04x09 - Spider / Cowboy Boots / Footprints

it was a summery kind of cottage day

katie discovered that if you put a water

hose on a bucket it all doesn't

necessarily stay on the bucket

or be discovered that if you're in the

wading pool and make a huge tidal wave

a lot of things are going to sink and

they both found out that when you're wet

and you get splashed

it's wet

[Music]

but when you're dry and you get splashed

it's freezing

the day was perfect for playing outside

katie and orbee were lathered in

sunscreen and dad had

jabbed a huge umbrella on one side of

the wading pool so they could play in

the sun

and in the shade dad sat on a nearby

lawn chair watering the garden and

watching the two friends

or be discovered that you could actually

make shadows on the umbrella

and did a silly show for katie and then

katie got into the pool holding a

duck-shaped ring around her tummy and

did a

funny splash dance orbee clapped his

hands and

verbal that katie was the best splash

dancer orbee had ever seen

and they laughed and raced around the

yard being seaplanes coming in for a

splash landing

and when they got to the pool they leapt

in and stood across the slippery bottom

as they both sat drenched in the pool

orbee's tummy made a

loud grumble katie giggled

orbee tooted that ollie running and

splashing and dancing was making his

tummy kind of hungry

once he said it katie realized her tummy

was kind of hungry too

[Music]

dad was still watering the garden and

katie and obi hurried over to him

they told him that their tummies were

feeling very hungry

and dad wasn't surprised it was

lunchtime

almost as soon as he said it mom came

out the screen door with a big tray

there were bright-colored glasses filled

with juice and a whole pile of

sandwiches

[Music]

mom spread a towel under the umbrella

and placed katie and orbee sandwiches on

it

she sat there juice glass on the side of

the pool

the two friends loved having a private

picnic under the big umbrella

and began to munch away

kenny was telling orbee all about how

much fun it would be to bring out the

great big bubble dipper and make giant

bubbles

and they could each take turns popping

the bubbles as they came out

or be agreed it would be great fun

and as he did katie picked up her cheese

sandwich she was about to put it in her

mouth for a big bite

when orbee tooted for her to stop

katie was looking at orbee and not in a

sandwich which was why

she didn't see a spider looking

right into her open mouth he was

sitting on the sandwich

well katie screamed and threw her

sandwich

up in the air mom and dad came running

and when orbee told him about the spider

mom smiled dad asked if the spider ate

much of the sandwich

a katie did not even smile she

she was up on her feet and anxious to

run inside and hide she didn't want that

ugly spider to come near her again

[Music]

orbee found the spider on the ground and

was about to stamp on it when

dad asked him not to that picked up the

spider

and it hurried up his hand to get away

from the big pink monster

dad held the spider away from katie but

he held it still so

she could see it he agreed that it was

ugly

but he explained that the spider needed

all those legs to help spin his web

[Music]

katie told dad she didn't like spiders

explained that there were all kinds of

spiders

[Music]

he said that while they could squish it

he would much rather that they protected

it because

it was protecting them

[Music]

both katie and orbee looked at each

other they wanted to know what the

spider was protecting them from

my dad asked if either katie or orbee

knew what spot is like for lunch

katie said cheese sandwiches

the dad shook his head he told them

spiders don't actually eat

people food they eat bugs katie grimaced

but dad continued one thing they do for

us is keep the bug population

under control birds and spiders

are big helpers

katie looked at the spider differently

she told dad that he was still ugly

but she didn't want him to k*ll it

especially if the spider was working so

hard

dad told her that he would be spider

transport the next time they found one

spider transport would find a better

place for them and with that

dad made a truck noise

and pretended to drive the spider to a

better place

he circled back and asked katie and

orbee to get on the truck because

he needed a place that was full of bugs

for the spider to enjoy

so katie and orbee followed dad making

a long truck and they shouted for dad to

head for the flower garden there was zig

zagging

and wrong turns but soon they were there

katie showed dad that there were a lot

of bugs in the garden

[Music]

dad told him this must be the perfect

place

and he held out his hand the spider

liked what he saw

because he began to spin a web from

dad's hand

and spin his way down to the ground as

soon as he landed

he was off dad took both

katie and orbee's hand and thanked them

for being part of the spider rescue team

and

motored over to his sandwich plate he

picked up a piece of his sandwich and

then

motored right back to the picnic under

the umbrella he dropped the pieces of

his sandwich on katie's place

he picked up the pieces she'd thrown and

motored back to his lawn chair

katie and orbee giggled as they munched

on their picnic lunch

[Music]

one thing about dad was he really knew

how to be silly

and from that day on whenever katie and

orbee saw spiders

[Music]

they called dad who would put it in a

jar and carry it out

they would all try to find a better

place for the spider to be happy in

they appreciated the spider's help and

keeping the number of bugs down

[Music]

