I was a captain at the age
of 22.

There weren't any
participation trophies.

There was three times the amount
of boats out here.

You were expendable.

If you didn't produce,
you were out.

You got to always have
that attitude, gilly.

Always.

Sig: When I look around
at the new guys,

There's a lot of
opportunity lately,

Not a lot of promise.

Jake: We know what's going on.
We're not stupid.

We signed up for this.

What I do know is if you get
a shot to be a captain,

You don't pass it up.

You take it.

Sig: I don't see as much fear
as I would hope to have seen...

They don't seem fearful
because...

-Pull up hard!
-Yeah! [ laughs ]

...I think, in their mind,
there's nothing to fear.

[ laughs ]

Narrator:
24 hours before the start
of the king crab season.

Jake: You know what's nice
about being a captain?

You don't have to be
cold anymore.

Narrator: Captains and crews
race for departure.

Bill: Everybody's pretty much
running max rpm.

It doesn't matter how many years
you come out here.

It's a nervous situation.

Hopefully el niño doesn't
kick our a*s this year.

It sucks being a captain
sometimes.

It really does.

Narrator: Unusual weather
and larger quotas

Will tests captains' resolve.

Sig: There are warmer water
temperatures this year.

That's a fact.

We have a much larger
bairdi quota.

It's up by 30%.

There's a lot of money at stake,
and we want to be the best.

That's all up to the weather.

Narrator: For the next 13 weeks,
the rush is on...

Josh: Just get out there
when that g*n goes off,

Work the guys 24 hours a day,
and make some money.

Narrator:
...To claim the $70 million
bounty of the bering sea.

Johnathan:
It's a pretty cool job.

We get to hunt and trap
and contain.

Out there, you know,
it's either them or us.

[ laughs ]

Jake: I want to change
the image of this boat badly.

Narrator:
On the 107-foot saga...

Elliott got bought out,
so the owner hired me.

It's officially my boat.

Narrator:
Captain jake anderson prepares

For his first full season
at the helm...

Jake: This is what the floor
used to look like,

So we got new floor in,
we got new paint in here,

We got new baseboards.

Narrator: ...By eliminating
any remnants of the past.

New seat cushions,
which are really expensive.

It's crazy how much they cost.

It's my boat now --
like, my boat.

I'm responsible for it 100%.

I want people to identify this
boat with me, not with elliott.

Can we get some paintbrushes?

Narrator: The last of
jake's upgrades...

So, I want to be the one
who paints the name.

I want to be the one who puts
my name on it, you know?

Narrator: ...Giving the logo
a new paintjob.

to him.

Maybe he thinks he's gonna win
them over with his friendship.

the finger pointer.

You got to be the guy
that says what to do.

You can lead by example.

That's the wrong example.

[ horn blowing ]

Every time I try to [bleep]
paint the edge, he honks.

the 128-foot cornelia marie...

Josh: I got faith in this year.
It's gonna be a good year.

we have all the right tools.

We have brand-new motors,

You know, brand-new deck,
damn near brand-new crew.

Narrator: ...Josh harris
and captain casey mcmanus

Are taking a fresh approach
to the upcoming season.

Josh:
Usually in the past,

It's always fixing something
that's breaking.

Casey:
We took the cornelia down to
seattle and did a pretty --

Well, a very serious
shipyard on it --

Probably the biggest shipyard
the boat's ever had.

Narrator: In the past,
the cornelia

Hasn't been known for her
mechanical reliability.

The starboard main
blew a head gasket,

Or maybe two head gaskets.

I can almost take one a season,
but this is getting to be...

I'm just pretty much disgusted
right at the moment

With everything.

Narrator: And after years of
patch jobs and band-A*DS...

Hey! [bleep]

[ rattling ]
what the [bleep] is that?

Narrator:
...The boat has finally gotten
a major overhaul...

The crane has been rebuilt from
the top of the pedestal up.

Winch is rebuilt.
Cylinder's rebuilt.

