a special person that motivated you?

for me, I would say, is
a guy we all know of by the name
of Tiger Woods. You guys heard of him?

- [golfer] I watched Tiger.
I started playing golf
in the summer of '97.
You guys know
what happened in April of '97?
- Anybody remember that?
- [man 2] Yup.
Out of my mind ♪

A win for the ages!
[golfer] The '97 Masters
was so inspiring to me.
I just remember watching everybody
in complete awe of this Tiger Woods guy.
And then I also recognized that
this guy is the same skin color as I am.
[man 3] America has a distinct race issue.
That's always the barrier
in America, right?
The best part about golf, in a sense,
is, like, once you sh**t 66,
they can't turn you away.
You can't be held back for any
other reason except what you sh**t.
I think that what Tiger defined is that
people look past that or beyond that,
just because he was so great.
1997 Masters, Tiger won.
I watched that tournament with my dad,
and I was like, "You know what?
I want to be like that guy."
Tiger Woods always said, uh,
"Don't get bitter, get better."
Amen. Two words
that fix everything in golf.
- Play better. [chuckles]

is because of Tiger.
He opened up a pathway
for so many more kids
that never would've thought,
you know, golf was for them.

you can be a great golfer
and be a great husband and father.
Balancing it is extremely tough, but,
to me, it's like why can't I have both?

And then I'm full Samoan.
The foundation of our culture is family.
Come on, man.
[Finau] I'm traveling with my family
this season pretty much every week.
[Jraice] You got served!
It's nice, because, like, I have a husband
that comes home, like, after every day.
Oh no!
[Finau laughs]

I was so close!
- That was the closest he's ever been.
- You're bad.
Nice try, dude.
[Alayna] This year, I lost my dad,
and that's kind of what
pushed our family, um, to travel together.
[Finau] My wife's dad, unfortunately,
passed away at the end of last year,
so I wanted to be there for her.
And the way we knew that was gonna happen
was that they needed to travel with me.
And it's been
a great experience for our family
to just be together during this time.
I've had a nice career up to this point
to take care of most of the needs
that we have as a family.
[Jraice] Dad, do you have
your Junior World in here?
- Ooh.
- Or does Papa have it?
I think Papa has that one.
[Finau] Now it's, to me, just focusing
on winning golf tournaments,
more than that added pressure of
financially being afloat
and providing for them.
Early in my career that was more the case,
living out of a car, different things
like that right out of the gate.
When I first got married, it was tough.
There wasn't a lot of expectations on
a kid who grew up really dirt poor in Utah
to make it to the PGA TOUR.
It's truly an underdog story.
[Alayna] Tony didn't come from a lot.
His parents, they had seven kids.
He came from a rough neighborhood.
A lot of gangs and violence.
His dad believed that,
"If I keep my kids busy, then
they don't have time to get into trouble."
[Finau] Look a little bit different?
- Or it look the same to you?
- [man] Looks the same.
- [Finau] Look at all these dents.
- [man] Yeah.
My wife and I, we would always talk about
a way to keep them out of trouble.
What decided we're gonna teach these kids
how to play golf? I have no idea.
I literally thought this has got to be
the dumbest game ever.
Tennis is so much easier.
[laughs]
[Kelepi] The garage was never open,
because the net was tied
on top of the ceiling.
[Finau] We could never open the garage.
Yeah.
People was normal to hear, like a shotgun,
because the neighborhood was sh**ting too.
- That's right.
- [laughs]
[Finau] My brother randomly
told my dad he wanted to play golf.
He didn't know anything about golf.
He had never played it before.
So with the budget that we had,
he knew he had to figure out a way
for us to learn how to play at home.
His invention was,
"I'm gonna put up a mattress
in our garage. That's how
my boys are gonna learn how to hit."
"And we'll go to the golf course
to chip and putt since it's free."
We couldn't afford range ba*ls,
so we'll go pound the mattresses.
We'll go once a week to the range
and see what we had
and see how straight the ba*ls are.
[laughs]
[Finau] There was no plan B for me.
My golf game was the plan.
I mean, how many hours
were spent in this garage?
Like I wanted to be so good at golf.
I remember some
countless times just telling you,
"Dad, can we just go
hit some ba*ls in the garage?"
- Yeah. Well
- You know?
[Kelepi] It was a lot to learn, but it's
shocking we can come up with a system
to learn how
to hit a golf ball and compete.
[Morikawa] How many people you think last
year came versus what this year will be?
[man] They never released numbers.
I had heard of it was about 5,000 a day.
[Morikawa] What is it normally here?
- Forty.
- [Morikawa] Oh, wow.
It's gonna feel very different.
This'll be the first year you play
Masters with grandstands.
Yeah.
It'll be nice.
Koa, are you excited
for your first Masters?
[Morikawa] After I win one major, the PGA,
and then after, I win The Open
the next day, like,
I just want to go do it again.
We've been at a point now where, you know,
I hadn't won since the 2021 Open,
and, uh, you know, for me, so far,
early in my career, it's been a long time.
[Morikawa] Majors are career defining.
You want to put on a green jacket,
but at the end of the day,
you still want to win everything.
And what, Tiger won 80-some times.
It doesn't get tiring winning 82 times.
I mean Can I say this?
I want this one more than the others?
I mean, I want them all.

