the parents say they can I'll try to

Lifeguards are really heroic It must be

dangerous for them to go in the rough

waters to try and rescue someone Yeah I

really admire them Me too You know kids

besides rescuing people lifeguards stay

busy helping lost children find their

parents Yeah there's a lot going on at

the beach and some kids wander off and

before they know it they're lost How

scary for them I'm glad the lifeguards

get the kids back to their mommies and

to remember is how important it is to

dress appropriately for the weather So

viewers in the colder parts of the

country please make sure you dress

warmly when you go outside in the cold

Meet the Lifeguard

exploration of the world of safety

continues with a very special guest Nell

Rean is a Los Angeles County lifeguard

who like her co-workers have saved many

lives Wow how neat So let's turn the

studio over to our own Minnie Pale Nell

Rean Thank you Tiffany and Sergio And

thank you Nell for joining us today

Thank you for having me What is a

lifeguard well first of all lifeguard's

your friend Not only do we perform

rescues and help save people on the

beach and keep the safety but if you

ever lose your parents we'll help you

find them What is the red thing that

lifeguards always carry around this is a

rescue can Whenever I leave my tower I

have this with me If I'm in my tower I

have it hanging on there And that's how

the lifeguards around me know that I'm

there and not making a rescue When I

make a rescue I take this apart and I

throw it behind me Why don't you hold it

okay Now I put this over Then I swim out

to my victim and I say "Everything's

going to be fine I'm here to help you."

And then I'll swim them in with you

holding the can and I'll say "Why don't

you kick for me so we can get in

faster?" Okay

And what kind of training do lifeguards

have well most lifeguards swim for most

of their life They start out at a local

pool and maybe become lifeguards

themselves at a pool and then try out

for beach lifeguarding which is usually

an 8-day training program What advice do

you have for kids i would advise kids to

always wear sunscreen Never go in the

water without your parents knowing where

you are And always ask a lifeguard

before you go on the water There might

be special safety concerns at a pool or

at a beach or wherever you're going

swimming And what was your assignment

this summer my assignment this summer

was not only to work on the beach and

help save people's lives but I also was

an instructor for Los Angeles County

Lifeguards the Junior Guard program

there which we teach kids ages 9 to 17

about lifeguarding and beach skills And

who was the biggest person you've ever

rescued the biggest person I ever

rescued was probably over 200 lb He was

on a boogie board and he didn't have any

fins on If you're out on a boogie board

you want to be wearing fins and he let

go of his boogie board and I had to save

him and the boogeie board So it was kind

of difficult Do you like being the

lifeguard i enjoy it very much Well
