i looked again at the halfway tree

ghost i shook his arms and

reached for me edward james almost reads

a story about a baby rattlesnake

who wants his rattle and before he's

ready

he shook his tail and when he couldn't

hear a rattle sound

he cried even louder

hi kino that was a great rhyme

i can do it anytime you can

just call me the rhyming man oh is that

your new name

that's my name and that's the game

i see oh you make

a rhyme out of the last word of

everything i say

right you are hip hip hooray

well ryman man how would you like me to

read you a wonderful rhyming book

you bet let's take a look all right it's

that story was okay with me lucy

well i'm glad kino did you notice how

some of the words were funny nonsense

words like canoe berry

and quackberry and jazberry

yes i did barry

i think nonsense words are fun you mean

words like

like bissell bun and double done and and

whistle rizzle run

exactly flapple actly

kino i have some very special friends

i'd like you to meet

oh will it be a treat a treat that can't

be beat

come on i hope you two are ready for a

scary story

and how about you are you ready for a

scary story

yeah yeah

hi kino i'd like you to meet

bill martin jr hello and adam and

kimberly and kevin and bill is gonna

read us a book that he wrote with his

friend john archambault

about a scary ghostly

tree oh hi everybody

that suits me to a tee

by the way kino's playing a rhyming game

today

he's rhyming everything that we say i've

been doing it

all day oh that sounds like fun keno

the book i'm going to read has lots of

rhymes in it too

whoop-dee-doo

shall we start are you ready yes yes

please

all right this is the story the

ghost-eyed tree

that was written by john oshambo and me

the pictures are by ted rand who is a

friend of ours

i'll read it to you

one dark and windy autumn night when the

sun had long gone down

mama asked my sister and me to take the

road to the end of the town

to get a bucket of milk oh

i'd ready to go oh i dreaded the tree

why does mama always choose me when the

night is so dark

and the mind runs free

come on fraidy cat my sister said don't

hang back

i'm not hanging back i said i'm getting

the hat you're a dumb hat my sister said

it's too big for you

you don't have to wear it i said no but

i have to look at it my sister said well

then look the other way

i said oh how dark

oh how dread walking the road to the end

of the town for the halfway tree

the ghost eye tree was feared by all the

great and the small

who walked the road to the end of the

town

what's the matter now my sister said

my hat i said you slipped off you're

afraid

that's what my sister said i am not i

said i'm getting my hat

as we near the tree our walks slowed

down

halfway down to the end of the town

hiding

what we feared the most pretending there

would be no ghosts

pretending not to be

afraid now there's nothing to fear my

sister said there's nothing here

just an old oak tree no there's nothing

here i said

nothing to fear it's just an old oak

tree

but we ran past the tree as fast as we

could

nothing happened nothing happened

we felt so good that we started to sing

there's no such thing as a ghost there's

no such thing as that ghost

it's only a dream my sister said it's

only a fooly inside of your head

there's no such thing as a ghost

i pulled my hat down over my right eye

so i'd look tough like mike barber

in the movies i'm tough

i said to myself real tough

what my sister said

oh i didn't say anything i said you did

too my sister said you were muttering

that was not i said and push up your hat

my sister said

it looks stupid oh

how glad were we how free to be walking

the road to the end of the town

for the halfway tree the ghost eye tree

my sister and i

had passed it by and the road led down

to the end of the town

where we got the bucket of milk

now that's a nice hit you got there said

mr calendar the milkman

i smiled my sister didn't

yes that would make a good milk bucket

said mr callander nobody's going to put

milk in my hat i said to myself

what said mr callander

well i didn't say anything i said you

did too my sister said you were

muttering

again mr callander that hat makes him

crazy

it's a crazy hat well come on i said you

talk too much

help me carry the milk first i carried

and then my sister carried walking home

to the end of the town

we couldn't walk fast the milk slowed us

down

walking home from the end of the town

oh how dark oh how dread

hurry up my sister said we're halfway

home

yeah we're about halfway home but

there's nothing here there's not

what was that i said

my sister said i didn't hear anything

well i did i said

something i really heard it

let's go back to mr callanders no

no my sister said there's nothing here

there's nothing to fear

i turned i looked at the halfway tree

just as the ghost eye

looked at me

[Music]

i looked again at the halfway tree

ghost i shook his arms and reach

for me

we ran we ran as fast as we could

my sister and i we ran all the way home

we shut the bucket down

and we flopped on the ground gasping

for breath oh my sister said

i'm so scared me too

i said did you see the ghost did you yes

my sister said but don't tell mama you

know what a coward she is

she'd never get over it but she'll know

i said we spilt most of the milk

don't worry my sister said i'll just add

some water to the bucket

she'll never know the difference

say my sister said

where's your hat

my head

my head i lost my hat

where my sister said

i don't know for sure

but probably down by the ghost-eye tree

oh no my sister said

yeah but it don't matter i said

i didn't like that hat very well anyway

oh no my sister said you love that hat

and i did too i was only making fun of

it oh

you're giving your hand and we'll go

get your hat no

no i said i don't want that hat

but up she jumped that sister of mine

took to the road that led through the

town to the halfway tree the ghost eye

tree

where my hat lay fallen on the haunted

ground

ellie ellie come back

i cried gosh i'll get you he's right by

your side

faster than foolies that flash through

your mind

ellie came back leaving ghost eye behind

here's your dumb hat sister said makes

you look stupid

it does not i said it's a beautiful hat

you said so yourself

i put it on my head i pulled the brim

down on my right eye

so i look tough

like my barber in the movies i'm tough i

said i'm real tough

i ain't a scatter no ghost

um come here

i'll tell you a secret

since that dread night at the halfway

tree

when old ghost i tried to frighten me

by some lucky chance

i'm never around when mama wants milk

from the end of the town

she can get it herself

[Laughter]

