06x12 - The Steam Engine / Orbie in Snow / The Water Sprite's Pearl

it had been a day of scientific

discoveries

katie found out that if you fill a

container to the brim with water

and drop a stone in it the water will

move out of the way

even if it has to spill over the side

or we learned that magnets pull at one

end and

push at the other and they both

discovered that old-fashioned trains

use steam to make their engines right

the family had spent the morning at the

science and technology museum

orbee came home with a new engineer's

hat

in the front yard orbee tutored around

and when katie joined him he asked her

to play train with him

she could be the caboose

he reminded katie that the caboose was

the last car

of the train katie gleefully put her

hands on orbeez elbows and they

slowly chugged out of the station

which was actually the front step as

they were picking up steam

miguel and his dad came up the sidewalk

well

immediately miguel wanted to join the

train

orbee burbled that katie had to move

back because she was the caboose

katie giggled mcgill stepped in

slowly they circled the tree going

faster and faster

as a matter of fact they were going so

fast that orbeez amp blew right off but

nobody noticed it

including orbeez they didn't notice it

because at that moment

they heard a voice calling out for them

to wait it was yi ping

and she joined the train dad came out to

talk with miguel's dad who

had his new camera and dad suggested

that they go for a walk to give the

train a little track

miguel's dad thought that was a great

idea and so did the little short train

as they chew chewed along the sidewalk

orbee didn't notice his hat was missing

he was having so much fun when they got

to mrs perez yard the train

all but disappeared under the weeping

willow and then came out again

mrs peret waved from her front step

admiring the short but noisy train

grin and phoebe looked up from the chalk

drawing on their driveway

and with a nod from their mom they

hurried over to join in the little train

was growing

miguel's dad took a picture

through the train zigzagged right to

tom's house

carl and paulie were on the front step

talking

tom leapt up and grabbed paulie's hand

while he shrieked with laughter as tom

said wherever the train was going

that's where they needed to be

and tom made orbee separate the cars and

shut forward like a real train

to let new cars in when the train came

back to lift the old cars attached again

katie didn't have to move anywhere

because he was already at the back

as the train entered the playground it

was in good chugging

motion and orbeez still hadn't noticed

that his hat was missing

andy arthur dakota and kira raced over

eager to become railroad cars too katie

giggled because

if she knew where she was going the

train

lengthened again engineer orbee looked

at the climber

if you squinted it looked like a sort of

mountain so with a loud

toot be headed for the train

climbed up the mountain and along the

high peaks and across to the slide

where the train of friends slid down in

one long chain

as orbeez slid down he saw a boy he'd

never seen before watching them

he waved at the board to join the long

train but the little boy looked away

orbee smiled and shot off more like a

rocket than a train

everybody shrieked and laughed as they

raced to catch up

the train went right through the wading

pool sandals and all

as it came out on the other side another

group of children in the playground

stopped to watch there was a lot of

silliness as cars bumped into cars and

the front of the train took off leaving

their rear end to catch up

orbee led the train back to the new boy

and burbled that he was welcome to join

them

the little boy looked over at the bench

where his granny was sitting

she nodded or be tooted that he could

squeeze in anywhere between him and the

caboose

who was his best friend katie the boy

just lowered his head

and looked at his toy the train tooted

as orbee realized something he circled

back to the boy and asked him

if he would like to be the engine well

thrilled the boy

jumped up as he stepped into the front

of the line

orbee reached for his engineer's hat and

was shocked

to discover it wasn't there he was

very surprised he looked around but it

was nowhere inside he was very

disappointed

the train waited restlessly

dad thought that they had it probably

blown off

they would go back the way they had come

and hunt for it

the whole train led the idea of hunting

for orbeez half train style

with a very impressive whistle from

arthur they headed out with the little

boy leading the way

as they crossed the main playground path

the train discovered charisse

who was out for a walk with her mom

tom blew a whistle and then told the

train to stop

he shunted backwards and grabbed the

handles of the wheelchair

then he shuddered charissa's wheelchair

back into line

he was very funny to watch him as usual

charisse was laughing with the fight

he pulled off his belt and gave charisse

one end and the other end to bring

the train was all connected again and

within

all aboard they were off

miguel's dad snapped another picture

[Music]

