what's the story amigos this is kino

with some cool stories for today's story

time

today will anyone come to miss fighter's

tea party

we would be fools to take our tea with

anyone so

spidery

next mara wilson reads about elvira

a dragon different from all the rest

dear if you would only behave like a

normal dragon

her mother said you want me to be like

them

this was too much

and then joey lawrence reads the story

of wilson

a boy who sat alone

major funding for story time is made

possible by a grant from helen and peter

bean

so that families everywhere can share

the joy of reading with their children

additional funding is provided by the

corporation for public broadcasting

and by the annual financial support from

viewers like you

[Music]

hi kino hi lucy

oh did you join that children's theater

group that i told your mother

about yeah i joined

did they give you a part in a play well

for the play they're doing now

all the regular parts have been given

out but i'm gonna recite a poem at the

end

oh that's wonderful kino that children's

theater group is terrific

they perform plays and a play is just a

story acted out on a stage

and since you love story so much i'm

sure you'll have a great time

well i don't know about that

what do you mean is something wrong

actually

i'm thinking of quitting quitting why

well i don't know any of the kids there

and they don't know me i just sat there

like a lump

nobody said anything to me they they

were practicing their lines and

they just sort of ignored me that's just

because

it was your very first day there you'll

make friends

before you know it it just takes a

little time well

i hope it happens fast well you can help

it happen

by saying friendly things to the other

kids and

by joining in with them i've never been

the new kid before

believe me it's no fun you won't stay

the new kid for long i promise

you'll make new friends just like you

did when you started school for the

first time do you remember that

yeah well i remember but then everybody

was new so

we all sat there like lumps tell you

what

how would you like to hear the story

about

a spider who wants to make new friends

i think you'll like it i always want to

hear a story

okay see what you think of this one it's

called miss spider's tea party

and it was written by david kirk and he

drew the pictures too

one lonely spider sipped her tea while

gazing at the sky

she watched the insects on the leaves

and many flying by

[Music]

if i had friends like these she sighed

who'd stay a while with me i'd sit them

down

on silken chairs and serve them cakes

and tea

two timid beetles ike and may

crept from the woodwork that same day

but when miss spider begged please stay

shrieked oh no and dashed away

three fireflies flew inside that night

their spirits high their tails alight

they spied the web and squeaked in fear

we'd better get away from here

the little trio did not feel they'd care

to be a spider's meal

[Music]

four bumblebees buzzed by outside

please come to tea miss spider cried

the four ignored her swaying there

she waved a tea towel in the air

she took a cup and tapped the glass

then one bee spoke to her at last

we would be fools to take our tea with

anyone so

spidery

within the shadows of the room just

peeking from behind a broom

five grinning faces bobbed and peered

miss spider smiled her heart was cheered

descending for a closer look she danced

into the gloomy nook

but sadly found those jolly mugs

belonged alas

to rubber bugs

some ants strode in they numbered six

but ants with spiders will not mix

she brewed them tea from hips of roses

[Music]

the proud platoon turned up

their noses

a fine bouquet concealed its prize of

seven

dainty butterflies

miss spider watching from the wall was

not aware of them at all

the tea table was set for eight with

saucers

cups and silver plate the cakes were

fresh

the service gleamed yet no one would

arrive it seemed

her company in no demand left her a cup

for every hand

[Music]

nine spotted moths kept safe and warm in

shelter from a thunderstorm they stood

beneath an open sash

and watched the jagged lightning flash

miss spider dropped down on a thread a

silver tray

above her head she'd hoped to please

them

but instead they flew away

in mortal dread

[Music]

they've left me all alone she cried

she dabbed her eyes and sadly sighed

it's plain no bug will ever stay

her tears splashed down upon the tray

[Music]

ten tiny steaming cups of tea

were perched atop her trembling knee

she sipped and sobbed

then heard a cough and turned to see

a small wet moth

a fragile thing so soaked by

rain his wings too damp to fly again

she smiled and took a checkered cloth to

cloak the frail and thankful moth

they talked and snacked on tea and pie

and till his tiny wings were dry

then lifting him with tender care

she tossed him gently in the air

[Music]

the moth told ike then ike told may

who went from bug to bug to say there's

no reason for alarm

she's never meant us any harm

so later on that afternoon assembled in

the dining room

11 insects came to tea

to share miss spiders

[Music]

