[Music]
what's the story amigos this is kino
with some cool stories for today's story
time
in our first story sheila ray the brave
needs to be rescued
sheila ray sat down on a rock and cried
[Music]
she sniffed then
joined teresa saldana for the story of
rat and tiger
two friends with a big problem whenever
tiger saw a flower he liked he just
pointed and expected
me to get it for him
and then it's how many kinds of houses
are there
a book is a house for a story a rose is
a house for a smell
[Music]
major funding for story time is made
possible by
a grant from helen being so that
families everywhere can share the joy of
reading with their children
additional funding is provided by the
corporation for public broadcasting
and by the annual financial support from
viewers like you
[Music]
oh this
was that you behind gee that's a
big box hey
who turned out the light oh i guess i
did when i
bumped into you oh there oh are you okay
oh phew yeah yeah that's better yeah i'm
fine
wha what's this big box for and and why
are you wearing aluminum foil and
pie plates well it's armor lucy
i'm a knight in shining armor oh of
course i should have known yeah and this
isn't a box you see it
it's a castle i see it's also not a fort
anybody can see that obviously it's a
castle
who said it was a fort jenny and she's
wrong wrong wrong
jenny you that's your friend she was
gonna come with you today wasn't she
no she was now i'm mad at her now
if you'll excuse me i want to be alone
gee kino i was hoping that
i could get your expert opinion on this
book
see it's called sheila ray the brave
please close the window lucy jenny
wanted a window but i
don't who needs a dumbo window i'm not
going to use it
well i'm sorry you and jenny aren't
getting along
isn't it kind of dark in there well
yeah kinda did you see something about a
story
would you like to hear it sure it is
kind of weird in here alone
and a story is always good company but i
am not afraid
at all in here alone
in the dark oh okay
sheila ray the brave by kevin henkes
oh look kino sheila has a flag just like
yours
it's a little hard to see from inside
this overgrown
cereal box okay here we go
sheila ray wasn't afraid of anything she
wasn't afraid of the dark
[Music]
she wasn't afraid of thunder and
lightning
and she wasn't afraid of the big black
dog at the end of the block
oh you should see this picture
at dinner sheila rae made believe that
the cherries in her fruit c*ck
were the eyes of dead bears
and she ate five of them
at school sheila rae giggled when the
principal walked by
and when her classmate wendell stole her
jump rope during
recess sheila ray tied him up until the
bell rang
i am very brave sheila ray said
patting herself on the back
sheila rae stepped on every crack in the
sidewalk without fear
when her sister louise said there was a
monster in the closet
sheila ray attacked it and she
rode her bicycle no handed
with her eyes closed yay
yay sheila her friends yelled
clapping their hands
[Applause]
one day sheila rae decided to walk home
from school a new way
louise was afraid to you're too brave
for me
louise said you're always such a scaredy
cat
sheila rae called yeah scaredy
am not whispered louise
sheila ray started off skipping
i am brave she sang i am fearless
she stepped on every crack she walked
backwards with her eyes closed
she growled at stray dogs
[Music]
and bared her teeth at stray cats
and she pretended that the trees were
evil
creatures she climbed up them and broke
their fingers off
snap snap snap sheila ray
walked and walked she turned corners
she crossed streets
it suddenly occurred to sheila ray
that nothing looked
familiar
sheila rae heard frightening noises they
sounded worse than thunder she thought
horrible thoughts
they were worse than anything she had
ever imagined
i am brave sheila rae tried to convince
herself
i am fearless the sounds became more
frightening
the thoughts became more horrible
sheila ray sat down on a rock and cried
[Music]
she sniffed she thought of her mother
and her father and louise
mother father louise
she cried here i am
a voice said louise
sheila rae hugged her sister we're lost
sheila rae said no we're not said louise
i know the way home follow me
louise stepped on every crack
she walked backwards with her eyes
closed
she growled at stray dogs
and bared her teeth at stray cats
and she pretended that the trees were
evil creatures
she jumped up and broke their fingers
off snap snap snap
sheila ray walked quietly behind her
they walked and walked they crossed
streets they turned corners soon
their house could be seen between the
trees
sheila ray grabbed louise and dashed up
the street
when they reached their own yard and the
gate was closed behind them
sheila ray said louise
you are brave you
are fearless we both
are said louise and they walked
backwards into the house with
their eyes closed
and that's the end of that
well it looks like that window sort of
came in handy didn't it kino
well maybe it was easier to see the
pictures
what did you think of sheila ray the
brave well i liked it a lot
i'm brave and fearless too you know even
inside that
