and everyone can think,

"Maybe I can win
the championship this year,

but you really need to get off
to that good start."

But it is very safe to say
that Josef Newgarden

overshadowed everybody
at St. Pete.

Absolutely mopped the floor
with the rest of the field.

What a way to start
a new season.

- It was an easy day.
- I don't want to say that,

but it felt easy today.

Pato went into St. Pete

wanting to prove that last year
was not the norm.

- Yeah. It stings.
- Another second place.

Always the bridesmaid,
never the bride.

Pato doesn't show up to these
races to finish second,

and he is still really itching
to get back to victory land.

We didn't win in St. Pete.

Everybody is very aware
of that as we are.

Whenever you work so hard
for something,

whenever you do beat them
and whenever you do actually

come out on top against
the guys

that have basically
controlled the series,

it just makes it
that much sweeter.

I don't know if there's any
driver on the grid

that hates second place
more than Pato.

It's a really difficult task
for a driver to go through.

The common trend of the year was that
Pato was always coming in second and third

and who's at the top spot
of the podium?

It's Alex Palou.

Alex Palou did what Alex Palou
does in 2023.

But it's an absolute mess off
track for Palou right now.

Alex Palou is staring
at a $30 million

breach of contract soon.

He cannot pay this
if he loses this.

I think you could call 2023 a
season of near misses for Pato.

He was so close, so many times.

- Brought home seven podiums.

I almost wonder if it got
a little frustrating.

And then it sort of came off
the rails a little bit.

Not the kind of move you need to
make at that part of the race.

When you just have the second
and second and third

and second and it just goes on.

I think you're willing
to make moves

and push a little bit harder.

And he spins!

Pato O'Ward has crashed
out of the Indianapolis 500.

It was a low percentage move,
for sure.

I managed to sort of keep
the car

pointing in the right direction.
He spun out.

You know, angry and thought
it was my fault, you know?

So it goes.

I was a little too nice there.

I got on to the apron
to give him room.

I got squeezed and...

Yeah, I won't forget that one.

Last year for us was...

I wouldn't say a lost cause,
because that's definitely

not the way we should be
looking at it.

This year I'm going to try
and stay cool.

I want to win races
and I want to be a champion,

both 500 and the championship.

I really want that.

I know a win or a few
wins will fall.

They're coming.

All we have to do is just keep
putting ourselves into that position to...

The hardest driver
and team to beat this year

is going to be Alex Palou
in the ten Ganassi car.

Like he dominated. The worst
result he had was eighth.

We had three DNFs.

How do you stand a fighting
chance against that?

That's amazing.

That's top of the line.

with everything that happened.

I became a dad.

So when it's my turn to change
a diaper, it's easier to do,

the happiness level

even more for me.
I'm a very happy person.

I feel really lucky to be able
to have the life that I have,

and to be able to drive IndyCars
for a living.

But I didn't know that extra
happiness existed

and my baby gave it to me.

Then it's not true
that racing drivers

lose a little bit
when they become dads.

I'm not worried about that.

I think you can see that
it was not difficult in 2023.

of Groundhog's Day

with Alex Palou last year.

So when you win three in a row,

It was my second championship.

It felt different to my 2021
championship.

It was even better just
because of the success

and the results
we got on track.

One of those years
that are truly special.

He is, without a doubt, one of
the most complete drivers

that you will find in the field.
He's good everywhere.

He doesn't make mistakes.
He's got it all going on.

Alex Palou is a professional

and he's really,
really good at his job.

The only thing he's not done
is won the Indy 500.

The Indy 500, it's one that
there's so many things

that can go wrong,
and there's only one way

that you can win it.

things happen,

like it happened
last year.

Palou's month of May
was going flawlessly.

He was in control of the race
at the 500

until a pit stop kind of set
everything in the wrong direction.

I was very pissed, I wanted
to have a fight with somebody.

Until that moment,
we were feeling amazing.

At the end of the day,
it's racing.

Things happen.

It is what it is.

We fell a bit short,
but we tried.

I have two championships,
but I'm missing an Indy 500.

Winning the 500 this year
would mean...

Honestly, it would mean
everything.

I extended my contract
because I believe in them.

Just because I know where
we will be in the 500 champions,

we will be IndyCar champions.

We have to keep pushing.

There really is no other way
to say it.

It'll be hard,
but if it was easy,

everybody would be able
to do it.

Pato obviously has
a lot of faith in this team.

They extended the contract
with him for a few more seasons.

But racing is
a performance-based business,

and if you're not performing,
your job is under threat.

I imagine the pressure this year
has gone up a little bit

for McLaren after going
winless in '23.

You have to remember,
it's a relatively new team.


name came into IndyCar.

And when you're coming up
against a team like Team Penske.

Chip Ganassi Racing,
Andretti Global,

they've been around
for a very long time.