it was hard for orbee to stay worried

about his hat with all of the

chuckling and the chugging going on

at the edge of the playground the little

boy pointed at a woman coming up the

sidewalk with an engineer's hat on

and carrying a big bag it was

mom in orbeez hat

orbee jumped right out of the line and

ran to her

she told him that it had blown off in

his own front yard

when he put the hat on the new boy

[Music]

the entire train cheered yay

and mom told the long line of friends

that if they were hot and thirsty from

their travels

she just happened to have a bag of juicy

and then there was another loud cheer

sprinkled with tootsie yay

every entire train headed for the picnic

area

slowly the cars slipped away and sat

down

ready for the juicy coat the entire

train

enjoyed mom's treat

miguel's dad gave each child a picture

of the train when the film was developed

it was worth remembering they called it

the friendship train and i happen to

know

if you had been there orbee would have

invited you

to join in too

[Music]

giraffes have tongues so long they can

lick their own ears and backs of their

necks

a crocodile's tongue is attached to the

roof of its mouth

your tongue is pretty small but without

it you wouldn't be able to taste the

sweetest chocolatey ice cream

[Music]

it had been a cold winter day Katie

found out that sometimes warm wool

sweaters itch you around your

neck and Orbee learned that if you open

the window a crack a whole lot of cold

air rushes in and they both discovered

that it was great fun to bundle up in a

comforter and read books on a cold winry

day the doorbell rang and the two

friends knew it was Tom because he

always rang it in a funny way they

opened the door and Tom was standing

there holding a piece of paper it was a

flyer he'd received inviting him to

enter the snow sculpture contest at the

local Winter Carnival he told the FR he

might get very lonely out there all by

himself so he thought maybe they should

help him he planned to ask ye ping and

Andy

too for the shortest moment nobody spoke

Orbee and Katie looked at him at DIS

belief it sounded

fantabulous once it was all explained

mom and dad said that they could

help everyone including G ping and Andy

joined in for a creative meeting Tom's

girlfriend paully came too Tom said that

he thought they should do a sculpture of

something special in the neighborhood

when the friends all asked what Tom told

them that they had to think about it it

it should be unique something no other

neighborhood in the whole world had well

everybody sat thinking there was so much

silence a feather would have made a

fluttering sound as it floated to the

ground then one by

one the friends turned to look at Orbee

Orbee smiled at each one of them but he

began to feel uneasy when he felt all

the eyes in the room on

him he smiled weakly and burbled that he

didn't have any idea yet but the thing

was that everybody else in the room had

a great idea their great idea was

Orbee it took a minute for Orbee to make

sense of what everybody was saying but

then he realized that he was the thing

that no other neighborhood

had it was he himself that they wanted

to sculpt in snow Katie loved the idea

and so did Orbee it made him feel very

special in fact I have to say as they

drew pictures of him and examined how he

looked Orbee began to feel special

indeed the whole neighborhood was

delighted the sculpture was to be of

Orbee as he pulled his sled home from

the park people would call him and tell

him he'd be a wonderful

sculpture now at first he and Katie

giggled and enjoyed it but after a while

Orbee began to feel that he was so

amazing that he was even more more

amazing than everyone

else when he brushed his teeth the next

