05x05 - Hot Fudge Sundaes / The Badminton Game / The Fuse

it had been a different day at grand and

granddad's

katie discovered that an old apartment

had really high ceiling

orbee found out that if you wish to

sleep in the closet

you might need a chair to reach the

clothing bar

and they both learned that highly

polished wood floors

make for great socks lighting fun

when katie woke up in the morning she

found the bed of grannies was so high

off the ground that she had to

jump to get down she and orbee tiptoed

down the hall

they found dad sitting on the couch

looking out the window

katie and orbee climbed up beside him

dad put his arms around the two friends

and

looked at the apartment he told him that

this was where he grew up

he was a little boy here and he had been

thinking about that

it was hard to imagine dad as a little

boy but they tried

he was thinking of the fun things that

he used to do

katie and orbee wanted to know what they

were

dad smiled and asked them to follow him

in the bathroom they found a gigantic

old tub

it even had feet he told them that when

he was little

he used to swim in the bathtub and it

wasn't hard for the friends to imagine

what fun that would be

then he showed them his favorite hiding

place he

opened up the broom closet and pulled at

the wall

and a little piece of wall move behind

it was a little space

dad told katie and orbee it was actually

for hiding

valuable things but he used to use it

all the time

the friends knew that dad couldn't fit

in that hiding place anymore

then dad took them to the banister he

used to climb on the banister at the

landing and slide

all the way down he told them most

apartments don't have two floors but

sometimes

the ones at the top of the buildings do

[Music]

as they walk back to the couch dad told

them that he had all kinds of very

happy memories of growing up in the big

city it was

quite different from their neighborhood

back home he told them that he would

take them for a walk and show them

then he added that he would introduce

them to his most

delicious childhood memory ever

katie and orbee couldn't wait after

lunch they walked

down the busy downtown streets they

passed by a huge

pet store that had a dog house in it

that was so big dad said there was room

for a car

they passed a dress store and one that

sold all kinds of

electronic machines and games

dad said he spent a lot of time looking

in that store window when he was younger

wishing for something called a

transistor radio

of course he said that was before cds

and cassette recorders were invented

orbee wanted to know if the transistor

radio was dad's most delicious

childhood memory but dad chuckled and

just said

follow me and off they hurried

they passed stores that sold fruits and

flowers and

some that sold shoes there was even a

bookstore where dad used to buy his

books when he was a little boy

even though he tried very hard orbeez

still could not

really imagine dad as a little boy

it was even harder for the two friends

to imagine what the most delicious treat

might be

but i have to say they had fun trying

next dad told them that they were going

to have what granddad used to call

a squeeze picture a squeeze picture is

taken in a

little tiny booth that has a camera that

takes a photograph of you

there wasn't very much room inside and

orbee couldn't see a camera anywhere

that said that when the little light was

green they all had to

squeeze together to get their faces into

the photo well

there were shrieks and giggles coming

out of the booth

a whole lot of flashes too and when the

photos were finally ready

they came out in a long strip dad and

katie and orbee looked at them and

laughed about each one they looked

really funny

dad checked his watch it was definitely

time for his most

delicious childhood treat katie and

orbee were bursting with curiosity

was it jelly beans or hot dogs or

or cake dad told them they weren't even

close but they would find out soon

enough soon they came to a building with

two gold poles at the front

dad looked at it and katie and orbee

looked up at it too dad grinned and

he told them that it hadn't changed at

all

he opened the tall doors and katie and

orbee scooted

in it was an old-fashioned ice cream

parlor i screamed that two friends said

and tooted

the parlor had high ceilings and big

booths to sit

in the giant menus were taller than

orbeez and the smell

was yummy but dad whispered that it

wasn't just ice cream

katie and orbee just couldn't wait the

owner

mr minsky came right over to them and

gave dad a

big hug he was thrilled to meet katie

and orbee and he asked

all about mum he told katie and orbee

that he had known dad

ever since he was six he sat them down

at dad's favorite place and

asked dad if he wanted the usual dad

told him

oh yes

mr minsky went to make it and dad turned

to katie and orbee and he told them

this was going to be the absolute treat

of treats

soon they discovered what dad's most

delicious childhood treat was

it was three enormous hot fudge sundaes

with piles of whipped cream on top

dad said are you ready for the best

thing that you've ever tasted and

the two friends nodded that they were

orbee was so excited that he could

barely hold on to his spoon and

get into that ice cream

[Music]

