

more permanent houses like the southwest

Indians whose Pueblo may have been the

first apartment

houses fishing was the main source of

food for the Northwest Coast tribes they

built sturdy lodges from giant redwood

trees and there were many other ways of

life for the first

Americans but things have changed since

those days just as the set settlers

don't live in log cabins or Prairie Huts

anymore many Indians no longer live in

lodges or

tepes Native Americans are part of

modern

America this Indian man is an

architect this Native American woman is

a

doctor there are American Indian

construction

workers researchers

computer

programmers and so

on but the older ways do not just

disappear almost all of these Native

Americans feel a deep loyalty to the

lives that Indians used to live

for many years American Indians were

told to be like the white men to adopt

those ways but the Indian ways are just

as beautiful and valuable and just as

important for the young people to

learn Matthew why don't you pick a

leaf California Indians would just sniff

the bay leaf to clear their sinuses or c

cure their

headaches these kids are learning about

another part of their Native American

culture the old ways were rich in

knowledge about animals and

plants American Indians were the first

to grow tomatoes corn and many other

crops now raised all over the

world many of the plants they use for

curing illness are being rediscovered by

modern medicine

Native Americans lived in harmony with

nature taking only as much as they

needed there was little waste no

pollution for at least 25,000 years the

native Indian tribes were careful

Guardians of the American

continent let's hope that those who've

come after can do as well

hi this is Woody how are you or should I

say KO is like the Spanish do for today

we're making a Mexican treat called

guacamole it can't be beat Mexican amans

throughout the states love wacamole they

think it's great and so it is as you'll

soon see so get in your gear and follow

me two avocados two avocados here and

one tomato one tomato my dear I can

hardly wait to have a taste of that

delicioso avocado paste we'll need two

green chili peppers that's true but if

you can't get fresh ones cat ones will

do and it's a good idea to have a

grownup along just to make sure that

things do not go wrong now first you

have to peel the avoc ocado then mash

them up along with the Tomato then chop

up the roasted Chili Peppers add a

little salt and mix up all the goodies

together now what you got is a fabulous

dip to serve with corn our potato

chipe and when you have passed the

guacamole around you'll be so surprised

at all the friends you found for

everyone allows a new taste treat

whether they're from Mexico or 18th

Street another nice thing about avocados

is the wonderful thing you can do with

the pit just place it in water then put

it in the dark and after some days

you'll see it start to grow then take

the pit plant it in a pot and what do

you think that you have got the

beginning of what will turn out to be a

great and Noble avocado tree make some

guacamole then FL a tree