courtesy

twelve tender violets in a vase

presented at miss spider's place

set by her chair so neatly spun

she munched the blossoms one by one

her friends were glad to watch her feast

upon

the floral centerpiece

it was a great relief to see she ate

just

flowers and drank just tea

[Music]

miss spider's reputation grew

before too long our hostess knew each

bug who crawled or hopped or flew

and all their lovely children

too

the end so what did you think of that

story kino

oh i liked it miss spider didn't want to

eat anybody

it just took all the other bugs a little

time to understand that

yeah it took everybody a little time to

become friends didn't it

yeah but but it's not quite the same as

the children's theater group

i'm not afraid anybody's gonna eat me

there and the other kids aren't afraid

of me

are you maybe a little afraid of them

well no i'm not afraid of them i

i'm just sort of nervous cause i don't

know

any of them did you feel that way when

you

started to go to school for the first

time oh sure

i think everybody did we didn't know

each other

um hmm

hmm but we're all friends now

it just took us a few days to get to

know each other

sure it did you know

i think the theater group will probably

take a little more time too

i think you're right yeah i think i am

too

i guess i won't quit at least not yet

i'm glad kino oh see

lucy remember that story mara not our

mara but

mara wilson read about elvira the dragon

elvira made friends with people she was

supposed to like to eat

sort of like miss spider oh i remember

that one oh

that story was great and mara mara

wilson

was a great reader yeah

hi dj hi anya i brought one of my

favorite stories today

i like it because it's full of dragons

and

dresses that's a funny combination isn't

it

do dragons wear dresses no

you want to hear it yeah okay here we go

elvira pictures and words by margaret

shannon

hundreds of years ago there was a group

of the

meanest nastiest dragons that ever lived

they like nothing better than fighting

other dragons

and gobbling up princesses

when elvira was born she seemed just

like any other baby dragon

but soon her mother and father

noticed that she wasn't quite like the

others

[Music]

she didn't like eating princesses

and she didn't like fighting

what elvira liked was sitting on the

grass making

daisy chains

the other little dragons teased her and

burned her daisy chains

[Music]

this made elvira angry

but it didn't change her

she began making dresses and spent hours

admiring herself

others teased her even more

[Music]

this made elvira furious

[Music]

well dear if you would only behave like

a normal dragon

her mother said you want me to be like

them

this was too much

so she packed her dresses in a suitcase

and went to live wear dresses and daisy

chains

were appreciated

at first the princesses were not happy

to see her

but once they were sure she was not

going to eat them

she became their favorite pet they

dressed her in pretty clothes

polished her scales and curls her

eyelashes

[Music]

they even painted her claws elvira was

thrilled

[Music]

one day when elvira was sitting in the

forest

she saw her mother and father coming

towards her

hello hello she cried they stopped and

stared

[Music]

this is the biggest fattest

princess i have ever seen said her

father

and he grabbed her with his big claw

ready to swallow her hole

dad it's me elvis screamed and she

proved it

[Music]

ovirus parents were glad to see her it's

time for you to come

home elvira her mother said you don't

want to be mistaken for a princess again

the other little dragons heard that

albedo was back

and went to welcome and they saw her

they gasped our fire's clothes were

beautiful

the princesses had taught her too

[Music]

soon all the dragons wanted dresses like

elvira's

she made dozens of them everyone was

happy

[Music]

except of course

the princesses

[Music]

do you suppose a virus around here

somewhere should we look for her and her

dragon buddies

[Music]

oh man that story's hilarious elvira was

so different from the other dragons her

dad almost ate her for dinner oh that's

right

she was determined to be herself wasn't

she yeah

but even though it's not good to be a

dragon's dinner

it's good to be yourself oh it sure is

and

that's the best way to make friends

don't you think

yep yep just be yourself hey lucy

oh hi joey hi andy we'll be right over

okay lucy i don't know

joey or handy well i'll

introduce you and then you'll all know

each other

and then if i give it some time maybe

we'll all turn into friends

exactly and don't forget to be

yourself come on let's go

okay hi hello

how are you oh good good joey andy i'd

like you to meet kino

kino this is joey and andy hey kino how

are you

okay nice to meet you nice to meet you

too joey

did you bring us a story yes i did lucy

it's uh called wilson sat alone and it's

all about a little boy

who for some reason always sat by

himself so

we're gonna read this book and figure

out why okay all right you guys ready

yes ready ready okay it's called wilson

sat alone

and it's by deborah hess and it's

illustrated by

diane greenseed okay

on mondays the children in miss

carraway's class

pushed their desks together and sat in

groups of six and seven

sat alone

[Music]

