05x01 - Katie's Paper Flower / The Car Wash / Just Doing My Job

it had been a day of doing

all by yourself thing katie

learned that being alone helps stories

happen in her head

orbee found out that you don't have to

ask anyone if they want to make clay

dinosaurs when you play by yourself

and they both discovered that even when

you're doing things on your own

you still love your best friend very

much

[Music]

orbee was out on the walkway baking his

clay dinosaurs in the september sun

in her bedroom katie spied some bright

colored tissue paper at the top of her

closet

she dragged a chair over to it and stood

on her tippy toes

with a grunt and a stretch and a grab

she managed to pull the roll of paper

down

there were turquoise orange yellow and

bright green sheets they were the most

beautiful colors she had ever seen

as the tissue paper found out in katie's

hand

she had a wonderful idea she would make

a tissue paper flower it would be the

prettiest one in the world

outside on the steps mom told orbee she

was sorry to see the summer end

she'd miss the flowers up in her bedroom

katie was working hard on her project

she used a pipe cleaner for the stem

and twisted some beautiful leaves around

it

then at the top she made a fabulous

turquoise and orange and yellow flower

the big fat petals reached way out and

then got

smaller toward the center katie looked

at it from the top

she looked at it from the bottom she

spun it around in her hand

and looked at all sides katie

the flower was the very most perfect

thing

she'd ever made she was absolutely

delighted she hurried down the stairs

to show orbi mom and dad they wouldn't

believe how beautiful it was

dad was at the bottom of the stairs

looking at some mail katie hid the

flower behind her back and

asked dad to guess what she had

dad guessed an alligator that had lost

his tooth

and then he gets a flying hippo that had

bumped his nose

katie giggled when katie pulled out the

flower

dad gasped it was fabulous

he told katie it was a masterpiece and

they should keep it forever

katie smiled it felt grand to have made

something that looks so perfect

dad flung open the door with a great

tata

and mom and orbee turned to see what was

up katie stepped out and

held out her flower for all to see

[Music]

orbee was so impressed with katie's work

but he did

did three backflips tooting all the way

mom thought it was so perfect she

couldn't say anything for a moment

and then she said oh

katie that was it

katie could tell it was a good oh katie

and she was happy it felt positively

amazing

to have made such a beautiful thing mom

told katie how she was feeling about the

real flowers in her garden

now that summer was ending now they

would have the most

beautiful flower in the whole world with

them all winter

katie looked at her mom and decided an

astonishing thing she would give the

paper flower

to her mom well i probably don't have to

tell you that

mom was thrilled and joyfully took the

power from katie's hand

it was clear that she would have to be

very careful with it

[Music]

orbee asked katie to come down and see

his dinosaurs

katie hurried down the steps to admire

them mom carefully placed the flower on

the edge of the porch and went to get a

drink

katie really liked orbeez brontosaurus

so orbee ran up to get his picture book

to show her what a good job he'd done in

drawing it

kitty lay down flatter not tell me to

take a closer look

and that was when it happened

the wind lifted the flower up into the

air

across the bushes at the front of the

house and up

up up into the sky orbee peeked out the

window to see how neat his dinosaur

looked from upstairs

and he was very surprised to see the

paper flower twirl by

he raced out of the porch and looked to

see if he'd imagined it but he hadn't

the flower was gone

mom and dad looked for it everywhere but

i have to tell you

even though it's really sad katie's

fabulous flower was gone

katie cried orbee gave her a big hug

mom felt bad she hadn't realized that

the wind was strong enough to

pick up the flowers she crouched down

and told katie how sorry she was

mom told her that had been perfect and

she would

never forget it this didn't really make

katie feel better she felt she could

never make another one like it

mom hugged katie a kitty felt so upset

she pushed away from mom's arms and ran

upstairs to her bedroom

everybody looked at each other flower

was gone

and there was nothing that they could do

about it

orbee tried to make her another one but

it wasn't the same

mom cooked one of her favorite treats

for supper but

katie didn't feel like eating dad walked

around the neighborhood to see if the

flower had fallen

anywhere nearby but it hadn't

everybody in the whole house felt bad

that night as mom was kissing her sad

little katie goodnight

she had a thought she told katie that a

good thing about her flower

blowing all over the city was that a lot

of people would get to admire it

maybe the flower had sailed down and

cheered up another little girl who was

sad

kitty thought about this and she told me

maybe then it blew to another mummy who

was

also sorry to see the summer flowers die

[Music]

or be burbled from the closet that maybe

a little boy had discovered it

blowing in the air and caught it

[Music]

dad smiled and said that perhaps

the little boy knew how special the

flower was

maybe he gave it to his best friend to

make her happy again

katie sat up in her bed her flower was

gone

but it had created a whole story all by

itself

katie asked mom and dad if they'd write

the flower story down

and they did the next morning

katie drew a picture of her flower at

the bottom of the story

to this very day katie still has her

flower story

it makes her happy to think that the

little tissue paper flower

had an adventure of its own it's hard to

find something happy about such a sad

thing

but katie did it and i'm sure

that when you have a little sad thing

happen

you'll find something that can make you

feel better

too after all you

are very clever

children in other countries play lots of

different kinds of games

children in mexico hit a pinata in

africa there's a bead game called

mancala

just imagine trying to remember all the

rules of all the games

all over the world that could make your

head spin like a top

[Music]

