In the midst of a romantic getaway,

And I was there on the saturday morning on my own.

Elaine rarely gets this kind of time to relax

With three grown children living close by

And the youngest still at home.

But her tranquility comes to an abrupt end.

[ Cellphone rings ]

Hello.

Mum, it's me.

Have you heard from sian?

Narrator: it's her eldest son, liam,

Concerned about his 22-year-old sister, sian.

No. Why, what's happened?

Just had a call from kevin.

Sian didn't make it home last night.

It's the first time sian's gone awol

Since moving in with kevin 3 months ago.

Pickford: they'd been seeing each other a couple of years.

Sian was more serious about kevin

Because she did evoke, sort of, quite a formal,

"Kevin's going to be coming around for dinner.

Can you please be nice to him?"

She was out with some friends, didn't make it back.

Kevin's pretty worried.

Well, it's still quite early.

Maybe he's just overreacting.

Pickford: I wasn't overly concerned

Because it was only sort of nine, half nine in the morning,

And at the time,

I remember saying she's probably stayed at mate's last night.

Narrator: after all, sian has a lot of friends.

Pickford: she was very vibrant person.

She always had a big smile.

Just one of those sort of people

That most people would be very happy to be around.

You know, she got on with everybody, really.

[ Dialing ]

Narrator: elaine tries to reach sian herself.

Pickford: the phone rang,

And I left a voice message.

Sweetie, where are you?

You know, "we're trying to get hold of you.

Kevin's worried about you."

Can you give me a call back as soon as you can?

[ Beep ]

Narrator: the family's used to sian turning up late on occasion.

But as the morning wears on,

Elaine can't make sense of it.

Sweetie, please call me back.

And I just kind of thought,

"Oh, come on, sian. Give somebody a ring."

Narrator: by 10 a.m.,

Her boyfriend, kevin, is so worried,

He files a missing person's report.

Hi. It's -- it's my girlfriend.

She didn't come home last night.

This -- this is her, here.

Memory: there are a number of reasons why people may go missing.

So before we launch an investigation,

We want to establish some of those facts.

Has she ever done anything like this before?

No, never.

He basically told us

That it was completely out of character.

Narrator: police are concerned enough to launch an investigation,

Starting with a visit to the family home.

Fulcher: mrs. Pickford.

By the time elaine gets back from the hotel,

A detective is already there.

And that is something I remember very vividly

Because of just this awful feeling of

They are reacting incredibly quickly.

Have you found her?

Not yet.

We are doing everything we can, though.

Can we come inside and ask you a few questions?

Yes.

Yes, of course.

When people go missing, the first thing you want to do

Is establish the circumstances.

You know, perhaps she wasn't happy with kevin,

Perhaps she was seeing someone else.

Is it like sian to just take off like this?

Oh, no, no.

She'd get in touch.

She knows we'd worried.

They're difficult questions to ask.

But you want to check them just in case

There's a natural explanation as to why she's gone missing.

We've been trying to call her mobile, but...

Around midday, it stopped ringing.

It just goes straight to voicemail.

Is it possible she could be seeing someone else?

Oh, she loves kevin.

Sh-she'd never go off with someone else.

You're thrown into this

Where you've got the police side of it,

And they're asking you questions.

And your mind's also like,

"Is this really happening?"

Narrator: but detectives need to find out for themselves.

Memory: we went to see kevin at his home address.

And we're asking, "why do you think sian's gone missing?"

Kevin reape?

Yeah?

Detective fulcher.

So kevin...

Where do you think she might have gone?

[ Scoffs ]

I haven't got a clue.

Memory: we also want to know what she's wearing.

Who was she out with?

When did he last speak to her?

I think the last text I sent to her was at midnight.

All those sort of questions, we start building a picture.

Narrator: kevin says that sian went to the old town area of swindon

For a girl's night out.

Where were you last night, kevin?

I -- well, i-i was out

With some friends at the races during the day,

And then we went out for drinks after.

Narrator: he says he got home at midnight

And found their apartment empty.

Hey, sian, hey. Uh, just got back,

Hope you're having fun. [ Chuckles ]

Just, uh, give me a call when you can, all right?

