today dennis haskins reads a story about

mary

who was quite contrary all day long

contrary mary did contrary things she

rode her bicycle

backwards she went for a walk

on her hands then it's a perfectly

wonderful story about a perfect

present accepted the orange with a smile

it is a perfect orange my daughter

we thank you greatly finally

why does cat need to borrow all her

friends things

hello sheep said cat may i have some of

your soft

wool of course you may

she bleeded what are you going to do

with it

do you know where that little block

thingy is that i got for my birthday

i have no idea well you know the little

whatchamacallit gizmo

i don't know what you're talking about

did you check your toy box

it's not there did you look on the shelf

over your bed

it's not there either you know it's that

little puzzle thingamajig that uncle

george gave me

oh did you look under your covers

yes under your pillows yes

under your bed yes

i mean no oh

oh hi keto well hi mr haskins oh that's

very nice

please just call me dennis oh okay

thanks dennis sure

hey what's in the bag your lunch oh no

it's trade day at school see everybody

picks a name

and then you have to trade something

with whoever you picked

so i picked john stain and he picked my

name

so now we have to trade each other

something oh

i get it you give john something of

yours and he gives you

something of his yup yup i think i found

something for john

but it was hard to think of something

he'd like cause

john is really you know different

different yeah he likes different stuff

than i do

he's like my opposite what he thinks is

really neat

i think is kind of boring and what i

think is really neat

he thinks is boring i mean his favorite

food is

broccoli and he has a pet

and his hobby is making up math problems

oh

but it sounds like you're feeling a

little contrary

about trying to think of something

contrary to what you like

so john will like it uh right

i think here maybe this story will help

oh yeah story hey sure anytime great

this is called contrary mary and it's

written by

when mary got up this morning she was

feeling

contrary she put her cap

on backward and her shoes

on the wrong feet are you awake her mom

called

no said contrary mary

for breakfast there was hot toast and

peanut butter

what would you like mary asked mom

roast potatoes and gravy please said

contrary mary

when they went to the store it was

raining

come under the umbrella mary said mom

but contrary mary didn't

she just danced around getting wet

all day long contrary mary did contrary

things

she rode her bicycle back

she went for a walk on her hands

she read a book upside down

she flew her kite along the ground

while mary's mom just shook her head

mary mary quite contrary she said

and then she had an idea

that evening at bedtime

instead of tucking mary in right side up

mary's mom tucked her in upside down

then she opened the curtains

turned on the light kissed

mary's toes and said

good morning

mary laughed and laughed contrary mom

she said do you love me contrary mary

asked mary's mom

giving her a cuddle no

said contrary mary and she gave her mom

a great

big kiss

end oh boy

mary was really contrary that day

she did everything opposite but

it was really kind of neat too you know

not the same old thing

uh-huh well that's like you and your

friend john you two are opposite in a

lot of ways huh

yeah i just i just hope john knows that

we have contrary tastes

so he knows to trade something i like

and not what he likes huh gee this can

get confusing i know

well this is leslie

and this is judson hi i'm leslie hi mr

hi john has just given me

two wonderful books to keep here at the

story place

he says he's read them a gazillion times

oh cool

hey what's in the box john oh you'll see

it's for you don't look you mean for

trade day

uh-huh but no peeking yet well what is

it

lucy do you have any tape uh it's on the

shelf next to my easel

how about some rubber pants same place

you know i have an idea everybody why

don't we have dennis

read one of the books that john brought

for us

i'd be happy to

okay well what are they about well let's

find out

this book is called the perfect orange a

tale from ethiopia

that's a country in africa it was

written by

frank pete you know someone in africa

yeah well no

there's someone from ethiopia oh okay

well this is where this is from and it

was written by frank

once in the mountains of ethiopia lived

an

orphan girl named sahai

because she was sincere and generous

her neighbors loved her dearly

one morning sahai went out into the

orchard by her hunt

she saw a big bright

orange a perfect orange she cried

i must take it to our ruler the great

nikus

sahi plucked the orange put on her

whitest shama

and started for the city

[Music]