mr minsky told them to enjoy and

enjoy they did they each scooped up a

big spoonful

as they put their spoons into their

mouths they all went

[Music]

the sundays were warm cold chocolaty and

vanilla and almost

chewy they were absolutely delicious

dad told them that these were the best

hot fudge sundaes on earth

and nobody had to tell katie and orbee

they knew from the first bite

when they were all done they thanked mr

minsky and walked back to granny and

granddad's apartment

at the apartment mom asked them what

they had liked the best katie and orbee

and dad

looked at each other and you know they

all said

exactly the same thing at the same time

hot fudge sundaes then

everybody laughed and laughed oh and a

few days later

everybody went to mr minsky's to make

sure that they were right

this time the whole family agreed that

having a hot fudge sundae

was one of the very best things to do in

the big city

and if you ever visit the place where

your parents grew up

i bet you'll discover some of the

wonderful things that they used to do

when they were children too

just like katie and orbee did

did you know cartoons are made up of

hundreds of pictures

when an artist draws a cartoon of a man

walking he does a whole bunch of

drawings

each picture is slightly different and

when the pages are flipped

the cartoon looks like it's moving you

can make your own cartoon

by drawing similar pictures and flipping

them back and forth

[Music]

it had been

a bit of a boring day at the cottage

katie discovered that the puzzle gets

too easy after you've done it seven

times

orbee learned that if you make a long

line of cars on the porch

it's a lot of work to move them and they

both realize that some days

just need to be different

[Music]

katie and orbee were lying on their

backs counting the lines on the ceiling

then orbeez spotted the badminton

rackets hanging on the wall of the

playroom

now i should tell you that neither one

of them knew how to play badminton but

when orbee tooted that

he thought it would be fun to try katie

agreed

katie zipped up onto a chair and got

down two rackets

orbee popped open the can of birdies and

pulled out one

the two friends looked at each other

they had all they needed

to play a great game of badminton

outside kitty looked at the net it was

high

orbee told her that was no problem he

could hit the birdie up really high and

he did and with a loud

whack the birdie shot straight up into

the air

almost out of sight

katie clapped her hand she was very

impressed

she held her racket up to hit it back

when it came down

but the birdie spiraled down and flopped

onto the ground at orbeez feet

no one was more surprised than orbee

katie he giggled she told orbee

badminton was going to be fun

orbee picked up the birdie to try again

this time

orbeez swung the racquet to give it a

good smack and it plopped to the ground

without going anywhere he had missed it

katie and orbee both laughed at this

the next time orbeez swung he hit it

and it shot forward unfortunately

it scooted under the net and hit katie

in the knee

it didn't hurt though katie tried to hit

it back but it fell to the ground

[Music]

orbee told her that he was sure it had

to go over the net

so that didn't count katie got ready to

send the birdie over the net to orbee so

he could hit it back to her

she swung her racquet way back but when

she swung forward

it hit the ground and the birdie just

plopped on the grass

katie teddy was surprised

orbee giggled at her and he told her

badminton wasn't that easy

after all katie had a great idea as she

picked up the birdie

this time she would start with the

birdie on the racket

and flip it up on the other side of the

net

orbee got ready for katie's big hit

he wiggled his hips and crouched down a

bit

and he made katie laugh

he held his racquet up high sure that if

it came to his side

he would be ready to hit it back

well with the birdie sitting on her

racquet katie lowered it a bit to build

up a good swing

then with all of her might she flung the

birdie up in the air

orbee waited and watched

and the birdie disappeared

it was nowhere to be found

[Music]