Reape: and that's when I -- I g-gave her a call

When I got back, and she didn't reply.

So then I sent her the text.

Narrator: kevin seems genuine,

But the detective knows better than to take him at his word.

Whenever we see any witnesses to missing people,

We'll do what I would call a visual check.

Narrator: he looks over the young man for any signs of a recent fight.

There aren't any.

You have anything else?

Still, that doesn't mean a night of drinking

Didn't lead to domestic violence.

So investigators track down

One of the friends sian went out with last night.

Memory: we wanted to know where they'd been,

When they last saw sian.

Had they any contact?

Did they know anything about sian that we didn't?

I want you to walk us through the evening, love.

Um.

Well, we went for dinner in old town

Then, uh, pub crawled

Before ending up at suju around midnight.

Narrator: suju is a popular night club in the center of swindon.

It's got an upstairs bar

And a lounge area

And a downstairs-basement disco-dancing area.

Narrator: around 2:30 a.m.,

Sian's friends got separated from her.

Well, she said she had to go to the bathroom, but...

And that's the last you saw?

Yeah.

We waited for her, but she didn't come back.

They'd all been drinking, so they'd had a good evening,

All were a bit merry.

They left the night club, I believe,

Thinking that sian had already gone.

Narrator: detectives ask for a description

Of what sian was wearing.

Uh, gray dress and black boots.

And with a recent photo in hand,

They head straight for the night club.

They're encouraged by what they find at suju.

The club is well-covered by surveillance cameras,

Both outside and in.

These six cameras should have caught sian leaving the club.

I'm gonna need the footage from all of these.

Yeah. Alright.

Memory: when we conduct an investigation,

There's only three real ways that we solve them now.

That's forensics, that's mobile phones,

And probably one of the key ones is cctv.

The camera doesn't lie.

So if you're caught on camera, you're there.

Through here.

Narrator: the manager pulls the videos from last night,

And detectives start watching from midnight on.

They fast forward through more than 2 hours of footage,

Searching for any glimpse of sian.

What they find is about to open the door

To an even bigger mystery.

Is that her?

Narrator: the search for sian o'callaghan

Has detectives scouring through surveillance footage

From the last place she was seen, suju night club.

Hours go by without even a glimpse of her.

Then at 2:52 a.m...

...they spot a woman with short dark hair

Walking down the stairs alone.

Detectives switch to the camera

At the bottom of the stairs.

They rewind the video and pause.

Stevenson: so we had a recent photograph of sian,

We had the description of what she was wearing,

And we had an approximate time of when, I think,

Kevin had said she was due home.

Narrator: they can make out knee-high boots

And a light-colored dress,

Exactly how sian was dressed.

That's definitely her.

By the time the woman reaches the bottom step,

Detectives are 100% sure they've just found sian.

She turns the corner and walks through a door

Where another camera picks her up.

She walks past someone.

I don't think she knows them, no second look back or anything.

Narrator: the next camera picks her up seconds later

At 2:52:32...

...passing a door man

As she steps out onto the street.

Doesn't look like anyone's following her.

Can I see the footage from the exterior camera?

Yeah, sure.

Sian has left the club safely.

This next camera covering the exterior door

May show which way sian went,

Left towards her home or in the opposite direction.

The footage isn't as good outside.

It's not quite as clear.

Narrator: but sian's bolero jacket is distinctive.

That's her.

She turns left out of the club,

Heading in the general direction of her and her boyfriend,

Kevin's, apartment, just half a mile away.

Should have only taken her 15 to 20 minutes to get home.

Police need to find out who or what got in her way.

Listen up, guys.

We need to find this young girl.

It's completely out of character.

Memory: we had a genuine fear for the safety of sian.

So it was absolutely incumbent upon us

To do everything we could to try and find her.

Let's pull all camera footage from the old town,

Public and private.

Martin, jones, you take george street.

Stevenson, you come with me.

Narrator: their first priority is to find a witness

Who might have seen what happened

After sian left the club.

Although we knew where she turned left,

We didn't know whether she'd double back on herself.

Narrator: luckily, suju night club is on a busy street.

