06x03 - Orbie's Special Thing / Mine! / The Summer Grocery Store

it had been a day of construction

katie learned that when you put dark

purple crayon over a whole bunch of

other crayon colors

and scratch some of it off it makes a

pretty picture

orbee found out that when the whole

family does hand prints the prints come

out

in different sizes and they both

discovered that

when you have crayons markers colored

papers and scissors

you can make some really interesting

artwork

the two best friends have been drawing

for about an hour when orbee turned to

katie and asked if maybe she

wanted to do something else katie looked

up from her drawing of a huge dragon

and smiled at him she wasn't tired of

drawing yet

she still wanted to do more orbeez

looked at her somewhat astonished

how could she want to do more when they

already had been drawing for so long

katie clocked her head and thought a bit

then she beamed at her best friend

that in fact drawing was very special to

her

it was what she loved to do most she

loved it so much

that she could do it for a long time

and with a smile she turned back to

finish coloring the dragon's eyes

orbee watched a moment katie was very

good at drawing

it wasn't surprising that she loved it

so much

orbee thought about how lucky katie was

to have

a special thing that she loved like that

it was at that moment that orbee

realized he didn't have his own special

thing

he loved to do all kinds of different

things and was good at a lot of them

but as he thought about it he realized

there

really didn't seem to be any one thing

that was special above the rest

he left katie at her art table and

thought about that

and orbee decided that today was the day

he would find out what his special thing

was

impulsively which means without thinking

too much about it

orbee cartwheeled through the bedroom

door and back again

he loved to cartwheel it was fun

actually

it was it was lots of fun maybe

cartwheeling was orbee's special thing

that

in truth orbee didn't think it was

he sighed finding his special thing

could be tricky

then orbee jumped up on the wall of the

bedroom and

climbed along the ceiling all the way

around katie's room

or be beamed maybe this was his special

thing

after all he was the only one he knew

who could do it katie giggled at him

as she colored in the dragon's feet

orbee smiled back at her

hopeful that ceiling climbing could be

his special thing

but as he looked at katie he noticed how

perfectly she'd drawn the feet

and he leapt down ceiling climbing

really wasn't all that important not

like drawing beautifully

orbee scratched his head and he went

over to the

little cassette tape player and put some

boppy music on

he boogied and spun and jumped and

wiggled

and while he he danced at a storm

katie giggled again and clapped to the

music as orbee moved to the beat

then orbee ran up the wall and flipped

over

now thinking he'd finally found his own

special thing

dancing he smiled joyfully until he

spotted

his building blocks and had another

thought

he loved to caught wheel and ceiling

climb and dance

but he also loved to build crazy things

with the blocks

maybe building with blocks was his

special thing

he'd give it a try within seconds

an amazing city rose from the floor

katie's room

orbee built tall spiky buildings and

winding roads and long tunnels

and well just just about the best block

city anyone could build

katie who had finished her dragon

drawing looked over at orbeez

masterpiece

and said it was spectacular

she immediately grabbed a pencil and

paper and started to draw it

orbee leaned against the bed and grimmed

and finally

he found his favorite special thing and

he was good at it

katie had even said so herself he was

very pleased with himself and he would

have remained pleased

except for one thing he looked over at

the costume box

it made him think of something else

he loved to make up plays and silly

stories of act out crazy characters

orbee dived for the costume box

and he came out dressed as a clown

and as katie was trying to concentrate

on her drawing in this block city

orbee wiggled and made funny faces

he pretended to do a ball trick but the

ball slipped from his fingers and shot

straight up in the air

barbie leapt up and caught the ball in

midair including he burst out laughing

as he landed in a tumble on her bed

orbeez sat on the bed

delighted that she had liked his silly

act but as he sat there he began to

realize that

there were many fun things that he was

really good at but

there was still not one thing that was

more

special than all the others he pulled

off his funny clown hat

and verbal sadly that if he didn't have

his own special thing

it must mean that there really wasn't

anything special

about him at all

well as you can imagine katie looked at

him

dumbfounded for a moment she could

barely speak

and she climbed up on the bed beside

orbee

she put her arm around her disappointed

little friend and told him that

she could hardly believe what he was

saying

he told her he just wanted to have a

special thing like

she had with her drawing katie

wiped away the little tear that was

trickling down orbee's cheek

katie jumped off the bed and took

orbee's hand

she dragged him to the mirror and orbee

looked at himself doubtfully

she told him that he was looking at

someone who

no matter what he did made it special

just by being a part of it she told

orbee there was nothing like him on

earth and

that made him special he was unique

one of a kind he didn't need a

special thing orbee looked at his

reflection for a moment

then he raised his head and hands high

in the air

he tooted with its joy he

tooted such a loud tooth that dad came

running in

when dad asked what was wrong orbee

tooted joyously that he had just

discovered that he did have

a special thing of his own dad wasn't

too sure what he was talking about

or be trumpeted that the special thing

was him

himself katie and bad cheer

and do you know i think if you had been

there

you'd have cheered too after all it was

true

orbee is very special just the way he is

just like you

did you know pigs and people

are the only mammals that can get

sunburned to protect themselves from

sunburns

pigs roll in the mud people on the other

