hi omar will you please help me with my

backpack

this book weighs a ton wow this is a

very big book oh yeah thanks

my grandpa gave it to me he says it's

really special because it has the

stories that he used to listen to when

he was a little boy

from c to shining c a treasury of

american folklore and folk songs

oh it has poems in it too and

illustrations wow yeah and it has songs

too

and i learned one already really which

one it's on page 160 116.

let's see oh here we go there it is it's

called

the erie canal i remember this one we

used to sing it in kindergarten

oh well let's sing it mara okay here we

go

okay i've got a mew her name is

15 miles on the erie canal she's a good

old worker

and a good old girl 15 miles on the

erica now

we've hauled some barges in our day

filled with lumber coal and hay and we

know

every inch of the way from our bunny

to buffalo low bridge

everybody down low bridge before we're

coming to a town and you'll always know

your neighbor

you'll always know your pal if you've

ever navigated on the iricana

we better get on our way old pal

15 miles on the eerie cutout cause you

get up there mule here comes a lock

we'll make robots six o'clock

one more trip and back we'll go

low bridge four we're coming to a town

and you'll always know your neighbor

ever navigated on the eerie condo

oh keno look some of our friends are

already here hmm

wouldn't you rather have fred read us a

story oh yes let's go oh hello

ah gee i really like singing it makes me

feel good inside

i like it as much as i like story books

oh i've got a mule her name is sal

do you guys want to start it yeah yeah

yeah okay

here we go this is the mitten i jam

adapted and illustrated by january okay

once there was a boy named mickey who

wanted his new mittens made from wool as

white as snow

at first his grandmother baba did not

want to knit white mittens

if you drop one in the snow she warned

you'll never find it

but nikki wanted snow white mittens and

finally baba made them

after she finished she said when you

come home

first i will look to see if you are safe

and sound but then

i will look to see if you still have

your snow white mittens

so off went nikki and it wasn't long

until one of his new mittens dropped in

the snow

and was left behind so bob was right huh

he did

was gonna lose his mittens

a mole tired from tunneling along

discovered the mitten and burrowed

inside

it was cozy and warm and just the right

size

so he decided to stay a snowshoe rabbit

came hopping by

he stopped for a moment to admire his

winter coat

it was then that he saw the mitten and

he wiggled in

feet first the mole didn't think there

was room for both of them

but when he saw the rabbit's big kickers

he moved over

next a hedgehog came snuffing along

having spent the day looking under wet

leaves for things to eat

he decided to move into the mitten and

warm himself the mole

and the rabbit were bumped and jostled

but not being ones to argue with someone

covered with prickles

they made room as soon as the hedgehog

disappeared into the mitten

a big owl attracted by the commotion

swooped down

and when he decided to move in also the

maul the rabbit and the hedgehog

grumbled

but when they saw the owl's glinty

talons they quickly let him in

do you guys know what his talons are

nails yes

big sharp claws up through the snow

appeared a badger

he eyed the mitten and began to climb in

the mole the rabbit the hedgehog

and the owl were not pleased there was

no room left but when they saw his

diggers

they gave him the thumb it started

snowing

but the animals were snug in the mitten

a waft of warm steam rose in the air and

a fox trotting by

stopped to investigate just the sight of

the cozy mitten made him feel drowsy

the fox poked in his muzzle and when the

mole the rabbit the hedgehog the owl

and the badger all saw his shiny teeth

they gave him lots of room

a giant bear lumbered by

he spied the mitten all plumped up and

not being one to be left out in the cold

he began to nose his way in

the animals were packed in as tightly as

could be

but what animal would argue with the

bear would you

no no i wouldn't the mittens swelled and

stretched it was pulled and bulged to

many times its size

but baba's good knitting held fast see

it had the stretch to fit all the

animals

but she was a good knitter

along came a meadow mouse no bigger than

an acorn

this is really small because how big's

an acorn only about

yeah about that big so it's really small

mouse

she wiggled into the one space left and

made herself comfortable

on top of the great bear's nose

the bear tickled by the mouse's whisker

gave an enormous sneeze huh

a chew the force of the sneeze

shot them in up into the sky and

scattered the animals

in all directions

on his way home nikki saw a white shape

in the distance

it was a lost mitten silhouetted against

a blue sky

as he ran to catch his snow white mitten

he saw baba's face in the window

first she looked to see if he was safe

and sound and then she saw that he still

had his new mittens

but look at this one mitten is perfect

just the size of his hand

put this mint and look how big it is why

is it so big