From the car accident, significant trauma,
questions if he would ever walk again.

shoulder surgery, knee, ankle.

Tony Finau had a front-row seat to maybe
the most famous round in golf history.
He was playing with Tiger Woods
in the 2019 final round when Tiger won.
The fact that Tiger won the Masters
was ridiculous.
This was Tiger Woods
completing his comeback,
winning his first major championship
in over a decade.
And he'd suffered broken legs,
ACLs, personal embarrassment.
So for everyone in golf to be rooting
for the same thing,
and then for that thing to happen,
was pretty ridiculous.
And Tony Finau was right there to see it.
[Finau] This is something
I dreamed my whole life.
I remember getting off the 7th tee,
first opportunity I had to talk to Tiger.
You know, it was a bit
of an awkward silence.
Asked him how the kids were doing.
Looked over at me, like, "They're fine."
And he just started
to walk a little faster.
I got the message
that he didn't want to talk.
- [cheering]
- [announcer 4] The return to glory!
Tiger was in a state of mind
I don't know if Tony's ever been in,
which is that singularly focused
on the task at hand.
The greatest players in this game
seem to be consumed by golf,
and Tony Finau's not like that.
He's got a balance in his life
that not everyone does.
[Kelepi] Ah.
- You see where he ended up?
- He's short of it.
[Rapaport] He cares deeply
about his family,
and whether that's a hindrance
to his golf game, I don't know.

[Finau] I was there, through nine holes,
and I made some mistakes.
Next thing you know,
I was eight, nine, ten shots back.

[Alayna] Traveling as a family,
it kind of weighs heavily on me.
He feels like he's not performing
to the best of his abilities
that he knows that he's capable of.

Maybe we're a little too much for him,
'cause I feel like it was
a drastic change to traveling with nobody,
to, like, all of a sudden, there's,

that they didn't like themselves
when they played their best golf.
They were on edge.
They're not completely present
with their family.
And none of that seems to me

[Renner] I can only imagine
how annoying it is for Tony Finau
to be asked all the time,
"What is separating you
from becoming a champion?"
It's a narrative. It's a thing.
He's so talented. It makes people wonder
who watch week in and week out,
"Well, why isn't he just winning?"
"Are you distracted by your kids
when you come home from the golf course?"

[Renner] Tony has to figure out,
"Do I function better
with my family and kids out here,
or do I function better being by myself?"
[Morikawa] I don't have
the family that Tony has.
He's got five kids, and I'm just learning
how to travel with a dog.
I'm, like, super organized, and I hate
I hate when things are not in place.
And if I was coming around with ten people
and I didn't know what was going on
Man, that's I'm getting, like,
the anxi-shakes, like, trying
to figure things out, thinking about that.
Finishing up the Masters
a top five, I'd take it.
I had one of the most memorable shots
I'll ever have on 18 with Rory.
I hit a great tee shot.
And I'm like, "Okay."
"This is gonna be easy."
And, uh plugged it right in the bunker.
So I'm in the bunker. I'm walking up.
I see where Rory's ball is.
I'm like, "Thank God that's not my ball."
Thinking he's got
one of the most impossible shots ever.
[announcer] This is impossible,
a bit of a hit and hope.
[Morikawa] He hits his shot.
Trickling over the slope, I'm like,
"Wow, this is really
This is looking really good."
And sooner or later, it drops in the hole.
[announcer 2] Look at that.
That is just awesome.
He goes crazy,
and his arms go in directions
that I've never seen
someone's arms ever go.
[announcer 2] What a round. Sixty-four.
It matches the lowest final round score
in Masters history.
[Morikawa] Now it's time
for me to hit my shot.

They've been matching each other
much of the day.
Oh! Again! You can't make it up.

I am now blacking out.

But it was my best Masters finish,
just more of, like, a confidence boost,
knowing that, you know,
we had one good decent
major finish under your belt

to separate from the golf course,
but it's tough, because we're
always thinking on how to perfect it.

We're all selfish.

and we have to take control.
You have to be a little more selfish
than what you actually want to.