There are banks, shops, and restaurants,

All covered by cameras.

There's also a pub, the goddard arms,

Which sian should have passed on her way home.

But it's late saturday night.

And with so many of these businesses

Closed for the weekend,

Police have no hope of getting their hands

On the bulk of the footage till monday.

The next day,

With sian now missing more than 24 hours,

Police head back into swindon

With several hundred posters.

Memory: and we asked people to distribute them.

So they went out to taxi drivers.

They went out to local shops.

Everybody was keen to help.

If you drove around swindon at the time sian went missing,

Nearly every car had a poster of her in the back of it.

Pickford: word was kind of spreading.

So friends of sian's

Were putting things out

About sian being missing.

Narrator: the story also hits the airwaves.

Reporter: sian hasn't been seen or heard of

Since leaving this night club alone

In the old town area of swindon at around



Pickford: whenever her photo came up,

I did find myself sort of automatically

Looking away from the television

Because it was very surreal.

Reporter: 60 officers from wiltshire police

Are involved in the search,

As are many family and friends.

It was difficult to associate the two and think,

"That's sian up there.

This is all going on for sian."

Where is she? They'll find her.

They will find her.

But with every hour that passes,

Concern for sian o'callaghan's safety grows.

Narrator: the day goes by without any sign of the missing woman.

Her family can only hope that somewhere out there,

Their beloved sian is still alive

And that police will pick up her trail

In the new cctv footage.

Narrator: twenty-two-year-old sian o'callaghan disappeared

From a night club in swindon, england,

Shortly before 3:00 a.m.

On saturday morning, march 19.

More than 24 hours later,

The trail is still stone cold.

Sian's mother, elaine,

Struggles to keep any hope alive.

Pickford: by the late on the saturday night,

Certainly by the sunday morning,

I'd already felt that wherever sian was,

She wasn't there of her own free will.

And I thought, "if sian comes back to us,

She's not going to be the same sian

Because she's going to have gone through

Some trauma of some sort."

Narrator: investigators have identified key cameras

Along sian's walk home through the old town

That could shed light on what happened to her.

With hundreds of hours of footage still being processed,

Police quickly follow another line of investigation.

Yes, I'd like to request some phone records.

This will tell us who they phoned,

Who's phoned them,

And also give us some opportunities

To look for locations

Because if it's receiving a signal, we can identify

A quite specific location as to where it might be.

Narrator: police know from talking to sian's family

That her phone stopped ringing around noon,



That could be for a number of reasons --

It could have been switched off,

It could have been smashed,

Or simply the battery could have gone flat.

Narrator: more than 2 days after sian disappeared,

Her family and boyfriend, kevin,

Appear in a press conference.

This is what you see happens to other people.

This is what you see on tv.

This is now us.

We are now those people doing this.

Narrator: behind the scenes, police study boyfriend kevin's demeanor,

Looking for any sign that he's hiding something.

I just want to say how very worried we are about sian.

At one point, he just faltered a bit.

And I do remember the cameras

Just going a bit nuts then.

You could hear them all clicking and the flashes all going.

It's not like her not to come home

Or contact -- or contact any of us for such a long time.

We all want to know where sian is,

And we want her home safe and well.

Narrator: this young man's heartbreak is completely genuine.

While police back at headquarters

Await any tips from the public,

Sian's cellphone records arrive.

Her phone hasn't been active since 12:01 p.m.,

About 9 hours after she left the club.

And it was pinging from an ominous location,

Savernake forest.

Fourteen miles south of swindon,

This desolate spot is not a likely destination

For a 22-year-old after a night out.

Why would anyone have driven her out there

Other than to do harm?

Narrator: investigators now believe

There's a strong possibility sian has been abducted.

Search-and-rescue teams

Have a daunting task ahead of them.

Savernake forest spans 4,500 acres.

This is the place sian's mobile phone

Last received a signal

In the early hours of saturday morning,

Half an hour driving distance from the swindon night club.

Narrator: hundreds of volunteers join in the search for sian.

If it was your family member or friend,

I think you'd want to get out there.

Memory: she was a bubbly, lively girl,

Missing in strange circumstances.