morning Katie noticed that he stared at

himself in the mirror a lot he made

faces and struck poses and Katie G

because as usual Orbee was funny but

after a while it became a little too

much Orbee began to criticize Katie when

she

danced then he told her how to do a

funny face when she drw

now he didn't mean to but as the day of

the sculpture contest got closer Orbee

was hurting Katie's feelings more more

mom explained to Katie that he was just

excited about being the subject of the

sculpture dad told Katie that good

friends support one another so Katie did

her

best she smiled when Orbee interrupted

her or burbled too

loudly on the day of the sculpture

contest Orbee strutted around as the

friends worked he was a little rude to

them and pointed out where things

weren't exactly

right when he told Katie a second time

that she wasn't doing her part well

Katie gave him a look of annoyance she

was very close to being angry with

him I think Tom could tell that Orbee

wasn't exactly helping so he asked if

Paulie and Orbee would please get some

hot chocolate for the

workers Orbee felt very important as he

Tred off with

poly with Orby gone the team worked hard

and fast and soon enough it was

finished they stood around the snow

sculpture and admired their work they

were saying how good it looked as poly

and Orbee came up behind them Orbee

immediately pointed out that it didn't

really look like him he thought the nose

should be longer and his knees never

looked the way they' made

them as Polly handed out the hot

chocolate everybody on the team's side

it was really disappointing that Orbee

didn't like the results of their hard

work they sipped their drinks sadly as

the judges came up behind them I think

because they were all feeling bad nobody

expected the judges to say that the

sculpture was very impressive but that's

exactly what they said everybody beamed

until Orbee cheerfully tuted that he had

to make most of it himself by pointing

out where people had made errors

there was silence around Orbee and

nobody more silent than

Katie the judges nodded approvingly and

moved to the next sculpture Tom put his

arm around Orbee and he told them that

nobody liked a person who took credit

for other people's

work Orbee was shocked not quite

understanding Tom pointed out that Orbee

had done no work in the sculpture at all

all he had done was tell people what

they were doing wrong which wasn't

helpful at

all Orbee looked down at the snow he

hadn't realized he' been doing that but

as Tom explained Orbee came to

understand it was completely true Orbee

felt just awful about it he lowered his

head and burbled that he was

sorry Katie looked like the words I'm

sorry weren't going to help much or be

bble that he hadn't meant to be mean or

rude then he opened his arms for a

hug Katie smiled it was really hard to

stay angry at your best friend

especially when he hadn't meant to be

mean the judges announced that the Orbee

sculpture was the winner and cheers

rippled around the crowd Tom suggested

they all go to the restaurant and have a

juice to celebrate when they walked into

the little restaurant there was a mirror

Orbee stopped to gaze at himself but

this time time when he did it Katie

grabbed his arm and pulled him toward

the table in Juice Orbee was

surprised and then he started to laugh

he laughed so hard that everybody in the

whole restaurant started to laugh

too and I just happened to know that if

you had been there you'd have laughed

too because it was really really funny

[Music]

know it's pretty tough to hold your

breath for too long while swimming

underwater that's why divers use scuba

tanks they're full of air and let you

breathe underwater for a long long

[Music]

