first broadcast - March 2nd 1968

1. LABORATORY

(The DOCTOR, JAMIE, VICTORIA, ANNE, Driver EVANS and the COLONEL watch the two Yeti standing silently. Between the huge piles of fur, the wide-eyed face of Professor TRAVERS appears. When he blinks it is unnaturally slow and deliberate. The onlookers gasp and murmur in disbelief as they see him.)

JAMIE: Oh no!

COLONEL: I just don’t understand what’s happening!

JAMIE: Poor Travers!

(TRAVERS’s expression remains unchanged and his voice is airy, but harsh.)

TRAVERS: Silence!

ANNE: Father!

(She steps forward; the DOCTOR and JAMIE put out their arms to restrain her.)

DOCTOR: No, no! No!

ANNE: But I must-!

(She takes another step and the DOCTOR holds her tighter.)

DOCTOR: No, Anne! Don’t go near him. (Slowly lets go.) Just . . . just listen to him.

(TRAVERS speaks, but the voice has changed again - it is a rasping hiss, the speech halting.)

TRAVERS: (Steps forward.) I . . . am . . . the Intelligence!

(There are cries of shock and denial from the onlookers.)

ANNE: No!

DOCTOR: The Intelligence?

COLONEL: It can’t be!

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Listen to me! I speak to you . . . with this man’s voice . . . because the time has come . . . for you . . . to understand my purpose.

EVANS: What’s he getting at?

COLONEL: Quiet!

DOCTOR: What do you want?

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) You defeated me in Tibet, Doctor.

DOCTOR: Yes.

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Now . . . you have fallen into the trap . . . that I have so carefully prepared for you.

DOCTOR: Oh, I see, so that’s why you’ve brought me here. Revenge!

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Oh, no.

(As he speaks, he steps forward with stiff, jerking movements, hands raised and fingers bent with tension. The group shuffles back and VICTORIA gasps in fear.)

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Revenge . . . is a petty human emotion. (Breathes loudly.) My purpose for you . . . is far more interesting.

DOCTOR: And what’s that?

(TRAVERS’ breathing has become very labored, with a bit of a whine.)

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Through time and space . . . I have observed you, Doctor. Your mind surpasses that of all . . . other creatures.

DOCTOR: (Shouts.) What do you want?

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) You! Your mind will be invaluable to me. Therefore I have invented a machine . . . that will drain all past knowledge . . . and experience from your mind.

VICTORIA: But you’ll k*ll him!

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Oh, no. He will survive, his mind unharmed . . . only empty . . . as a newborn child’s.

DOCTOR: (Nervous.) And if I refuse?

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Then I shall have to seek the help of . . . lesser mortals . . . like your companions here.

(JAMIE and VICTORIA shrink back as he reaches toward them.)

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) And many . . . many others.

DOCTOR: But you can’t!

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) I can . . . and I will.

DOCTOR: (Sadly.) Yes, I . . . I believe you.

JAMIE: You can’t - we’ll fight!

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) That will not do. The Doctor . . . must submit willingly.

DOCTOR: (Breathing rapidly.) And if I- if I do submit, wh- what of the others?

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Then the others will go free.

ANNE: (Hesitantly.) And my father too?

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Oh, him too. I’m only using his body . . . to communicate with you.

ANNE: (Nervously hopeful.) Oh, he- he didn’t help you before, then?

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Oh, no. I have many . . . other . . . human hands at my command.

(ANNE and the DOCTOR smile reassuringly at each other.)

DOCTOR: And who are they?

(TRAVERS’ voice rises slightly in pitch and his breathing becomes more frantic and wheezy in anger.)

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Always questioning! Even now, you’re seeking to destroy me! I see . . . I shall have to guide your thoughts.

(TRAVERS continues to stagger toward them and VICTORIA whimpers, hiding her face behind the DOCTOR’s arm. With a fast, unexpected movement, TRAVERS grabs VICTORIA’s wrist and she cries out in alarm as he pulls her away.)

DOCTOR: Oh no! No!

(JAMIE starts forward, but the DOCTOR jumps in front of him, back turned to the Yeti, and the COLONEL holds him back. The Yeti roar in warning, stepping protectively in front of TRAVERS and VICTORIA.)

DOCTOR: No, Jamie, no!

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) Cooperate and the child will be unharmed.

(VICTORIA continues to whimper softly and the DOCTOR listens, nervous with his back turned.)

TRAVERS: (As the Intelligence.) You have . . . twenty minutes to make up your mind.

(Still holding VICTORIA, he turns to leave, followed by the Yeti. The DOCTOR shouts and strains as JAMIE fights him.)

JAMIE: Let me go, Doctor!

DOCTOR: Jamie, don’t be a fool! You don’t stand a chance!

(The COLONEL helps hold JAMIE as he continues to struggle.)

JAMIE: Let me go! Victoria!

(The COLONEL strides to the door and JAMIE rips himself free of the DOCTOR’s grip, running after the COLONEL. JAMIE tries to grab the COLONEL before he reaches the door, but he shuts it and stands in front of it.)

JAMIE: Let me past, Colonel!

COLONEL: No. The Doctor’s right. There’ve been enough lives wasted.