orbee looked all around him and katie

looked all around her

it wasn't on the ground katie turned

around

then she started to laugh so hard she

fell down

orbee raced under the net to see what

was so funny and

katie pointed to a bush behind her

there it was sitting on the bush nowhere

near where katie had been aiming

the two friends looked at each other

orbee explained that the birdie was

supposed to go back and forth

over the net and they were supposed to

take turns hitting him

katie put the racquet up to her face and

giggled through

it she knew that

[Music]

at that moment there was a tapping at

the window

dad was waving a racket anthem asking if

he could play

the two friends cheered now the game was

going to be

even more fun and it was

katie and orbee played on one side of

the net and dad played on the other

dad hid it to one of them and it was

their job to hit it back

the first time dad hit it katie was so

surprised because the birdie seemed to

drift right down almost onto her racket

she swung at it but again it went behind

her

dad told her not to scoop it but to give

it a good tap with her racket

he sent it over to her again and this

time katie bopped it

the birdie lifted up and headed back to

the head unfortunately the net stopped

it from going all the way over

dad cheered and shouted now she was

doing it the right way

he did a little dance and spun in a

circle

he was so proud of her katie felt

terrific

and orbee felt like seeing if he could

do it

dad reminded him to give it a good tap

with his record

and oh i have to say that orbee was

really ready

when the birdie drifted down orbeez tap

was perfect

up and over the net it went dad did some

jumping and waving up his racket ending

up

all twisted because orbeez was too hard

and it had

gone out of bounds dad told him it was

terrific

katie hugged orbee she was so proud of

him

and soon mom tapped on the window

holding up a racquet

dad wasn't sure they should let her play

because she was really good but

katie and orbeez shouted and cheered

they played girls against the boys there

was a great deal of laughing and

shouting and

missing the birdie but every now and

then the birdie would go flying back

over the net the whole family had fun

and they didn't stop until supper time

later as katie and orbee were putting

the equipment away

they decided it would be fun to play

again tomorrow

mom and dad in the kitchen thought the

same thing in fact they played badminton

several times before the summer ended

and i have to tell you it wasn't long

before katie was very good at

getting the birdie up high and over the

net

and it wasn't long before orbee was very

good at returning birdies that stayed

inside the boundaries

and do you know that if you'd been there

that summer

you'd have been getting better and

better at badminton too

practice just has a way of doing that

and

i happen to know that with a little

practice

you can be good at a lot

of things

did you know having your hair cut

doesn't hurt it can be a great adventure

you can have your hair washed cut and

styled

any way you like

i just don't think mom will like the

pink stripes

it had been a busy day

katie discovered that when the sun sets

it paints the trees in the backyard

orange orbee found out that sometimes

the moon comes up

before the sun has finished its day

and they both learned that having an

outdoor barbecue with garden candles

makes the backyard a magical mysterious

place

dad had just finished a made to order

story about the

black and yellow snorting hippopotamus

katie

and orbee laughed so hard that mom

peeked in to see if they were okay

orbeez snorted like the hippo and

everybody broke into laughter

mom told him that because ye ping's

parents were coming over to watson

movies that night

they could read for a few extra minutes

both katie and orbee loved books so they

grabbed their favorites

the doorbell rang mom blew good night

kisses and hurried down the stairs

dad kissed katie and orbee and walked

like the silly hippo

all the way out of the room katie and

orbee opened their books

orbee whispered that he wondered if it

was a movie about the snorting hippo

well katie couldn't help but she broke

out into laughter

orbee laughed too and i have to say that

it took a while for them to stop

every time they started slowing down

orbee would

start like the hippo would start again

katie's had up in her bed and asked

orbee to please stop snorting because

her side was aching from laughing so

much

orbee told her he would only do it one

more time and was revving up for a big

