02x20 - Dust of Destruction

Post by bunniefuu »

You can't get far across these marshes.

You search over there. I'll head this

way. And watch out for the quicksand as

pools have been all over the place.

Right.

That crazy kid, trying to escape across

here. No one ever makes it.

Well, one thing's for sure, you'll never

get another chance to rob a bank.

I'll sure be glad when Penny and Martha

get back from Phoenix. Our new cookies

just isn't as good as they are. If you

don't like my cooking, you can just do it

without only I don't want to hear no more

complaints. Oh, I think you're a good

cook. I don't mind just because your

flapjacks taste like rubber. I got good

strong teeth. Rubber?Let me tell

you, Clipper King, I've been cooking

flapjacks for over 40 years, you know?

Okay. Okay, have your fun. But you're

gonna eat my rubber flapjacks for another

two weeks. Penny and Martha ain't coming

back just to please your fancy appetite.

Well, I guess I can last that long.

Hey, look up there, Jim. Poor kid. Should

we give him a lift?Let's see, why not.

Hey, you want a lift? No, thanks.

Hot day, a long road. Better take a

ride while you can. I told you, I don't

want a ride. Well, you don't have to get

sore about it. We're just trying to help.

I don't want your help. I don't want any

help. Hey, how long has it been since you

had anything to eat? You're a nosy old

buzzard, ain't you?

Yeah, yes I am. The only reason I

asked was Clipper and me figured on

having their lunch here in the car.

Clipper, his eyes are always bigger in

his stomach. He buys too much food, more

than we can eat. I sure hate to throw

away good food. There you are, Clipper.

Now don't eat that too fast. Get yourself

some milk out of that box back there.

Sure you don't want to ride.

Well,Maybe just a little ways.

Glad to have you. Right over here,

Clippers.

Here, you take this. I'll... I'll get

mine later.

Give him some milk.

Feeling better now, son?I was feeling all

right before. You sure didn't look it.

Mighty unusual running into a young

fellow like you all alone out here miles

from nowhere. You come pretty far?

You being nosy again, mister?Yeah,

guess I am, but I didn't mean to pry.

Boy, you sure got a chip on your

shoulder. I didn't ask for this ride. You

can let me out anytime you like. Wait!

Now quiet down, boys.

Sometimes a fellow has a mighty good

reason for having a chip on his shoulder.

You wouldn't care to tell us yours, would

you?I'm not telling you nothing. Not even

your name?I didn't ask your name.

What do you want to know mine for?No

reason in particular, except out in this

country. A man usually isn't ashamed to

tell his name to another man. I'm not

ashamed of my name. It's a good name.

It's Danny. Danny what?

Danny Clark. Right, glad to meet you,

Danny Clark. I'm Jim Bell and...

This eager beaver here is Clipper King.

That ankle here sure looks swollen. What

happened?I scratched it on some bushes.

It's all right. Looks infected

real bad, Jim. You better take him home

and fix it up. You're not going to take

me anywhere. Stop the car. I'm getting

out of here.

We wouldn't want to force a man to do

anything he didn't want to do. Shouldn't

walk too far in that lake. It isn't gonna

hold out much longer. It'll get me where

I'm going. About the food,

thanks.

How do you feel, son?

Take it easy, Danny. You've been a mighty

sick boy the last couple of days. I'll

say you have. You've been out of your

mind half the time. Doc Kent said you had

a temperature of 104. Who are you?

I'm Skyler King. I own this ranch.

How'd I get here?We brought you here

after you folded up on the road the other

day. But don't worry, Danny. The doc said

you're gonna be up and around in no time,

now that your leg's better and your

fever's broken. I gotta leave. I can't

stay here. Why can't you stay, Danny?

I got my raisins. I'd like to hear them.

I'll bet you would. Danny, we're only

trying to help. You were in pretty bad

shape when Jim and Clipper brought you

here. Now if you could tell us where you

came from, the name of your parents,

maybe we could get in touch with them.

