she's 13 years old she's deaf and she's

going to teach us about American Sign

Language and we're researching

fascinating facts about deafness this is

did you know that Beethoven was deaf a

deaf composer really yes it says here

that he started losing his hearing when

he was 30 years old and that by the time

he was 47 he was completely deaf was he

still able to compose oh yes most people

think he wrote his best music after he

went deaf i guess he could imagine what

he wanted the musicians to play and then

he wrote it all down how fascinating

are you sure absolutely they don't even

have ears it says so in the encyclopedia

wow it never occurred to me that animals

can be deaf too oh yes and lots of

animals are born deaf or go deaf as they

get older just like people do the things

I learned working on the show and cue

wow i didn't know that Thomas Edison was

deaf too who was Thomas Edison he was

the most famous inventor ever what's an

inventor a person created something new

he invented the light bulb and the

record player the microphone and movies

wow he invented all of those things and

more he was a genius yeah he was really

smart purple's kid and ready to roll

good morning Sandra and good morning

Mindy good morning first of all how did

you become deaf

i was born deaf are any other members of

your family deaf

no just me i I wish there were more deaf

in my family though what's it like

living in a family where you're the only

deaf one

well when we're eating dinner

and everybody's sitting around the table

my sister my mom my dad and they're

talking and having this conversation and

I always feel left out i'm kind of

frustrated because I can't understand

what they're saying i ask my mom "What'd

you just say what' you just say?" and

she says "Oh something whatever was

said." And then we eat is it hard to

learn sign language

yes but I learn fast good for you what's

the difference between sign language and

the manual alphabet

well like this is a sign for sun you can

spell it s u n or you can do the sign

for sun

or earth you can finger spell the word

earth or make a sign for earth can you

explain to us what a tdd is

it's a phone for deaf people it's like a

little typewriter and you put the phone

on it and you start typing

and you see g for go ahead and you put

sk means that you finished your

conversation wow what do you like to do

in your spare time

oh I like to dance i like to do

cheerleading i like to go to the movies

go to uh the mall just like hearing kids

like to do do you have friends that are

hearing

oh yes how do you communicate with them

lips reading lips do you understand them

well

yeah sure i have hearing parents

and I have a lot of hearing friends a

hearing sister hearing dad what do you

want to be when you grow up i want to be

an actress i want to be an actress like

sign language have been used for

hundreds of years by people who can hear

and speak really didn't American Indians

who spoke different languages get

together and create a sign language so

they could talk to each other that's

right Ruby so people all over the world

have been communicating with sign

languages for a very long time cool and

cute we only have time for one more song

today so we've picked one on my favorite