it had been a fun day so far

katie learned that if you look at a page

from one story and then a page from

another

you can make up a really crazy story of

your own

orbee discovered that chance was very

good at catching a dangling string

but not so good at pick up sticks and

they both learned that

all things fall down nothing stays up

for long

at lunch dad said he wanted to wash the

car that afternoon

teddy and orbee grimm this could be the

beginning of an adventure

dad's wiggling eyebrows told him that

they were right

after a yummy lunch katie orbee and dad

jumped into the car and drove off

the two friends strained at their seat

belts to see what this is going to be

about

they saw a long low building with dark

windows on the side it was

very mysterious because there were cars

driving at one end of the building

and different cars driving out the other

that said the car wash was the home of

the tickle toe monster

he warned them to tuck up their toes and

get ready

katie and harvey did and bounced

excitedly in their seat

dad joined the line of dirty cars

waiting to go in

soon a man came by and dad rolled down

the window

the man said he would direct dad in but

not to drive out at the other end

before the light there turned green

dad turned around with a funny face to

his two friends and

told them they weren't safe from the

tickle toe monster until they saw the

green light

katie and orbee giggle soon they were at

the head of the line where the car wash

man

motioned for dad to turn the steering

wheel a certain way

dad took his hands off the steering

wheel and the car

jolted and jerked forward ah he's

goddess he hollered

it was just like the rides at the

amusement park you can feel the car

being pulled along

and into the car wash they went laughing

all the way

a storm of white bubbly water greeted

them

it pounded the car from little spray

jets everywhere was very loud

dad called over the noise that the soapy

stuff was the drool of the tickle toe

monster

and to watch out he was coming

katie and orbee tucked their toes up

again and giggled with glee

through the soap on the windshield they

could see what looked like flat blue

octopus arms waving from side to side as

they approached the car

dad warned them that these were the

ticklers and to hold on and they did

the ticklers wiggled their way up over

the hood and then with a slap

and a squash they were on the windshield

suddenly it was dark in the car

dad was being totally silly he told them

he could feel

a tickle starting and at the same time

two little towers of blue octopus arms

beside the car

started to swirl and car rocked from

side to side

as the swirl of cloth strips slapped the

car

as the front octopus moved up and over

the car they could hear it on the roof

ah he's got me dad pretended in his

squeaky voice kitty and oily just

laughed

and then dad started to sink down in his

seat

orbee bugled that the monster had got

him too he started to sink also

when katie had to wipe tears from her

eyes she was laughing so much

at that moment the slapping sounds

disappeared and the car stopped rocking

but then another rainstorm

splashed all over the car as it was

tugged along

dad told orbee it was his drool and

katie told dad

that was gross then the rainstorm

ended and another spray storm started

dad told them it was the wax and if it

touched them

they would belong to the monster forever

katie and morphy left because the wax

was

outside the car silly dad

both katie and orbeez strain forward in

this season to see what might be coming

after the wax

in a second they saw more ticklers

these ones were flat red octopus arms

waving like seaweed

dad groaned at the monster not to use

his red ticklers

but they came on anyway

dad warned katie and orbee that these

were the worst ones

this time everybody pretended that they

were being tickled by the monster and

they all sank down in their seats

the red swaying claws wiggled their way

up the car

and then onto the windshield and it was

dark again

and then the car rocked as the two

little towers of swirling cloths

slapped away at the sides when the car

chugged through another spray of water

hit it

this was the biggest spray yet it

pounded down and they couldn't see out

the windows at all

orbee tooted and katie left me

both clapped their hands and dad

whispered

that he thought the monster was trying

to swallow them all

and that they should take up as much

space as they could so they'd be too big

and everyone reached out in all

directions

and then as quickly as it started the

rain stopped

and the two friends could see metal

vents above the car

there was a huge whooshing noise in the

car

shuttered as blast of air hidden

the air was blowing so hard it chased

raindrops up the windshield instead of

down

dad waved his arms in the air and told

the friends that the monster was now

trying to

blow them away with his really stinky

breath

and they waved their arms and katie held

her nose

look tooted orbee the wind blast had

died down and he could see

a blue rubber ball hanging on a string

in front of them

is it going to hit us he burpled dad

pressed back in his seat saying that

the blue ball would bump them if they

didn't lean back

the ball did come right up to the car

and then it lifted off quietly

who said dad whew repeated katie and

orbee

katie spotted a yellow light at the end

dad told her

they needed green to be safe and in a

blink

the yellow light turned off and the

green light came on

there was all kinds of whistling and

cheering inside the car

dad took hold of the steering wheel and

drove the clean shiny car

out into the sunshine katie and orbee

loved going to the car wash with dad and

they always played the tickle toe

monster game

maybe one day if you go to the car wash

you'll play the same game too

it's going to make you laugh i

guarantee you

did you know lots of grown-ups wear

helmets for their jobs

firefighters football players soldiers

and astronauts do helmets keep your head

safe

and look pretty cool you'll look good in

one too

you just might want to take it off when

you go to bed though

it had been a crazy day

katie discovered that when mom was to be

somewhere early in the morning

it's the perfect day for cereal

or we found out that when dad has a lot

of work to do on a project

not a good time to ask about the

position of the stars

[Music]