time just imagine what you might see if

you go scuba diving one day

what

it had been a day of cottage fun

katie found out that even spiders have

babies

orbee learned that the sun goes down on

one side of the cottage

and comes up on the other side and they

both discovered

one day's bud is another day's flower

dad had just finished picking up a few

sharp rocks from the beach area

he was heaving them with all of his

might way out into the lake

out there they couldn't hurt anybody's

feet he brushed the sand off his hands

as katie and orbee came over with the

treasure

it was a clam shell

that explained that a clam lived on the

bottom of the lake and opened and closed

its shell to swim

he told them that in the ocean clams

were bigger

and they also had cousins called oysters

people love to eat katy and army made

squidgy faces at the thought

dad said there was something else

interesting about oysters he said that

the bottom of the ocean was often sandy

and sometimes sand

would get inside the oyster shell the

sand would feel so scratchy that to

protect itself the oyster built a sort

of coating around the grain of sand

when people caught the oysters to eat

they found a surprise inside

a little pale colored bead called a

pearl

people use these beats to make beautiful

jewelry

the oyster's irritation was now man's

treasure

well katie and orbee thought this was

fascinating

and as dad set out his lawn chair to

watch them play on the beach

an idea was brewing inside katie and

orbeez

katie raced into the cottage and grabbed

her pop beads and a

filmy piece of costume gauze to wear

or be raced down to the boathouse for

his fishing

in minutes they were ready to start

katie told orbee she was a water sprite

as she

scattered her beads around the sand

seeing as how she was a creature of the

ocean the oysters were her friends

pearls were annoying the oysters so she

was collecting them and stringing them

together

that way they would be out of the way

orbee loved her plan and burbled that

he was a shipwrecked fisherman

as the game began orbee waded into the

water

fishing net water wings and all and then

and katie laughed

as he hauled himself out of the shallow

water and threw himself on the shore

huffing and fluffing orbee

just loved to act fisherman orbee told

the water sprite that he was very sad

because

his fishing boat had just sunk in a

terrible storm

and now he had nothing but his empty net

water sprite felt sorry for the

fisherman and suggested that

perhaps he tried to do something else

for his living something new

maybe he could be a carpenter the

fisherman thought about this

then he went to the employment office

which is where you go to get a job

then was a little surprised to find out

that he was the

employment officer or be whispered that

dad

needed to pretend that orbee couldn't do

anything else

but be a fisherman they had nodded his

understanding

and the game continued while the

fisherman was gone

the water sprite discovered another

pearl and added it to her string

[Music]

the employment officer told the little

fisherman very kindly of course

that unless he was trained to use saws

and hammers and nails

he just couldn't be a carpenter

well the fisherman was pretend

disappointed

at the news and went back to the beach

to think of a new plan back at the beach

orbee sat beside the water sprite and

explained his troubles

the water sprite who had just added

another pearl to his string

told the fisherman that maybe he should

think of something else

i have to say the little fisherman loved

fishing the most and couldn't think of

another thing to do

the sprite didn't know a lot about jobs

but she suggested that he try to be a

farmer

[Music]

the fishermen perked up there were no

saws and such in farming so

he headed back to the employment office

dad smiled at the little fisherman

when he asked about farming and told him

that unless he knew about

tilling planting and growing it would be

very hard to be a farmer

well the little fisherman was getting

very discouraged

sad and out of hope he returned to the

beach

the water sprite who by this time had

quite a long string of pearls

tried to make the fisherman feel better

she thought and she thought and finally

she suggested

he'd try being a fireman after all they

worked with water

and he loved water the fisherman cast a

sorrowful look out toward the lake

that was pretending to be an ocean and

sighed

he'd try again but sad as it was the

employment officer shook his head

firemen were highly trained in dealing

with dangerous things and unless he knew

how to do that

there was very little chance

[Music]

while the fisherman was gone the sprite

decided to take a break

from picking up pearls and lay the

string of them down on the beach

orbee dragged himself back to the beach

and threw himself down

there was no hope katie and dad chuckled

in the middle of this very dramatic sad

moment

he discovered he was lying on something

bumpy

when he got up he looked and he

discovered the water sprites pearls

the fishermen looked at them in surprise

the water sprite apologized for the

lumpy bumpy pearls she had just put them

there for a minute

the fisherman who was getting very

excited

asked if they came from oysters and the

water sprite nodded

yes the fishermen looked at the water

sprite astonished

pearls are very valuable he pointed out

water sprites smiled she had no need for

money or valuable things

she only needed the water and her friend

as the fisherman was looking at the

pearls with big eyes the sprite told him

he could have them if they could help

orbee did him crazy joyful happy

fisherman

dance and now he could finally buy a new

boat

katie announced that from that day on a

water sprite and the fisherman were

great friends

he always relieved her of the nasty

pearls and she was glad to be rid of

them

then orbee grabbed katie up in his dance

of celebration

water splashed all over the place put

mostly on the employment officer who

left up and

joined the fun katie and harvey loved

that the pearls got recycled into

something precious

and i'm sure that you do too after all

everything on earth

has a value especially you