I'm not gonna tell you nothing.

All right, Danny. If you won't let

us help you, I guess I'll have to contact

the police and ask them to take over. For

all I know, you may have run away from

home. Your parents may be terribly

worried. No. Now wait, mister.

I'll tell you all about myself. It's like

you said, I ran away from home, see? Why?

Because I was fed up, that's why. I

couldn't take no more. My

mother's dead. My old man was always

coming home drunk, beating me up. Gee,

Danny, that's awful. I don't blame you

for running away from home, do you, Sky?

This father of yours, where is he?

Oh, my old man? He's back home

somewhere in New York City. Yes, but

what's the address?I never had an

address. I always got kicked out of every

place where I lived. It's one of the

reasons why I came out here. I got

sick of not ever having a home of my own.

What brought you way out here to Arizona?

Arizona?Well, I think I got a couple

uncles out here somewhere, see, and I

thought I'd try to look them up. What are

their names?The names?

The same as mine, of course. Clark.

Good. At least that gives us something to

go on. We'll try to help you get in touch

with them. Well, I wouldn't bother. I I

don't think that they'd remember me. It's

worth a try. Jim, you want to drive into

town with me?I've got some business

there. Sure, Sky. You're not going to go

to the police?No, I

don't think that'll be necessary. Take

good care of our guests, Clipper, won't

you?I sure will, Sky.

Oh, and uh, thanks for being so honest

with me, Danny. There's nothing I like

better than a man who's not afraid to be

honest.

Gee, Danny, you sure had a rough life up

to now. But don't worry, you can stay

here as long as you need to. Oh, and

I'm sorry about those cracks I made the

other day. I didn't know what you'd been

through. Shake?

Hey, Danny, hurry up! If you want me to

give you that riding lesson today, you

better get started. I'll be with you in a

couple minutes, Clip. Hello?

Hello, would you get me the number of the

Durkin Ranch, please?

number, please?

Hello?Danny

Corrigan?Well, it can't be you,

Danny. Oh, boy. I read for you a k*ll

break and out a stir. You shouldn't

believe everything you read. I've come to

collect my cut. You better still have it.

Oh, yeah, sure, sure Danny. We've got it

for you. Yeah, you've got nothing to

worry about. Here, give me that.

Hello, Danny. This is Matt.

Where are you?Never mind where I am. I'm

coming to see you. And you better have

that dough that... Hey, Danny, what's

keeping you?Now, you sure

you understand, Uncle Matt?Uncle Matt?

Say what goes. Just be expecting me any

day now. Goodbye.

Gee, Danny, you found your uncles. How

did you do that?I just happen to remember

a place where my old man said they'd be,

maybe. I forgot all about it. How soon

you gonna see him?Well, I thought I'd

better stick around and rest up and get a

little stronger. Hey, how about that

riding lesson?Do I get it or not?You'd

better. I promised Jim and Sky that you'd

know how to gallop by the time they got

back from Phoenix tonight. Let's go.

Just our luck. The kid's alive. I thought

we were rid of him for good. But I know

one thing. He's not going to get any cut

from us. Well, what else can we do, Matt?

He knows too much. He starts to talk and

tells who pulled that job with. Use your

head, Ben. He didn't talk at the trial or

those two years of reform school. He's

not going to start now. Yeah, but that's

when he's expecting to get his cut. Now,

if he doesn't get it... So you're going

to turn over part of your share on the

silver platter. Is that it?Look

spineless. I married you because you had

half a hundred thousand bucks. We need

that half to live on. We're not cutting

it down to any third. Yeah, I know,

Rhoda, but... well, the kid does really

deserve his share. We We couldn't have

pulled a job if he hadn't driven a car

for us. And when he got caught and we

didn't, he he never gave us away, not

once. Oh, why did I have to pick a

jellyfish for a husband?It's too bad I

didn't meet your brother first. At least

he's got backbone. You've got no right to

talk to me that way, Rhoda. It's not

nice. You should show me a little more

respect. I'll leave him alone, Rhoda.