And it just caught the public's imagination.

And everybody was trying to find sian.

It felt like the whole of swindon was doing something.

Narrator: back at the station,

Investigators are facing their own daunting search.

The cctv footage is finally ready,

Thousands of hours

From 300 separate cameras around town.

Stevenson: we were working very long hours

Because we knew how urgent it was,

And, you know, we wanted to get as much information

As quickly as possible.

Narrator: officers pore through the footage,

Starting at 2:52 a.m.,

Just after sian left the club...

Which camera's this?

Barclays bank on the high street

Just down the road from suju.

...and keep their eyes peeled for a lone female

Who never made it home.

She's got to be on here somewhere.

Stevenson: that's the only thing we had to go on.

We had no other sightings.

She literally disappeared.

♪♪

Narrator: finally, they find their needle in the haystack.

Is that her?

It's footage from the goddard arms pub at 2:56:23,

Just 400 feet down the high street from suju.

It's a female walking in the direction of sian's home

Just 4 minutes after she left suju night club.

Pause that.

P.c. Stevenson replays the video

And pauses as the woman walks into frame,

Her back to the camera.

She makes out the same short, cropped hair,

Knee-high boots, and light-colored skirt

That sian was seen wearing

On suju's surveillance video.

Stevenson: and we can tell it's sian

Because the footage is quite clear,

And it's a very similar silhouette image

To exactly that came out of suju.

Narrator: stevenson hits play again

And watches as sian continues heading home.

At 2:56:42,

The glare of car headlights

Hide sian from the camera's view.

Where's she gone?

Two vehicles pass by the camera heading into town.

Can you zoom in on that?

The officer pauses the video

And makes out sian in the distance,

Just in range of the camera.

It is a relief when you see them again,

When you pick them up again

Because you're continuing your timeline.

Narrator: at exactly 2:57,

Another set of headlights approaches.

But there's something different about this car.

What's he waiting for?

♪♪

The seconds tick by.

And the car doesn't move.

These lights are blinking.

And p.c. Stevenson realizes

The driver's put his hazards on.

Officers continue watching,

Hoping the driver will pull away

So they can find sian again.

♪♪

When the car finally passes,

Sian has vanished.

Stevenson: the footage right at the bottom

Where the car has stopped is quite grainy.

So it is a bit difficult to tell

Whether she's definitely just carried on

And walked on down the road or whether potentially

She'd been collected.

Narrator: they watch again as the car pulls away,

Leaving behind an empty sidewalk.

Sian has disappeared.

Memory: can we confirm 100%

That that's the last sighting of sian?

Have we missed her in any way?

Narrator: the detectives check the other cameras further down the road

To see if any of them picked up sian.

Nothing.

There's now no doubt about it.

The missing woman must have gotten into that car.

And now investigators need to find it.

Narrator: while a massive search continues

For sian o'callaghan at savernake forest,

Investigators studying cctv footage from swindon town center

Have picked up sian's trail.

Now, they need to figure out whose car she climbed into.

Memory: could it have been a taxi?

Was it a friend that pulled up alongside?

Was it a complete stranger?

Was she dragged from the street and thrown in the car?

Narrator: p.c. Stevenson watches the video again,

Pausing as the vehicle approaches the camera.

We were obviously hoping that we could identify it.

Narrator: but the glare obscures the license plate.

All they know is it's a dark-colored station wagon.

We must have watched that footage 100 times.

Everybody looked at it.

Had anybody missed anything?

Look at that.

Narrator: there's a lighter area on the passenger door.

Memory: there was wild speculation as to what that might be.

Was it a dent? Was it a sticker?

Narrator: whatever it is, it's an identifying feature.

We'll see if any of the other cameras picked him up.

Officers go back in time

And troll through hours of footage

From downtown swindon earlier that night,

Hoping to find a clearer image of the car

Before the encounter.

At 1:51 a.m.,

Almost an hour before sian was last seen,

Their hard work pays off.

That's our guy again.

Stevenson: even if the image that you were looking at wasn't very clear,

You knew it was the same car

That you'd seen on the camera previously.

Narrator: a dark station wagon with the same light area

On the passenger-side door,

One street away from where sian disappeared.

