05x06 - The Lumpy Bed / Vincent and the Art Gallery / The Buskers

it had been a night of giggles katie

found out when you paint the end of your

nose red

you look a lot like a clown orbee

realized

a big fluffy green wig makes you look

like a wild and crazy

mushroom and they both discovered that

sometimes when you put costumes on

they make you feel like somebody else

katie and orbee performed the silliest

play for mom and dad who certainly

enjoyed it

and then it was bedtime with teeth

brushed

faces scrubbed quick stories and good

night kisses all around

they were finally tucked in and ready

for a good night's sleep

or so it seemed katie who was still

a little excited from doing the silly

play talked to orbee while he was trying

to fall asleep

finally orbee could stay awake no longer

and

burbled he had to go to sleep katie was

quiet of course but in her head there

was

a whole lot of talking going on she

tried to stop the talking by rolling

over

but it didn't actually help then she sat

up

and punched her pillow when she flopped

down again

it wasn't right so she did this a few

times and

after a moment she realized that she was

uncomfortable because there seemed to be

a big lump in her bed in the light

streaming in through the whole door

katie got out of bed and patted her

bedsheet to see if she could find the

lumpy spot

she didn't have any luck mom or dad

would be better at it she thought to

herself

she would go see if they could fix her

lumpy bed with that in mind

she tiptoed out of the room

in the hall she could hear mom and dad

talking in the living room

katie tiptoed down the stairs and peeked

into the room

mom asked what was wrong dad looked

surprised to see her it was late

katie told them that there was a

gigantic lump in her bed

she just couldn't get to sleep mom went

up with katie to investigate

investigate means to find out what it

was

katie and mom tiptoed in so they

wouldn't wake orbee who was sound asleep

in the closet

mom looked at katie's bed she searched

for a lump but

she didn't find anything one of the

sheets was rumpled from katie turning

over in bed though so mom

straightened it out katie climbed in

again

mom kissed her cheek and left the room

katie closed her eyes and she really did

try to fall asleep

she rolled from one side to the other

she kicked her blankets off and then

pulled her blankets up but no matter how

hard she tried

sleep just wasn't coming to her she

headed for mom and dad again

out in the hall she saw that mom and dad

had gone to bed

their bedroom door was closed slowly

katie opened the door

and silently entered she stood at mom's

side of the bed and told mom that

she just couldn't sleep

mom opened one sleepy eye

she crawled out of bed and helped katie

back into hers

mom sat on the edge of the bed and sang

katie a lullaby grandma used to sing to

her

katie loved the song and it did make her

feel sleepy

she closed her eyes and tried hard to

sleep

mom silently left the room and headed

back to her bed

katie lay still for a few more moments

but soon her eyes popped open

sleep just wasn't happening

back in mom's room mom looked at her and

said

oh katie in a very sleepy voice

dad woke up and when katie explained her

problem

dad dragged himself from the bed and he

took katie back into her room

this time dad surprised katie he turned

on her bedside light

and brought some of her favorite books

over to her katie wasn't sure what dad

was doing but she loved books

[Music]