big dark castle with the window and the
door closed
hmm sure it was kind of dark in there
though
until you open the window well yeah
jenny's better at dark than i am but i'm
better at climbing trees
well i think some of us are
brave at different things yeah and
at different times like sheila ray and
louise
hi hi lucy oh hi
i'm so glad you could come today no
brother
i can't see oh it's teresa and her
daughter
tiana and it's fazzy and layla
you know maybe if you were to put a
window on this other side
oh wait where's keno oh i'm inside this
box
i mean castle wow a castle
you know what i have a story right here
that has a castle in it
oh you do well come on lucy
look it's called the rat and the tiger
and it's by
keiko kaza oh let's hear it
it has a castle in it yeah it sure does
cause this is a castle you know not a
fort
even though it has a window windows are
okay for forts but not for
castles kino had an argument with his
friend
jenny about whether or not this is a
fort or a castle
and whether it should have a window well
it wasn't just an argument
it was a big argument oh i'm sorry to
hear that
well listen to this story and i think
you might find a way
of getting along better with your friend
oh really
you mean it'll show jenny that this is a
castle and not a fort
and then it shouldn't have this window
well not quite but just listen to the
story and i think you'll see what i mean
okay the rat and the tiger
by keiko kaza
i'm a rat just a tiny little rat
tiger is a big tough fellow
we are best friends we used to have a
little problem though
whenever we played cowboys tiger was
always the good guy
and i was the bad guy
tiger said the good guy always wins in
the
end what could i say i'm just a tiny
little rat whenever
tiger and i shared a donut tiger always
cut it
so that his piece was bigger than mine
tiger said it's nice to share
isn't it what could i say i'm just
a tiny little rat
whenever tiger saw a flower he liked he
just
pointed and expected me to get it for
him
tiger said isn't nature beautiful
what could i say i'm just a tiny
little rat
one day i built a castle the biggest one
that i had
ever made look tiger i shouted proudly
tiger said nice job rat
and then he jumped up into the air and
he
kicked my castle to pieces
[Music]
that's it tiger i screamed you're not my
friend anymore
i may be a tiny little rat but you
are a big mean bully
good boy
i was mad and i was
sad but most of all
i was scared i had never yelled at
tiger like that before when tiger found
me
my heart almost stopped i thought that
he might kick me
just like he had kicked my castle go
away
tiger i shouted i'm not afraid of you
leave me alone but tiger
didn't come to kick me he had fixed my
castle
and he wanted me to see it so i did
but i told him i'm still
not your friend
then tiger asked me if i wanted to play
the good cowboy for a change
so i did
but i told him i'm still
not your friend next
tiger asked me if i wanted to cut our
donut for once
so i did
but i told him i'm still
not your friend
finally tiger asked me if i
wanted a flower so i
pointed to one and tiger bravely went to
pick it for me
maybe i told him just
maybe i'll be your friend again
and tiger smiled
ever since that day we have gotten along
just fine we take
turns at everything
[Music]
and we split our donuts right down the
middle
we do have a little problem though
a new kid on the block
oh no the rhino's bigger than both of
them
and the rat and the tiger are gonna have
to teach a rhinoceros how to share
and be fair yeah oh hey you know
i just thought of a great rhyme it's
fair
to share what do you think that's great
kino
well that's what sharing is all about
being fair to everybody
hmm that's right hey kids what do you
think of this story
now let's see who should go first who
wants to go first who wants to go first
okay what did you did you like the story
it was great it was great oh good what
did you think of the story
it was great oh good she liked it too
how about you
good and what what do you think it was
about
um sharing yes that's just what it was
about
do you have problems like that at home
sharing
fuzzy lena yeah do you do you share at
home
yeah yeah do you ever have these
problems where
sometimes when i find the candy my
sister
i give her um a big piece and she tells
me she wants the whole thing so i
don't know then i have to get a little
piece and she
takes the whole thing now you tell your
story
you tell your side of that story yeah
when he cuts a piece um i get the
a little when he gets the big one oh my
goodness
me and him get the same thing oh
you know i was just thinking
well maybe maybe jenny and i could take
turns
too oh that's great you see
you learn that because if a tiger could
do it you can do it too right
yeah yeah we can have a castle one day
and a fort the next day
and if you think and think there are
lots of things that you could do with
that box
and you and jenny could take turns
playing your favorites
well yeah yeah it could be a house too
yeah that's right but what kind of house
i bet there are as many different ways
of playing with that box as there are
kinds of houses
listen to this it's called a house is a