hand

use sunscreen so the next time you're at

the beach

make sure you protect yourself from the

sun and hopefully with sunscreen

it had been a day of

unwrapping katie discovered that

sometimes gifts looked too good to open

but not for long orbee learned that with

a kitchen knife

dad could open the package easily and

they both discovered

that with a wrapped-up present guessing

what was inside was

a great deal of fun

it was midwinter katie and orbee had

just received some very

special gift from uncle ed who missed a

few birthdays because he lived in

another country

today katie's was a beautiful

workstation with

all kinds of places to put her artwork

and supplies

she was delighted orbeez was a super

duper

racing sleigh and had steering handles

and brakes and it had a place for your

body and your feet

it was designed after real racing

sleighs

for the longest time orbee just stood

dumbfounded

and he looked at it he didn't move and

when katie said his name

he left up in the air and wiggled all

the way down

this was one of the best presents that

he'd

ever received

twitches and fidgets rumbled through

orbee as dad set up katie's new

workstation

she had all kinds of sections left to

fill but

she knew orbee was anxious to get

outside so she touched dad's arm

she told him she could do it later after

tobogganing

orbee didn't even wait for dad's

response he shot up in the air

and he didn't even touch the floor until

he reached the stairs

by the time katie picked up one boot

orbee was dressed and holding his sleigh

at the front door

katie giggled to herself

and soon with dad and toe they were off

at the top of the hill no one wanted to

hear about katie's new workstation

everybody gazed at orbeez sl*ve it was

simply fantabulous

grinned proudly and sat on it

prepared to go down the hill and

everybody watched

orbee adored all the attention the

friends wanted to see how the whole

thing worked

that at the bottom wave that was ready

for orbee if he needed help

miguel shoved orbee off

he almost flew down the hill

dad signaled to orbee to put the brakes

on orbeez pulled them and the

fabulous sleigh came to a stop

at the top of the hill everybody

applauded

orbee looked up and took a bow

then he did a nosedive into the snow to

make his friends laugh

and at that very moment orbee felt like

a king

felt like he had the very best sleigh on

the hill

as he ran up to the top again he noticed

his friends gathering there and they

were all looking at orbeez

they thought they wanted to look at the

sleigh again so he was a bit surprised

when arthur asked if he could have a

turn

orbee looked from the sleigh to arthur

looked at his other friends too and

they all wanted to turn orbee ran his

mitten hand

along the smooth edge of the new sleigh

he knew it wasn't exactly nice but

orbeez snorkeled to all of his friends

that it was his new sleigh and he was

going to be the one riding it

a look of disappointment across their

faces even katie's

but katie picked up her toboggan and

thumped the snow off she pointed out

that

it was hard to share something brand new

and to her delight yi ping and andy

nodded

sometimes it really was as yi ping sat

down on the toboggan behind her

katie added that it wasn't what you were

on it was the ride that counted

and with that she and all of the friends

shoved off

orbee stood by all by himself feeling a

little sheepish

[Music]

but realized he got what he wanted she

smiled and tore down the hill

faster than all of the others

at the end of the day katie and orbee

leaned the sleigh and toboggan against

the wall at the back of the house

that night as they slept a huge

snowstorm spiraled into action and left

drifts of snow

over everything the next morning

katie and orbee were delighted to see

all the new snow

they ate breakfast as quickly as they

could

at the back they found the snow had

knocked things over and

buried others katie pulled her toboggan

out of the snow and brushed it off

it must have been a very big wind

but orbee was shocked the only thing

lying there in the snow

was katie's toboggan orbee's sleigh

was completely gone or be looked under

bushes and

dug in the snow at suspicious bumps only

to find

rocks or the corner of the sandbox orbee

couldn't even burble

he was so upset he trudged into the

house to tell mom and dad

dad already in his jacket and boots came

out to take a look

mom followed tugging on her jacket orbee

hung his head low

he burbled that the wind took it because

orbee hadn't shared yesterday

and mom was surprised that he hadn't

shared

but she assured him that that was not

why

dad told orbee that the sleigh was light

and the wind must have been strong it

literally blew away

was no one's fault katie hugged orbee

and told him he could share the toboggan

as they had done before but

that didn't sound like fun to orbee

i have to tell you orbee was feeling

very bad

about not sharing yesterday he thought

if he only had it back he'd be sure to

give

everybody a turn a little tear trickled

down his face

katie asked him to please come into

bargain with her

at that very second at the end of the

yard chance leapt over a snowy bush and

meowed as he slid down something

slippery

katie and orbee looked up at his meow

and

then looked at each other chance had

found the sl*ve

it had shot right across the yard and

was stopped by the bushes at the very

end

and with a hoop or to shriek or be

raced over to get it and that day

katie was the first down the hill on

orbeez slain

after that each friend had free turn

it was ages before orbee got to turn

himself

but when he did he felt grand

the slay may not have gotten lost

because he didn't share but

sharing was so much more fun than

keeping something all to yourself

and i hope if you get something special

and and find it hard to share that you

remember

orbeez be a good sharer with all your

friends

i know each one of them will appreciate

it

did you know every single snowflake has

its own

shape you can even make your own special

snowflake

just take a piece of paper and fold it

like this

now take your scissors and cut some

designs in your piece of paper

then unfold the paper and see how pretty

your snowflake looks

wow each one is really different

[Music]

