01x18 - There Goes a Dump Truck

ok team let's start to build trucks

trucks keeps everything moving when you

look at a bridge a building or a

brand-new road always remember that none

of these could have been built without

the help of a truck trucks make it

happen and one of the most important

trucks on any construction job is the

dump truck talk about real power there's

just almost no limit to what a dump

truck can haul

there goes a dump truck have you ever

wondered how many different sizes of

dump trucks there are do you know how

much dirt the average dump truck can

carry did you ever imagine driving one

of those big rigs yourself well today

we're going to learn the answers to all

those questions when we pay a visit to a

construction vehicle dispatch company

Oh Lake man who knew he had to get up so

early to drive dump truck hi kids I'm

dump truck driver Dave well actually I'm

not a real dump truck driver but

hopefully they'll let me pretend today

as we follow around this trucking

company is they dispatched their trucks

to different construction jobs but first

I better change my shirt want to make a

good first impression a large company

like this has to be ready early in the

morning because that's when most

construction work starts all these

vehicles have to be gassed up and pass a

safety inspection before they can hit

the road and get to work

man I can't wait to meet the former than

asking my first question what's the

biggest truck he's got you're standing

in front of it oh man I miss informant

they Dave how you doing good so tell me

about this well this is our 773 rock

truck we've got two of these babies the

tires you know about seven feet tall

they and it's used only for offer at

haulin it's huge yeah it is you're ready

to learn what dump trucks can haul I

sure AM look I even brought my own wheel

barrel yeah good idea okay let's go

all right so I understand there are

three different kinds of dump trucks in

there right that's right Dave this is

one of the most powerful dump trucks the

end jump look how high the bed of the

truck at the tilt up so that all the

rocks can slide out the back it's really

big and it sure holds a lot of rock I'm

standing in the back of this humongous

dump truck now the load is measured in

tons one time equals 2,000 pounds that's

about as much as a car weighs and this

truck holds 30 times let's pile a rock

right here well just happens to weigh 30

tons two

you know I don't think this is all going

to fit in my wheelbarrow hi so you

really know your dump trucks alright get

my homework alright I've got three jobs

I want you to coordinate to me today

yeah just like a real Foreman so do you

know the different types and sizes a

dump truck yeah let's see yeah that one

over there that's a five yard it's one

of the smallest one it's got six wheels

and the one they most often use for

maintenance workers to fill in potholes

in the street that's right this truck is

called a belly jump if you look closely

it opens from the bottom of the bed to

drop it low

I kid my name is Frank this is my dump

truck 600 horsepower engine 18 wheels on

my Dennison I work for him connected to

pranks 20-yard dump truck is a transfer

trailer they call the box on this

trailer up up with two trailers

frankenhole twice as much stuff

when he's done jumping one he can slide

the pup into his endo and go again

truck the sides are low so that a front

loader can easily load it you can fit 2

or 3 elephants in the back of this baby

and here's the granddaddy of them all

to come up to 930 each I until truck

it's the largest in the world just look

at the stairs you need to climb up to

get to the calf it's so big it can't be

driven on any Highway

now that's what I call C alright now as

long as you're here what you have to

understand above all else is there's so

much activity look that you really have

to be careful hey I'm fine I'm fine next

Wow look at all the excitement going on

here you know I know we're supposed to

have some dump trucks here pretty quick

let's look around see we can figure out

where to put up find out where they are

don't touch dump trucks your age um just

kind of that go ahead yeah guys looks

like we're gonna need some muscle down

here bring on the truck how those sell

trucks kitty you're so fat all this

activity is preparing the ground for a

new road these great big pipes are going

to be used as storm drains so that once

the new road is finished the storm

drains will allow a place for water to

run off and avoid flooding the pipes are

lowered into trenches that have been

filled with a special bedding called

base Rock scrapers and graders level out

the dirt to make sure the ground is good

and flat to lay down a row

ok let's check out my other construction

how are things going they're pretty

and I wouldn't exactly say it was quiet

54 on that all righty we are rockin and

rollin here is a rock quarry I decided

to come down here to see what all the

commotion was about you know sometimes a

boulder is so huge they have to grow it

up into smaller pieces that they can use

that's an awesome dump truck

the crusher takes these huge boulders

and crushes them in the Little Rock's

imagine this Apple is a boulder and my

mouth is the crusher which is the big

boulders into little ha

so Boulder tastes great the conveyor

belts carry the rocks to different areas

for sorting and sometime the conveyor

may carry the rocks to a whole other