house for me
it's written by marianne hoberman with
pictures by betty fraser
a hill is a house for ann
and
a hole is a house for a mole or a
house and a house is a house for me
a web is a house for a
spider a bird built its nest in a
[Music]
tree there's nothing so snug as a
bug in a rug and a house is a house for
me
a coop that's a house for a chicken
chicken
a stye that's a house for a salad
a fold that's where sheep all gather to
sleep
a barn that's a house for a
cow cow right it's also of course
a house for
a kennel's a house for a dog
a dog is a house for a flea but when a
dog strays a fleas sometimes stays and
then it may
move in on me
a house for a mule is a shed
[Music]
a castle's a house for a duchess
a bed bug beds down in a
a bed that's right because it's so smart
mosquitoes like mud holes or puddles
[Music]
whales need an ocean or sea a fish
or may make do with a lake
but a house is a house me
a shell is a dwelling for shellfish for
oysters and lobsters and clams
each snail has a shell and each turtle
as well
but not any lions or lambs lions live
out in the open monkeys live up in a
tree hippos live down in a river
now what do you know about me
an igloo's a houseboard eskimo a
teepee's a house for a cree
a pueblo's a house for a hopi and a
wigwam may hold a mohi
a garage is a house for a car
a car or a truck a hangar's a house for
a plane
a dock or a slip is a house for
a ship a ship a ship yeah and a terminal
is housed for a two drink
a train a husk is a house for a cornier
a pot is a place for pee
a nut shell's a hut for a hickory nut
but what is a shelter
for me a glove is a house for
a hand
that's right you know a stocking's a
house for a knee a shoe or a boot is a
house for a
shoe and a house
is a house for me
a box is a house for a tea bag a tea pot
a house for some tea if you pour me a
cup and i
drink it all up then the tea house will
turn into me
cartons are houses for crackers castles
are houses for
kings the more that i think about houses
the more things are houses for things
and if you get started in thinking i
think you will find it is true
that the more that you think about
houses for things the more things are
houses to you
barrels are houses for pickles pickles
and bottles are houses for jam a pot
is a spot for potatoes
potatoes and a sandwiches home for some
ham the cookie jar is home to the
cookies the bread box is home to the
bread my coat is a house for my body
my hat is a house for my
head perhaps i have started far-fetching
perhaps i am stretching things some
a mirror's a house for reflections a
throat is a house for
hum but once you get started in thinking
you think
and you think and you think how pockets
are houses for pennies
and pens can be houses for ink
how peaches are houses for peach pits
and sometimes our houses for
worms how trash cans are houses for
garbage
and garbage makes houses for germs
and envelopes earmuffs and eggshells and
bathrobes and baskets and bins
and rag bags and rubbers and roasters
and tablecloths
toasters and tins and once you get
started in thinking this way it seems
that whatever you see
is either a house or it lives in a house
and a house is a house for me
a book is a house for a story a rose is
a house for a smell
my head is a house for a secret
a secret i never will tell
a flowers at home in a garden a donkey's
at home in a stall
each creature that's known has a house
of its own
and the earth is a house for
us oh oh
[Music]
that is that wow wow
pictures were so full of wonderful
things to discover
if you just look closely you know
something that
i noticed about that book lucy what
well i wasn't gonna say it but i may as
well
oh what kino what did you notice
well the castle and the story
sort of had windows i saw them in the
pictures
no you are right kino
see look kids you see the castle
actually did have windows hmm yeah
yeah i guess windows aren't all that bad
well if it weren't for that window you
wouldn't even have known that the castle
in the story
had windows yeah i guess you're right
you know come to think of it did you
notice this picture keno
take a look at this one you
were right about the big box making a
nice house too see
now what else could this be tiana a
rocket
a rock a rocket what do you think it
could be layla a dog
a dog or a dog house dog house that's
good and what do you think it could be
a plane a plane yeah it could be a queen
a bird oh it could be a bird or a bird
um
a cave a cave that's right what else
could what else could a box like a
treehouse
a tree house that's right oh i know
i know maybe if we put it down on its
side it could be a ship
or even a cave hey you know i'll bet
jenny will have more ideas
i'm gonna ask her oh great keno see ya
wait wait keno we need to do our story
pics
oh oh yeah right uh uh my story pick is
mr tall and mr small you see they sort
of had an argument like
jenny and me but they also learned to
cooperate and help each other out
and my story pick is a place for grace
and like he knows pic it's a book about
how we're all special
in some way that can help someone else
well thank you teresa and tiana and
laila