snort

when all of a sudden the lights went out

all the lights on the top floor of their

house were suddenly

gone for a moment

either kitty or or be moved then

together they called for mom

and they waited quietly for her to call

back but all they could hear was

the movie and everyone laughing

katie and orbee called again but still

no answer

then they called for dad but it was

pretty obvious that they couldn't be

heard over the sound of the movie

katie who could feel very afraid in the

dark

started to whimper just a bit orbee slid

off his hangers

when the hangers clanked together in the

closet katie was sure it was something

spooky

orbee told her it was the hangers

kitty tried hard not to be afraid but

the thing about afraid was that

sometimes even if you didn't want to

feel it the feeling came anyway

the room was so dark katie couldn't see

orbee and he couldn't see her but i'm

very proud to tell you that

even though orbee was afraid he

pretended to be brave

he could tell katie needed someone to be

brave for her

and he was doing it well until he

tripped over

a racing car and fell onto a squeaky toy

again katie was sure it was something

spooky

tears of fear began to roll down her

cheeks

or be crawled over to her bed burbling

that

it was just him he even added

a hippo snort to make her laugh and for

a second

katie did laugh but then in the dark she

felt something tugging on her

blanket she jumped up on her pillow and

called dad again

orbee tooted that it was only him he was

at the foot of her bed

now orbee felt afraid but but he knew

katie was more afraid than he was so

he told katie they'd play a game of

follow the leader

katie thought it was too dark but orbee

told her if she put her hands on his

shoulders

the dark wouldn't matter so much

together they headed for the door

just then there was a huge noise

it sounded like the earth was opening up

and

katie and orbee were going to disappear

right into it

then they heard all kinds of laughter

from downstairs

or be tooted that it was only the movie

katie sniffed as the two friends inched

forward

she wondered why mom and dad didn't race

up to help them

orbee stopped and hugged katie he

burbled very softly

but they couldn't hear their call they

didn't know what had happened

then he told katie to hang on again and

orbee burbled that her job was to relax

and have fun

his was to worry all she had to do was

follow him and they'd be fine he was

going to get them downstairs to mom and

dad

katie told orbee he was very brave orbee

wasn't brave at all but he was

pretending for his very best friend

when they finally got to the door and

opened it they saw the hall light wasn't

working either

katie gasped but orbee could hear that

the movie was a bit louder and he knew

that they were going to make it down to

mom and dad

then katie pointed out an interesting

thing

she showed orbee how the moon was trying

to help them

the moonlight was streaming through the

window

over the chest and lighting up the hall

now they could see the stairs

downstairs it was dark flashes of light

from the movie showed katie and orbee

where they had to go

as they tiptoed to the top of the stairs

the sound of the movie suddenly got

very quiet katie shouted for mom and dad

orbee tooted with her and in seconds mom

and dad and yi ping's parents were all

looking up at them

from the bottom of the stairs mama asked

what was wrong and dad asked

why it was so dark upstairs then at the

same moment

all the adults said a fuse

katie and orbee didn't know what that

was and looked behind them

everyone else except mom and yi ping's

mom

raced toward the basement mom made some

hot milk

and as they sipped it katie told her how

brave orbee was

mom was very proud indeed orbee

confessed that

in fact he was afraid too

but he pretended to be brave for katie

mom told orbee that that was exactly

what brave was

dad and ye ping's father came up the

stairs dad told katie and orbee

the lights were working again because

they'd fixed the fuse

a fuse was something the lights needed

to keep working

well soon the two friends were happily

asleep

the next day dad bought a sun-powered

flashlight

and placed it in their window if the

lights ever went out again

they would have a flashlight right in

their room

and you know the next time the lights

went out both katie and orbee were brave

and used their flashlight to find mom

and dad

i hope if you ever end up in the dark

you'll be able to pretend to be brave

just like orbee i happen to know that if

you do

you'll be amazing at it