JAMIE: And what are we going to do? Just sit around and wait for the next thing to happen?

COLONEL: Don’t be a fool, boy! Can’t fight those things bare-handed! We must work out a plan.

(The COLONEL slowly steps away from the door, thinking.)

JAMIE: Well you do what you want - I’m going.

(He opens the door to an ear-splitting roar as the Yeti standing guard turns toward him. The DOCTOR runs to him as he quickly closes the door and its small, barred window.)

DOCTOR: He left one of those things there to stop us getting away. Now, Victoria is quite safe.

JAMIE: (Turns angrily.) Safe?!

DOCTOR: (Calmly.) The Intelligence knows that if it harms her, I won’t cooperate!

ANNE: But does that go for my father too?

DOCTOR: (Faces her.) Yes, Anne, it does.

ANNE: Oh, it- it- . . . . Are you sure?

(The DOCTOR and JAMIE approach her.)

DOCTOR: Yes, I’m sure!

(She smiles hopefully.)

EVANS: Permission to speak, sir.

COLONEL: (Stops pacing.) Eh? Yes, what is it, Evans?

(EVANS slowly approaches the COLONEL and JAMIE, ANNE, and the DOCTOR crowd in after him to listen.)

EVANS: Well, stop me if I’ve got it wrong, sir, but . . . if this Intelligence thing here gets the Doctor, will he leave us all alone?

COLONEL: Yes, that’s what it looks like. What’s in your mind?

EVANS: Well, sir, why don’t we just let it have him?

(The DOCTOR’s eyebrows drop and his mouth opens as he looks at EVANS.)

EVANS: Then we could all go home!

(Everyone looks at the DOCTOR, whose expression doesn’t change.)

2. TUNNEL

(TRAVERS’ possessed body shuffles through the tunnels, pulling VICTORIA along.)

VICTORIA: Please . . . my wrist . . . Professor! Oh! Ooh!

(She tries to pull her arm out of his iron grip. A Yeti follows silently behind. A distant bleeping suddenly starts up in the tunnel ahead.)

VICTORIA: Professor . . . please . . . you’re hurting me! My wrist! Professor!

(TRAVERS is unmoved; he keeps hold and stares blankly ahead, heading towards the bleeps like a zombie. VICTORIA lifts a string of beads off her neck and drops it on the floor as they go. The Yeti walks past it.)

3. LABORATORY

COLONEL: Will this Intelligence keep its word, do you think?

JAMIE: Well it didn’t in Tibet!

(The DOCTOR has the small, clear control box in his hands, and tries to keep JAMIE from talking about it with Driver EVANS in the room.)

DOCTOR: Jamie!

EVANS: Least ways, it’s a chance.

(JAMIE approaches him aggressively.)

JAMIE: But it’s not you that’s taking the risk, is it?

EVANS: I reckon he ought to give himself up now.

COLONEL: Evans! When I want your opinion I’ll ask for it.

EVANS: Sorry, sir.

(The DOCTOR approaches JAMIE and EVANS, still tinkering with the control box.)

DOCTOR: It’s all right, Evans. If I don’t come up with the answer, I will give myself up, I promise.

EVANS: That’s OK then. (Walks away.)

JAMIE: (Grabs the DOCTOR’s shoulder.) You will not give yourself up.

(The DOCTOR looks up from his work.)

DOCTOR: (Harshly.) Don’t be foolish, Jamie!

JAMIE: But Victoria!

DOCTOR: She will be your responsibility. And when it’s all over, you’ll just both have to look after me, that’s all.

(He turns back to the control box and EVANS listens at the door in the background.)

JAMIE: Eh?

DOCTOR: Well, if what the Intelligence says is true, my mind will be like that of a child.

(JAMIE looks horrified.)

DOCTOR: You’ll have to look after me un- until I grow up.

JAMIE: (Rubs jaw.) Oh . . . .

DOCTOR: Don’t worry, I- I’m going to try not to let it happen.

EVANS: Hey! Wait a minute!

(The DOCTOR and JAMIE quickly turn to him. The COLONEL approaches from across the room.)

COLONEL: (Annoyed.) What is it, Evans, what’s the matter now?

EVANS: Stand back everyone!

(He quickly opens the door and the COLONEL steps back. EVANS and JAMIE look down the corridor, then simultaneously turn to look at the COLONEL. The Yeti guard has gone.)

EVANS: I thought I heard it go!

COLONEL: Yes, well we’d better make sure. Evans - you, myself and McCrimmon will go and search the place. Doctor, you’d better stay behind here and get on with your tinkering.

(The DOCTOR immediately returns to work on the gadget in his hands as he slowly walks back to the work bench. The COLONEL, JAMIE, and EVANS quickly leave. The DOCTOR takes a deep breath and starts turning the box, picking at the wires inside with his fingers. ANNE, watching him, comes around to the front.)

ANNE: You’re not seriously thinking of giving yourself up to those creatures, are you?

DOCTOR: Well I sincerely hope it won’t come to that, Anne.

ANNE: It’s so hopeless. What can we do?

DOCTOR: (Tapping it.) This control box - we’ve got to get it working!

ANNE: Doctor, we’ve only got twenty minutes.

