of a railroad station.

By the turn of the century,

It became a thriving industrial
town, until the railroad closed.

the factories disappeared.

and factories

And gas stations in the town.

They've all closed down.

Narrator: but despite
the town's depressed past,

The four-bedroom house
marks a new beginning.

when you walk in the home,

You enter to almost 40-foot
vaulted ceiling, straight up.

And it's all open.

It was just amazing.

met a few months ago

And instantly hit it off.

Kimberly:
we met on an online dating site,

And as soon as he met me
and the girls,

We just knew it was meant to be
for our family.

But each day, the feeling
that someone is in the house

Kimberly: I was laying the girls
down for a nap --

As soon as I got out of the
room, the door slammed on me.

At first,
I thought it was the girls,

But then I realized that they
were laying down on their bed

they could have done that.

I realized the window was open.

I thought maybe the wind could
have slammed the door shut.

I didn't think too much of it.

I put this dress on her

Kimberly: I heard shylin
talking in the playroom.

Shylin:
you like your doll?

It was like she was talking to
somebody that was sitting there.

Shylin: here, her dress
is so pretty, right?

Kimberly:
but nobody was there.

Kimberly: can I join in?

Jacob won't mind.

Who's jacob?

My new friend.

Where did you meet him?

He was walking
around the house,

So I asked him his name,
and he said his name was jacob.

Narrator:
kimberly is stunned,

And to her horror,
shylin describes the man

and that he was very dirty

And he had dark hair
and he had dark coveralls on.

He wears torn-up
work clothes,

And he also wears boots,
a little bit like daddy.

And he had work boots on
like her daddy's.

so we're friends now.

And we were dead that night.

Narrator: after a thorough
search of the house,

Craig finds no intruder
and nothing missing.

Craig breaks the news
to kimberly.

Hey, hey.

I checked the whole house,
all right?

I checked everything.
There's nobody here.

No, I saw someone,
craig.

Honey, honey, listen.
I did, too.

I checked everything --
everything is locked up tight.

We're safe, all right?

Well, I'm gonna sleep
with the girls tonight

Because I don't want them
to be alone.

Listen, there's nothing

We thought
it was somebody breaking in,

And no alarms went off, and
all the doors were still locked.

Narrator:
to set the family at ease,

Craig changes all the locks.

Kimberly: he just did
what a husband would do --

He figured he works nights, he
didn't want somebody coming in.

Narrator: but for kimberly,
it's still not enough.

Kimberly:
I went from the terrorized
fear stage to the angry stage.

I was mad because I felt like
I was not protecting my kids.

From that moment on, I kept
a more close eye on the girls.

Narrator:
for the next few weeks,

The family tries to focus on
life as usual.

to ignore the activity

And get our life back
to the way it was.

Narrator: spring arrives with

and looked at something

That was
straight in front of us.

I was just completely shocked,
couldn't even get words out.

Shylin was seeing something
that we couldn't.

and begins to wonder

If the shadow of the man they've
been seeing around the house

Is a ghost.

Kimberly: at this point,
I was stressed, very nervous.

I knew something
was going on in the home.

I mean,
when you see stuff moved,

When you see things flipped,
when you hear things,

You know something's going on.

And what else do you say?
It's haunted.

Narrator: fear is now part
of the family's daily routine.

And the newlyweds' relationship
begins to unravel.

What are we gonna do?

We were all very stressed
about what as going on.

Kim and I started fighting,
and that was not like us at all.

About the house, craig.
Something is obviously going on.

Kimberly:
and I told him that this was
more than just unusual things,

That something
was seriously wrong.

He wanted to protect me
and the girls,

And he just didn't know how
to do it.

Craig: she turned around and
asked me why I moved the pan.

I was like,
"I didn't move the pan."

pan started moving by itself.

Narrator: soon after moving
into an iowa farmhouse,

A family of four begins sensing
a stranger is in the house.

But when craig and kimberly go
after the intruder, he vanishes.

Narrator: craig begins to wonder
if the home is haunted.

But there is nothing in its past

To explain the presence
of a ghost.

His grandparents built the house
just a few years ago,

And were the only ones
who ever lived there.

I wanted to know how it could be
happening in a new built house,

When nobody's ever died
in the house.

Narrator: kimberly and craig
decide to research

The history of the property.

Kimberly: so, we went down
to the public library,

And I couldn't find anything
in public records,

So I started talking
to the secretary.

She had to be in her 80s.

Craig: did you find records
on our house?

I'm sorry.
I couldn't find a thing.

You know, we actually don't have
anything before 1950.



The town really didn't have
a records office until then.

But I do know
this property.

You do?
Mm-hmm.

Isn't right off
the highway?

Yeah.
Yeah.

Well, I can remember
when they tore down

That old chemical plant,
what was left of it.

Chemical plant?

Oh, yes.

Kimberly: she told me she lived
in town most of her life,

And she was telling us
about a plant that burned down.

Narrator: it turns out
the chemical plant

Was located
on the very same land

Where their house now stands.

Anyway, that plant brought
so much work to this town.

It was just really sad
when it burned down.

Well,
how did it burn down?

I don't think they ever found
out the cause, really,

But my husband one of the first
firemen that responded.

And three young men
lost their lives in that fire.

[ Coughs ]

Help!

Anybody!

[ Coughs ]

It was a terrible,
terrible accident.

I'm sorry.

I'll hope
you'll be happy there anyway.

This really hit the town hard

Because one was 18 or 19 and
the other one was in his 20s.

She only knew two names -- one
was joshua, and one was jacob.

Hey! Help!

Jacob did this.

Who's jacob?

My new friend.

This was really the moment
for us that it all clicked.

We knew there was a ghost
and that his name was jacob.

We knew this kid was real.

Narrator:
kimberly and craig are horrified

At the way jacob and other
young men met their fate.

Kimberly: we were upset,

And we really didn't know
what to expect with jacob.

We didn't know
if he was trying to contact us

Or if he was trying hurt us.

Narrator: the family
decides to pray for jacob,

He was only 18 years old

we were looking at was jacob.

across the whole room.

I was terrified.

were getting thrown at us.

It was becoming
more and more chaotic.

once she was completely done,
it was like peace in the house.

Every dark, dark room

Seemed to be like three
or four shades lighter.

Like, nothing was there anymore.

Narrator:
kimberly is in disbelief.

Could jacob really be gone?

Days pass,
and life remains tranquil.

Kimberly:
I had the girls come back home.
They slept in their beds.

We were at peace.

I felt like I got my house back.

At that point,
I couldn't handle much more.

And I just freaked out on jacob
and told him to stop.

when craig returns from work,

The house went dark, and it was
like -- it was pitch black.

Kimberly: I was really upset
about what was going on.

I knew this was jacob.

Narrator: craig tries his best
to calm kimberly down,

But each of them knows
they're trapped.

we had talked about moving,
but we couldn't afford it.

We just put a bunch of money
in the house.

if we walked out of the house,

We were gonna lose everything
that we had.

We didn't have somewhere else
to go.

You smell that?

Narrator: suddenly, the couple
smells something foul.

I know that smell.

Craig immediately recognizes
the odor -- farm fertilizer.

My husband, he's done farming
for a long time.

He said it was identical.

Narrator: but it's as if
the fertilizer is burning.

Oh, my god!
The girls' room!

Kimberly:
it almost smelled like gas,
like chemicals being cooked.

Girls?!
What the hell?

I can't open it.

Girls, can you hear me?!
Shylin! Zelina!

Narrator: in a house
