- Jim, you're going to take me on a hunting trip? When?
- Well, I was, just as soon as I got back from Arkansas.
Pity you won't be able to go now.
- [Francois] Oh, I'll be able to go.
- And go to Appaloosas and give my mother the smallpox?
No, sir, oh no you don't.
- But I'm perfectly well.
- Yeah, but you've been exposed to it,
and you may break out anytime.
- I won't if I get the vaccination.
- Well, don't dilute that noble blood of yours.
- I'm trapped. It is a high price, but I will pay it.
Come on, let's go right now, Aunt Marie.
Dr. Beranger is expecting us.
[laughter]
- Thank you, Jim.
[uplifting music]
- But smallpox is spread by personal contact.
Would you jeopardize the lives of the city's children?
- Of course not, Dr. Fry.
But we'll only increase public panic
if we close the schools.
[footsteps]
- [Woman] Come back here.
- Hey, just a minute.
Hey, who does this young gentleman belong to?
- [Woman] He's mine, thank you.
- Come along, young fellow.
- [Woman] I guess we're all a little bit scared.
- There's nothing to be scared of.
It's only a little scratch.
We are very lucky to be living in a modern age
with a modern miracle like vaccine to protect us.
- Is the doctor here?
- They're waiting for the vaccine to be delivered.
I think they're having a doctor's meeting.
- There's really no cause for alarm.
We will have ample supply of vaccine
or will have in a few minutes.
- Where is it? Where is this servant of yours?
- I can't imagine.
He should've returned half an hour ago.
- I'm sorry but I can't stay any longer.
I have patients waiting.
- But you're up into the vaccine doctor.
- I'll pick it up later in the day.
- As you please, Dr. Fry.
- Good day, gentlemen. - Good day.
- Now gentlemen...
[baby crying]
[banging]
- [Child] Mommy.
- Oh, what is it? - Mommy.
- Bring him inside.
[murmuring]
- Cicero! Put him there, Mr. Bowie.
[coughing]
What happened, man? What happened?
- Gone, gone.
- The vaccine? The vaccine's gone?
- Stolen, two men on the docks stole.
- Somebody shot him to steal the vaccine.
It just came in on the Boston packet.
Please don't make that public, Mr. Bowie.
Don't go, Dr. Fry. This changes everything.
- [Marie] How is he?
- [Francois] What happened to him, Jim?
- An accident, I'll tell you about it later. Come on.
- But, but what about--
- We better go now, come on. - Our vaccination.
- I'm sorry, my friends, we're not prepared
to vaccinate today.
You may as well go home. I'll notify you.
Oh, Mr. Bowie, a moment please.
Could you step inside?
Mr. Bowie, we have to get that vaccine back.
Can you help us?
- How can I?
- I don't know but...
I don't think you realize the seriousness of the situation.
A month ago, we sent our reserve supply
to the Chickasaw Nation.
Now, there's an epidemic here,
and our new shipment from Boston's been stolen, and, well--
- You're running low.
- Worse, there's no vaccine.
- In the whole city?
- None, sir, none.
- Well, who'd wanna steal a vaccine?
What would they do with it?
Oh, doctor, I wouldn't even know where to begin,
and he can't help us.
[breathing]
- He's conscious.
Easy, man, can you hear me?
We need to get that vaccine.
Try and help us, do you know who stole it?
- Cicero, this is Jim Bowie. Do you know who attacked you?
Do you know who it was?
Huh?
- What is it, Cicero? Cicero!
- He was trying to tell you something, doctor.
- Now there's no hope.
- Maybe he did tell us something.
Did you see that? - What's that?
- There's a man on the riverfront.
He's called Three Finger Jacques.
Maybe that's who he meant.
- What kind of a man?
- Well, he's a thief, a cut throat, a crimp.
I had a little go-around with him once.
- Could you find him?
- This is a job for the police, Dr. Beranger.
Besides, I don't even know if that's who he meant.
But we'll never know.
- Now that he's dead.
- There'll be many dead if we don't find that vaccine.
Hundreds of schoolchildren have been exposed.
They'll be the first casualties.
Think of them, Mr. Bowie.
- Well, I'll try, I'll do my best, doctor.
[relaxing music]
- Where's Tremayne?
- He hasn't come yet.
Did you see the mayor? - Yes.