DOCTOR: Then there’s no time to lose, is there? Oh come on, Anne, don’t give up. I need your help!

ANNE: (Smiles.) Yes, yes of course.

(She turns toward the bench, ready to help.)

DOCTOR: Right. Now hand me that sphere, will you?

(He holds up his hands and ANNE gives him the opened sphere.)

4. OPERATIONS ROOM

JAMIE: Suppose that Yeti was left there as a kind of rearguard?

COLONEL: Possibly.

(JAMIE leans against the desk, Driver EVANS stands in front of the map of the tunnels, and the COLONEL joins him, a baton under his arm.)

JAMIE: If we went into the tunnels, we’d run into them again.

COLONEL: Yes, probably would.

JAMIE: (Waving finger in an arc.) But supposing we were to go over the top? (Approaches and points at the COLONEL.) You see, Colonel, as I see it, there’s only one way for them to go - south.

COLONEL: Yes?

JAMIE: So if we could get there ahead of them . . . .

COLONEL: What, take them by surprise, you mean?

JAMIE: Aye!

COLONEL: What’s the point? You can’t fight those things. I know, I’ve tried.

EVANS: Anyway, we’d never get back in, sir. All the stations are locked.

JAMIE: We might find one that’s open. I mean, after all, the Yeti get in and out - why can’t we?

EVANS: Well, reckon we’re safer here, sir.

JAMIE: (Challenging.) Aye, we are. But what about Victoria and Travers, eh? Oh, if you’re both too scared, I’ll go myself!

(JAMIE waves his hand angrily and quickly heads off.)

COLONEL: Wait a minute, McCrimmon!

(JAMIE stops as he opens the door. The COLONEL and EVANS approach.)

COLONEL: I think it’s pointless, but at least we’ll be doing something active.

EVANS: What about the Doctor and Miss Travers, sir?

COLONEL: Oh, yes. Mustn’t leave them unprotected. You stay here, Evans.

(JAMIE walks off.)

EVANS: Right, sir.

COLONEL: And don’t go taking any chances!

(The COLONEL follows JAMIE and EVANS watches them go.)

EVANS: (Chuckling to himself.) Don’t worry, I won’t!

5. LABORATORY

(The DOCTOR is explaining his additions to ANNE’s control box, pointing them out with a pair of tweezers, while ANNE watches, crouched beside him.)

DOCTOR: And the cross wire’s here. Hmm?

ANNE: I still don’t see how you can-

DOCTOR: (Interrupts.) Well, I haven’t finished yet. Now if you detach the germanium crystal strip here, hm? And then attach the collector and the emitter.

(ANNE hums in comprehension as he speaks, and gasps when she understands.)

ANNE: Yes, yes, and link up there - of course! (Stands.) Then the frequency variations, they’ll automatically change!

DOCTOR: Simple?

ANNE: Yes!

DOCTOR: Right. You get on with that.

ANNE: OK.

DOCTOR: And I’ll just check this sphere.

(He gently picks up the opened control sphere and examines it carefully as ANNE bends over the control box.)

DOCTOR: Yes . . . yes, that should complete the circuit, good . . . . (Looks up.) I wonder . . . .

(With those words, as he thinks, his eyes dart side to side just like the First Doctor. It’s comforting to see a bit of 1 still in there.)

6. SURFACE ENTRANCE

(The door from the Fortress to the surface is closed. JAMIE and the COLONEL stand against the door, listening.)

JAMIE: There’s only one way to find out.

COLONEL: Yes. Certainly no sound out there.

JAMIE: Shall we chance it, then?

COLONEL: Why not?

(JAMIE steps back and the COLONEL unlocks the door.)

COLONEL: Now!

(The COLONEL throws open the door. Covering the entrance is a thick wall of billowing, glowing fungus!)

JAMIE: No! Back! No!

(They throw themselves against the door as the fungus starts to burst in.)

COLONEL: Push! Push!

(The door slowly closes against the huge weight of fungus.)

COLONEL: Push, hard as you can!

(Slowly but surely, the door closes on the powerful mass.)

COLONEL: Push, get your back to it! Get your back to it!

(The two men both turn their backs against the door and hold it shut. The fungus continues to fight, jostling the door just enough that they can’t latch it.)

COLONEL: Fire door - by the stairs - go and unhitch it, and I’ll try to hold this. Go on, McCrimmon!

JAMIE: You sure?

COLONEL: Yes, go on! Go on!

(JAMIE races back down the corridor and down a flight of spiral stairs. The COLONEL struggles to hold the door against the mass of fungus. After a moment, JAMIE shouts back.)

JAMIE: [OOV.] All right, Colonel, come on!

(The COLONEL psyches himself for a moment, then lets go and sprints down the corridor. The door bursts open and the fungus glows, ready to engulf the corridor.)

7. LABORATORY

(While ANNE works on an electronic box in the corner, the DOCTOR watches the reassembled control sphere on the workbench.)

DOCTOR: Strange, it- it’s not picking up.

(He bends down and turns his ear to the sphere.)

DOCTOR: The Intelligence must be transmitting. (Scowls at it.) I wonder why it’s not working.