[Morikawa] Obviously, I set my standards,
set the goals really high,
and I think about what have I learned, is
The biggest thing
is just taking care of myself.

People take being selfish as a bad thing.
It's a good thing.
[man] Yeah, good.
[Morikawa] Thinking about
what's best for me.
Good. Other side.
[Morikawa] That's always hard to do,
because we care about people around us.
You have to be selfish about
making sure you're managing your time,
managing your health
and everything about it
to come out and perform the best.

I know what it's like to lose a parent.

Tony's mother, Vena,
and Tony's father-in-law, Tipa.
[Finau] You know, there's always
[sniffles] There's always
a special person
[sniffles]
in my life that's never able to be here.

[Alayna] Tony's mom, Ravena,
she passed away in 2011.
Ravena, his sister Narnar,
and his oldest brother, Kinga,
they got into a tragic car accident,
and she passed away on the spot.

My parents would drive me up in this
up and down this whole state
as a kid, and
We didn't know anything about golf.
I didn't know how to play golf,
didn't know how to dress.

[Finau] And I can't help
but think about the wonderful sacrifice
that my parents have made
for me, my family.
But they've been
there since the beginning.
She passed away on November 27th, 2011,
and then I had Jraice
November 28th, the next day.
So, yeah, it was It was crazy.
[Kelepi] Tony is his mom.
Very open, very generous, very loving.
Tony misses her all the time.
She was really, really close with Tony.
It's a motivation for him
to achieve what he has achieved.
Making sure that
he can make his mom proud
and doing the things
that his mom wanted him to do.
[Finau] I had a pretty amazing mom.
I feel like I just have to show the world,
not only what a great player I am,
but the person I was raised to be.
[Finau] There's so many firsts
in that first year.
The first day without her,
the first week, the first month,
the first Thanksgiving, Christmas
[clicks teeth]
[sniffles]
I'm sorry.
The traditions, you know,
we created as family
You know, that first year
was extremely difficult to get through.
[ethereal music playing]
[baby crying]
[Finau] Baby.
Hi, baby.
Hi, baby.
[Finau] My career means a lot to me.
And at times, I think we can mistake
that it means everything.
Come on, girl.
You don't be looking at Daddy's cards!
Come on, man!
I knew what my wife was going through.
I knew what she was dealing with.
It was more important for me
to be there for her during these firsts
than really be anywhere else.
And so could my game
have taken a back seat?
Maybe. [chuckles]
Potentially.
But that That's not nearly
as important to me as my wife was
and making sure I was there for her
as the strength that she's been
for me for many years.
[Finau] Nene. Give me my card, Nene.
Be nice.

- [Alayna] You have a long way to go.
- Twenty. Let's go.
- [Jraice] Let's get this.

[Finau] When I have a vision of my mom,
I envision her smiling all the time.
She has this saying in Samoan,
tumau le malosi,
and she would always pound her chest.
And that means be strong or stay strong.
And I think about that all the time.
[announcer] This week at the 3M, the story
has been 43-year-old Scott Piercy.
[announcer 2] It's really his tournament
going out with a four-shot lead on Sunday.
It was so important after The Open
to just take the small victories with me.
One of the small victories was
that I made a big putt when it counted.
And that may sound funny to some people,
but to me, that's a big deal.
[announcer 3] If this putter gets hot,
he could be a factor.
These are the ones
you feel like you have to make.
- [announcer] He did!
- [announcer 2] There!
[Finau] The putter started to feel better.
So things were starting to line up.
[announcer] Watch out. Tony Finau,
a couple of early birdies.
[dramatic music playing]
[announcer 2] Piercy for par.
A five-shot lead over Tony Finau.
[announcer 3] Okay,
so his first bobble of round four.
[announcer 2] Piercy steps in to try
to avoid a second consecutive bogey.
Okay, they'll make the turn,
the last group
with Piercy's lead reduced to four.
[announcer 3] It'll be very interesting
to see how close he could get.
[Renner] We're all thinking Scott Piercy
has complete control of this tournament.
- And that's not the case.
- [announcer 4] There you go.
Tony Finau, come from behind,
starts climbing up this leaderboard.
[announcer 4] Big putt here for Piercy.
He's dropped back to 17-under.
[Renner] The knock on Tony is
when he needs to make certain putts,
they don't drop.

[Renner] And all of a sudden,
he starts making those putts
he wouldn't make previously
when he was in contention.
[announcer 4] Gotta go.
Still in the sand.
[Finau] Oh, god dammit.
Keep right. Keep right.
[crowd] Oh!
[announcer 4] It's a hard game.
[announcer 5] It's a cruel game.
[announcer] Finau,
he's about to be the leader.
[Finau] One thing I've always dreamed of
is having my family there for a win.
They weren't there for my first win,
for my second win.