cause all those ads all the animals well

i bet you never thought so many animals

could have fit inside one mitten

not really yeah do you think it could

really happen

no no you don't think so unless it was a

giant smitten

unless it was a giant smitten exactly if

it were really big then they could all

fit in there

i mean just squeezed in

they just squeezed in yeah right but

that's because this is a fantasy

a bear is too big to fit inside of a

mitten also nikki was lucky this time

that the bear sneezed and it got his

mitten back but is he gonna be able to

hold onto that mitten for very long do

you think

no cause why because it's white and

it'll match into the snow

so do you think do you think every time

he loses it the animals will come to

help him

probably not just this time he was lucky

so now what he has to be more careful

and hang onto his mittens oh mara mara

look here comes your friend leah

i've written two books remember when

keno was reciting a rhyme before

remember that well both of the books

that i've written that i brought to read

you today are both written in rhyme

and i write in rhyme because i like

rhythms and beats

rhythms and beats rhythms and beats and

when you rhyme

you've got time to do some rhythms and

beats

rhythms and beats so who will help me

rhyme a little bit before i read my

rhyme

who likes to rhyme i do i do do yeah

okay let's see can you can you think of

yes we'll rise with that bat very good

yeah nat very good i have a friend named

and also a little tiny little bug isn't

that very good so this is a book called

cool for me now before i recite this

book to you and read it to you

there's three things you have to know

you have to help me with this book

very good because i'm gonna need a lot

so there's three things first there's a

line that repeats itself over and over

i personally never leave the house in or

out of doors without

these sunglasses wow so before i beat

earl's too cool for me i happen to have

sunglasses for all of you so if you

would humor me and put these on there's

a pair for you

i have a special pair for you

oh thanks sure who doesn't have a pair

does everyone have a pair hannah doesn't

have a pair

she doesn't have a bag who doesn't have

a pair i do too no you could ever put on

your sunglasses

wow now we're ready to roll because

there he is in his bathtub not a little

earl swings with gorillas and when he's

tired of that

everybody let's try that line again earl

girl swings with gorillas

very good and when he's tired of that

he plays jazz with the alley cat

what's the line earl's too cool for me

very cool earl's friendly with the

martians

wow and a few movie stars

he keeps monster eyes and empty jelly

jars

pretty cool huh earl's too cool

for me now here comes earl

and he's gonna ask why i'm not cool

like he is but what he says is

hi and we smile at each other

you know something he's a regular

guy what a surprise and here i thought

he was so much

cooler than me yes earl's pretty funny

and he's

really nice but he's eight years old and

only thrown up

twice isn't that cool

we're cool as cool can be and what's the

line

too cool for me very cool let's give

ourselves a cool round of applause

so what do you think you think it's cool

to be cool wow wow yeah

okay i have one more story oh

great great okay this is also written in

rhyme i also wrote this book

and this is about a girl named annie

the nanny i wrote this book about a

friend of mine who moved away

have any of you ever had a friend move

away from you yeah how many of you have

ever had a friend move away

i moved away from my life you moved away

from one of your friends do you remember

what it felt like when you had to move

away

sad sad yeah it's sad to leave a friend

isn't it

who else can tell me what's it like when

you move away from your friend or your

friend moves away from you

yeah fred i moved away from my friends i

used to live in chicago

so now i moved out here but the most fun

part

about moving away from your friends is

when they get to come and visit

that's the most fun part because then

you go around with just them for all

like all day for a week or however long

they stay that's the most fun part

and you get to show them where you live

and shut off all your new stuff and you

get to visit them too

wow which is fun well i wrote this book

about my friend annie bonanni when i

wrote this book she had just moved to

italy

and i was so mad at her that she moved

to italy that i wrote this book by the

time i finished writing the book

and by the time the book was published

by the time book came out

so much time had passed that she had

already moved back from italy

so i have a suggestion for you if you

have a friend that's moved away and you

want them to try and come back

you should try writing a story about

them it worked for me

i don't know if it's gonna work for you

but it's a try this is called annie

banani

this is also in rhyme and i'm gonna ask

you to help me with this one too are you

up for doing a little bit more rhyme

yeah yeah good

annie the nanny my best friend

said we'd be friends to the end

made me brush my teeth with mud

there she is sign my name