(He straightens and stares at it in frustration for a moment. He raises his hand and thumps the bench just beside the sphere, which immediately starts bleeping and rolling slowly across the bench. He spreads his arms and claps them together.)

DOCTOR: Aha! Success! It’s going, Anne!

(He chuckles deeply as he steps to the side of the bench to wait for the sphere.)

ANNE: Oh, oh that’s marvellous.

(The DOCTOR claps gently and wiggles his fingers toward the sphere.)

DOCTOR: (To sphere.) Come along.

ANNE: I’m sorry I’m being so long - this is such a fiddling job.

(As she speaks, the sphere edges toward the end of the bench and the DOCTOR wiggles his fingers excitedly.)

DOCTOR: Help you in a minute . . . .

(He picks up the sphere as it reaches the edge and sets it on the floor.)

DOCTOR: There we are. Now then . . . .

(The DOCTOR steps back and the sphere rolls across the floor toward the door.)

DOCTOR: (Points with both hands.) Yes, you see, it’s homing!

(ANNE watches with a smile. The DOCTOR clears his throat and picks up the sphere, putting it down a few feet back.)

DOCTOR: There we are.

(It resumes rolling toward the door.)

DOCTOR: Fairly strongly.

(He claps his hands and cackles with glee. The door opens and JAMIE and the COLONEL walk in; the DOCTOR reacts frantically.)

JAMIE: Doctor!

DOCTOR: Careful - shut the door!

COLONEL: Sorry.

(JAMIE closes the door before the sphere can escape and ANNE comes over.)

ANNE: The sphere! The sphere, it’s working.

JAMIE: (Waving his arm.) Never mind about that.

DOCTOR: Why, what’s happened?

JAMIE: We tried to get out the surface door, but the fungus is there!

DOCTOR: Well, I’m not surprised - I thought the Intelligence would try to hem us in.

COLONEL: Yes, unfortunately it’s got into HQ.

ANNE: What?

COLONEL: Now don’t worry. Managed to get a fire door closed. Should hold it.

ANNE: I hope you’re right.

DOCTOR: Come on, Anne, we must get to work.

(He picks up the sphere and ANNE follows him to the bench with the control box.)

COLONEL: Doctor, tell me, this sphere of yours. Exactly how’s it going to help us?

DOCTOR: Well the sphere itself - it won’t.

JAMIE: Eh?

DOCTOR: No. But it will help us to test the control box.

JAMIE: Is that all?

DOCTOR: (Offended.) All?

JAMIE: You mean to say you’ve wasted all this time, just to-?

DOCTOR: (Interrupts angrily.) Wasted - we haven’t been wasting our time!

JAMIE: Well I think you have!

COLONEL: Must agree with the boy, Doctor. You don’t seem to have achieved very much.

ANNE: (Fed up with the arguing.) Colonel, if you left us alone we’d get along a lot quicker.

(JAMIE sighs in frustration and the DOCTOR’s mouth is very crooked.)

COLONEL: Huh? Oh, very well. Come on, McCrimmon, we’ll leave them to it.

(He leaves with JAMIE, who is still sighing, and shuts the door.)

DOCTOR: Right, Anne. Let’s get on with this control box.

(He puts the control sphere down on the bench and picks up ANNE’s control box. He looks at the control sphere, still bleeping as it rolls, and can’t help laughing.)

8. OPERATIONS ROOM

(Driver EVANS waits just inside the door to the Operations Room, flat against the wall. JAMIE and the COLONEL enter the room.)

COLONEL: Right, let’s have a look at this board.

(EVANS slams the door shut behind them and they spin to face him as he raises his r*fle.)

COLONEL: Evans! What exactly do you think you’re playing at?

EVANS: Been working it out, I have, see. Come to the conclusion one of you two must be working for this Intelligence.

JAMIE: Oh for heaven’s sake!

EVANS: No! It told us it had another pair of hands working for it. Well I know it’s not me, see, so it must be one of you two. Stands to reason, dunnit?

JAMIE: Oh, don’t be daft, man, it’s Chorley! (Gesturing for emphasis.) I’ve said so all along.

EVANS: Well, it’s only natural you’d say that, innit?

COLONEL: I don’t know what you’re talking about, Evans, and quite frankly I don’t care. Now McCrimmon and I are going out into the tunnels. You’d better join the Doctor and Miss Travers.

(The COLONEL knocks EVANS’ g*n away and walks past him.)

EVANS: If it’s all the same to you, sir, I’d prefer to stay here.

COLONEL: Evans, I gave you an order.

EVANS: A better position here, sir - keep an eye on the corridors, I can. Better tactically, don’t you think, sir?

(The COLONEL pushes open the door and walks out. JAMIE gives EVANS a look as he follows. EVANS looks proud of himself.)

9. PLATFORM, PICCADILLY

(A Yeti with a web g*n stands guard over VICTORIA and TRAVERS, who is still holding her wrist firmly and standing motionless, as if in a trance.)

VICTORIA: P- please, Professor, let me go. I won’t try to escape. Oh, please!

(Suddenly the raucous whispering voice of the Intelligence sounds, seemingly from all around her.)

INTELLIGENCE: Release her, Professor.

(VICTORIA looks around in fear and TRAVERS lets go of her wrist.)