[announcer] Incredible.
Now he's at 17.
[chanting] Tony, here we go!
Here we go, Tony!

[Finau] And I had such an adrenaline rush.
I went from three down on 13
to four up teeing up on 17.
Seriously, it just feels
like goosebumps and like ah!
Just, like, a flutter in my heart.
Like, "Yes, he has this."
Like, "It's his time."
[announcer 6] The young man
has had ten 2nds in his career
along with the two wins.
And in those ten 2nds,
he has had a lot of bad luck.
So, it's good to see
he's finally had some good luck.
[Renner] Tony Finau figured out a way
to do it with this family watching.
And it was unbelievable.
[Foley] People will,
when they talk about Tony, they say,
"Man, Tony's a great golfer, but" Right?
The great thing about a career,
a career's a long time.
It's a long time.
He's just getting started. He really is.
[announcer] Now Finau, to win it.
Tony Finau! The champion at the 3M!
[cheering and applause]
[announcer] The man from Salt Lake
has won in the Land of 10,000 Lakes.
[Renner] You're wearing green today
as you always do to honor your mother.
This is the first win where everyone
in your family is here in attendance.
What does this one mean?
[Finau] Yeah, you're gonna get me
all choked up here.
I love my family.
I love my mom. I miss her, and, um
It's so special to have
my family here with me.
There's been a lot of people
that have got me to this point,
and I'd be selfish
not to thank so many people.
But my parents and my wife are people
that have supported me from day one.
You know, this one's for them.
Tony, you have earned this victory.
Go celebrate with your family.

[Finau] My wife, she's been a rock to me
from the beginning of our marriage.
You know, she saw me play
when I pretty much was nobody. [chuckles]

[Finau] Getting through
those years together,
man, that was tough.
And now she gets to watch me
in front of the world,
'cause she was there
when no one else was too.
[tender music playing]

[Foley] Tony's win at 3M? There's a lot
of talking heads out there, right?
So they talk about, you know,
the strength of field being weak.
People are allowed
to think whatever they want.
They have the right to their opinion.
A win is a win.
Isn't that funny how we always ask,
"Why isn't Tony Finau winning more?"
And then he wins,
and then we're finding reasons
to not give him the credit he deserves.
[Finau] I had a sour taste
in my mouth after the win.
Honestly, I still thought
that I had something to prove.
Silence some of the doubters
if they have any doubt the week before
on the weak field
and whatever the naysayers had to say.
[indistinct chatter]
[announcer] From Detroit,
it's the final round
of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.
Everyone's chasing this man, Tony Finau,
trying to go back-to-back on the PGA TOUR.
[Finau] He felt like
after winning on the PGA TOUR,
he got up the next week and said,
"I have something more to prove."
And if that isn't a champion's mentality,
I don't know what is.
Some of the best golf I think
that I've played in my career.
[announcer 2] So it is Finau
who has just
chewed up this second half this week.
Has a three-shot lead on the 11th green.
[Finau] I made one bogey
throughout the week,
which I'm actually still
a little sour about.
It would be nice to say
zero bogeys on the week.
[announcer 3] Going left with speed.
- [announcer 4] Oh, it's perfect.
- [announcer] It's a sweet tune at 12.
[cheering]
[announcer] Finau bounces right back
after his first bogey of the week.
[Foley] What's happened up to this point,
it's all been schooling
and education for him.
And I think he's starting to sort it out,
where everything fits.

[Foley] I mean,
to win back-to-back weeks on tour,
that just speaks more
to where his game is evolving.
[Renner] To me, that was the thing
that said he's ready to take this thing
to a whole different place that
we haven't seen yet from Tony Finau.
[announcer]The floodgates are open

as he goes back-to-back on the PGA TOUR.

[Renner] I think now
the question's gonna be,
"Well, okay,

And people are just always
going to want more from Tony Finau.

Who do you hope these wins are inspiring?
Hopefully, the next generation,
and especially my son back home.

they see the work that Dad puts in,
and it means everything to me

but they watch me win as well.
And that's what it takes to be a champion.

validate how I go about my business.

minds about who I am and how I do it?
You know, that's up to them.
I haven't allowed
the outside noise to tell me
who I am and how
I should go about doing what I do.
For me, always family first.

And that's how I truly feel.
You know, if you don't win, you learn.

You know, in golf, you don't win a lot.
There's a lot of learning you do
when it comes to golf,
because you ain't gonna win every week.
But that's really the game of life.
I mean, how many more Ls does it feel
like we take than Ws, right?

and we just try to keep moving forward.