at lunchtime when groups of friends ate

together in the cafeteria

wilson ate alone

at recess everyone gathered for a

kickball game or played cowboys and

indians or

dinosaurs and monsters

wilson played along

[Music]

and at the end of the day when all the

children rode the bus

climbed into cars or wandered home in

packs of three or four

wilson walked alone

[Music]

on reading days while everyone clustered

into groups

wilson right alone

on snow days as ben and sam and lucy and

meg

helped each other into their snow suits

wilson

dressed alone

when the children built snowmen and

threw snow and

laughed and screamed

[Music]

wilson didn't laugh because he

was alone

[Music]

now one day a new girl came to school

she said her name was sarah she smiled

all the time

she sat alone and ate alone and read

alone

and played alone but only for one day

on her second day at school sarah pushed

her desk into a group of other desks

and ate with the other children

and played monsters in the snow and

laughed

and wilson watched her from where he sat

alone he watched

all that day and all the next day too

and sarah saw him watching

and raced across the snow

and roared a monster roar at wilson

you sat alone

don't do that said lucy not to wilson

called sam

why not ask sarah he always sits alone

said sam

he always plays alone said meg he likes

to be alone said ben and then

an amazing thing happened

wilson roared back oh

softly at first and then louder

and louder and louder

it was the biggest loudest

grandest monster roar

of all time

and from that day on wilson played with

the other children

and ate with them and sat with them

and read with them and walked with them

and wilson was not alone

anymore

[Music]

yeah oh that's great isn't that good

yeah do you guys like it oh yeah a lot

yeah i really like this book a lot so

what was the difference between sarah

and wilson in this story

well she's only shy for one day and

wilson was shy for

ever for several days yes why was she

shy only one day what did she do to

probably just you know got everybody

know everybody and then

that's right what helps make new friends

if you ah what are you doing right now

that's right you're smiling yes

yeah you know what else you're doing

you're also talking

and talking is very important that's

right you always tell me you always

thought

and that's why andrew has tons of

friends that's absolutely right huh

that's it do you do you talk to well yes

sometimes but sometimes i feel kind of

shy you do

yeah why i don't know i just kind of

they just kind of clam up you do

that's no good how did sarah

help wilson make friends

right yeah it was a silly little thing

huh that's right

yeah she went over and like talked to

him she was silly with him she was the

first person that ever approached

wilson everyone else thought because he

was so shy because he

stayed away that you know he didn't he

didn't want to be a part of their games

or or

dressing or going home or or eating or

reading or

anything else but sarah she said i'm

going to go over and give this guy

a chance and she did and he roared back

and now he'll never sit alone or eat

alone or read alone ever again

right yep yep you know what i was a

little

nervous before when i didn't know you

guys but

now that we've had a story and

everything i'm not nervous anymore

and you know what i'm not gonna be a

lump at the

children's theater group anymore either

i'm gonna try to be

a little more like sarah in the story oh

excellent

excellent tino that's excellent yeah oh

you know

this reminds me of the poem that i'm

gonna recite at the end of the play

would you like to hear it absolutely yes

of course

oh okay um well see our teacher gave me

a book called

i like you if you like me poems of

friendship

and and i picked this poem i really like

it it's called

by myra

cohn livingston i think i can remember

it all oh good

okay okay here i go okay

we could be friends like friends

are supposed to be you

picking up the telephone calling me to

come over and

play or take a walk finding a place to

sit

and talk or just goof around

like friends do me

picking up the telephone calling you

oh wow thank you

[Applause]

[Music]

that was great you know you know that

was a perfect poem it was crowd goals

yes that was a great poem for today keno

excellent perfect perfect choice oh well

thanks you're welcome

thank you i really like poetry you know

there's a perfect poem for

every day i think there's poems about

baseball and bugs and being happy

that's right and uh monsters and cows

and bad ideas and things like that

yeah and and old bubble gum and little

sisters and

even toothpaste that's right well keno

i think your poem pick was the perfect

pick for today

and i think it's the perfect time for

today's story picks okay oh

wow lucy say that again five times real

fast

i think your pawn pick was perfect

and our first one is a weekend with

wendell and it's the story of sophie