INTELLIGENCE: As she says, she will not escape. There is nothing for you to be afraid of, child.

(VICTORIA slowly walks in front of TRAVERS to his other side, tense with fear.)

VICTORIA: Isn’t there? Oh! Where are you?

INTELLIGENCE: Nearby.

VICTORIA: Wh . . . why don’t you show yourself?

INTELLIGENCE: All in good time.

(VICTORIA takes a breath, as if to scream, but holds it back.)

INTELLIGENCE: (Harshly.) TRAVERS! You have served your purpose. Awake!

(TRAVERS squeezes his eyes shut and falls to his knees. VICTORIA goes to his side as he breathes heavily.)

INTELLIGENCE: Soon you will both see me.

(TRAVERS holds his head as he tries to gather his senses. He speaks dazedly, but his voice is again his own.)

TRAVERS: (Mumbling.) Where am I? What’s happened? Erm . . . where are we?

(VICTORIA holds him steady as he wobbles.)

VICTORIA: (Nervous.) Er . . . I think you’d better rest for a bit.

TRAVERS: Rest? No, oh no. Work to do. I’ve got to help the Doctor!

(He suddenly catches sight of the Yeti guard and holds perfectly still.)

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) Don’t run, Victoria, but there’s a Yeti, over there, on the platform.

VICTORIA: (Frightened) I know.

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) Yes, well we’ll try and give it the slip-. (Looks hard at her.) What did you say?

VICTORIA: I know. That’s the one that brought us here.

TRAVERS: What?

(TRAVERS holds his head, trying to work it out, and VICTORIA moans in pity for him.)

TRAVERS: Well, come on, Victoria.

(He takes her wrist and creeps along the platform, away from the motionless Yeti. VICTORIA follows hesitantly. TRAVERS sits on the edge of the platform and slips off, then waits for VICTORIA to hop down. Surprised and filled with hope that the Yeti doesn’t seem to care, they begin to run. VICTORIA screams as she barely stops herself from running into another Yeti. The giant creature raises its arm and roars a savage warning.)

10. LABORATORY

(The sphere, still bleeping across the floor, finally bumps into the door. ANNE monitors it while the DOCTOR works on the control box.)

ANNE: Doctor . . . Doctor, do hurry!

DOCTOR: Nearly ready.

(He fits all the wires inside and closes the clear box inside its wooden casing.)

DOCTOR: There. (Clears throat.) Now then, let’s see if it works.

(The DOCTOR holds the control box at arm’s length and flicks a switch, watching the sphere expectantly. The sphere doesn’t respond, still trying feebly to ram the door. The DOCTOR flips the switch repeatedly. The sphere continues bleeping.)

ANNE: Isn’t it at full power?

DOCTOR: Yes.

ANNE: (Shakes her head.) Then we’ve failed.

DOCTOR: No, hang on a minute.

(He moves closer to the sphere, still flicking the switch. Each time he flicks the switch, he steps closer. He finally bends down to the sphere, holding the box only two or three feet away. When he flips the switch, the sphere suddenly stops bleeping.)

DOCTOR: Aha!

ANNE: (Clasps hands.) Oh, it works!

(The DOCTOR laughs deeply.)

DOCTOR: Back you come.

(He backs off and the sphere slowly rolls towards him. He gives the control box to ANNE and picks up the control sphere.)

DOCTOR: Yes, the trouble is, it only works at very short range.

ANNE: But still, that’s better than nothing.

DOCTOR: Hmm.

ANNE: So now what do we do?

(They move back to the bench.)

DOCTOR: (Tapping the control box.) Well, we know that your control box can stop a Yeti.

ANNE: Mm-hm.

DOCTOR: (Tapping the control sphere.) Now then, if I can re-program this sphere to obey our verbal commands, hm?

ANNE: Yes, but can we do it? I mean, in the time?

DOCTOR: How long have we got?

(ANNE looks at her watch.)

ANNE: Twelve minutes.

(The DOCTOR grunts as he examines the sphere.)

11. TUNNEL

(JAMIE and the COLONEL, p*stol raised, edge carefully through the tunnels. The COLONEL stops at a junction and glances down both tunnels.)

COLONEL: Do we go on or turn back?

JAMIE: Let’s go on.

COLONEL: Right.

(The COLONEL leads the way down one of the turnings, then stops and turns as he realises JAMIE hasn’t followed him.)

COLONEL: Come on, what are you waiting for?

(He waits as JAMIE approaches.)

JAMIE: What made you choose this turning, Colonel?

COLONEL: What? Well, I don’t know really. Why?

(JAMIE is silent, giving the COLONEL his signature stare of distrust.)

COLONEL: You’re not still thinking about what Evans said, are you?

JAMIE: Well, he was right about one thing. One of us is working with the Intelligence.

COLONEL: I can assure you it’s not me, McCrimmon.

JAMIE: Aye, maybe so.

(They look at each other suspiciously for a moment, then the COLONEL grunts and leads off. JAMIE follows, then stops as he sees something lying between the rails.)

JAMIE: (Harsh whisper.) Hey, wait a minute!

(He picks up VICTORIA’s string of beads.)