So as a new team,
when you come in

and you try to catch up
with these guys,

it can take a long time.

There's no shortcut for some
of this stuff.

[groaning]

For 2024, I was supposed
to have a new teammate,

which was Alex Palou.

[chuckles]
Um...

That didn't come together.

I was shocked, everybody else
in the team was shocked.

I would have loved to have had
him as a teammate.

And it would be a great measure
for me

because he's truly been the
benchmark for the whole series.

But that didn't come
to fruition.

That's as much as I know,

and that's as much
as I want to know.

We're gonna do fast,
first to the next line.

Quick steps.

If you're on a team
where you feel like

you're not getting treated
like you want to get treated,

that is a reason to leave.

At the start of last year,

Alex just wasn't feeling
the love from Chip Ganassi.

So Alex decided to sign
a contract with McLaren.

While Chip Ganassi still had
an option on his services.

One of racing's young stars

seems to have found a new ride
for next year.

Alex Palou says he's driving
for McLaren next year.

It's a mind-blowing scenario.

How can you justify leaving

the team at Chip Ganassi
right now?

At some point during
the 2023 season,

while he was dominating the
championship with Chip Ganassi,

I might add, he decided,

"I don't actually want to go
to McLaren anymore."

And he resigned
with Chip Ganassi

despite having a contract
existing with McLaren.

Two teams signed the same guy,
apparently,

which I've literally never seen,
ever.

Now Alex Palou is not going
to McLaren?

I mean, what is happening?

Can you clarify where
you stand next year

with your contract?

I'm not going to comment
on next year.

Is Alex Palou going to be
in your car again next year?

Palou is going to be
in our car, I can tell you that.

It has created a very messy
legal situation

and a massive tug of w*r
for his services.

Huh, it's still...

it's still ongoing,
as we speak, a little bit.

So that's why maybe I cannot,
uh...

explain as much stuff and give
as more detail as I would like.

Before you move on,

Uh... I thought
it was worth mentioning.

Obviously, we're looking forward

and got our sights on
Team Penske and Chip Ganassi.

But we should also be mindful of
Ray Hall and Andretti.

We're scrapping for talent
with these people.

- Yes.

Zach did not take the whole
Palou situation very well

and understandably so.

It's tough when you've already
inked a deal to back out of it.

Uh...

How would I answer
that question?

We signed a contract with Alex.

Last time I'd spoken with him,
everything was great.

Looking forward
to our announcement

in a couple of weeks.

And then was informed
he'd changed his mind

and signed another contract,
which was quite shocking.

Never got a courtesy call.

I haven't spoken with him since.

The lawsuit is proceeding
as planned,

and we're suing him
for ultimately

not honouring his contract.

But, there's a variety
of damages

within our claims; sponsors
were expecting him to come

with a certain amount
of sponsorship.

And so, you know,
the implications of him coming

have cost us millions
and millions of dollars,

which, of course,
we intend to recoup.

It's pretty clear he's breached
his agreement.

These things will play out
in due course,

but now that I know
the personality behind the man,

I'm happy with the three racing
drivers we have

and the integrity in which
they operate.

[machine whirring]
Are these new?

Yeah, we put them
in originally for interns,

and now look,
we're full again.

[laughing]

Zack Brown and McLaren
have brought a new dynamic

into the IndyCar paddock.

They are paying higher
driver salaries.

They are paying higher
engineer salaries,

mechanic crew salaries.

And the other teams have had
to react

to try to retain
their talent.

Arrow McLaren, they might have
the best budget in IndyCar.

Certainly they are up there

and for them to not win a race
last year,

I'm guessing that that's a point
of contention.

Winning is very top of mind.

I think the only reason why
we all come in every day.

Our season last year, I would
say, was a nice step forward.

We had three very competitive
racing cars.

Disappointing,
we didn't win a race.

We're here to win races and
compete for the championship.

So in 2024 that needs
to be the focus.

Going into thermal,
it's a very unique circumstance.

There's big cash available
and Alex Palou

probably needs to bank
as much money as he can

because we have no idea
how this is going to end up,

but he's going to have to pay
at least something.

and IndyCar is going to put
a race on here.

And this is not
the kind of track

that they will race on
at any other time this season.

This weekend here
at Thermal Club

He's been on pace every

I would say that's
the biggest competition.

McLaren are running out
of excuses

as to why they haven't won
in the last little while.

Each are going to be looking
at each other, thinking,

"Man, what do we have to do to
win one of these races?"

It's a shame that we didn't
have a go at it,

but I don't feel bad for Palou
to pay all those lawyer bills.

What next is Long Beach

and I'm due
for a good result there.

- Two races in.
- One race win for Penske.

One race win for Ganassi.

It's kind of the same old
story, isn't it?

Hopefully we get Andretti
winning races,

McLaren winning races.

There's a lot of potential
still out there,

but so far, it's looking like
a repeat of the past.