on her way sahai passed by the great

house of otto jib

the lord hyena where

are you going little girl called out

otto jib

to the city with a perfect orange she

replied

give me the orange and i will give you a

gourd to carry water

said otto jib leering no said sahai

i am taking this orange to the great

knee goose

auto jib laughed so hard he rolled on

the ground

what a silly gift he said you must take

the knee goose something precious like a

gold cross or

rare jewel

sahai ignored his laughter and went on

her way

in the city found

the royal palace

i'd like to see the great niku she said

to the agafari

the royal chamberlain with the agafari

scowled from behind his handsome

mustache

his majesty is very busy very busy he

snapped

i only need a moment to give his majesty

this orange replied say hi with her

biggest smile

well the agafari's face softened

very well he said and he showed sahai

into the throne room

welcome said how may we

serve you zahai gave a currency and said

when i saw this perfect orange i thought

it would be

just the right gift for your majesty

the knee goose accepted the orange with

a smile

it is a perfect orange my daughter

we thank you greatly now

what do you wish in return

nothing your majesty it's a high set

with a little smile

but you have pleased us my daughter said

the needles

take this purse of gold no thank you

your majesty

white's a high well then have this

casket of jewels he said i need nothing

said sahai she bowed and left the room

when sahai left the niku's called his

agafari

the little girl refused our gifts

he said go and choose one of our

finest donkeys put this purse of gold

and this casket of jewels in the saddle

bags

then follow and give her the donkey

the akafari ran with the donkey until he

was out of breath

and finally he caught up with sahi

little girl he said his majesty wants

you to have

this donkey for me she said clapping her

hands

please thank his majesty

[Music]

the akafari lifted sahai onto the

donkey's back

and waved goodbye

once the high passed the house of auto

jib the hyena's mouth popped open

where did you get to that donkey he

asked

his majesty gave it to me sahai said and

she continued on her way

otto chip's eyes narrowed

a donkey with full saddle bags for an

orange he muttered what would negros

give me

for my cattle and lands

[Music]

dashing off the hyena wrote out a deed

for his lands and his cattle

then he put on his fanciest shama and

set out for the city

otto jib arrived at the palace i

am an important fellow he said to the

akafari

i have cattle and lands to give the

great

negros the agafari frowned

and stroked his great mustache but then

he smiled nodded his head and let

auto-jib

in auto-chip's black nose

brushed the toe of his sandal as he

bowed before the negus

your majesty he said waving the deed

i am pleased to give you all my lands

and cattle these are

great gifts auto jib said the nicos

what may we do in return

the hyena drooled and bowed again

this time banging his head on the carpet

whatever your majesty deems worthy for

my humble offerings he replied

the nicu smiled we

will bestow on you our most

prized possession here good fellow

we give you this perfect

orange

when sahai reached her village her

neighbors

ran out to admire her donkey one of them

looked in the saddlebags look

she cried his majesty gave you gold and

jewels

what a surprise cried so high

friends please help me celebrate this

good fortune

they prepared a feast of anjirah wat

and sydney

[Music]

after dinner sahai played a song on her

car

and they all ate oranges for dessert

the end

oh boy otto jib lost everything

didn't he because he was greedy wasn't

he

right what does it mean to be greedy

it means you want everything but even

though you don't need it

that's pretty good yeah that's right

good

judson's right and what happened when

sahai got something when she didn't want

anything

she um she had a feast yeah

that was very good she had a feast yeah

a big dinner

do you think that made sahai feel good

to be able to share those things with

her friends yeah

yeah for sure how do you think it's a

high felt to be able to give

the knee goose that orange

i think she felt happy

yes yeah oh maybe um

she was happy that she gave it to him

because she wanted to be nice yeah

that's right good to give people things

so high was just

nice wasn't it the high was just nice

yeah and what

what about uh otto jib the one that

wanted something back

he only gave all his stuff to the nicos

cause he wanted to get more stuff in

return

yeah and what do you think he thought he

was gonna get he's like he was gonna get

gold

yeah so now why do you think he gave his

things to the knee goose

because he wanted gold or a donkey

that's right

yeah you guys really got this story

lucy do you have a stapler i'll get it

hold on uh look over there on the

bookcase john

thanks okay what are you doing john why

do you need the stapler

down on the farm cat

woke early it was a special day

and she had work to do

horse was grazing in the field

[Music]