JAMIE: (Harsh whisper.) This is Victoria’s! (Points at it.) We’re on the right track!

(He follows the COLONEL.)

12. PLATFORM, PICCADILLY

(TRAVERS and VICTORIA have returned to the platform and sit together against a large, metal sand bin, still guarded by the Yeti. They have calmed down considerably, but the atmosphere is still tense. TRAVERS anxiously fingers a pen sticking out of his pocket.)

TRAVERS: Anne’s all right, you say?

VICTORIA: (Sounding uncertain.) Don’t worry, Professor. The Doctor’s bound to come up with something.

TRAVERS: I wish I shared your confidence, my dear.

(He looks up and notices a Yeti starting to move.)

TRAVERS: Hello, what’s happening?

(One of the two Yeti guards turns and walks away. TRAVERS pretends to be uninterested and turns his head away. Out of the corner of his eye, he spots a figure just around the corner into the tunnel. It is Staff Sergeant ARNOLD, clothes draped with webs and his face covered in dirt, Fl*ttening himself against the wall of the tunnel. TRAVERS creeps to the edge of the platform and repeatedly looks to make sure the Yeti doesn’t notice.)

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) Arnold! How’d you get here! I thought - well Victoria said . . . .

ARNOLD: (Whispers.) What? What’s happened, sir?

TRAVERS: Sssh! Just a moment . . . .

(He watches the Yeti, which still stands motionless.)

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) Do you think you can get to HQ?

ARNOLD: (Whispers.) I can try, sir.

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) Yeah, well get hold of the Doctor, and tell him where we are.

ARNOLD: (Whispers.) Right, sir.

(He quietly sneaks back down, along the wall of the tunnel, keeping an eye on the Yeti. TRAVERS moves back to VICTORIA.)

VICTORIA: Can’t we go with him?

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) No, Victoria. That Yeti’s guarding us. if we go, it’ll follow. I don’t think they’ve found out about Arnold yet.

(The Yeti turns toward them.)

13. OUTSIDE OPERATIONS ROOM

(A bleeping control sphere rolls across the tiled floor of a corridor, and goes through the door to the Operations Room.)

14. OPERATIONS ROOM

(Driver EVANS sits with his r*fle on his lap. He hears the beep and looks around nervously, unable to determine its source. He finally spots it, slowly rolling closer, and quietly stands up on his chair, keeping the r*fle pointed straight at the sphere.)

DOCTOR: No, don’t sh**t!

(The DOCTOR and ANNE run into the room, but EVANS doesn’t move his r*fle.)

EVANS: Is that thing on our side, then?

DOCTOR: It is now.

(The DOCTOR uncovers something in his hand; a small microphone, and speaks into it.)

DOCTOR: Stop!

(The sphere stops bleeping and rolls to a stop. The DOCTOR smiles at EVANS’ expression, holding the microphone proudly. EVANS looks at him, shocked.)

DOCTOR: Were you scared?

EVANS: Eh? Oh no, no, I mean, I just got up here to get a better aim, that’s all. How did you make it stop then?

DOCTOR: Simple - I told it to. (Mouth goes crooked.)

(EVANS just looks at him, then at ANNE, then at the sphere on the floor. He finally raises his g*n and steps off the chair. The DOCTOR and ANNE move to get a better view as EVANS kneels in front of the sphere.)

EVANS: Here - ball. (Points with thumb.) Why don’t you go back where you come from?

(He looks at the DOCTOR, whose mouth is still crooked, and stands.)

EVANS: Now, pull the other one.

ANNE: Oh, show him, Doctor.

DOCTOR: All right, I will. (Into microphone.) Move forward.

(The sphere bleeps and obeys.)

DOCTOR: Stop.

(It stops bleeping, but takes a moment to stop rolling.)

DOCTOR: Move to the left.

(Apparently unable to suddenly switch direction, it slowly curves to the DOCTOR’s left. The DOCTOR chuckles gleefully.)

DOCTOR: Stop.

(The sphere obeys.)

DOCTOR: There you are, how about that?

EVANS: (Laughing.) Hey, that’s great! Make a smashing toy, that would.

(The DOCTOR’s grin immediately turns to a frown.)

ANNE: Toy? That’s a highly complex piece of equipment.

(The DOCTOR clears his throat, hands folded.)

EVANS: Oh, is it? Well I don’t see how it’s going to help us.

DOCTOR: (Points with hands folded.) But it obeys our commands!

EVANS: So?

DOCTOR: (Smiling.) Well, once we get it inside a Yeti, it- we’ll have a powerful ally!

EVANS: (Disbelief.) Inside a Yeti?

ANNE: Yes, certainly. Will you help us?

EVANS: You must be joking! Go near one of them things? I may be stupid, but I’m not daft.

DOCTOR: Oh very well, Anne, I shall have to do it myself. (Bends down and picks up sphere.)

ANNE: Oh, I’m coming with you, Doctor.

(He quickly moves toward the door, but stops.)

DOCTOR: No no, it’s far too dangerous.

EVANS: There you are, what’d I tell you?

(ANNE pats the DOCTOR’s shoulder as she walks past him.)

ANNE: Not another word, I’m coming with you.