it had been a day

of curious things katie found out that

when you mix apple and grape juice

together

you get grapple juice and it's really

yummy

orbee found out that at the end of a box

of crunchy cereal

there's a lot of powdery stuff and they

both discovered

that grocery day is a great time for

things to run out

it was clear from the emptiness in the

fridge that mom had to go grocery

shopping it was her turn

she looked around dad was busy reading a

new book

katie and orbee were playing a game with

giant tiddlywinks on the kitchen floor

mom was hoping for some help but it

didn't look too encouraging

as she was putting some old newspapers

in the recycling box

mom noticed a picture that showed a

different kind of grocery store

it would be fun to try with any luck her

family

would come with her she went upstairs

and loaded her beach bag with her

bathing suit and a towel

and when she plucked it down on the

kitchen table

everybody looked up mom didn't say

anything

she just grabbed a juice bottle from the

fridge and she put it in her beach bag

she told the family that sometimes

grocery shopping could be a hot and

thirsty business

[Music]

dad put the book down and leaned on the

kitchen table

he wanted to know what she was talking

about

katie and orbee wanted to know too and

left the tiddlywinks on the floor to see

mom smiled and told them that she had

read about a very different grocery

store

one where grocery shopping wasn't the

only thing that you did there

dad looked at her beach bag and asked

what else do you do at this grocery

store

mom beamed they'd all need bathing suits

katie and orbee were gone

dad put his bookmark on his book and

took it upstairs

mom smiled to herself she loved to spend

saturday with her family in minutes

everybody was in the car all buckled up

mom told them

it was going to be fun to try something

new

ready for adventure she started the car

[Music]

they drove right by the regular grocery

store as a matter of fact they drove

right by almost everything in town and

kept driving

soon they were out in the country i have

to tell you

as they drove on katie and orbee

wondered

why a grocery store would be so far away

from people

mom told them that they'd see why in a

second

and with that she turned the car in at a

huge

barn painted in bright colors

as mom stopped the car dad katie and

orbee looked at each other

dad told mom he hoped this didn't mean

that they had to grow the groceries

they'd be here for a while katie and

orbee giggled but

they shot out of the car it was a farm

and they'd be happy to stay forever

mom waved them over to the barn as they

went inside

they were surprised to find it really

was like a grocery store

it had almost everything they needed in

it

katie and orbee went to find carrots

they looked along the wooden counter

which seemed to go on for miles

and it was full of freshly picked

vegetables and they found the carrots

which were huge and very orange

the farmer brought a bag over he and his

son

and picked most of the vegetables that

morning it was nothing like fresh

vegetables

and to prove it he gave them each a

crunchy carrot to taste

as katie and orbee crunched mom said

they

had everything there were all kinds of

yummy things piled up at the cash

register most of them were vegetables

and fruits

katie told mom this was so much fun or

be noble quietly to mom

why had they brought their bathing suits

[Music]

mom smiled just then the farmer asked

them

if they would like a nice swim while he

packed up the groceries

katie and orbee looked at each other now

they were talking they spun around to

head out but you stopped where was the

pool

the old farmer came out from behind the

counter and led them out of the huge

barn

he said they didn't have a pool but they

did have a pond

behind the barn a beautiful pond rippled

waiting for them

there was an old tree that hung over the

water and if you were brave enough

you could grab hold of a rope attached

to it and swing out over the water

let yourself drop in orbee was bouncing

with excitement

the kindly farmer pointed to the change

hut he headed back

inside to pack up their things katie and

mom and dad

chased a pink blur to the change hut

well mom was the first one on the rope

she swung

way out over the pond giggling all the

way

and then she shrieked and let go and

with a great splash

she landed in the water when she came up

she told them

it was fabulous fun orbee was next

mom stayed out there in the water to

catch him if he needed it

and he leapt off holding the rope and

swung out and

the rope spun as it carried him and when

he got near mom he let go

in the air orbeez spun all by himself

and then made a tiny little splash in

the water

mom grasped his arm orbee was just fine

he swam back for another turn katie

swung out

and did a cannonball then dad had his

turn

he ran back a little and then reached up

high and the rope and swung

way up in the air and when he was up as

high as he could go

he pretended he was scared and he held

on and dragged his feet across the water

until he got closer to the shore and he

plopped him

everybody laughed

well the rope jumping got crazier than

just as it was time to go

orbee did an amazing final jump

as the rope was swinging out he climbed

higher and this time

when he let go he spread his arms wide

like a swan

and then did three mid-air

tumbles into the water even the funnel

clap for him

on the way home or be verbal that even

at the very best grocery store in town

you didn't get to swim

dad nodded grocery shopping was turning

out to be fun

going to be hard to wait until next week

to go grocery shopping again

katie and orbee agreed and do you know

there may be some special place near you

where ordinary things happen with a

little something extra attached

if you find one i hope you and your

family