dad sat sleepily beside her he told

katie that sometimes

when sleep won't come the best thing you

can do is try to stay awake

katie looked out at the window at the

twinkling night sky

it was certainly not a time to be awake

when you're only five years old

dad agreed but if there was no other way

of falling asleep

if you tried everything then the best

thing was to

try to not fall asleep so

katie sat up on her bed with her little

lamp on

dad left the room and headed back to bed

she was pretty sure she'd be awake until

wednesday

but nothing else had worked so she might

just as well give it a try

she opened her big book and looked at

the pictures of a happy whale

she loved it when the whales saved the

ship in a storm

suddenly katie found her eyes drooping

they couldn't keep looking at the

picture of the whale

katie's head fell forward kitty shook

herself to

stay awake she turned the page and

looked at the next picture

the book slipped and bopped her

on the head staying

awake was hard

orbee who had been having a terrific

sleep woke up and noticed katie's light

was on

the book was leaning on katie's head and

katie looked a little funny orbee

flipped down and crossed over to katie's

bed he tapped her on the shoulder

katie looked at him through heavy eyes

orbeez that he wanted what she was doing

katie smiled tiredly and told him she

was trying to stay up

orbee who'd had plenty of sleep thought

maybe he should help

he looked around the room and found a

toy trumpet

he tooted it near katie she she

shot right up in her bed orbee pointed

out that now she was awake

katie explained she was trying to stay

awake

so that she could fall asleep but now

orbee was waking her up and

all she wanted to do was sleep orbee

he shrugged and headed back to the

closet

some things were really complicated he

climbed up on his hanger

and within seconds was asleep katie

who'd had such a shock at the sound of

the toy trumpet

was now once again wide

awake she sighed and picked up her book

but she didn't even get to the second

page before

the book fell over and bopped her on the

head

finally katie slept and orbee too

dad checked on them both but they were

sleeping so deeply

they didn't hear him at all from that

night on whenever katie had trouble

sleeping

she always tried to stay awake and

it worked every time i

hope if you ever have trouble sleeping

you'll remember katie and how she

finally fell asleep

did you know you can make a water glass

bin

have mom or dad help you pour different

amounts of water into glasses

and then tap them softly with a spoon

the different water levels make

different musical notes

just make sure you don't get thirsty

during your performance

it had been a morning

of art katie discovered that when you

paint with a lot of colors

it's important to keep the brushes

separate orbee found out that

it isn't very easy to draw a straight

line

and they both learned that crayons

pencils markers and paints

all worked together to make your picture

beautiful

as katie painted orbee opened up the

clay container and began to make an

animal shape

with the clay the clay was pretty messy

and some did land on the end of his nose

but he didn't notice orbee was trying to

find out what animal

wanted to come out of the clay soon it

was obvious

that it was a hippopotamus

he had big eyes and fat legs

orbee was very pleased with it he showed

it to katie

who giggled and said it was terrific

mom was in the kitchen making a dessert

for dinner when orbee walked in with his

sculpture of the hippopotamus

she was very impressed with what he had

done

when dad walked in the door with

groceries he had to put them down

he was so impressed with orbeez

sculpture mom and dad told orbee that he

was growing up to be a

a real artist and orbee felt wonderful

katie was a good painter and he loved

having something special that he was

good at

mom picked up the hippopotamus and told

orbee that he should show it to vincent

vincent was a professional sculptor and

he would surely love to see orbeez work

well it didn't take orbee more than six

seconds

to get his snowsuit boots and mitts on

mom put the hippo on a plastic bag and

he was off

when vincent opened the door he invited

orbee in

orbee held up the hippo for vincent to

see

vincent took it out of the bag and

didn't say anything

and for a second orbee wasn't sure at

all if he liked it

a little ball was forming an orbeez

tummy that was making him feel

a lot like his hippopotamus was the

dumbest one

ever dumb to a real artist like vincent

that is

he swallowed a big gulp but orbee was

wrong

vincent put his hand on his chest and he

told orbee

that it was wonderful or he couldn't

help but he

jumped up and down and caught wheeled

with excitement

vincent said his hippo was good enough

to be

in an art gallery that was hard to do

when you're still so very young

and in the middle of a cartwheel orbee

stopped

he realized he didn't really know what

an art gallery

was vincent smiled and went to the phone