Officers are able to locate

The same vehicle on a number of occasions,

Circling the old town area

Between 1:51 a.m. And 2:53 a.m.

Stevenson: none of the glimpses that we were getting of the car

Didn't give us anything --

Color, model,

You definitely couldn't see any number plates

Or even any partial number plate.

So incredibly frustrating.

Narrator: until p.c. Stevenson finds a 1-second clip

That will provide the missing piece of this puzzle.

A camera in a bank

In the same area as the suspect's car

Shows a sliver of road

As a police patrol vehicle goes by.

That police car was fitted with something which we call

Automatic number plate recognition system, anpr.

Narrator: this system records the license plate

Of every car it passes

Then runs it against a national database.

And if it's wanted or is suspicious,

It would flag up to the officer with an alarm.

If there's no reports on it at all,

It's just retained on the hard drive

As being recorded.

Narrator: officers track down the patrol vehicle that was out that night.

Memory: and they're looking at images of cars

That have passed the police car

In and around the right relevant time.

And they're trying to, as best they can, match them up.

Narrator: at 2:59:25, they spot something.

Is that the car?

The system has recorded the license plate

Of a dark toyota station wagon

Heading south out of town.

I couldn't believe our luck.

It was the most amazing moment.

We actually realized

That the two cars did cross each other.

I think we've got him.

So we freeze framed over the front of the car,

And that gave us

An image of the letters and the numbers.

Narrator: investigators run the plates and quickly get a hit.

The vehicle is registered to 52-year-old taxi driver

Christopher halliwell.

They check the name against their criminal records.

Apart from a couple of minor convictions,

He comes back clean.

He appears to be a standard middle-aged man

Working as a taxi driver in swindon.

Narrator: the mark police spotted on his car

Was the taxi company logo.

And this may also explain

Why he was driving around town late at night.

But whatever happened after sian climbed in,

Police are convinced

It was no innocent cab ride.

Memory: there's been mass public interest,

Mass media attention,

And yet he's not come forward to say he picked her up.

That, to me, raises the suspicion

Against him significantly.

Narrator: there is a very real possibility

That sian is still being held c*ptive.

Investigators will have to plan their next move very carefully.

Memory: if you think sian's still alive,

The best option is to follow him for a few days

And see whether it leads you to more evidence

And the safe recovery of sian.

Narrator: it's tempting to just arrest halliwell immediately.

But investigators know if they arrest him now,

They may lose sian forever.

The case is heating up.

But the family is still in agony.

Pickford: from being told someone was under surveillance,

It was then very much more tense at home.

I remember us being told

It was moving at an incredibly fast pace

And that we could get news at any moment.

Narrator: the next day, the surveillance team delivers

Some footage to detectives

From a gas station mini mart halliwell visited

While they were tailing him.

That's his car.

Narrator: they watch the familiar station wagon pull in.

The time stamp reads 11:51 p.m. On tuesday, march 22nd,



Nothing out of order here.

A minute later, detectives pick up halliwell

Entering the gas station.

He looks like any other customer.

He's casual. His hands were in his pockets.

Narrator: halliwell walks up to the cashier

To buy some candy.

Memory: it's only when he gets to the counter

To pay for his petrol and his sweets

That his demeanor changes.

Narrator: halliwell suddenly seems uneasy,

Unable to maintain eye contact.

He glances around and fidgets.

When the cashier hands him his change,

He's in such a hurry he almost forgets his receipt.

He cannot wait to leave those premises.

Narrator: something has spooked their suspect.

Police have no idea what.

See that on the counter.

Until they look again

As halliwell hands over the red packet of candies

To the female cashier.

In front of halliwell is a sheet of paper

With what looks like a photo on it.

Police know what this is.

So does halliwell.

He seems to stare at it

As he pulls his cash from his back pocket.

And at that point, clearly, he's shocked by seeing that.

Narrator: when he hands the cash over,

He picks up the package

And deliberately places it over the image.

As the cashier sorts his change,

Halliwell picks up the candies again,

Revealing the image, which draws his gaze back.

What's so stunning about this piece of paper?