We got to do something about the kid.

Ben's right about one thing. If we don't

give him his cut, he'll talk. There's

ways to keep him from talking and from

getting his cut. Yeah, I was thinking the

same thing. Oh, no, Matt.

Rhoda, not not m*rder. He's only a kid.

Oh, Ben, be quiet.

There ought to be some way of tracing

that phone call. And when I do, I

think I'll pay a little visit to our

Danny boy.

Well, you'll learn fast. All riding is

fun, Cliff. Can we do it again tomorrow?

Sure. There's a lot of things around the

ranch that are fun, Danny. You stick

around long enough, we'll show them to

you. Let's give him some water.

Where'd that come from?Come on, Daddy,

down! He's

moving in closer. Couple more shots and

he'll have us for sure. He hasn't got us

yet. It's mean

ones, Clint, not you. Get out while

you're still alive. Are you crazy? You're

staying here as long as you are. I got an

idea. Give me your hat.

You k*ll him, you dirty coward! You k*ll

him!

We're lucky. He swallowed the bait. You

all right?Yeah.

Thanks to you. I wonder who he

was. How should I know?But

you said he was after you, not me. What

made you so sure of that?Well, it was

aiming at me. Ain't that reason enough?

Why would anyone want to k*ll you, Danny?

Well, he probably thought I was somebody

else. I'm not known around here.

Doesn't make sense to me.

Now we better get the horses. Hey, Cliff.

What's the matter?Well, there's one thing

I don't get. Why should you stick around

when you could have got away? Why did you

risk your neck for me?What a crazy

question. You were in trouble. I wasn't

gonna run out on you while you were in

trouble. You would have done the same for

me, wouldn't you?I don't

know. Where I come from, people only make

trouble for each other. I'm sure

going to make trouble for whoever took

those shots at me.

What are you doing, Danny?I heard a

noise. Hey, you dopey

guy. Sky doesn't let anybody touch that

g*n without permission. Now give it to

me.

What's

the matter with you anyway? What you want

this g*n for?I'm gonna sh**t

grasshoppers. Don't you know any better

than to steal? You want something in this

house, ask for it. You'll get it. I'll

quit the sermon. Call your uncle. Call

the police if you want. I don't care.

Nobody's gonna call anybody. What's going

on in here?I never heard such a

racket. How did that revolver get out?

Well, it's my fault, Sky. I I wanted

to show Danny a g*n. I couldn't find the

keys. Sorry, I forced your desk

open. You should be. Don't ever do it

again. No, I won't.

Come on, Danny, let's get some sleep.

What do you make of it, Sky?Clipper

never forced that desk. I know.

He was protecting Danny. Well then why

didn't you call him on it?Jim,

Danny will never admit who tried to k*ll

him this afternoon unless he trusts us

completely. He's never had a real friend

before and Clipper's trying to be one to

him. I think this is something we should

let Clipper handle in his own way. Why

didn't you tell?Because Sky thinks you're

honest. I didn't want to change his mind.

Now, suppose you tell me why you really

wanted that g*n. Well, I

I thought I'd take a ride over tomorrow

and maybe see my uncles. Well, in case

anybody started taking potshots at me

again, well, I thought I'd have some

protection. Is that all?You don't need

any protection for that. Just tell me

where your uncles live and I'll fly you

over there. You'll get there much

quicker. Oh, I wouldn't want you to go to

all that trouble. I'll go alone. You'll

fly. Besides, I'd like to meet those

uncles of yours. Now, get some shut eye

and we'll take off first thing in the

morning.

If your uncle's ranch is near Mesa

Valley, I know a landing field real close

by. Should be right down there somewhere.