and do you know that you can help

spiders that get into the wrong place

too

by asking an adult to take them outside

to a place where they'll be much happier

if you do

i know the spider will really appreciate

it

and so will you when there aren't as

many bugs around

did you know

did you know there are some animals who

like to live where it is very very cold

polar bears penguins and muskox

all live in the ice and snow

but i don't think you'll ever see a

camel at the north pole

it had been an exciting day

katie learned that when you wrap a

present the paper doesn't always stay on

or be discovered when you're waiting for

something to start time seems to slow

down

to a crawl and chance found out that

ribbon is a great thing to play with

when you're a pussycat

[Music]

the dining room was full of balloons and

funny hats it was orbeez earth day

katie's family didn't know what day his

birthday was so

they decided to celebrate the day he

came to earth

he was having a family party and

anxiously

looking forward to his presence at

dinner after his planet cake

katie gave orbee her present

was a tape of some of his favorite music

orbee jumped up and kissed katie

thanked her very much

[Music]

dad gave orbee a detective book with a

magnifying glass and a flashlight

orbee couldn't believe it he raced

around and hugged dad tight and said

thank you

then it was mom's turn she lifted

a big box onto the table it had shiny

paper

and a bright ribbon he pulled the ribbon

and stood on the chair

to pull all the paper off

[Music]

under the paper was a shoe box

orbee's heart sank low in his chest he

didn't really wear shoes

had mom forgotten he knew he had to be

polite so he made a smile on his face

then he lifted off the lid and pulled

back the tissue papers

and there in the box lay the most

amazing pair of cowboy boots

he buckled and flipped right out of his

chair and

he cartwheeled around to mom and landed

right in her lap

he gave her a terrific smooch on the

cheek to say

thanks for the best present in the whole

world

[Music]

katie couldn't help the giggle because

he knew orbee was going to love the

cowboy boots

and with his zip orbee was back at his

place

tissue paper flying everywhere and he

pulled the boots out as

happy as you could imagine they were

perfect

that evening the friends played cowboys

for hours

orbee felt like a real cowboy in his

boots

later when they were going to bed mom

whispered that

cowboys took their boots off when they

slept orbee wanted to keep them on

mom kissed orbee and turned out the

light

she knew that if he was uncomfortable he

would take the boots off

the next morning orbee was up bright and

early he clumped down the stairs to

breakfast

with his boots still on

as he scooped up his cereal he told

katie that

he wanted to play cowboys again and

kitty agreed

they played cowboys and rode imaginary

horses in the backyard

and he joined in katie rescued andy who

was almost squished by a

wild stampede of horses while orbee

chased the horses away then orbee rode a

bucking bronco and tried to tame it

they all had fun but i have to say that

by the middle of the afternoon

katie wondered if maybe they could play

something else

orbee looked at her in surprise

he was a cowboy that was what he wanted

to play

katie shook her head and went inside to

paint a picture of a horse

[Applause]

orbee loved his boots so much that for

three days

he didn't take them off or we found

other friends to play cowboys with

cowboys were all orbee could think of

the next day was hot and sunny and tom

invited the family over for a swim

orbee of course wore his boots

at the pool katie jumped in with glee

[Music]

mom dove off the board tom did some

silly jumps

or we watched from the lawn chair they

were all having fun

and he was hot from head to toe but

if he went into the pool he'd have to

take off his boots

and he was never going to do that

then tom suggested the game of ball in

the pool he brought out a big beach ball

it was

huge and it made katie laugh so hard

because

when it landed near her she could barely

lift it

and it looked like so much fun to orbee

as he sat watching and thinking of the

cool water

he could feel his toes wiggle a bit in

the boots

boots were starting to feel a little hot

orbee looked down at them they were the

best cowboy boots in the world

and he was never going to take them off

when he looked up tom was waving some

diving rings in the air

orbee absolutely loved diving for rings

and

tom threw the rings and orbee got up to

see where they went

katie called to orbee to help her orbee

smiled he

really wanted to but he was never

going to take off his boots thinking of

the boots made him realize

now they were really hot and sweaty his

toes really wanted to feel the

cool water and to kick around in it he

didn't know how but

one of his feet kicked a boot off and

suddenly so did the other

orbee looks at the cowboy boots lying on

the ground

he really wanted to be a cowboy right

now

he he really wanted to be a ring diver

more

he tucked his brand new boots behind the

chair so they wouldn't get wet

and with a leap and a spin orbee turned

into a

pink blur at the bottom of the pool

katie shrieked with joyce or he swooped

up

with four rings in his hand everybody

clapped

[Applause]

orbee loved being a ring diver too he

wondered

if there had ever been a ring diving

cowboy before

he was glad to have the boots off his

toes felt so

light as he kicked in the water

and katie's family was glad they were

off too

[Music]

after that day orbee wore the boots only

when he played cowboys

they were still the best boots in the

world the rest of the time he left them

in his closet

where they waited for him and

orbeez friends had become a bit tired of

playing cowboys

everything was back to normal and do you

know that to this very day

orbee still has that pair of cowboy

boots sitting in his closet

after all they were his very most

favorite thing

and i'm sure you have a very most

favorite thing too

maybe when you grow up if you keep it

you will remember how special it was to

you

just like orbeez

did you know did you know did you know

did you know you can make music shakers

out of things you probably have at home

just take a small plastic container and

add a very little bit of rice or

macaroni

put a lid on it and shake it around

you can play along with your favorite

song or make music of your own

just make sure dad doesn't have a

headache

[Music]