he asked mum if he and orbee could go on

a quick trip to the art gallery

mum thought it was a fabulous idea

in no time orbee found himself at the

huge doors of the art gallery

inside vincent bought two tickets and

they each handed one to the man at the

beginning of the huge hallway

orbee and vincent walked up a long slope

and finally found themselves under an

enormous glass roof

orbee looked up and could see the bright

blue sky above them

vincent told aubry this was called the

great hall

the whole room was made of windows

vincent said

the room was used for parties and ba*ls

to celebrate sculptures and artists of

all kinds

who had their work in the gallery orbee

had never seen such a big party room he

imagined himself at a very grand ball

dancing with katie

holding orbee's hand vincent walked

toward another room with a lot of walls

on the walls hung pictures bigger than

orbee himself

some were even bigger than vincent they

were huge

some were of families dressed in old

clothes

vincent told him these were families

like

orbeez from a long time ago some of the

other pictures were of fields and

mountains and animals

orbee thought that they were all

beautiful

in the middle of the floor and

throughout the room were all sorts of

different sculptures

there were big ones and small ones orbee

just loved them and

hurried from one to the other

or be noticed you could sit on little

benches at the center of the room

so vincent sat down and told orbee to

find the sculpture that he loved the

best

orbee knew he had to be careful near the

precious things in the gallery

he did a silly tiptoe walk

around the room as he looked at the

beautiful sculptures

he liked them all when he turned to look

at the last one

orbee knew that he'd found his favorite

it was the sculpture of a little girl

sitting on her mother's lap

this was his favorite because it

reminded him of

katie and mom next vincent told orbee

that they were going to see

other kinds of art they walked into a

room with

huge sculptures they were made of big

pieces of metal and glass in

strange and beautiful shapes

there were other sculptures too made

from other materials

vincent said some were bronze and pewter

some were made from

clay and stone orbee had never been

in a room quite like this one

next they found the modern art section

which was really fun there was a bicycle

stuck to a wall

and a foot coming out of a white pasty

thing and

paintings of bold colors and curious

shapes

orbee liked all of the modern art as a

matter of fact he stood up on a bench

and

made himself into an art piece just like

one of the crazy sculptures in the room

vincent laughs or be asked if people

ever looked for vincent's work in the

gallery

vincent smiled broadly he told orbee

he imagined a very few did he was not a

famous

artist like the ones whose work was in

the gallery

vincent told him that every artist

started out just like orbee

when they were young they loved creating

things it was easy for them because

they had a talent for it so when they

grew up

they became so good they were able to

sell their creations

some even got their artwork hung in the

gallery

orbee smiled looked at the walls

when he pointed out that there wasn't

much space left for him

vincent grinned as they walked through

the great hall again

he told orbee he imagined they could

find a very special place indeed

orbee imagined his sculpture placed

right next to the one of the mother and

daughter and that made him feel very

happy

he was going to work hard on his art and

maybe someday

that's exactly where it would be

and do you know if you like to create

art

and you work hard at it one day you

might find one of your art pieces

hanging in a gallery too you

never know

did you know all of those really big

trucks you might see on the road

are very helpful some trucks take food

to grocery stores

they can carry live animals to farmers

and some trucks

even carry the mail you never know when

a great big truck

could bring a great big something

special just for you

it had been a morning of getting ready

katie discovered that when you're in a

hurry sometimes

even when you're hungry you forget to

eat

orbee found out that if you find a

really good place to hide something

special you just might have a lot of

trouble

remembering where it is and chance

learned that

when lots of family feet are racing

around the very best place for a cat

is under the couch it was an

autumn saturday morning mom had to go

into town for a meeting

dad said he would take the two friends

to the toy store

that way they could all have a trip into

the city

it wasn't long before everyone was

dressed katie and orbee made sure chance

had enough food and water as

they were not going to be back until the

evening

katie was sure the chance wanted to come

but dad told her that

chance would much rather snooze on the

cats and go for a car ride

and i think dad was right because even

as they discussed it

chance slipped under the couch and

stayed there

katie and obi both brought their

