[thwack]

[whoosh]

[tense music playing]

[Jason] Okay.

You've already formed the groups
for today's tournament.

THE FIRST GROUP

So... now we begin day two
of the Camelot Cup.

THE SECOND GROUP

The individual competition.

THE THIRD GROUP

[both growling]

THE FOURTH GROUP

THE FIFTH GROUP

THE SIXTH GROUP

THE SEVENTH GROUP

[music fades out]

[descending squeak]

RISING IMPACT

THE 1ST HOLE
"PERILOUS BRIDGE"

[tense music continues]

[Kate] Hmm.

EPISODE 20: MONSTERS

[Lancelot] Nothing very unique about that.

He didn't get that callus
from working on his drive.

Lancelot, show 'em what you got!

Boy, I wish I was in that group
with Lancelot and the man in black.

Hey, little shrimp.

What, lumpy?

- My name is Charles.
- Oh. Well, mine's Gawain.

- Whatever.
- Hmm?

Let's decide the hitting order.

[whistle]

- Huh?
- [tee plonks softly]

[Charles] Okay, that means you go first.

Then, going counterclockwise,
you're second.

- And that means, I'm hitting third.
- What? Did you just make that up?

Oh, never mind!
It's luckier to go first, so I'm good!

- So cute.
- [both] Huh?

I wish I could get that excited
about something as dumb as going first.

- [Charles grunts]
- Huh?

[Charles] I'm not gonna go easy on you two
just because you're little.

- [Gawain] Bring it on, Chucky.
- [Charles] It's Charles!

[girl] Before you can
go "easy" on someone,

you have to be good enough
to beat them, don't you?

[Charles] Hold on.
Did this little girl just insult me?

[girl] Let's all have a fun
and fair match today.

- [tinkling]
- My name is Percival.

Hi. I'm Gawain.

And no offense,
but don't expect me to go easy on you

just 'cause you're a girl.

Oh no. Don't tell me
that you think women are inferior to men.

[Gawain] Well, no, not inferior exactly.

Women can beat men any day of the week.

[Gawain] Yeah, no, certainly.

[jaunty music playing]

So it seems like the first five groups
decided to avoid the bridge.

[Percival] Yeah, that's because
you need a carry distance

of more than 380 yards
to get to the other end of it.

Any shorter
and it'll bounce on the bridge,

and you don't know
where the ball will end up.

If it goes left, that's okay.

But if it goes to the right,
it'll be deep in that forest.

That's why it's the "perilous bridge."

- But you're gonna go for it, aren't you?
- Huh?

[Percival] I saw how far you hit
on the first hole yesterday.

Three hundred eighty yards.

Of course, that might not be far enough.
But you're still gonna go for it, right?

- [music ends]
- Right.

[Gawain] Okay. This is my chance
to really show everybody what I can do.

- [crackling]
- [hum]

I can tell I'm still in top form.

[slow whoosh]

- [resonant clang]
- [screeching whoosh]

[high-pitched thrum]

[pinging]

[rustling]

- [Charles groans]
- I promise, I was not aiming for the bush.

It went beyond the bridge.

Wow. That was a long one,
even for our Gawain.

[chuckles] Not bad, huh?

I'm so impressed!

In fact, I'm so impressed
that I'm excited now.

This is just the kind of competition
I need to bring out my best.

They make a pretty good match,
don't they, Liebel?

Hey. What's with the long face?

I had that girl in my group yesterday.
She wasn't what I expected.

Hey, you should be worried,
not excited. [gasps]

- [thrilling rock music plays]
- [Gawain] Wha... What the heck is that?

A 60-inch driver.

The Camelot Cup has no tournament rules
about club lengths.

[Gawain] I thought
Todoin's 55-inch driver was long.

A 60-inch driver? Seriously?

The longer the club,
the more centrifugal force,

so the greater the distance.

But the farther you are from the ball,
the harder it is to hit.

Can she even swing that thing?

Okay, a slow windup.

She's twisting her body.

Wait. How far can she twist?

She's like a pretzel!

[clang]

[music builds]

[Percival] Go, ball! Go!

Whoa.

[music softens]

[both gasp]

It was drifting wide,
but it swung back in the end.

See? That's the point I was making.
Who said that women are inferior to men?

[Gawain] N-n-not me.

Oh boy. This is gonna be a fun match.