when cat jumped onto the fence

[Music]

hello horse said cat may i

borrow your stable horse didn't use his

stable in the summer

because he liked to sleep outside

yes he made what will you use it for

this and that bird the cat

[Music]

pig was rolling in his sky

when cat leapt onto the wall

hello pig said cat may i have some of

your straw

the farmer had just made pig's bed

the straw was clean and fresh and there

was plenty of it

help yourself grunted pig

what's it for this and that

purred the cat

goat was playing in the yard when cat

hopped on the gate

and meowed

hello goat said cat may i have some hay

goat never ate hay in the summer when

the grass was green and lush

if you want he cried whatever do you

need it for

this and that purred the cat

very good

sheep was dozing under a leafy tree

when cat climbed onto a branch

hello sheep said cat may i have some of

your soft

wool sheep had a thick white

coat and she had plenty to spare

of course you may she bleeded

what are you going to do with it this

and that bird the cat

hen was scratching for grain

when cat left on top of the hen house

hello hen said cat may i have

a few of your feathers hen stopped

scratching

and c*ck her head curiously

you may she clocked

but whatever for

this and that

cow was drinking from the stream

[Music]

when cat joined her on the bank

hello cow said cat

may i have a few hairs from your tail

cow had a long tail with a hairy tip for

swatting flies

yes she mood what are you going to

do with them yes

and that hurt the cat

[Music]

donkey was looking for thistles

when cat jumped on his back

hello donkey said cat

may i borrow that lovely purple ribbon

from your hat

donkey wore a hat to keep the sun out of

his eyes

it was decorated with a bright purple

ribbon around the brim

if you're careful with it he said what

do you want it for

this and that hurt the cat

the animals thought cat was behaving

strangely but what does she want with

all our things

collect him perhaps she's

moving house mood cow

no grunted pig cats don't like moving

let's follow her brave donkey the

animals

all hid in the yard and when cat

appeared they tiptoed after

her cat went

inside the stable and the animals

followed silently behind

[Music]

in one corner they saw

two little kittens

[Music]

they were inside a nest made from

hay and straw it was lined with sheep's

wool

hair from cow's tail and feathers from

hen it was decorated with donkey's

pretty purple ribbon

what a lovely surprise

made horse they're beautiful

said goat so that's what you needed our

things for

exclaimed sheep leaning over the huge

nest

donkey asked what are they called

cat side

i don't know i can't decide

what do you think the

animals looked at each other

then together they made

and grunted bleeded and clucked he hot

and mood we know

oh boy kittens named this and that

that was a funny one john really has

good taste in books why do you think all

the animals

gave their things to cat i know

maybe some of them thought that she was

having kittens

i thought that the animals were thinking

that

he used all of their stuff to make

um a bed for her maybe some maybe

maybe maybe so or they would just be

nice to let her use them

ah and what is that that's being

generous generous exactly just because

they wanted to be nice

they were being nice like sahai exactly

right kino all right

yes oh before i forget let's do our

story picks

first is sam and the lucky money it's

chinese new year and sam receives a gift

of lucky money

what will he spend his gift on in the

end he makes a very generous choice

and in lucy's picture a young girl

understanding her grandfather's special

need makes a

very special gift for him that he can

see with his hands

okay kino it's ready wanna see what i

brought to trade you

oh yup yup you bet i do come on all

right

let's go come on let's go

wow cool it's a race track i made

i know how much you like cars so i got a

bunch of stuff around my house and put

it all together

oh i just love it thanks you're welcome

oh and here's what i got to trade to you

open it up

whoa cool it's one of those great puzzle

thingies

yeah see i know how much you like

arithmetic problems

so i figured you'd like puzzles too you

have to get all the colors the same on

each side

just by twisting it see i love puzzles
