about and it's a subject that they're very interested in And we'll be talking about safety too And I'm working in the

or in more grown-up words transportation We'll be looking at lots of different ways to get around like cars boats

trains and planes just to name a few But before we get into all that let's check

Sometimes I wish I wasn't the director I'm always stuck here in the control room I don't get to meet the guests or be out in the studio I thought you like

being director Well most of the time I do but not today This wouldn't have anything to do with your hero Jimmy

About 500 years ago the only way to cross the ocean was in a boat Well that makes sense The Wright brothers didn't

start the airplane age until 1903 So anyway explorers were going back and

forth and cross the ocean in these wooden sailing boats This was before engines were invented And sometimes

explorers boats were full of gold jewels and treasures which led to pirates right

pirates were a bunch of bad guys who would rob from the good guys and steal all their treasure I'm so glad we

Now at last as promised it's question time with Janet Bates and our special guest any car driver Jimmy Basser

Hello Jimmy Thank you very much for joining us Thanks Janet I'm glad to be here In 1992 at the Indianapolis 500 you

set a record for being the fastest rookie qualifier in the history of the race In plain English that means that in

your first Indie race you went faster than any other first timer Right That's right Janet How fast did you go well we

had a fourlap average of 222 mph Wow Well can you give us an idea of how fast that is it's about the the same as

traveling the length of a football field every second Wow How do you stay safe well most importantly is that I wear a

seatelt at all times just like you do in your family car And also I have this crash helmet It's made out of Kevlar as

it's very strong Uh it also has a radio inside that I can talk to my pit crew at

all times during the race Do you ever get worried about how dangerous it is no because I wear my

seatelt at all times and I have a helmet like this to keep me safe It takes my mind off of how dangerous it is Do you

drive fast off the track absolutely not I I mind the speed limit It's safer that

way How old were you when you first got interested in racing i started racing quarter midgets when I was 6 years old

as a kid and I've been interested in ever since Tell us about your car Well

it's a Rainard Ford Cossworth It's a yellow and black number 18 How fast will it go the top speed of the race car is

about 245 mph How big is the engine the engine's uh about the same size as as

the engine in your street car but it has 750 horsepower If you can imagine 750

horses pulling a buggy at the same time That's how strong it is Wow your outfit's really cool What's your uniform

made of it's a It's made out of Nomx It's a fire retardant material so if I get in a fire it won't burn What will