- Is he closing the schools?
- Everything, no public gatherings, restrictions on travel.
By tomorrow night, the whole city will be in panic.
What's this?
- A new bonnet.
- Today? You bought a new bonnet today?
- I take it back if you don't like it.
- No, no, no, keep it, keep it, it's alright, keep it.
- Don't worry, Dan, everyone will be vaccinated.
We are not doing any harm.
- Where is Tremayne?
- [Giselle] He'll be here, he'll bring the vaccine.
Don't worry, darling.
- He k*lled Beranger's servant, old Cicero.
- k*lled him?
- [Dan] Now we're involved in m*rder.
- You didn't m*rder anybody, darling.
If Tremayne did that, it's his problem.
- It's too dangerous, Giselle.
- The story is just the same.
In two days, you'll give the newspapers the facts.
The thieves approached you with the vaccine.
The price was exorbitant but you paid it,
rather than risk the health of the city.
You will be a hero, Dan, no matter what you charge
for the vaccinations.
Oh, Dan, we will be rich, even after we pay Tremayne.
We can be on the next boat to Paris.
- Does it mean that much to you?
- Oh yes, yes, darling.
[bell ringing]
- Alright?
- Yes.
You shot Cicero.
- Not I, your man, Jacques. - Why?
- Cicero was brave. He drew a p*stol.
How do you know?
- He had the strength to get home.
I was there.
- Uh, he talked?
- No, but he managed to do this.
And Jim Bowie was there.
- Bowie?
- Does he know what this meant?
- He knew.
He's looking for your Three Finger Jacques right now.
- Then get Jacques hidden.
If Bowie can't find him, he will never find out anything.
- Can you do that?
- I know a spot near Lake Pontchartrain
on the Old Spanish Trail.
Bowie will never find him there.
- Then hurry, Bowie's on his trail already.
[somber music]
- [Jim] I had to look for the man with two missing fingers
in New Orleans' toughest section, The Swamp,
on upper Girod Street.
I knew it was unsafe to be abroad there,
but safety was hardly my concern that night.
But where in The Swamp? That was my problem.
I couldn't go around asking every man I met
to let me count his fingers.
I'd just about reached the end of my rope
when up walked the eyes of the night,
the one fella in the whole neighborhood
who might just know the whereabouts
of the object of my search, the lamplighter,
whose duties took him into every lane and byway
of this underworld maze.
Three Finger Jacques, yes, the lamplighter did know,
even where he roomed.
My hopes revived, if I was right,
if Three Finger Jacques was my man,
I'd soon have that vaccine.
I was certain I had the right house,
but the landlady insisted that she had no tenant
who answered the description.
When she saw I wouldn't leave, she changed her story.
Yes, Jacques had left that morning owing her money.
Now there was a new tenant in the room.
I had to see the room.
Even if Jacques had gone, the vaccine
might still be hidden there.
If you don't mind, ma'am, I'll just take a look at his room.
[bang]
That's it, isn't it?
The Boston Institution to Inoculation of Kindpox?
- Yes, but the vaccine--
- I was too late, and now they know I'm after him.
- 11 new cases yesterday. We've got to find it.
What kind of a ghoul would steal vaccine? Why?
- Could it be, do you think, one of your colleagues?
- [Ron] A doctor?
- Just think about it, who else would stand to profit by it?
Yes, sir, I got a notion that in a couple of days
some doctor is gonna come forward
and announce that he has a supply of vaccine.
- No doctor could be that monstrous.
- [Jim] A doctor will have it,
and he'll charge a nice, fat fee for it.
- Seems logical, but no, I can't believe it.
- Wait a minute, if I'm right,
I think I know how to beat this thing.
- [Ron] How?
- Offer free vaccinations.
- With what? We have no vaccine.
- [Jim] I'll go to Mobile and get some.
- How do you know there's any there?
- It doesn't matter if there is or there isn't,
we'll just announce that there is.
- I don't follow you, Bowie.
- Look, doctor, suppose that there's an item
in tomorrow morning's Louisiana Courier
saying that I'm leaving for Mobile at noon
to bring back free vaccine for the stricken city
of New Orleans.