[music ends]

Well, you're up, Charlie.

Yeah, go for it, Chucky.

[groans] Shut up, you pipsqueaks!

[Quester] That girl is unbelievable.

The best most people can do
is twist their body

one full turn when they swing.

She was able to twist another half turn.

She must be incredibly flexible.

[Percival] Mm. So-so.

What'd you say?

[Gawain laughs] Never mind.

[Quester] If she's capable
of hitting a shot like that,

this Percival from the British school
is clearly someone to watch out for.

[Liebel] Good luck, Gawain!

Thanks. You too, Liebel, Quester.

[Percival] You too, Chucky!

[Charles] Humph!
I hope you fall off that bridge!

- [Gawain] Take your time!
- Yak, yak, yak.

- They're a chatty bunch, aren't they?
- [Liebel] Mm.

[Gawain] Talk about impressed.
I couldn't believe that shot of yours.

Do you wanna be
the longest hitter in the world too?

- [Percival] Hitter?
- Yeah.

I wanna hit the ball
farther than anyone ever has.

And I wanna play professionally,

so that I can compete
against the best golfers on the planet.

But I know I have to
improve my overall game first.

[Percival] Then maybe
we're destined to meet again.

Huh?

'Cause that's my goal,
to be the number one golfer on the planet.

And I'm gonna start
by winning this competition.

So the number one
woman golfer in the world, huh?

Yeah, I bet you can do it.

[Percival] Mm-mm.

I wanna be the number one golfer, period.

- Oh.
- [tinkling]

The only thing that men
are stronger at is hitting a drive.

Women are equal to men

when it comes to putting
and approach shots.

And I know that
if I keep working on my drive,

then one day, I'll hit it way farther
than any damn man.

- Oh. I'm sorry. I didn't mean to swear.
- [Gawain] That's okay.

[Percival] Uh, be careful not to break it.

Wow. This is so much longer than my club.

I don't think you have to worry
about your drive.

[chuckles]

- It's already pretty amazing.
- [gasps softly]

Oh. Well, thank you.

[Charles] Hey!

Are you little kids
gonna play golf or not?

[Gawain] Oh, hi! So you made it, huh?

[footsteps]

- [rousing music plays]
- [Charles] I'm already a stroke behind.

Gotta put this one right by the pin.

Luckily, I'm awesome at approach shots.

I don't know.
It might hit the green and keep going.

Not if he puts a backspin on it.

Watch it burn that grass!

Just wait till you see
what my signature Flaming Backspin can...

- [music distorts, stops]
- ...do.

[Charles grumbles]

There's no traction!
It's like playing on concrete!

[Gawain] Whoa.

Tristan said this green was like a mirror.

I can see he was right.

Like a what?
How can a mirror be like a green?

[Percival] It just means
that the green here

is as smooth and hard as a mirror.

[whines] My spin didn't spin.

Don't worry, Chucky.
There's always the next hole.

- Yeah, I think I'll try it.
- [clubs rattle]

- [Charles] You're gonna use that club?
- Yeah.

My pitching wedge
can make it fly about 150 yards.

So if I use this bush as a brake,
that should be just about right.

[stems cracking]

[Gawain] Go!

Nicely done.
Distance and direction look good.

Yeah! That's unbelievable!

He might even hold the green!

Oh, please, please, stop on the green!

Oh. Oh. Oh.

- [boing]
- Dang.

That green, it really is concrete.

[Gawain] It almost bounced
clear off the green.

I think it's like this.

Well, anyway, I'll give it a try
and see what happens.

[dramatic music plays]

[thwack]

What kinda swing is that?

Look at the way her elbow's bent.

[Gawain] Whoa-h*-h*-h*!

- [music stops]
- [Percival] Huh?

[chuckles sheepishly]

- Didn't work.
- [Gawain groans]

What was that supposed to be, Percival?

- [Charles] Wasn't golf, that's for sure.
- That's too bad. I thought I had it.

Tristan makes it look so easy.

- [Gawain humming cheerfully]
- [whimsical music plays]

[Percival] Still, it's a decent start.

By the way, I meant what I said before
about your drive being amazing,

but your approach shots are amazingly bad.

[laughs]

I see. Well, to be honest,
your putting could use some work too.

- But I bogey'd. Who cares about you guys?
- [chuckles]

[Gawain] Look! Butterflies! Butterflies!