backpacks they each had a teddy and a

sweater

in case it got cool and a little wallet

with some of their savings in it

katie lifted her backpack onto her

shoulders orbee did too

but he swung it so hard it spun him

around in a circle

in the car mom and dad talked about

parking places

that seemed really boring but when they

got into the city

katie and orbee realized why

there were cars everywhere some honked

their horns and some were parking at the

side of the road

dad asked everyone to help him find a

place to park their car

katie found one but it was actually a

space for a fire hydrant

you couldn't park there because if there

was ever a fire

a fire truck would need to get to the

hydrant for water

mom found one too but it turned out to

be a loading zone

only trucks making deliveries were

allowed to park there

trucks often brought big boxes full of

heavy things so they

needed to park at a special door close

to the stores and offices

they all looked as hard as they could

and it seemed pretty hopeless

for a while until orbee tweeted that he

saw one ahead

dad turned on his signal to tell the

cars behind him that he was going to

turn and in they went

it was a perfect place with a parking

meter

that would let them stay for a long time

when they had parked the car

mom grabbed her briefcase gave kisses

all around

and shot off to her meeting dad let

katie and orbee put some coins in the

meter

and they were off orbee noticed that the

street was noisy

machines were fixing the road and some

were working on a construction site

there were car horns and people noises

orbee thought of their backyard it was a

lot quieter than the city street

it was just about that very moment when

orbee heard something else

in fact katie heard it too they both

stopped dad from walking so they could

figure out

where it was coming from it seemed to be

music

and it seemed to be nearby dad pointed

to a crowd

he told the friends he was pretty sure

it was coming from over in that

direction

orbee wanted to race ahead but dad held

his hand tightly and reminded him

with a big smile that when they were

downtown

they had to stay together so together

they went off to investigate

the music was bouncy and jazzy

katie and orbee could feel their feet

wanting to dance

of course all they could see were the

backs of a lot of grown-ups and

nothing that was making music

dad squeezed into the crowd and strained

to see

then he told katie and orbee they were

going to

love this there were buskers

well orbee did a little dance of joy

buskers he tooted

katie tapped him on the shoulder and

asked him what buskers were

and or he stopped he he didn't know

at that moment katie felt herself being

lifted up in the air and as dad held her

up

she could finally see what buskers were

in the center of all of the people were

two boys and a girl

the girl was playing a guitar one boy

was playing a saxophone

and the other played drums their band

was set up right in the middle of the

street

katie could see people walk up to them

and walk back

as dad held orbee up for a look katie

asked what they were doing and dad

explained that the

musicians were entertaining the people

on the street

if they liked the performance people

could put coins in the guitar case to

let them know

that was how buskers made money

orbee rocked and blopped up in dad's

arms and the musicians must have seen

him

they called to katie and orbee to come

forward so they could join the band

the crowd of people made a path and dad

katie and orbee

squeezed through to the front

when they got up close katie and orbee

suddenly felt a little shy

but dad noted that it was all right

orbeez stood behind katie it seemed

there were a lot of people looking right

at him

then the band played a bouncy kind of

song and orbee couldn't help it

his feet just wanted to dance

soon everybody in the crowd including

katie was clapping to the beat

orbee had so much fun he danced and

twirled and left

he was magnificent

one of the buskers gave katie a

tambourine and she made a jingle and

jangle and time to the music

now orbee was dancing all around the

circle and doing some

really fancy moves

at the end of the song the crowd clapped

then the girl asked orbee to take a bow

too

or returned and looked at all the people

i have to say that he had almost

forgotten about them because

he was really enjoying the music the

crowd was looking at him and began

clapping again or he bowed to everybody

with a very low bound

then dad held out a big coin

as the band started the next song orbee

danced right up and

popped the coin into the guitar case the

musicians gave him

great big smiles katie and orbee

loved the buskers they had a great time

at the toy store too

but when they met mom after her meeting

it was the buskers katie and orbee told

her about

with great delight

perhaps one day when you go into the

city you'll see some buskers too

maybe you'll have a small coin to put in

their guitar cases

that way they'll know that you like

their music and i'm
