with some cool stories for today's story

time

first melissa joan hart reads the story

of donna o'neisha

who can't figure out why everyone is

chasing her

she stopped and she threw up her hands

and she turned and stood facing those

folks who were chasing

and said to them what do you want

then martin mull tells us of a contest

between two good friends

ready set go

and up they flew above the spruce trees

gander flew higher

i am the champion of champions

and visit a farm in the early morning

good morning to you

what happened to kevin keno i thought he

was coming with you to hear the story

oh well he couldn't come he had to go to

another story reading with his sister

i told him to come over here because

this is such a cool place

but he couldn't oh that's too bad you

guys are pretty good friends right

oh yeah yeah he's one of my best friends

do you have any best friends christina

yeah

you do i have robin and um

lauren yeah

uh-huh what are the names of your

friends tyler i'm running for than

kimberly

oh yeah kimberly she's a good friend of

yours yeah she is a girl

she's a girl yeah she's a girl yeah it's

fun to have lots of friends

yeah but sometimes it's fun to be by

yourself but this story is about a girl

who couldn't get to be by herself no

matter how hard she tried

do you want to hear it yeah yeah i do

yeah let's hear the story okay

it's called donna o'nishak was chased by

some cows by bill grossman

and the pictures are by sue truesda okay

here we go donna onishik was chased by

some

cows and also by mooses and gooses

and sows it happened one day

when donna at play pattied a cow on the

head

the cow got her friends and they started

to chase poor donna onishik all over the

place they chased her through

farms through pastures and barns around

and around

and around

she ran down the street past a uniform

cop

he blew on his whistle and made them all

stop

thank you she said and she patted his

head and the cops started chasing her

too

they chased her up roads full of buses

and trucks

they chased her down rivers all covered

with ducks

they chased around bridges and ledges

and bridges

around and around and around

the voice of a cat in the treetop above

her said quickly young lady come here

and take cover

climb up here with me so she climbed up

his tree and thanked him and patted his

head

but the cat chased her too so she

quickly climbed down

the others joined in when she got to the

ground

she barely was racing ahead of their

chasing when a boy peddled by on his

bike

he slammed on his brakes and he jumped

off his bike

here said the boy take my bike if you

like

thank you she said patting his head but

he hopped on his bike and he chased her

[Music]

they chased her past chickens and

turkeys and birds

they're bunches of buffalo running in

herds past foxes and bears eating apples

and pears

around and around and around

she yelled to a horse with a pack on his

back

oh please let me ride on your back in

your pack

sure the horse said so she patted his

head

and the horse started chasing her too

they chased her up sidewalks they chased

her down streets

they chased her through gardens of

carrots and beets

through windows and doors of houses and

stores

till she stumbled right into a doctor

the cows and the mooses crashed into the

doctor

who bumped into donna onishak and

knocked her

right through a wall and the rest of

them all went charging along close

behind her

they chased her up mountains they chased

her down valleys

they chased her up highways they chased

her down alleys

they chased her for hours through bushes

and flowers

around and around and around

[Music]