Boy, I never knew what it was like to be

up in a plane before. Things sure look

pretty down there. You like flying, huh

It's terrific. Well, you

stick with Sky and me long enough, and

you'll be flying this crate in no time.

No kidding. You mean you teach me?Sure,

it'd be fun. There's our field.

Hang on, we're going to land.

hey look somebody's coming

Matt it's Danny I thought

you said you finished him off I thought I

had who's that other kid with him same

one that was with him yesterday what do

we do now Matt I'm gonna finish what I

started wait Matt don't be a fool if

Danny knows we tried to k*ll him he may

have talked to someone we've got to find

out first if he's blab to anyone yeah

maybe you're right we'll meet him on the

porch

Hiya, Danny boy. Sure good to see you.

Hello, Uncle Matt. Hello, Danny. Uncle

Ben. I guess you haven't met my wife,

Rhoda. We've been married since I saw you

last. Welcome to the Barax Ranch, Danny.

Oh, thanks. Well, this is my friend,

Clipper King. Hiya, Clipper. Oh, glad to

know you, Clipper. There you go, Clipper.

Sir, this is quite a layout you got here.

Would you like to see more of it?Rhoda,

why don't you show Clipper around. Me and

Ben got some things to talk over with

Danny. Sure. Come along, Clipper. I'll

give you the grand tour. What do you say

we go inside, Danny boy?All

right, let's get this straight. I know

you tried to get rid of me yesterday. No

try it again. Get rid of you? What are you

talking about, Danny?I'm talking about

the shots one of you fired at me. Oh, now

you know we wouldn't do anything like

that. You been telling folks we took

potshots at you?I ain't told nobody

nothing. Just so you won't try any

fancy stuff while I'm here, let me warn

you this. I left a sealed

envelope at the place where I'm staying

with a full confession in it, with

instructions that it'd be opened if

Clipper and me aren't back by 3:00. Ohh

Danny, we wouldn't dream of keeping you

from getting back. All right, then give

me my dough and I'll get out of here.

Well, Danny, we've been trying to get

your dough for you, but over 30,000 bucks

is a lot of money. We don't have that

much around here. Quit stalling or I will

talk. We'll have it for you tomorrow,

Danny. I swear we will. We'll bring it

over ourselves. Okay. But let

your wife bring it alone. I don't want

you two guys anywhere near the flying

crown. All right, Danny, anything you

say. And just so you won't try another

double-cross, I'm gonna keep that full

confession around until after I get my

dough. Danny, I don't think it's very

safe leaving something like that lying

around. Suppose those friends of yours

have already opened that envelope. That's

the difference between them and you. I

can trust them. I

still think you ought to open it, Sky.

No, Jim. Not until three o'clock.

Hi. Guess what, Sky?I met Danny's aunt

and uncles. We're real nice people.

That's fine, Clipper. Hey, give

me that! You weren't supposed to open it

till after three. I didn't, Danny.

Oh, I'm sorry. You see, I

already know most of what it says. What

do you mean?I think it's time for a

showdown, Danny. Why don't you come clean

with me?I don't know what you're talking

about. I'm afraid I didn't believe all

those things you told me about yourself

the other day, Danny. You were much too

glib. I told you the truth! Part of it,

yes. Your mother is dead. Your

father wasn't drunkard and deserted you.

That's when you fell into bad company,

wasn't it?You were lonely, scared, had no

one to turn to. So you let a couple of

crooks persuade you to help them hold up

a bank. Where'd you ever dig up a crazy

story like that?By taking a set of your

fingerprints into town and having them

checked by the FBI. Your real name's

Danny Corrigan. You escaped from the

state reformatory for boys. And you're

not dead, Danny, because they couldn't

find your body when they dredged that

pool of quicksand. It's not a lie. It's

It's a lie. Is it, Danny?And I suppose

you didn't look up those two uncles of

yours so you could collect your cut of

the money they stole. Get back, all of

you. I'm getting out of here, and don't

you try to stop me. Danny, are you going

crazy?Stay where you are, Clipper.

