01x03 - The Mart

Post by bunniefuu »

[Teodora] Can you do it any slower, Leo?

We're definitely here.

- Which is where exactly?
- [Leo] Well, obviously, it's...

Anyone can see that this, uh, is the place
Godofredo sent us.

Trusting our fate to that infernal device?

It's no match for a good nose,
a command of the stars,

and a thirst for adventure.

Ooh, maybe you can use the compass
to find those things.

It can't hurt to ask around
for The Brotherhood. They're here.

- You can feel it, can't you?
- Yes.

There is something familiar
about this place.

I don't know about bedeviled,
but something's off, isn't it?

[groaning]

[grunts] Thank you.

[Leo] Hey, kids can't have coffee.

My abuela never let me.
Said it'd stunt my growth.

Too late.

[Leo] Guten abend, ma'am.

- Huh? What's so guten about it?
- Just being friendly.

We're looking for a Brotherhood.
Brothers. Someone brotherly.

Just one more thing.

- Are you having trouble sleeping?
- Why would you say that?

[chuckles nervously]

There's something very unsettling
about this place.

It's like The City That Never Sleeps,
but in a bad way.

Welcome to the Big Strudel.

[yawns] I say we stay in town,
get an early start in the morning.

Well, ghosts don't sleep.

So, I shall haunt the streets
and figure out why this place is so...

So...

[woman snoring]

[clears throat] Hello.

[bell dings]

No refunds.

I mean, hello and welcome
to the Knight's Inn, treasured guest,

where we provide a good night's sleep
and definitely nothing sinister.

- You'll be needing a room?
- Yes.

What a lively accent.
You must have come from afar.

Very.

I was told I could find someone
from The Brotherhood here.

You mean the Brothers Grimm?

- That is absolutely possible.
- They were born in Steinau.

They often stayed here
when they came home.

So, one night.

When will the Brothers
be back in town?

Oh, they're extremely dead.

- Both of them?
- Yes.

- Any relatives?
- Not a soul.

- Their graves?
- In Berlin.

- They leave anything behind?
- Nope.

A pity, really.

Such brilliant men the Grimms were.

Poured years
into their collection of fables.

By the end
it's said they went a little mad.

- Well, where are those?
- Lost forever.

No one's seen it in years.

Anyway, have a great night.

Ooh.

I wonder what it says.

It says, "Steinau... the happiest town
in Germania."

Oh, no, no, no.

[groans]

[gasps and shouts]

No. No, no!

Sleep.

[gasps]

Ah. Leo, since you've decided to join us,

I suppose you won't mind
presenting your report.

Report?

I have a report due?

On the Brothers Grimm, of course.

Oh, thank you so much.

- I'm Wilhelm Grimm. This is my brother.
- I'm Jakob.

The Brotherhood will save you.

[shouts]

[all laughing]

[panting]

Bedeviled.

Bedeviled.
Town's definitely bedeviled.

[people shouting nearby]

Ew. What is that stuff?

Make haste.

We must away.

Now.

You knew. You knew some thing
was going to attack me.

I'm sorry. I needed the money.

Not many guests stay overnight
in a town that sleeps this poorly.

- What was that thing?
- A Nicht Mart.

It sneaks through keyholes
and delivers bad dreams.

Sneaks into every house
and gives people bad dreams like...

Like what, some kind of evil Santa Claus?

No, that's Krampus.

You actually have an evil Santa?

So German, I love it.

The Mart has plagued us for centuries.

All because of one man.

We all curse the name of the fool
who set it upon us.

We curse the name of the coward.

Don Andres.

[Don gasps]

Huh?

She's got her facts all wrong.

I had nothing to do with the Mart.

She sounds like she knows
what she's talking about to me.

Who are you talking to?

Nobody, just sleepy.

Tell me what happened. Maybe I can help.

The last person who offered Steinau help
was the grand, thieving fool himself.

My great-great grandfather was there
when the night terrors began.

And along came a man.

He told them of his great deeds.

They were impressed
by this strange visitor.

[Andres] Well who could blame them?

[woman] He told them a Nicht Mart
was behind their dreams.

A beast that would paralyze its victim

and feed on the terrible thoughts
it gave them.

He told everyone he could defeat it.

Our people were scared.

They gave him a fortune.

[Andres] My group rates
were very reasonable.

[woman] Marts feed on fear.

Don Andres told the people to be brave.

That would starve it.

Then it would flee to find a new place.

The fool was right.

It was a Mart.

But the moment it appeared, he ran.

[Andres] Regrouped.

I regrouped.

[woman]
Marts don't haunt a place for long.

But for us, it made an exception.

The Mart vowed to stay
to punish the people

for trying to stand up to it.

Ever since,
to sleep in Steinau is to dream in fear.

[Andres] That's not. It isn't true.

Not totally.

We should go.

This is a fool's errand.

I should know.
I'm the greatest fool of all, right?

We didn't find The Brotherhood, fine,
but we're here for a reason.

We should help. You can fix what you did.
I need a way to control how I dream.

If I never forget I'm dreaming,
I won't be afraid.

Maybe there is a way.

No, really.

Who are you talking to?

[groans]

Lucid dreaming.
My mom's shrink told her about it.

She has... Had.
...this silly dream journal.

She was supposed to repeat a mantra,
a key phrase,

to remind herself she was dreaming
and in control.

My abuela taught me a rhyme
that might work.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
bless the bed that I lie on.

- Perfect.
- So, I go in, control the dream,

and beat him. Somehow.

[grunts]

The Mart's arrival is signaled
by the presence of moths. [yawning]

[shouts]

Great work staying awake, Leo.

Well met.