Now how do you think the thieves will feel then?
- The stolen vaccine would be worthless.
They'd be worried sick.
- Exactly, and what do you think they'd do?
- [Ron] I don't know, try and stop you.
- That's what I think they'd do.
- Just a minute, Mr. Bowie.
These men k*lled poor Cicero.
- I know it. I'll be careful, doctor.
- The hopes of New Orleans ride with you, Mr. Bowie.
[hopeful music]
- [Tremayne] Good morning, Mrs. Fry,
is the doctor at home?
- [Giselle] Yes, come in.
- I thought he would like to know that our friend, Jacque,
has been safely tucked away.
Hey, what's the matter?
- Read this.
- Hm, well he does not leave until noon.
There's only one road to Mobile, the old Spanish Trail.
- I don't want anymore k*lling, Tremayne.
- It's Bowie's neck or ours, now I need your help.
Come on.
[somber music]
- [Jim] I saddled up at noon the next day,
and took a real long time doing it,
waiting for the attempt to stop me.
But when it came, it was from an unexpected quarter.
- Jim, oh Jim, I was afraid I wouldn't find you in time.
- [Jim] Oh, well I left enough signs.
- Sign means a trail, Aunt Marie.
- Jim, will you take Francois along with you?
- Where, to Mobile?
- No, only partway, to my cousin Toinette's plantation.
I'd like him to be out of the city
until he can get vaccinated.
- Marie, he's been exposed.
He shouldn't even be here, he should be kept
inside the house.
- [Dan] Mr. Bowie.
- [Jim] Oh, good day.
- Read about what you're doing, an excellent idea.
- [Jim] Well, thank you, Dr. Fry.
- Good day, New Orleans hopes again,
thanks to you, Mr. Bowie.
- Mr. Tremayne, Mr. Bowie.
- Monsieur. - Howdy, sir.
If you'll excuse me, gentlemen.
- Jim, oh please, Jim, I'm so worried.
It's only 20 miles.
- I'll tell you what I'll do then, I'll use him as a decoy.
- Good, I shall be a decoy.
What is a decoy?
- How do you mean, a decoy?
- Well, I'll let Francois carry the vaccine, you see,
and then I'll just carry a little small package
of some kind.
Then if the murderers attack me,
maybe Francois will get through with the vaccine.
- Yes, I shall be a hero, like Paul Revere.
- Oh, you will be no such thing.
You're just a little boy and you will stay in the house
until there will be vaccine available,
that's what you'll do.
Decoy, the very idea. Home now.
Please let's go home.
- [Francois] I'm too young, always.
- Or too old.
- You really expect trouble, Bowie?
- It's possible.
- Seriously, shouldn't you have some help,
someone with you?
- Who?
- Well, Tremayne here's a swordsman, a brave man.
- Are you offering his services?
- I'd be glad to offer them myself.
It would be an honor to serve on such a mission.
- Well, I'd be much obliged.
I followed the Old Spanish Trail to Mobile.
[somber music]
I wondered about Tremayne.
I began to wonder about Dr. Fry too.
He was one of Dr. Beranger's trusted associates,
but just the same, I never turned my back
on his swordsman friend.
We were well out of New Orleans, around the lake,

Why can't I come back with you?

that he stole the vaccine and sold it to Dr. Fry, huh?
- Haha, I do enjoy with a high class professional gentleman
like you.
- I'll have more for you, but in the meantime,
in order for you to remain safe, you must stay here.
I'll call for you in a couple of days.
- Water.
- I thought you said the alligators would take care of him.
- Give me some water.

- The smallpox, he's got it.

Hand, hand me some water.
- You left him alive?
- We can discuss that later.

- I tell you he's dying, perhaps dead already.
You vaccinate us and then we will go out
and drop his body in the lake.
Watch your manners.
And that's all there is to it?
- That's all.

- Yes, when I get back.
- And you will risk giving your mother the smallpox?
- Now, wait a minute--
- The boy's right, Mr. Bowie.
Everyone should be vaccinated.
- [Francois] The vaccine is from very high-boned cows, Jim.
- Well, dog my cats, how did I ever get mixed up with you.
Which arm is it, doctor? The left?
- Left arm.
- That high enough? - A little higher.
- Oh, is that alright?
- [Ron] Yeah, that's right.
- Where are you gonna put it? - Right here.
- Oh.