Narrator: ...From new
electronics in the wheelhouse

To an updated engine room.

This is a 300 kw engine.

We have converted to now
electric hydraulics.

60 horsepower that'll operate
the launcher and table.

Narrator: Even the galley
got a makeover.

That's been walled off to give
ourselves a larger settee.

And that is the new c.M.

Narrator: But making the boat
like new came at a steep price.

Josh: But now instead of me
and casey having our own show,

You know, we got two other guys
to answer to

That have been in
the industry for 35 years.

We got to show them we know
what we're doing.

Narrator:
To pay for the overhaul,

Josh was forced to sell
a majority share

Of the boat to investors.

You know, if we didn't
have this partnership,

Then we probably would have
went bankrupt.

We've been told
we're replaceable.

[ chuckles ]
yeah. Touché.

We better -- we better put
some crab over the rail.

We ended up with quite a bit of
bairdi that needs to be caught,

So we're gonna go out there

And we're gonna fish bairdi
this year.

It's gonna be my first time
fishing bairdi

In the wheelhouse,
along with josh's, of course.

No. We're replaceable.
[bleep] yeah.

If we can't perform
and go out and catch crab,

We are replaceable,
you know?

If we can't do the job,

Then they'll find somebody
that can.

Our pay and our jobs
are performance-based.

If we don't perform...

We're poked.

...Could be replaced.

Narrator: For some,

This year's large bairdi quota
could be a career-saver.

For others...

Sig: The reality is we have
quite a bit of bairdi quota.

I can't do it all.

That's the bottom line.

Narrator: ...It's too much
of a good thing.

I don't want to see any
of the value of that quota

Being left on the table
if I can help it.

Because of that,
I'm looking for a boat

That would be dedicated
to fishing bairdi.

Narrator: To lighten
his 700,000-pound load,

The captain looks to lease
some of his quota.

There's a kid on a boat
called brenna a.

His name is sean dwyer.

It seems like he's got a pretty
level head on his shoulders.

I do know that, uh, you know,
he's a go-getter,

And, um, he's trying to make
this thing work.

Narrator:
Nearly 2,000 miles away,

-Yep.

Sig: I've heard you're looking
for quota.

Is that right?
-Yeah.

I was looking for some opies,

But they're real hard
to come by.

All right. Well, I've got an
opportunity for you, and, uh...

It's bairdi, you know?

It's close to a couple hundred
thousand pounds.

Okay.

With the opies
and the king crab --

I just don't have the time
to do it.

Wow.

Narrator:
Sig offers the young skipper

A golden opportunity --

200,000 pounds of bairdi quota.

I mean, it's something

That might really get your foot
in the door

And start building
on a reputation.

You follow what I'm saying?

Narrator:
Sean's original plan

Was to fish opilio crab
in January.

But committing to sig

Means scrambling to launch
three months earlier.

When I first ran this boat,

You know, I was looking for
advice from a lot of guys,

And -- and, uh...

Didn't seem to get
much advice back.

It's a grind.

The only word that I can use

This is when the gloves come off

And, you know,
the fishing starts.

we're going fishing.

[ cheering ]

Jake: Let's just --

[ laughs ]

Bill: You're not gonna
[bleep] it up.

Now get the [bleep]
out of the wheelhouse.

-Something's going on.
-Downstairs!

Engine room!

Narrator: 1,960 miles southeast
from dutch harbor...

You can just set it right over
there on the dock if that works.

Narrator:
...In seattle, washington...

Well, my name's sean dwyer,
and, uh, I run the brenna a.

Narrator: ...23-year-old
captain sean dwyer

Prepares to join
the alaskan crab fleet.

Sean: Sig wants me
to get going on this.

It's a pretty tight timeframe,
but I'm committed now.

I already told him I'd do it.

I have not ran a crab boat yet.

I know -- I know what
I'm getting into.

I think.