in c*ck blood

tie my brother to the trees made me

tickle

bumblebees because all the things my

good friend annie banani had me do right

promised we would always play now annie

banani's going a

way very good after all that she's going

away

annie banani wouldn't be annie banani if

it weren't for

me very good she was anne from outer

space i scrubbed the freckles off her

face made her grow a half inch

taller shrunker ears

made both feet smaller very good you are

very good rhymers

brought her out for all to see princess

annie banan that was a hard one you did

very well on that too

annie banani do you think it's good

leaving your whole neighborhood

who will feed your porcupine who will

swing from your clothes

line how can you just go away now here's

one i know you're all gonna get

what about my sixth birthday

what could be worse than having your

friends not there at your birthday right

annie banani do not cry

even best friends say good bye

make some new friends try to write

and when you are in bed at night

remember

find a friend who's half as clever

sweet and kind

no you'll never ever ever never

never and since i wrote the book i'm

going to add a few more never evers i'm

going to ask you to help me

okay it starts out slither mccreep and

his brother joe were snakes

they were of the species strangulus

gorgianus

that is the squeezing kind slytherin joe

lived with their mother

who was a gorgeous squeezer too they

were happy except when slither and joe

fought

one day slither said mom joe put a sign

on his door it says no slithers allowed

even though it was spelled wrong it made

him furious

ignore it said mother slither did not

ignore it he thought about it

all the time later on he said

joe won't share his beach ball i need it

said joe

what four asked slither to sit on said

joe

see what i mean mom ignore it said

mother slither

did not ignore it he thought about it

all the time

soon he complained to mother again joe

won't let me use his rat

robots i need them said joe

what for ask slither to do my homework

who does homework with rat robots

roaring all over his desk wild slither

i do said joe later still slithers

shouted

joe won't let me wear his purple sweater

i'm wearing it

slither gave him a glassy stare on your

head he said

i'm playing sultan the sultan of

stingies said slither

if you feel so crabby said mother go

squeeze something you'll feel much

better

so joe went to watch tv and he took some

things he didn't want slither to use

he wrapped himself around them tight he

watched his favorite gruff

group balboa and the window vipers

they wore purple capes and rose-colored

sunglasses they hissed for heaven snakes

in cold blood and scales part two joe

loved it

wow he said they're really neat wow

meanwhile

mother had given slither an idea you bet

i'll squeeze something he said to

himself sneaking into joe's room

he squeezed joe's beach ball pop

he squeezed joe's eggshell collection

crack

then he squeezed joe's rat robots he

squeezed them into a big wide crunch

mother was right he felt better for good

measure he swallowed joe's fun shape set

gulp slither looked in the mirror up

and he adored being so many shapes at

once when the balboa show was over

joe went to his room it was full of

strange blobs

slither was coiled on the floor smiling

hey cry joe where's my beach ball

i squeezed it says slither where's my

eggshell collection

squeezed my rat robot squeezed

and my fun shape set joe almost screamed

i swallowed it don't i look great

hey mom joe yelled slither squeezed up

all my stuff

and he ate my shape set don't have a

hissy fit over it slither said

when mother saw the damage she said go

to your room or i'll turn you into a

shape that is not much fun

slither went to his room he banged the

door wango

inside it was very quiet very quiet

slither thought about his rampage i

should feel good about wrecking joe's

stuff

he thought but i feel bad and joe feels

worse

what should i do now suddenly he had an

idea it made him happy again

it made him so happy he hissed a little

song

outside joe and mother heard it his sis

then they heard a loud ker pop he

squeezed something else howl joe

there's nothing else to squeeze mother

reminded him

still they hurried in to see what had

happened

slither was coiled on the floor smiling

something was broken all around him

something was smashed to smithereens

now what have you wrecked you wrecker

joe screeched

my piggy bank slither said i'm sorry i

broke everything

i'm gonna buy you new stuff so joe was

speechless

his tongue just went in and out out and

in

again and again mother was not

speechless

what a nice idea she said and she gave

slither a little squeeze

at last joe said i'm sorry too i

wouldn't share anything

slither said well what do you want to

buy and joe's eyes glittered with a

siphon he listed the things he wanted

rose-colored sunglasses he said and a

purple cape and a new beach ball

hey great said slither can i use it i

will need it said joe

what for to sit on slither look to joe

are you joking slither asked

yes said joe and then

they both had a hissy fit of giggles

of giggles whoa big big lesson in that

story mara