I appreciate your contributions
to the team and to society.

And you're kind of cute.

Leo, could you crack that egg
for your abuela?

Leo.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
bless the bed that I lie on.

It's just a dream.

Hey, he fell asleep.

Wake him. Wake him now.

No. Let him try.

If he can control the dream, maybe he can
find the Mart's weakness without our help.

Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John,
bless the bed that I lie on.

Where is the Mart?

Where is it?

[shouting]

Where is the Mart?

You saved me.

Fear not, my little rose.

Let me take you from this place.

Seems someone is trying to wake you.

[voice distorts] Let's have a look.

[playing trumpet]

[pants]

[horn wails]

[chuckles]

We're losing him.

He's been in there too long.

- Who's there?
- He's okay.

Rise and shine, Leo.

- Who is that?
- It's Teodora

- and Alebrije and Don Andres.
- Leo?

[distorted voice] Don Andres. Can it be?

You ran off just as we were getting
to know one another. [chuckles]

Release the boy.

More words from a man without deeds.

I've spent centuries
in these peasants' black dreams,

but your cowardice
is the best I've ever tasted.

I want more.

Please.

Your Leo has already forgotten
he is dreaming.

- After tonight, he will be lost forever.
- [all gasp]

If you want him back,
come and get him, Don Andres.

Save him as you saved Steinau. [chuckles]

Where I'm from, we have a word for this.

He's in a coma.

Hmm. [gasps] Wait. Where's Don Andres?

Probably ran away.

Again.

I'll be right back.

Believe me,
I know exactly what this feels like,

but... please, Leo.

Please wake up.

[Andres] My fault.

My fault.

Oh, yes. Definitely your fault.

If you've come here to cheer me up,
I have some notes.

You were right, all those years ago.

It's people's fear of the Mart
that makes it powerful.

Their belief holds them prisoner.

The old "believe in thyself" speech.

I expected something
a little more original

from a magical Oaxacan rainbow creature.

This isn't a fairy tale.

The fool doesn't redeem himself
at the end.

And it's not about you.

And what would that mean?

It's easy to run when you only fight
for yourself, but this time,

you're fighting for Leo.

Anyway, food for thought.

Let us go, my friend.

If you don't have any bright ideas,
get out.

Oh, but we do.

I returned to the ship
to formulate a plan.

Uh, uh... Yes, yes, that is why he left.

The Mart eats fear.

It must keep its food somewhere.

And we can find it using this.

While we do that,
Don Andres has to enter the dream

and remind Leo that it's not real.

No prob.

Find him and repeat his key phrase.

I bet the Mart has one serious
home security system.

The one flaw, the serious flaw, in my plan
is this: how do I get to sleep?

- I haven't slept since I died.
- I think I might have a way.

Look right here.

Focus on the pretty light.

Follow it with your eyes.

You're getting very, very sleepy.

Nighty night.

Good luck... old man.

[gasps]

[chuckles]

Don't help her.

Back to work.

Deliver your bucket, peon.

Grandson, I can't.

Don't call me that.

Quetzalcoatl is my abuela now.

You know what I mean.
Get back to work.

Leo.

Huh?

Leo, my boy.

This is only a dream.

You must remember.

Come out of it.

Even if it were, what's the point?

It's been years, Don Andres.

Quetzalcoatl won.

Time is different in dreams.

You may not feel it,

but you've only been asleep
for a few hours.

You mustn't give up.

You... You're brave.

Not like me.

Sorry to intrude,
but I think I smell dessert. [chuckles]

Leo!

Matthew, Mark, Luke and John,
bless the bed that I lie on.

Oh, yeah.

He remembers now, you mangy cur.

[Leo] I'm back, baby.

[both shouting]

Hey, look... a m*rder house.

Ladies first?

[groans]

You know, it's not that bad.

A fresh coat of paint, some flowers,
we could flip it.

[Alebrije shouting]

Hmm.

[panting]

This isn't my dream.

No, it's mine.

[crowd] You left us to suffer.

I'm sorry. I'm so sorry.

It was all a lie, Leo.

I never fought the supernatural.

I never did anything.

I'm a charlatan.

- [Mart] He's right, you know?
- Huh?

[Mart] I am the only real monster
you've ever faced.

And you wet yourself
the moment you saw me.

We are not afraid of you.

[Andres] He feeds on fear.

We have to believe that he can't hurt us.

Easy for you to sa... [shouting]

You can't stop me.

Oh, no.

The Mart said after tonight
Leo would be lost forever.

It's almost dawn.

Oh, what a beautiful view.
Don't you just love the colors in the sky?

Alebrije, behind you.

[shouting]

[Andres] Know what's great
about being a charlatan?

In my mind, I can be however I want.

And now, my friend,
you are inside my mind.

And I choose to be awesome.

Quick, if I were a Mart,
where would I hide fear?

It eats fear, doesn't it?
I'd keep my food in the kitchen.

Huh?

[shouting]

- Uh... Teodora.
- Huh? Oh.

Oh. Gotcha.

- You can't stop me.
- I know.

I had only to delay you.

Impossible.

[both grunting]

Awesome.

The kitchen, huh?

Always thinking with your stomach.

Sorry, what?

[laughing]

[Teodora]
Oh, Alebrije.

[yawns]

[townspeople snoring]

[yawns]

We did it. [laughs]

Yes, we did.

Hey, everyone,
look what the early birds got.

We found this in the Mart's lair.

Alebrije.

This... This is amazing.

This... That innkeeper.

She was right.

The end of the book
is just random symbols.

The Grimms... must have gone crazy
right before they died.

That's not gibberish, Leo.

It's Japanese. Duh.

[all cheering]