We're talking all the tender
gear off the boat,

And then we'll be bringing on
some crab gear,

Some crab pots later
in the week here.

This is just like a --
one check.

[ chuckles ]
we got a lot more to go.

Narrator:
Primarily a salmon tender,

The brenna a has spent
the last month

Being converted to a crab boat.

Sean: I've been working on boats
since I was 12 years old.

My dad started when he was 19.

My mom's dad fished.
His dad fished.

I've learned a lot, like,
mechanically-wise from him,

'cause he's pretty savvy.

Not your average 23-year-old.

Yeah, 23 is definitely
the youngest

I've ever heard for a skipper,
especially out crabbing.

Jenny:
Sean is 23 years old,

And he pretty much
followed his dad around

From the time he could walk,
doing whatever pat did.

Narrator: In the wheelhouse,
jenny dwyer,

Boat owner
and the captain's mother.

If pat was washing dishes,
sean was right next to him,

Working the spray hose.

Until I got old enough
to realize

That washing dishes
was not fun.

[ laughs ] exactly.

Growing up, I just knew that
this is what I wanted to do.

I wanted to be where my dad was.

His mentality was never
"take it easy on sean

'cause he's my kid."

It was always
"hey, pile it on.

Make it harder for him,"
you know?

"maybe he'll want to do
something else."

You know, pat was --
he was a big, stocky guy.

I mean, you know, he was shoving
crab pots around the deck,

And it got to the point where he
couldn't even pick up a fork.

When you're living with als

And you're watching your father
lose his ability to --

To do stuff...

You figure out what life is
about pretty darn quickly.

Narrator: Three years ago,
sean's dad passed away from als,

Also known as
lou gehrig's disease.

I really admired him for how
strong he was, mentally.

Instead of thinking,
"well, I'm dying, you know?

Here we go,"
it was, "what's next?

You know, how do I get
to where I want to go?"

You just jump in
with both feet.

And so, that's kind of
what I'm doing here.

[ voice breaking ]
he knew that buying this boat

Was gonna be a...

-A good thing.
-...A level of security for us.

And his goal was always to get
this boat out crabbing.

And he just
ran out of time.

Narrator:
With his father gone,

The family's fortunes now rest

On the young
23-year-old's shoulders.

Sean: It's like there's no point
in all the bull[bleep]

If you want to go fishing,
go fishing.

I'm gonna go all in.

Narrator:

We're not even away

Of bill's son,
31-year-old zack larson.

Zack: And hiring people is a big
part of this job up here.

You got to find people
that are gonna work.

Got to spearhead it
and take it on.

Bill:
I've gotten a lot of grief

On some of the guys
I've brought on board,

So I let zack do the hiring
this year.

One, it gives him confidence,

And, two, it lets me take care
of other stuff, you know?

Perfect opportunity
for him to learn.

Narrator:
But the learning process

Hasn't been easy for teacher
or student.

You know, all along,
the idea's been

To get zack to the wheelhouse.

It's cool watching his progress.

what my ambitions are.

But I had some personal issues
at home.

My wife and partner of 25 years
and I are no longer together.

We basically got divorced.

If there's one thing I can

And see if there's a way
to fix it, it would be that.

Now we're on a new chapter.

I'm no longer married.
My kids are growing up.

And, uh...It's kind of crazy.

It's like I'm on my own again.

It's almost like I'm right back
where I started 30 years ago,

Coming into a small
fishing town,

Hoping that I'll be able
to make something work.

Narrator:

This is more of
an old-school area.

It's been over 10 -- been 11
years since I been out here.

Narrator: With the warm waters
of el niño

Spreading across the bering sea,

Captain sig hansen is banking
his first set

On an old honey hole.

Sig:
I'm gonna set down the hill,

And then we're gonna set below
what we just did, even deeper.

Narrator: Before the new season
gets underway...

We should get down there and see
what those guys are doing.

Somebody got to bite that head
for good luck.

see to an old-world tradition.

It's already starting to ooze