(They leave EVANS behind, who blows his breath out.)

15. TUNNEL

(The COLONEL and JAMIE are still creeping through the tunnels. The COLONEL puts a hand in front of JAMIE.)

COLONEL: Hold it.

(They listen for a moment. A figure staggers out of the shadows ahead, dragging his feet, arm raised weakly for help. Recognizing him, JAMIE and the COLONEL move toward him.)

COLONEL: Staff Arnold?

(Staff Sergeant ARNOLD grips the COLONEL’s shoulder and the COLONEL helps him stand, holding his arm.)

COLONEL: It can’t be, we’d given you up for lost!

(ARNOLD begins to sink and the COLONEL and JAMIE help him down to his knees.)

JAMIE: Easy, easy . . . . That’s it.

ARNOLD: (Breath trembling.) Sorry about this, sir.

JAMIE: What happened?

ARNOLD: I don’t know. Can’t remember. (Squeezes eyes shut, then opens them.) I were pushing the trolley through the fungus, and . . . and I blacked out. I th- I thought I were . . . falling. When I come to, sir, I were in the tunnels . . . . Where’s the Doctor, sir?

(His arm tenses on the COLONEL’s shoulder in his urgency and the COLONEL helps him stand.)

ARNOLD: I met the Professor and the girl back there-

JAMIE: (Interrupts.) Victoria! Is she all right?

(JAMIE doesn’t take his eyes off the direction VICTORIA must be. ARNOLD begins to fall backward, but the COLONEL holds him up with a firm grip on his arm.)

ARNOLD: Yeti - guarding them, but . . . I promised I’d tell the Doctor, sir.

(He sways with exhaustion, breathing heavily.)

COLONEL: Right. Come on, back to HQ.

JAMIE: I’m going for Victoria.

COLONEL: Really, we’d stand a better chance if we stick together. Go ahead!

(JAMIE takes another look down the tunnel toward VICTORIA, then turns and leads in front. The COLONEL pulls ARNOLD’S arm over his shoulders.)

COLONEL: Come on, Staff.

(The COLONEL supporting ARNOLD, they mutter to each other as they head back toward Goodge Street.)

16. PLATFORM, PICCADILLY

(TRAVERS looks at his watch and grunts.)

TRAVERS: Doctor’s twenty minutes almost up.

(Two bleeping noises start up at the same time, at different pitches. VICTORIA looks over nervously.)

VICTORIA: (Whispers.) Professor . . . ?

(The Yeti that had left has come back, and they both slowly approach VICTORIA and TRAVERS.)

VICTORIA: Oh . . . !

(The Yeti stop in front of them and growl. VICTORIA and TRAVERS stand up. They pass tensely between the Yeti, TRAVERS holding VICTORIA’s shoulders. The Yeti turn to lead them across the platform.)

VICTORIA: (Whispers.) Where are they taking us?

TRAVERS: (Whispers.) Now keep calm, Victoria. I’m sure the Doctor will think of something.

VICTORIA: Oh . . . !

17. OUTSIDE OPERATIONS ROOM

(EVANS walks quietly down a corridor, looking around cautiously. He hears footsteps ahead and slips around the doorway into the Operations Room.)

18. OPERATIONS ROOM

(EVANS quietly walks into the Operations Room, looking for a place to hide. He steps behind the map of the London Underground, which shows only a small stretch around Goodge Street still clear of the fungus. He has chosen the worst hiding place as his entire lower half can be seen below the map. The COLONEL strides into the room, followed by JAMIE helping Staff Sergeant ARNOLD. They approach the map, immediately spotting EVANS.)

COLONEL: (Exhausted.) Evans, come out from behind that board.

(EVANS slowly peers around the map.)

EVANS: Oh, it’s you, sir.

COLONEL: Where’s the Doctor?

(EVANS slowly steps toward him, pointing, obviously trying to come up with a lie or excuse.)

COLONEL: (Snaps furiously.) Evans!

EVANS: B-b-but y-y-y-you-you-you . . . .

ARNOLD: Stop bleating like a Welsh baa-lamb, Evans, and answer the Colonel.

EVANS: (Submissive.) Sir?

COLONEL: Doctor and Miss Travers, where are they?

EVANS: Gone, sir.

JAMIE: Gone - where?

EVANS: Warren Street, I think.

JAMIE: Why?

EVANS: After a Yeti, they said.

(JAMIE looks at ARNOLD, horrified, and the COLONEL mutters in disbelief.)

ARNOLD: (Points.) Look at the board, sir. Warren Street.

JAMIE: (Pats ARNOLD.) Come on!

(He runs off. ARNOLD follows, but the COLONEL stops him.)

COLONEL: No, not you, Staff. Evans, make yourself useful. Get a dressing for the Staff Sergeant’s head.

EVANS: Yes, sir.

ARNOLD: Thank you, sir.

(The COLONEL and EVANS quickly leave and ARNOLD takes a breath to calm down.)

19. TUNNEL

(ANNE and the DOCTOR, holding his control sphere, stare through a web-like wall of fungus as it pulses and sways gently.)

DOCTOR: Do you think it’s mutating, Anne?

ANNE: I . . . I don’t know, but I don’t think we’ll stay and find out.