Danny's not leaving. Danny?Do you know

who that money belongs to you helped take

from that bank?Belongs to me now. Me and

my partners. I see. You'd rob

Clipper and me for them. What do you mean?

Danny, you don't just rob a

building when you rob a bank. You rob

human beings. Clipper and I both had

money in that bank. So did thousands of

other people, some of them very poor. You

took their life savings. Don't hand me

that sob stuff. Get out of my way, I'm

leaving. Then you'll have to sh**t me

first, Danny, because I'm gonna take that

g*n away from you. Stay back or I

will sh**t. Look out, Sky, he will.

Go ahead, Danny. sh**t. If

that's what you really want to do.

You know I couldn't sh**t you, and after

you and Cliff and Jim have been so good

to me. I was pretty sure you couldn't,

Danny. It takes a really bad boy to k*ll

a man.

Now tell me the truth. When are you

getting paid off?Rhoda,

she's Ben's wife. She's coming over

tomorrow with my share. Good. We'll let

her. We need that money as evidence. But

once she's delivered it, we're going

after those uncles of yours. Well,

what do you say we raid the icebox?I'm

hungry.

Phew, that was a close one.

What do you know?It was empty all the

time. Sky was just

testing Danny, wasn't he?

Think you'll need that. Just being

prepared. It's Rhoda, Sky. She's

almost here. Is she alone?Yeah, all by

yourself. Good. I was afraid those uncles

of yours might try to pull a fast one,

Danny. I'll let her in.

Hello, Rhoda. Hello, Danny.

Hello, Clipper. Hello. Well,

aren't you going to introduce me?Sure.

This is Sky King, Jim Bell,

Rhoda Durkin. Mrs. Durkin? How do you do?

Well, Danny, dear, I brought you the

present I promised you yesterday. It's

right in there. You can cut the act,

Rhoda. They all know the truth. So you

squealed, you little rat. Yeah, and I'm

glad I did. Awful glad. We're going to

drop you off at the sheriff's office,

Mrs. Durkin. And we're going to pick up

your husband and his brother. If you're

smart, you won't resist. Open the box,

Danny. Let's have a look at that present

of yours.

It's the money, all right, Sky. You were

a fool, Danny. I bet you thought I

wouldn't really bring it. Just think. If

you'd kept your trap shut, you might have

had all this. Matt, Ben!

Nice work, Rhoda. They've been hiding

outside since early this morning, just

waiting for me to get 'em in. What

happens now? When a man knows too much for

his own good, he's gotta die.

Danny's been doing a lot of talking. And

all of you know just a little bit too

much. No, Matt, do what you wanted me to.

Don't hurt them. They've been good to me

better than anyone's ever been before.

I'm sorry, Danny. You've left me no

choice. What about the police? They'll be

hunting you for m*rder as well as

robbery. Ah, no, they won't. This is an

open and shut case. Boy escaped from

reform school. He plans a holdup.

There's gunplay. He shoots all of you,

and he gets shot during the fight. And

with Danny's record,The police aren't

gonna ask any questions. You're the ones

that got him into trouble, ya crooks!

Thanks for the compliment. And for your

reward, I'll see that you get the first

b*llet.

How's Danny, Sky?He's a tough kid,

Clipper. Too tough to let just one b*llet

finish him off.

Time to go, Danny. Gee, Danny, when are

we gonna see you again?Well, I wouldn't

worry about you about it, Clipper.

After Danny gets through testifying at

the Durkin trial, I wouldn't be a bit

surprised if he didn't get a parole.

Neither would I. I've already talked to

the governor about it. Thanks.

But even if I don't go back to the reform

school, what then?I've got no other place

to go. There's a place for everybody,

Danny. The right place. And we're going

to help you find yours. Out here near you?

Why, sure, you big dope. How else can I

teach you to fly if you weren't out here

near us?Come on.