she ran and she ran just as far as one

can

then she slowed and she stopped and she

threw up her hands

and she turned and stood facing those

folks who were chasing

and said to them what do you want

head pats they said we want pats on the

head

you give such incredible head pats they

said

they're so awfully good we thought that

it would be nice if you gave us some

more

she gave them five head pats they begged

her for ten

she gave them ten head pats they begged

her again

so she padded away for most of the day

then she stopped

and sat down and looked tired

she said to them all do you know what

i'd like

then the boy peddled over to her on his

bike and he patted her head

thank you she said then everyone patted

each other

now head pats from anyone always are

nice but head pads from donna own knee

shocks are twice

as good as the rest yep hers are the

best

and gosh donald nishak's pat's on the

head must have been super good for

everybody to chase after her like that

well the story says hers were the best

yeah and this was the best story

that kevin's gonna be upset that he

missed it because it's so

good well if he's gonna be upset then

maybe we shouldn't tell him

oh well i mean upset in a good way you

see kevin and i have a contest about

who listens to the best books and this

is the one

that'll make me the winner

listen you guys i have to go to the

story place now i know that

kevin's gonna be there well thanks for

the story uh it was just the best

hey yourself kino wow that's pretty cool

train kevin

thanks and you know what i

just heard the coolest story so that

would make

me the winner in our best story contest

uh-uh i just turned the coolest story

so i'm the winner well how do you know

your story was the coolest i just know

it was

trust me it was the coolest no

impossible

mine was the most cool story in the

whole history

of the world forever and ever period

i don't know about that oh yeah yeah

hi guys oh hi lucy

this is martin and this is amanda hi

martin amanda hi amanda hi martin

hi what are you guys arguing about over

there well

see we have a contest the one who

listens to the coolest book

is the winner but kenna won't admit that

i heard the coolest

book that's because you didn't i did

guys guys this coolest book contest

shouldn't be getting in the way of your

friendship

or in your ability to enjoy a good book

cause we're about to read some books

here

oh i have a book around here about two

friends having a contest

uh where did i leave it oh here it is

oh what's the book about about a duck

and a goose

having a contest and who won well we'll

see when we let martin read it for us

very well okay it's called don't

fidget a feather and it's by erika

silverman

and it was illustrated by s d schindler

ready

one day duck went swimming in the lake

what a great swimmer i am she thought

just then she heard a big splash

greetings duck said ander hi gander

watch me swim duck paddled as fast as

she could

not bad said gander but i'm faster

let's race said duck ready set

go off they swam

across the lake

duck came in first ta-dah

i am the champion maybe

said gander but i can fly higher than

you

cannot said duck gander flapped his

wings

ready set go

up they flew above the spruce trees

gander flew higher

[Music]

i am the champion of champions

no you aren't said duck yes i am

said gander thud thump

they landed side by side

duck fluffed out her feathers she

waddled back and forth

finally she turned to gander let's have

a freezing place contest she said

don't move don't talk

don't fidget a feather

and the winner will be the one and only

true and forever

champion of champions that's me

said gander we'll see

said duck ready set

freeze ander stood still

so did duck she watched gander

she waited for him to move

a bee flew out of the bushes

it zigged around gander's head it zagged

around his tail

it won't be long thought doc before i

will be the one

and only true and forever champion of

champions

but gander did not move

the bee zigzag toward ducks

it hovered over her head

he landed on her neck duck did not move

one muscle

she did not quack one quack she did not

fidget

one feather and the bee

flew away

duck waited and waited for gander to

move

a horde of bunnies bounded over and they

perched on gander's head

and they slid down his long neck

soon thought doc soon i will be the one

and only true and forever champion of

champions

but gander did not move

the bunnies surrounded duck

they tapped on her beak they played with

her webbed

feet they leapfrogged across her back

duck did not move one muscle she did not

quack one quack

she did not fidget one feather

and at last the bunnies just hopped away

duck waited and waited and waited

for gander to move

a cluster of crows swooped down

they circled around gander's head they

landed on kander's back they bounced up

and down

any second now thought duck i will be

the one and only true and forever

champion of champions but gander did

not move

the crows swarmed around that

they fluttered their wings in her face

they caught in her ears they tickled her

tail feathers

duck did not move one muscle she did not

quack

one quack she did not fidget one

feather car

the crows flew away

a sudden wind gusted up

clouds of dust rose into the air

branches swayed and leaves scattered

the wind blew gander into a grove of

dandelions

it knocked duck into a mulberry bush

after a long long time the wind settled

down to a

sighing breeze

half a second more thought

and uh along came

fox what luck

fox's nose quivered with the light

dinner tonight and

dinner tomorrow dinner just waiting to

be cooked out of the corner of her eye

duck could see gander gander did not

move

and neither will i thought

doc fox rolled

duck and gander into his sack

and fastened it tight

then he dragged and pushed and pulled it

through the woods

[Music]

fox took duck and gander out and set

them down next to each other

he started a big pot of water boiling he

chopped up potatoes

and tomatoes and carrots and celery and

squash

he threw in a handful of beans

he added garlic and pepper

he stirred the stew

then he turned and he looked at gander

gander did not move one muscle

he did not quack one quack he did not

fidget one feather neither did duck

i sparkling fox pointed

from one to the other

eenie meenie miney mander

cook a duck i cook a gander

my tummy says to pick this

one and that is

[Music]