[Percival] He doesn't listen very well,
does he?

He's kinda like a butterfly himself.

Isn't this a beautiful spot?

Oh, now I remember.

The name of the second hole
is "Terrestrial Eden."

- [music fades out]
- [birds chirping]

- I don't like the looks of this one.
- What are you talkin' about?

To me, this one looks like
it's gonna be fun!

- Maybe.
- [Gawain] Hmm?

But don't let the pretty scenery fool you.

THE 2ND HOLE

This hole will be a tricky one
to deal with.

Aim straight for the pin

and you're liable to land
in one of those bunkers.

Plus, the height difference
between the tee and cup

makes it hard to judge distance.

And if you hit that cliff on the right,

your ball could fall
into the canyon on the left

or the bunker behind the green.

Okay.

Then how are we gonna play it?

[gasps] Look, it's those guys.
They're just getting to the second hole?

[Percival] They must have
had to wait for their turn.

[Kate] This hole is nothing but hazards.

There's only, like,
one safe route I can take.

[Lancelot] Looks like she noticed.

[Kate] I'd better just
hit it into the bunker,

get it out, and sink it in one putt.

Then at least I'll make par.

[grunts] No. That's the coward's way out.

I've gotta try and birdie on this one.

I've barely kept up with them
by making par on the
first hole.

I've gotta go all out from here on in.

- [suspenseful music playing]
- You can do it, Kate!

[yelps]

No!

Out of bounds!
I should've gone with my first instinct.

- [Lancelot] Take a few deep breaths.
- [Kate grunts]

Try not to be so distracting
to the rest of us.

Yeah, well, who asked you, Lancelot?

[clang]

[whoosh]

He aimed for the bunker,
like I should have!

Huh?

All right! He held the green!

He called it right and hit it perfectly.

Oh, now I see. I should've hit a fade.

[grumbles]

I see why Sfida and Ice
couldn't stop talking about him.

Lancelot?

He's my friend and biggest rival.

He's doin' great, as usual.

Uh-huh.

But still, I doubt
he can keep up with Tristan.

[Lancelot] I still haven't seen the shot

that would account
for the callus on his hand.

[Percival scoffs]

What's wrong? You're not watching?

It's bad for my confidence.

What?

[dramatic music plays]

[clang]

[gasps] What is that bizarre swing?

Percival, that's the same swing you tried.

[Kate murmurs anxiously]

[music crescendoes]

- [ping rings out]
- [music fades out]

- [Charles groans]
- [Kate groans]

[Gawain] That's... That's a hole in one!

He didn't show us
any tricks like that yesterday.

Whoa. That was amazing.

And the guy looked like he knew
it was gonna go in the whole time.

[Percival] Of course he did.

He was going for the hole-in-one.

What? Oh, come on.
No one can be sure they're gonna do that.

[laughing]

Hang on. Wait. Are you serious?

[Percival] Mm.

Whether it's with an approach,
pitching, or sand wedge,

Tristan can sink it in one stroke
from anywhere within 120 yards of the cup.

[Gawain] You're... you're kidding.

[Charles] How could anyone ever beat him?

He's called... "the king of 120 yards."

[Kate shrieks]

You have to retake the shot, right?

[Kate] Oh. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Right, right, right, right.

What did I ever do to get stuck
in a group with these two monsters?

- [clubs rattle]
- [Lancelot] Incredible.

With that weird stroke of his,
he keeps his wrists unflipped,

puts heavy backspin on the ball,

and swings straight up
to control the direction.

Plus, he maximizes
his distance on the impact,

as if he were carrying the ball,
rather than hitting it.

That callus is the result
of some extraordinary training.

I expected the top British player
to be good,

but this goes way beyond that.

[Kate] Mm-mm. [grunts]

[Percival] He's left himself
quite a long putt.

And that green's tricky.

It'll be hard for him to sink it
in less than two strokes.

[Gawain grumbles]

If I know Lancelot,
he'll sink it in one for sure.

[Tristan] That's nearly nine yards,
and the undulation is complicated.

He'll bogey.

[tense music plays]

[ethereal humming, whirring]

[whirring fades out]

Yes, he misjudged the direction.

[all breathing nervously]

[ball clatters]

I knew it. What'd I tell ya?