and they both learned that having a jazz

band in the living room

is not a good idea when dad has to

concentrate

dad asked katie and orbee to put all the

instruments away

he needed quiet and once they did the

house was quiet

for a little while but then orbee

decided to be

a very quiet tickle monster he did

tickle katie very quietly

but he shrieked and laughed so loud that

dad walked into the room

dad told them that he loved them very

much but he really

desperately needed quiet in the house to

finish his project on time

katie and orbee looked at each other

they thought they were being quiet

dad said they were being wonderful but

the laughing and the shrieking was

interfering with his concentration

he explained that mom perhaps was more

used to the noise but

he had to do his project his own way and

to do that

he needed a little less noise

katie and orbee could see the problem

katie immediately came up

with a brilliant idea they would be

quiet

up in her bedroom with the door closed

dad gave both of them a hug and he

really appreciated their help

well the two friends tiptoed all the way

up the stairs and into katie's room

[Music]

they closed the door ever so quietly

and looked at each other

[Music]

what could they play in her room that

would be quiet

so that dad wouldn't hear them or be

suggested cards

so they played three games of old maid

when they were tired of that katie

thought they should draw pictures

[Music]

they got out the crayons markers pencils

and lots of pads with colored paper and

they

both sat down to work right away nobody

noticed when orbeez foot kicked the old

made cards and

spread them all over the floor

they worked so hard on their pictures

that no one noticed that the markers had

rolled all over the floor too

soon orbee thought of another fun game

bed spread shapes they could crawl under

katie's bed spread

and make shapes katie loved the idea

to lift the bed spread up they had to

throw katie's stuffies on the floor

they landed in several flops all over

the crayons and markers and papers

orbee made the first shape under the

blanket he was on his hands and knees

and

he lifted his head up high and stuck one

leg up

this really really looks silly and katie

laughed

quietly of course then it was katie's

turn

she stood up under the blanket pulled

one side of the blanket in and crouched

over into a little ball

she looked like a snail or be tooted

[Music]

next orbee raised both his hands high in

the air

and when they got tired of making shapes

katie thought

puzzles sounded like fun orbee agreed

they had to push aside some of the

markers and cards and drawings

to make a nice flat space for their

puzzles

they were so eager to have some quiet

fun that they didn't pay

any attention to the fact that slowly

but surely katie's room was getting

messier and messier and messier

by the time dad was finished all his

work and was ready to start dinner

the two friends had also built a block

gas station

and a huge traffic jam with all the cars

and

looked at several picture books they had

done almost

every single thing they could think of

that they could do quietly

just as they were starting to feel like

being noisy dad opened the door

he had a great big smile on his face and

he announced that everyone could be

noisy again

katie and hobie cheered they raced over

to bed

gave him a big hug for working so hard

dad hugged them back

but that was when he noticed that the

room

was a terrible mess katie and orbee

turned to see what dad was looking at

and for the first time they noticed it

too

katie could see by his face that he was

a little disappointed

he asked them if they would mind tidying

up because

he was tired and still had to make

supper

katie turned dad around and told him

that they would in no time flat

when he closed the door all kinds of

strange noises and thumping and bumping

came out of the room downstairs in the

kitchen dad wondered

how all that thumping and bumping could

possibly mean the room was getting

tidied

in the bedroom katie was pretending to

be a swooping screeching hawk

she would swoop down and pick up a block

in her talons

and then drop it on the shelf orbee was

a vacuum cleaner

and pushed all the puzzle pieces and the

cards to the right box

he made a really loud vacuum cleaner

noise

of course all this was mixed with a

whole lot of giggling and laughing

in the kitchen dad looked up at the

ceiling he had asked katie and orbee to

clean up

and now it sounded like they were making

more of a mess

once dinner was in the oven he climbed

back up the stairs to investigate

[Music]

he knocked on the door but a loud

wearing noise from orbee

made it impossible for anyone to hear

so dad opened the door he began to say

that

he'd ask the two friends to tidy up and

he'd really like them to get started

and then he stopped in the middle of his

sentence

the vacuum cleaner was putting the last

puzzle box on the shelf

as the screeching hawk tidied up the

last corner of the bedspread

bad couldn't believe his eyes dad told

them that he'd come to tell them to

please start tidying up katie left

he was too late

as they all headed downstairs dad said

that he hadn't expected to see a clean

room when he opened the door

katie threw her arms around him and got

a piggy back ride

all the way to the bottom she laughed

and told him

that they were just doing their job

their own way

dad had to agree they really were

and i'm sure you have fun ways of

getting your jobs done too and i'll just

bet

they're amazing just