DOCTOR: No, perhaps you’re right.

(He clears his throat as they walk the other way. They both stop short, the DOCTOR holding the sphere close to his chest. The DOCTOR looks back and ANNE grabs his arm.)

ANNE: We’re trapped!

(A Yeti in the tunnel ahead advances with a roar and begins beeping.)

DOCTOR: (Calmly.) Give me the control box, Anne.

(He wiggles his fingers as she searches her pockets, trying to stay calm.)

ANNE: The control box . . . .

DOCTOR: Yes.

ANNE: (Beginning to panic.) Oh, haven’t you got it, Doctor?

DOCTOR: What! Huh . . . . (Frantically pats pockets.) Hold the sphere!

(ANNE takes it and he searches his pockets, breathing rapidly as the Yeti draws closer.)

ANNE: Oh Doctor, you must have it!

DOCTOR: Yes, yes, got it.

(He pulls the control box out from a pocket and turns it over, searching for the correct switch. He holds up the box and flips the switch. He sighs and keeps it in the air as the Yeti bears down on them. It raises its arm.)

ANNE: (Terrified.) Doctor!

DOCTOR: Don’t worry, it’ll work! Heh . . . . (Panicked.) It’s got to work!

(The Yeti begins to roar, but the sound dies down as it halts. For a moment, the only sound is the Yeti’s bleeping, then even that stops. ANNE gasps with relief and the DOCTOR slowly lowers the control box with a smile.)

ANNE: I know you said it only worked at short range, but for a moment . . . .

DOCTOR: Well, don’t tell me you were worried?

(A moment of silence passes while ANNE realizes she’s holding tight to the DOCTOR, her arm over his shoulders, and lets go, muttering in embarrassment.)

DOCTOR: Would you like to hold this for me?

(He gives ANNE the control box and steps toward the now lifeless Yeti, flipping a screwdriver out of his pocket.)

DOCTOR: Now then . . . .

(He lifts up the flap and jams the screwdriver into the compartment. He wrenchess the screwdriver harder and harder, struggling to pop the control sphere out. ANNE watches, worried.)

DOCTOR: It’s all right, it’s quite safe.

(He works the screwdriver so hard it looks as if it should break.)

DOCTOR: Nearly out . . . . There.

(The sphere drops into his hand and he swaps it with the one ANNE is holding.)

DOCTOR: Right.

(He shoves it into the compartment and closes the flap of fur. He looks up with a sigh of satisfaction and lifts the small microphone hanging from a string around his neck to his mouth.)

DOCTOR: Now then - turn round!

(The DOCTOR laughs with that deep growl of his and claps gleefully as the Yeti obeys. They both run around to the front.)

ANNE: Oh, it works! You’ve done it!

DOCTOR: We’ve done it, you mean! Now then, (Clears throat.) with my reprogrammed sphere and your control box, we should be able to work him over quite a distance. (To the Yeti.) And put your arm down!

(The Yeti does so. The DOCTOR can’t help but chuckle again and ANNE laughs.)

DOCTOR: Now we’ve got a chance, Anne. Come on!

(The two of them move off; the YETI stays motionless. The DOCTOR taps ANNE’s back as he stops and turns.)

DOCTOR: Oh, mustn’t forget him. (Into microphone.) Come on, Fred, at the double!

(They laugh again as Fred bleeps and follows them.)

20. OPERATIONS ROOM

(Staff Sergeant ARNOLD grimaces and pulls his head away as Driver EVANS dabs a wound on his forehead with a cotton ball.)

EVANS: Hold still, can’t you?

ARNOLD: Oh come on, Evans, get on wi’ it!

(EVANS places a plaster over ARNOLD’s wound and admires his handiwork proudly.)

EVANS: Hey oh, I reckon I ought to have been a doctor. Real professional, that is.

ARNOLD: (Smiles patronizingly.) All right then, doctor. Take your gear back to the lab.

(He picks up the first aid kit and places it in EVANS’ hands.)

EVANS: Oh, righto then. (Turns.)

ARNOLD: And when you’ve done that, you can come back and shift that chair.

(EVANS walks away with a frustrated sigh. ARNOLD stands and approaches the map, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.)

EVANS: [OOV.] (Frightened.) Staff! Staff!

ARNOLD: (Turns.) What is it?

(He runs out.)

21. FORTRESS MAIN CORRIDOR

(Staff Sergeant ARNOLD comes running around the corner and runs to the Laboratory.)

ARNOLD: What is it, Evans?

22. LABORATORY

(Driver EVANS stands by the door, staring across the room, as ARNOLD runs in to join him. ARNOLD stops and shrinks back, squinting his eyes at the light. Cracks in the far wall glow, then the wall breaks inward, shoving tables and chairs out of the way as glowing fungus pours in. ARNOLD grabs EVANS and pushes him out.)

ARNOLD: Go on, Evans lad, get out of it!

23. FORTRESS MAIN CORRIDOR

(EVANS turns and runs out the damaged door into the tunnels, closely followed by ARNOLD.)

24. LABORATORY

(The floor is covered in glowing, bubbly fungus, tables overturned and engulfed, and a smoky haze begins to fill the air . . . .)