He's looking at a missing poster.

And it seems to have shaken halliwell to the core,

As if he's seen a ghost.

Memory: he doesn't want his eyes

To be drawn to the pretty girl

That he has abducted.

Christopher halliwell deliberately placed his sweets

Over that poster

So that he didn't have to look at sian's face.

Narrator: the detective clicks on the next video

And observes halliwell's taxi

Pull out of the gas station

At 23:54:28.

Could halliwell be heading

To wherever he's holding sian?

Narrator: police are now convinced

Sian o'callaghan was abducted by a predatory cab driver.

But they're playing a dangerous game of cat and mouse

Trying to figure out where she is

Without letting the suspect know.

And it was decided that we would follow him for a couple of days

To see what his activity would be.

Narrator: day 6 of sian's disappearance,

The surveillance team follows halliwell into a supermarket.

Memory: surveillance officers can easily follow him

To see what he's doing.

Is he looking to buy a newspaper?

Is he reading the story about sian?

Narrator: instead, he heads straight for the pharmacy.

And there, he bought a large quantity of painkillers,

Which we knew if he'd taken them all at once,

Could have been fatal.

Narrator: police fear he is planning on taking his own life.

And if sian is being held c*ptive

And unable to escape,

They might not find her until it's too late.

Police make their move.

Go. Go. Go.

[ Tires squeal ]

Memory: christopher halliwell didn't have time to resist arrest.

Before he knew it, he was handcuffed.

Where is sian?

Halliwell was interviewed urgently

To see whether he'd assist in identifying where sian was.

We been following you for 3 days now, christopher.

Tell us where she is.

Narrator: investigators confront halliwell with the evidence

Stacked against him.

Tell us where she is.

Finally, he breaks.

I'll take you to her.

[ Police radio chatter ]

Halliwell guides police to a secluded location

Near uffington,



And 20 miles north of savernake forest

Where sian's phone was last working.

At the bottom of a grassy bank,

Police finally find what they're looking for.

Memory: sian was not visible from the road.

She had been placed on an embankment and rolled down.

And she'd gone down probably 100 feet.

So she'd been there some 5 days.

Narrator: stab wounds are visible

At the back of her skull and neck.

Stevenson: it was devastating because...

You just all the way through,

You know, you were just wanting her to be alive and well

And for it to be a happy outcome

That we could take her back to her family.

Narrator: back in swindon, sian's family desperately waits for news.

They found sian's body.

[ Gasps ] no! I'm so sorry.

Pickford: and she just basically said,

"We have found sian, and she is dead."

And it was literally, that was the exact words,

"We found sian, and she is dead."

[ Sobs ]

Even though I'd kind of, like,

Thought that the worst could happen,

You still...

It's incredibly surreal to hear those words.

Everybody broke down.

And I remembered just saying to them,

"It's all right. You can cry now,"

Because up till that point,

Everyone had sort of been trying to be strong.

But it was like you'd been given permission, somehow,

To let all that emotion out.

Narrator: police would never had found sian

If halliwell hadn't taken them.

And he has one more grim surprise in store.

Do you want me to take you to another one?

What do you mean, "another one?"

I think probably the last thought in anybody's mind

Was he was going to say he k*lled a second person.

Narrator: after an exhaustive search,

Police uncover the body

Of 20-year-old becky godden-edwards...

...reported missing by her family in 2003.

I think the officers were completely numb.

There was a man that 2 days earlier

Was a mild-mannered taxi driver.

He was now revealing that some 8 years earlier,

He m*rder*d a second person.

Narrator: in the early hours of march 19th,

Police believe halliwell

Was trolling the streets of swindon

Looking for a fare...

Or a victim,

When he saw sian walking home alone.

Memory: he pulled up alongside,

And there was probably a short conversation about,

Did she want a lift home?

Narrator: though she lived within walking distance,

Somehow halliwell persuaded her it was a good idea to get in.

Within a short space of time, I suspect she fell asleep.

[ Door opens, closes ]

...doing? What are you doing?

Hey, get off!

Get off me!

[ Screams ]

Narrator: she fought back, but halliwell had a knife.

He stabbed her twice,
