[reporter] Details are still very sketchy,

but there does seem to have been

some sort of security incident

that has affected large parts of the tube.

[man 1] when there was a loud bang

and everything went dark.

[man 2] I've seen people

distressed by

[woman] We need to get ambulances

to Edgware Road tube station now!

[reporter] Some people

are saying the train

has just broken down in the tunnel.

There's people coming out covered in blood

and all the smoke and dust

[safety officer] How much further?

[Todd] Maybe half a mile.

The train was between the two stations

when the b*mb went off.

[safety officer] Maybe we should

wait a bit.

For the heat and the dust to die down.

[Todd] No, I've got to get to that train.

- [rail screeching in distance]

- Can you hear that?

I thought you said the power was off?

Is this track live?

Must be running under its own power.

There are reports that officers

have entered tube tunnels

to help passengers to safety.

He said he was on his way to work,

entered the station,

and then there was a massive expl*si*n.

Passengers resorted to breaking windows

to escape from the train and get back

the key piece of information

this morning is that the police and the

some sort of statement.

They asked you not to speak to the media

until the picture becomes clearer.

How much clearer do they want?

Six explosions. Dead and wounded.

who recorded footage on her mobile phone

of the bus exploding.

But our initial analysis is that

there appears to be no intelligence

which might have predicted today's events.

Andy, what can you tell us?

Well, as yet, no organization

has claimed responsibility,

and I'm afraid there's still

a lot of confusion.

[Clarke] What are we talking about?

Suicide bombers? Remote devices?

[Hayman] We don't know yet.

We have teams at the trains,

but the conditions underground

are so difficult

that we can't even be 100% certain

how many fatalities there are.

- Why not, can I ask?

- The heat was extreme.

It's over 40 degrees down there,

that's causing all sorts of issues.

And at any given scene,

the nature of the explosions

in such a confined space

means that we're dealing

with, quite literally,

thousands of body parts

and pieces of body tissue.

I see.

Do we have any idea

how many explosions there have been?

- Confirmed? Four.

- I'm sorry, Home Secretary,

but I don't think

that's an accurate picture.

Aldgate, Edgware Road, King's Cross,

and the bus at Tavistock Square.

- I've had information about six scenes.

- No, I think there are only four.

This is exactly why we need clarity.

Scotland Yard are holding

a press conference.

I can tell you that these incidents

- I thought he'd been told not to do this!

- are extremely serious

and there will be significant

loss of life,

but above all, my message to you

is to stay calm.

How many bombs have gone off?

Well, this is clearly

a coordinated t*rror1st attack.

But we think there are

about six explosions so far

but it's still a very confusing scene

and the most important point

is that we will gradually,

but as quickly as we can,

assume complete order over the process.

Whether it's four, six, seven, eight,

bloody ten,

the point is, are these f*ck

still out there?

[Todd] The b*mb appears to have been

detonated at low level.

Most of the injuries seem to be

from the waist down.

I'd say, erm

several kilograms of high expl*sive

detonated at, or just above, floor level.

The centre of the blast

located in carriage one,

Most of the dead had severe trauma

and amputations to their lower limbs

and trunk except for one.

When I turned him over,

he alone had trauma to the head.

In fact he almost had no face left.

So meaning what?

Meaning he was almost certainly

crouching down next to the b*mb

when it exploded.

Probably because he'd triggered it.

My guess is this is the work

of a suicide b*mber.

Yeah, all the usual caveats.

More time needed for analysis,

further gathering of residue samples

etcetera, etcetera.

But the initial forensic assessment

of the scenes seems pretty conclusive.

I think all of them died with their bombs.

that it is designed and aimed

to coincide with the opening of the G8.

It's important, however,

that those engaged in terrorism realize

that our determination

to defend our values and our way of life

is greater

than their determination to cause

death and destruction to innocent people

in a desire to impose extremism

on the world.

Whatever they do, it is our determination

that they will never succeed

in destroying what we hold dear

in this country.

Today's bombings

will not weaken in any way

our resolve to uphold the most

deeply held principles of our societies.

We shall prevail

and they shall not.

on Mohammad Sidique Khan

who we think detonated the device

at Edgware Road tube station.

- What kind of intelligence?

- His name cropped up

during an investigation

into an al-Qaeda plan

to detonate a fertilizer truck b*mb

at Bluewater Shopping Centre last year.

So do we know if any other UK nationals

attended these camps?

Well, in my opinion

it's long past the time

when we should have gone into that flat.

There were no signs

of any chemical residues

found at any of the b*mb scenes

or evidence of biological weapons.

And the testing at Porton Down

on the one small sample

that was retrieved from the flat

has so far failed to identify

any chemical or biological agents.

And on that basis,

I'm prepared to enter the flat

and begin proper analysis

of the substance in those tubs.

Evidence of b*mb making detritus.

They've been boiling down peroxide

as I guessed.

Evidence of organic matter.

Weighing scales.

This is what I'm after.

Mixture looks relatively stable in here.

But I need to test the pH.

of what happened on July the 7th.

The detonator was a home-made

high expl*sive in powder form,

probably ignited

by a bare electric filament.

Then the main expl*sive was, we think,

hydrogen peroxide used as an oxidizer,

and the fuel, ground pepper.

In this instance it was pepper.

The tricky part, I'm reliably informed,

is to boil down the peroxide

and then combine it with the pepper

in precisely the right proportion.

Almost any organic material

would have worked. Wheat,

rice, flour

Once the peroxide is concentrated enough,

we mix it with the flour

and put it in a plastic container.
