01x01 - Haenam Temple Stay

Post by bunniefuu »

There was a surge of wanderers
in late 19th-century France.

They abandoned their jobs, families,

and even lost themselves...

as they indulged in travels.

This condition, dubbed dromomania,

pathological tourism, and wanderlust...

spread across Europe like an epidemic.

And those who bolted to the road
were called "mad wanderers."

Was it indeed madness that
fueled these trips?

Or was it the dread
of losing their minds in life...

that made them leave?

Today, we unravel Kim Ki Rim's
"The Butterfly and the Sea."

The deep sea and what lurks beneath...

illustrate a harsh and callous reality.

What does the first stanza imply?

It represents the longing for a new world.

This butterfly is yet to fathom
the menacing sea.

The author is disheartened by reality...

When longing to disappear,
I take one-day trips.

I walk, eat, and let my mind wander.

(Lee Na Young)

(The Dancing Kangaroo)

(It's been a fun trip. Park Ha Kyung)

(One Day Off)

(Episode 1
Unshackling the Mind)

Is this the wrong stop or what?

(Shortest route
42 minutes, 2.8 kilometers)

My goodness, I got off at the wrong stop.

(Haenam, Saturday 10:05 a.m.)

One, two.

- Go ahead.
- Feel free to pass by.

- Go ahead.
- You can go ahead.

How about we take a snap together?

I want to knock it over.

Hello. Can you help me?

(Noble Silence
I'm facing my inner self.)

I see.

Ms. Park.

I thought you had fallen into a ditch
when you didn't come.

You're here for a temple stay, right?

No.

I mean...

Yes, I'm here for that.

What?

I signed up, but not for the night.

Are you going to leave today?

- Yes.
- Why?

I just feel like it.

This way, if you look to the right,

it's the main hall of our temple.

I understand that it must be
restored in such a way,

but now it's not as beautiful.

If you had visited before,

it would have taken your breath away.

Even if there were only pillars.

Do you happen to laugh a lot?

The head monk told me that
I hardly ever laugh...

when laughter is what can
dissolve my worries.

So, I've been practicing.

Help me decide which laugh looks natural.

First.

Second.

Third.

Which one is better?

The second one.

The second one?

Your room is this way.

The plaque says, "Devote."

That is our Whitey.

The dog's heart is pure white.

He is spotless without a thought.

Hello. You stay comfortable.

Your place is up here.

Thank you.

Judging by how you packed lightly,

you must have traveled frequently.

When I first came to this temple,

I carried a 45 liters backpack.

It was a colossal thing bigger than me,

packed with everything imaginable.

But I didn't need any of it.

You become greedy when packing your stuff,

but it ends up on your shoulders.

There is true enlightenment in Budda

There is true enlightenment in Budda

May all the souls be at peace

I wish to leave all my sufferings
for enlightenment

What's this?

Why does it taste so good?

Are you having your meal?

Slouching is bad for your back.

Our yoga master can show you.

According to our expert,

nothing poses a greater threat
than sitting slumped.

That slowly kills you.

First, pull in your right leg.

Then place your left on top.

Go ahead, give it a try.

Right now.

Pull in your right leg.

- The left on top.
- All right.

Now straighten your spine
and stretch your arms.

Come up. Eat in that exact position.

What do you do for work?

I'm a teacher.

You teach at an elementary school?

- High school.
- That's hard work.

Teens are tough these days.

Aren't they a lot more work
than they were back in our day?

They're not the only ones that are.

This guy is an author.

I hear he wrote a famous novel.

What was the book called?

So you're a novelist.

What subject do you teach?

Korean Literature.

You teach Korean Literature?

The head monk loves his work...

and allowed him to stay for two months.

For no charge.

Two months is both long and short.

But he hasn't written anything.

All he does is wander around
looking at the land.

Resolve.

Acknowledge.

Forgive.

Repeat after me.

I'm sorry, and I thank you.

"I'm sorry, and I thank you."

Make it sound light and cheerful.

I'm sorry, and I thank you.

"I'm sorry, and I thank you."

You did a good job.

If you don't mind,

may I join you for a moment?

Okay.

After a meal, do you often or sometimes...

take a stroll around?

Yes.

Have you got any plans for tonight?

I was just thinking,
how about we hit the town?

Folks here on Saturdays...

make their way back after some beer.

You do practically everything here.

The joint has tasty chicken.

In a way, it doesn't taste local.

It's more like Japanese chicken.

I have to leave today.

Today?

Yes.

Are you married, by any chance?

No.

You came all this way from Seoul.

Isn't that quite a distance
for a single day?

I just wanted to come and see.

There is something about it.

I'm particularly fond of that Buddha.

Do you want me to take your picture?

- No.
- What?

I don't like taking pictures.

Still, take one.

Stashing up on them
keeps your memories stocked.

Look over here.

One, two!

Did you get that?

Or how about getting some tea?

Thank you.

Thanks for the tea.

What kind of tea is this good?

It's delicious.

Isn't it hard to come by?

Premium tea, right?

This is your average tea.

Where did you manage to find it?

Online.

On which website?

You can easily find it at tea shops.

What's it called?

Dong Ding Oolong.

- Dong what?
- Dong Ding.

- Dong Ding.
- Oolong.

- Dong Ding Oolong.
- Dong Ding Oolong.

The tea is from Taiwan.

Dong Ding Oolong.

Meditation can clear your mind.

But with overflowing information...

and ceaseless distractions in this world,

it's not easy to empty your mind.

Therefore...

I'll share a simple trick.

Just keep counting numbers.

From one to ten.

Repeat it time and again.

Do you understand?

- Yes.
- Yes.

All right.

Let's begin.

One, two, three...

four, five, six, seven...

Dong Ding... Dong Ding Oolong?

One, two...

three, four, five...

Temple food gets digested too quickly.

I'm hungry.

When your mind happens to wander,
focus on breathing.

But I can't keep my focus.

Smartphones are to blame.

I'll try it again.

One, two, three...

four, five, six, seven.

I want to knock it over.

The day tripper.

What's her purpose for travel?

Maybe it's some worry or concern.

The question brewing deep within...

must have brought her this far.

Yet the reason for why she came
remains a mystery.

One thing, however, is certain.

She also seems to wonder why I'm here.

The mad wanderers seemed to
just get up and vanish...

with the dawn of the 20th century.

Did they find some miracle cure?

Or was there nothing wrong to begin with?

I left my phone.

The start of mankind came with
a set of wanderers.

The problem is that we always want
some place new.

And once that place is reached,

there is a relentless pursuit for another.

With such constant wandering,
we're bound to get lost.

I'm sorry.

By any chance...

Are you heading to the temple?

In that case...

Can you direct me toward which way?

This way?

Is it this way?

Excuse me...

Where are you headed?

I mean...

Can I come with you?

My word!

My word!

My word!

I can finally breathe.

(Lee Na Young)

(Seo Hyun Woo, Sunwoo Jung A)

(Joo In Yeong, Woo Jeong Won, Kim In Su)

I can't be anything.

But then again, I can be anything.
