[Alex] It's a goal to get out of

is great and... annoying.

Probably the best way I can describe it.
It's a gift and a curse.

is just the constant comparison.

in the shadow of someone all your life,

when he was growing up,

and that was difficult for me.

making millions of dollars,
and Alex is kinda just the other guy.

Yeah, that was pretty...
that was pretty surreal

because I just got a text
from "Unknown Number," and it was like,

"Congrats, Matt. Michael Jordan."

And I was like,
"Wait, that's, like, Michael Jordan."

It was just really, really surreal.

[Matt] After I won
the U.S. Open last year,

you know, it's been,
obviously, very, very positive.

I'm just very happy, I think.

I feel very lucky where my life is at
at the minute.

I don't think recent success
has necessarily changed me as a person.

I feel like I still want to kind of be me.

Incredibly smart girl
and not sure what she's doing with me,

so I'm pretty lucky.

First time I met him, there was something
about the way he carried himself,

which everyone seems to be drawn into.

down the road, here we are.

I've been telling you this for years.

[Alex] In professional sport,
not a lot of people have comparisons

to brothers or siblings or family.

But Rachel's mom, Brenda Kuehn,
was a really good golfer.

[Alex] Growing up, we both had
these similar situations.

The big story that always comes up
about my mom is she played

in the U.S. Open in 2001,
eight months pregnant with me.

Basically, I've already played
in the U.S. Open.

-You had an inside-the-ropes pass.
-[Rachel] I basically had... Yeah.

I think it was something that you and I
kind of bonded over in the beginning.

It was like I felt
like I almost had something to prove

to show that I'm my own person.

You always felt like you were trying
to get out of Matt's shadow.

[Alex] And now we're both still
in the shadow.

It's a big jump to suddenly playing
with your brother on the PGA TOUR.

It was just a really good event

for Alex to test himself
against the best players in the world.

I was certainly a bit nervous for Alex.

[announcer 1] Maybe some adrenaline.

[announcer 2] Sometimes
it's more difficult as well

because you're trying to live up
to the expectations of your brother.

[man] Nice shot.

[announcer 1] That is a beauty.

That's textbook right there.

Just making it easy on his little brother.

[Dan] Playing in the circuit
puts Alex in the spotlight earlier

than it would have happened naturally.

And he hasn't quite earned his opportunity

to play against the best players
on the PGA TOUR,

and he's getting a chance to this week
because of Matt's success.

And he can't hide.

It's a little scary, to be honest.
You feel like you're getting judged.

I don't want people to believe Matt's just
picked him because he's your brother.

kind of gets discounted

So, it was hard to watch him

knowing that he felt
like he didn't play great.

getting to that stage right now
with the situation I'm in.

It feels like a long way away,

but as long as I keep working hard,
hopefully I'll get there someday.

My goal this year is
to get off the Challenge Tour.

I will take this one and this one in.

win lots of majors and lots of tournaments

and become world number one,
so a slight difference in the two.

in this year's Open Championship.

there's this Open qualifier

where hundreds of golfers
from all over the world come together

to compete for less than 20 spots.

The makeup is anything from someone
you've never heard of to major champions.

And nothing matters except going out there

and sh**ting, you know,
the best 36 holes maybe of your life.

[indistinct chatter]

[announcer] Five men are currently
in the qualification positions,

including Alex Fitzpatrick,
the younger brother

of the 2022 U.S. Open champion,
Matt Fitzpatrick.

[Alex] My brother first qualified in 2013,

and then he played every Open
that he's played in ever since.

I was never meant
to play in any majors this year.

[Russell] We were nervous watching Alex
trying to qualify for the Open.

I mean, why wouldn't you be?

It's difficult for Alex
because his brother had done all that,

and Alex had had to see
an awful lot of his brother playing

at various major championships.

Any brother of a relatively
famous sports person

is gonna feel in the shadows, really.

It was probably the first chance
that Alex had had

to step out of that shadow, if you like,
if he managed to qualify for the Open.

[Alex] I did manage to qualify
for the British Open,

something that I only dreamed of as a kid.

I'm excited to get going and experience
what it's like to play in one.

and for us as a family.

It wasn't, "How do you feel like?"

"You've beaten your brother."
It wasn't any of that.

Alex, tell me what it's like
to walk off in your first major,

your first Open Championship,
at four-under, on the leaderboard,

with the leaders in your sights?

It wasn't, "Matt Fitzpatrick's brother's
in fourth place."

It's, "Alex Fitzpatrick's

that people were looking at Alex

as his own player worthy of attention

Rather than asking how he was.

But I know how he feels now