it had been a snowy day

katie knows that when snow falls it

doesn't make a sound

or be discovered that when you walk on

snow in your boots

it crunches under your feet

and they both learned that overnight

snow could change the world to white

katie was in a hurry today she was going

to be

sharisa's special guest at school

cherise had wanted to take orbee too but

her teacher said that orbee would have

to come next time

because they were only allowed one guest

at a time

katie was going to be late if she didn't

hurry orbee found her missing red mitten

and helped her put on her boots

with hugs and kisses katie was out the

front door

and off to school with charisse

orbee looked around the house when katie

was gone the house seemed

empty and a bit lonely

mama asked orbee if he wanted to help

her fold the laundry

but orbee really didn't feel like it dad

wondered if

orbee wanted to help him brush the snow

off the car

and usually orbee would have thought

either of these things was fun

but today he didn't he pulled on his

snow clothes and went out the back door

outside the day was bright with newly

fallen snow

orbee looked around there was nothing

fun to do

and no one fun to do anything with or be

sat there

on the steps feeling very alone he

didn't really like it when katie went

off without him

he had no one to play with and couldn't

think of a friend that he'd like to play

with more than katie

as he sat there orbee didn't notice

anything happening in the backyard

but i have to tell you things were

happening

when dad was finished with the car he

came out to the backyard

and sat down beside orbee and asked him

if he was okay

orbeez leaned his little pink head on

dad's arm

and told him he was lonely

and that was when the fun began dad who

was always so silly he asked orbee

how he could be so lonely when so many

friends were playing with him in the

yard

orbee looked up and scammed the snow no

one was there

dad asked him again and orbee breville

that there wasn't anyone in sight

[Music]

dad looked again and then admitted that

orbee was right

but he explained that he was thinking of

friends

other than children well i'll be had to

think about that for a minute

what other friends were there there was

mrs peret but she certainly wasn't in

the yard

dad smiled at orbee and told him that he

wasn't looking very carefully

orbee looked again and i have to say

that he was getting

a little frustrated with dad no matter

how hard orbee looked

no one was there dad tapped the end

of orbeez nose and gave him a big smile

he took orbeez hand

and the two of them got off the step and

started out into the snowy garden

[Music]

orbee thought that maybe someone was

hiding but dad said no

someone was leaving a trail for him to

follow

at that moment orbee noticed some funny

tracks in the snow

orbeez stared down at the tracks they

looked like

little sticks dad asked orbee to think

of

who could have made those tracks in the

snow

orbee looked at the tracks he knew it

wasn't a person

and probably wasn't an elephant

and just then orbee heard a bird

chirping from a snowy branch of a tree

he looked at the feet on the bird and he

knew right away

that it was a bird that had come to

visit him in the backyard

dad told him he was very clever then he

told orbee

he'd had another visitor in the backyard

that day

or orbee looked at the white snow and

noticed another set of footprints

these were a bit different

they had four feet marks all together

and even though the feet were small

orbee noticed that there was a lot of

distance between

each set of footprints

[Music]

then he saw a squirrel spiraling up

around an old tree and he told dad

that the visitor had been the squirrel

dad clapped his hands and he bowed to

orbee

and orbee laughed right out loud and at

that moment i have to tell you

orbee wasn't lonely anymore

pointed to a third set of footprints

the backyard sure was a busy place when

nobody was in it

[Music]

these ones were a little like the

squirrels but much bigger

and sometimes there were only two prints

together instead of four

orbee had no idea who or what could have

made those prints

he looked and looked around the yard and

saw

nothing dad pointed to the window at the

back of the house

there was no one there but just as

orbeez ready to give up

chance left up and landed on the

windowsill

orbee burbled chance and dad did

the silliest little dance to let orbee

know he was right

and that he was really proud of him

and that afternoon while katie visited

sharisa's school

orbee discovered that he wasn't alone at

all and found bruce the dog's footprints

some mouse tracks and even a funny

people track

on the sidewalk it had two feet

and a little hole beside it dad told him

that these were the tracks of someone

walking with a cane

finally katie came back from charissa's

school with a painting she had made

especially for orbeez

and then she told him of all the things

that she had learned in school

orbee told her all about the tracks in

the snow

katie wanted to see every one of them

and so in a flash the two friends

swooshed outside to the backyard to see

who had visited

orbee told katie which footprint was

whose and

katie hugged her amazing friend

he knew almost everything in the whole

world

and orbee laughed he told her

what he did know was that even though he

had been a bit lonely for katie

he discovered that he wasn't really

alone in the backyard for even a minute

he also discovered that he loved to be

with katie best

but when he couldn't be he could still

have a great time

and this was a very important discovery

so the next time you feel lonely take a

look out at all the creatures in nature

who are sitting and playing

right around you and i hope you'll

remember

that even though sometimes you might

feel lonely

you're never really

alone

you