y-o-u

fox carried gander over to the pot

gander has to move now thought duck

but gander did not fox opened the lid

clouds of hot steam billowed out

move gander please move thought duck

but gander did not

what if gandra can't move the duck what

what if he's too afraid

fox lifted gander high

in we go

don't cook my friend duck snapped at

fox's tail and she nipped at his nose

he'll help fox dropped gander and went

running off into the woods

duck and gander watched him go

duck's side well

gander i guess you win the freezin place

contest

maybe said ganter but you

duck are the one and only true and

forever

champion of champions i am

duck stared at gander and she smiled and

puffed out her feathers well

yes i suppose i am

peeked into the pot hmm smells good

shall we eat and they ate

the whole pot of fox's delicious

vegetable stew

well what do you think do you like that

story what do you think about that

um i liked when the fox ran away

um and when they were so close to each

other

yeah me too they're friends he's smiling

he's smiling

how could you tell when a duck is

smiling

because the beaks are out yeah they're

like

isn't their beak always out yes

but it's more out when they smile do you

think this was hard to play this

this freezing game yeah yes yes

have you ever played that yeah it's hard

to hold you because

um because sometimes you like have to

move

i know you just have to breathe because

well let me ask you you could freeze if

i tell you just freeze right now do it

okay

ready okay now could you do that if

there were bunnies crawling all over you

no could you do that if you had

crows on you yeah

you could here you would have to raise

your eyes

open if i didn't if i had them closed i

would

i could be able to do it if i was like

this

it's not freezing that's sleeping

there's a difference isn't there no no

how about you kino what did you think of

that story

oh i don't know

ask kevin kevin

um well i i think

what uh what kevin is trying to say is

uh um and i were both

ah oh yeah yeah we shouldn't have argued

about who won

right the duck and the goose found out

that it didn't matter who's the champion

of champions

yeah that's right being friends is more

important than being champion

yep maybe this was the coolest book and

you both won let's do something together

oh how about this one

oh let's see hmm nothing

the horse woke up with a grin and a

sneeze

pranced about raced about racing the

breeze

santa horse i slept like a philly

the cow woke up with a kink in her back

in digestion a headache and utter

attack

said the cow i'm in a terrible mood

out in the meadow the breeze strolled by

and the scarecrow listened can you

guess what he said

nothing at all

[Music]

the sheep walk shyly also neatly

slipped off their pajamas so discreetly

set the sheep please no picking

the piggies stretched and threw mud on

their faces

then spread it around in all the best

places

what what save the piggies always bathe

before eating

out in the meadow the breeze strolled by

and the scarecrow listened can't you

guess what he said

nothing at all

ten little chicks scratched and dug

then politely shared a banana slug

said mama see how delicious good mamas

can be

[Music]

the dog dog tired

hurt the chicken's cheap sighed

rolled over and went back to sleep

said the dog too early

out in the meadow the breeze strolled by

and the scarecrow listened

can you guess what he said

nothing at all

in the middle the cat was stalking

watching waiting softly talking

[Music]

meow said the cat i see my

breakfast

the mouse grew nervous when she saw the

cat

then ran off quickly no time for a chat

cried the mouse where will i hide

out in the middle the breeze strolled by

and the scarecrow listened

can you guess what he said

there's a mouse in my pants he

pursed his lips and jiggled his hips

and performed three backward double back

flips

wow

[Music]

he beat out a beat like a rock and roll

rocker and wrapped out a wrap

like a rap-happy squawker

[Music]

a heel kicking hoofer a boot-stopping

stopper a tap

dancing dancer a berserking berserker

[Music]

he whirled and he twirled around and

around

till the mouse flew out with a little

mouse sound

the scarecrow collapsed

twisted and scattered he lost his great

head

and the stuffing that mattered

scarecrow you scared us we thought you

were dead

but the scarecrow wasn't can you

guess what he said

[Music]

what's for breakfast

[Applause]

good two of you are great readers

yeah together you make a great team oh

well

thanks oh see would you like to be on

our team too amanda

sure good then you can help by holding

up the books when we do our story picks

okay this is another book about a

contest

the most wonderful egg in the world see

the king has to choose

which hand lays the most beautiful egg

and this is my story pick easy to see

why it's about this girl who takes her

puppy to the dog show

she thinks her pooch will win the

contest it's pretty funny