[grumbles] I suppose you knew
you were gonna make that.

Of course.

You're up.

[Kate] Uh, I know. I know.

[groans]

Triple bogey.

[groans wearily]

[Gawain] Don't let him beat you, Lancelot.

But if he does,
I'll be the one to beat him.

And I'll never... get to be number one,

unless... I beat him too.

[Lancelot] With your skills,
you must have won this last year, right?

And you're expecting
to win again this year?

[Tristan] Winning here
is but a stepping stone.

[Lancelot chuckles] Well, it is exciting.

The individual competition
is providing the kind of challenge

I've never faced before.

[Kate] Hey! Wait for me! That's so rude.

You're not being very sportsmanlike
or gentlemanlike.

Just 'cause their legs
are longer than mine...

[murmurs fearfully]

[nervously] Nice view.

But one false step and kersplat.

[Lancelot] Which group is that?

THE THIRD GROUP

[grumbles]

[suspenseful music plays]

If I'm gonna catch up, now's the time.

[grunts]

- [thwack]
- [grunts]

I messed up.

Seems to be trying a bit too hard.

[rustle]

[murmurs angrily]

[Ice] No choice but to call it unplayable.

[Todoin] I can't lose
this early in the game.

They're counting on me.

[Bilford] Todoin.

- [grunts]
- [music fades out]

Why are you always so obsessed
with winning the Camelot Cup?

[sputters, inhales sharply]

I'm here with the same objective
that the rest of us have.

To be a top pro golfer.

[Todoin grunts]

[Bilford] Needless to say,

winning that cup
would help me achieve that,

but I have another objective too.

- [somber music plays]
- And that's Tristan.

Any golfer of our generation who wants
to reach the top ranks of the sport

will have to get past him.

He's a generational talent.

I had to settle for runner-up,
last year and the year before that,

because, both times,
there was simply no way he was gonna lose.

I finished five strokes behind him
in both matches,

but the gap between our abilities
felt like far more than five strokes.

I remember Tristan was

You and him are monsters, if you ask me.

So anyway, here I am,
competing once again,

but not to be runner-up.

No. I'm here to close that gap
and beat him once and for all.

Because until I do that,

I can't move forward.

So I'm here for my own pride too.

[Todoin grunts]

[music fades out]

[Todoin] I'm pathetic.

[Kuromine] You ready for the UK?

[Todoin] Yeah.
And this time, I'm gonna win.

I'm not gonna let you guys
be humiliated like last year.

[chuckles] You try to hide it,
but you're really a very caring guy.

That's your great strength.
Your weakness too.

Huh? What's that supposed to mean?

[Kuromine] Arai, Hershey, Kanazono,

Lancelot, and all the other kids
at the school,

you're always thinking about them.

But all they're thinking about
is their own future

and what path they should follow
to achieve their dream.

Don't worry about us.

You're the best player in the school.
You need to follow your own path.

[stirring music plays]

Let the rest of us try
and catch up with you if we can.

Take a break.
We've been your burden long enough.

I've never thought of you
as a burden, Kuromine.

[Kuromine] I know.

[chuckles softly]

[wind gusts]

The next time you start to look back
over your shoulder to see how we're doing,

remember what I just said, okay?

[Todoin] I've been a damn fool, Kuromine.

[stirring music continues]

It took me long enough,

but I finally understand what you meant.

Oh, come on. What are you doing?
Have you lost your mind?

- Just say it's unplayable.
- [Bilford] Hmm.

[Kuromine] We've been your burden
long enough.

- [cracking]
- [Todoin grunts]

[both gasp]

[music swells]

[Todoin] I'm not swinging this club
for anyone but me.

He got even closer to the pin
than you did.

[Bilford grunts]

[Todoin] I follow my own path now.

- [Ice grunts]
- [Bilford clears throat]

I shoulda kept my mouth shut.

[clack]

[clanging]

[intriguing music plays]

[Lancelot] He's not quite as accurate

when the distance is longer
than a wedge can handle.

But that doesn't mean he's not good.

- [dramatic music plays]
- He's too good.

[Tristan] I know you're watching.

Once again,
I dedicate this victory to you.

I'm going to keep playing golf.

I'm going to become a pro.

And one day, I swear,
I'll reach the very top.

It's all for you, Dad.

I'm going to make you proud of me.

[music rises, fades out]