oh that was a great story

and i especially liked how ellie was

kind to her brother she went back and

got

his hat for him even though she'd said

that it was a stupid hat

we wanted to show that brothers and

sisters care for each other

even though they argue sometimes and

and i like the rhymes i'm glad you did

keno

did any of you kids ever go out at night

yes

and look at a tree and think you saw a

ghosty

face and your limbs stretched out like

long arms

grabbing for you you know

[Music]

well i did who said yes i did yeah

you saw a ghostly tree that looks like

looked like it had long arms

yeah did you get scared nah

oh you're tough you weren't scared no

no

and two eyes and two and the

arms trying to get me when i didn't get

scared

you didn't i just said and get away from

me

we got a bunch of brave kids here

kino when do you think this story

happened now or a long time ago

uh uh oh i know i know

when not now but then

why because because the milk came

in a bucket gee i'm a clever guy

that's right kino because a long time

ago people didn't get their milk and

cartons at the supermarket did they

no way back in those days most everyone

kept the cow on

they milked it themselves or they went

to a farm with a bucket and asked the

farmer to fill it up with milk

exactly well how would you like to hear

another story

oh yeah wonderful oh good because our

friend edward has one for us it's about

a little snake

then let's all listen for goodness sake

and here we go with a hidey hole

[Music]

that's how it happens when the sun's

right up on coming over to the side you

see how the shadow is here

the baby rattlesnake told by tayata

she did a wonderful job i like the way

she draws

out in the place where the rattlesnakes

lived there was a little baby

rattlesnake

who cried all the time because he did

not have a rattle

[Music]

you could see he's sweeping

he said to his mother and father

i don't know why i don't have a rattle

i'm made just like my brother and sister

how can i be a rattlesnake if i don't

have a rattle

mother and father rattlesnake said you

are too young to have a rattle

when you get to be as old as your

brother and sister

you will have a rattle too

[Music]

but baby rattlesnake did not want to

wait

so he just cried and cried

he shook his tail and when he couldn't

hear a rattle sound

he cried even louder

mother and father said

[Music]

brother and sister said

they were a lot better

but baby rattlesnake wouldn't stop

crying

he kept the rattlesnake people awake

all night

[Music]

the next morning the rattlesnake people

called a big council

they talked and they talked just like

people do

but they couldn't decide how to make

that little baby rattlesnake happy

he didn't want anything else but a

rattle

is that the guy that's talking mm-hmm

at last one of the elders said

go ahead give him a rattle

he's too young and he'll get into

trouble

but let him learn a lesson i just want

to get some

sleep so they gave baby rattlesnake a

rattle

maybe rattlesnake loved his rattle he

shook his tail

and for the first time he heard

[Music]

he was so excited

he sang a rattle song

he danced a rattle dance

he was a happy rattlesnake

soon baby rattlesnake learned to play

tricks with his rattle

he hid in the rocks and when the small

animals came by he darted out

rattling

[Music]

he made jack rabbit jump he made old man

turtle jumps

he made prairie dog jump

[Music]

each time baby rattlesnake laughed and

left he thought it was fun to scare the

animal people

mother and father warned baby

rattlesnake

you must not use your rattle in such a

way

big brother and big sister said you are

not being careful with your rattles

the rattlesnake people told baby

rattlesnake to stop

acting so foolish with his rattle baby

rattlesnake

did not listen

one day baby rattlesnake said to his

mother and father

how will i know a chief's daughter when

i see her

well she's usually very beautiful

and walks with her head held high said

father

and she's very neat in her dress added

mother

why do you want to know asked father

because i want to scare her said baby

rattlesnake

and he started right off down the path

before his mother and father

could warn him never to do

a thing like that someone's gonna be in

trouble

i can feel it the little fella reached

the place where the indians traveled

he curled himself up on a log and he

started rattling

[Music]

he was having a wonderful time

all of a sudden he saw a beautiful

maiden

coming toward him from a long way off

she walked with her head held high and

she was very

neat in her dress oh

thought baby rattlesnake she must be the

chief's daughter

baby rattlesnake hid in the rocks he was

excited

this was going to be his best trick

he waited and waited

the chief's daughter came closer

and closer when she was

in just the right spot he

darted out of the rock and

[Music]

i think he scared her h* cried the

chief's daughter

she whirled around stepping on baby

rattlesnake's rattle

[Music]

and crushing it to pieces

there he goes baby rattlesnake looked at

his beautiful rattle

scattered all over the trail

he didn't know what to do he

took off for home as fast as he could

with great sobs he told mother and

father what had happened

they wiped his tears and gave him big

rattled snake hugs

for the rest of that day baby

rattlesnake

stayed safe and snug close by

his rattlesnake family

[Music]

i liked it so did i

how did you like that story keno hmm

well

i thought it was uh i thought it was

superno jelly beano

oh that's great kino's a hard word to

rhyme

uh i thought of something just in time

[Laughter]

well why don't we all play kino's

rhyming game

do you think anyone would like to give

it a try

slide yeah

and i would like to eat some pie

so would i and eat some more buy and buy

with some sneaker soup

don't ask me why

sneakers

[Laughter]

oh let's do our story pics the first one

is never spit on your shoes

it's a really funny book and you won't

snooze

it's a wonderful and wild story about

the first day

in first grade and of course we couldn't

leave today

without recommending something with

rhyme

oh that would be a crime this

is the hat and that's that

he has a lot of writing yeah yeah it