plant miles away that kinda looks like a

roller coaster these rocks will become

base rocks to be used for other

construction jobs cool I got a blister I

think I got some rocks in my shoes yeah

I'm sorry I can't help but I just love

this big equipment yeah but you're a

foreman a foreman doesn't drive a front

loader I'm sorry I guess it's time to go

take care of my truck huh yeah let's get

you'd be amazed how quickly they fill

these trucks up when you have a front

loader this that's big it only takes a

couple scoops to fill up a huge dump

truck like this one and send it on its

way

alright so you're good to go

we'll see you down the site

we're back at the road construction site

you know when a road gets old you gotta

replace it we're removing the old road

and then we're going to lay down a new

one after the old asphalt gets chewed up

and ground to fit it gets loaded in this

dump truck and take it to the plant to

be recycled

what a cool machine

hey where's that's when I loader at we

need to get that fall out I'm trying to

eat my sandwich oh it's off oh it's

right over there oh cool

where'd that come from

oh man isn't this cool this is one of

the biggest coolest pieces of equipment

on the construction site it's called a

motor grader it's got this big blade in

the middle that you use like a popsicle

stick smoothing out the dirt pretty cool

huh

but you know what that's only half of it

let's check out the back here in the

back this is called the Ripper because

it's got these huge teeth that rip into

the ground like when you use your

fingers to rip into the dirt well this

does it in big huge dirt and then the

scraper left-foot smoothes it out big

teeth all right now let's fire it up and

work the controls

ooh look at all these controls levers

and switches Oh

jay-z this Duty key looks like it might

move the scraper aim pretty nifty huh

whoa check it out

I'm twisting here hmm this is easy what

about this hubba chubby what's it do Oh

No what's happening the wheels wow this

is harder than it looks

now this thingamajiggy must dig holes in

the ground I better stop doing that whoo

I shouldn't be in here I think I should

leave the driving to the professional

man I can't wait to get a bite of this

sandwich okay we're ready for the

asphalt

I haven't even got a chop yet all right

well how much I suppose do we need now

after this mile road we're gonna need

about 3,000 tons of asphalt

then we need it now jeez are you okay

3,000 tons of asphalt now make a blinker

blinker nine one one nine one one ATL

sir you have dispatched all the trucks

over the asphalt plant they should get

there about the same time Dave does yeah

I think he's hanging tough I think he's

doing a pretty good job

all right we're at the processing plant

where they make and mix the asphalt come

on let's go get our load

all right I've got a huge order I need

three thousand tons of asphalt pronto no

problem but it's not going to fit in

there where's the truck oh my trucks

well they're armed we'll go right over

there right where they're supposed to be

ready to roll

when you're baking a cake you need to

use just the right ingredients to make

the cake taste yummy the main ingredient

in cake is flour

well the main ingredient when you're

making asphalt is rocks and you have to

use just the right rocks for each

different kinds of asphalt here is where

they choose which kinds of rough they're

going to be using for the different

kinds of asphalt they choose the rocks

they come over and they push them down

into these huge bins where they go down

the chutes

the sh**t cap opens on the bottom of the

bin and the rocks come out on the lower

conveyor belt this is the conveyor belt

it takes the rocks up up and away and

into the plant this is the batch plant

the cold rock comes in and goes into

this enormous dryer the dryer tumbles

the rock around to dry it out try to

like your dryer at home tumbles around

your shirt and socks the moisture from

the rock comes out of the plant in the

form of steam they take the dry rocks

and they send them up the hot stone

elevator come out of the elevator into

the shaker and then down into the pug

mill that's where they add the oil and

then in just 30 seconds mix it up and

make asphalt ready to be dumped right on

the trucks

come on move it up move it out move it

out this is a last step in the making of

our asphalt with a frost all mixed and

finished it gets dropped in the back of

the truck then the trucks ready to roll

out and get itself way okay at the great

drop drop so here it is our finished

product the asphalt started out as the

cold rocks went up in the dryer got

mixed around on the plant with all the

oil and dropped in the truck and now

it's hot asphalt it's real hot how hot

let's find out I got my thermometer

right here man it's up to 250 degrees

now that's just about right the asphalt

supposed to be between 250 and 300

degrees right now it's still going

grew this asphalt's hot that means it's

ready so if you're ready I'm ready let's

go make a road the temperature outside

has to be 50 degrees or higher to lay

down asphalt

now not all the roads are paved with

asphalt but most are here our dump truck

don't be asphalt into the baby machine

and then the paper spreads out asphalt

to make the new road big look at the

heat rising from the road hot stuff

I see your trucks are here loader with

asphalt yep

hot asphalt ready to go amazing isn't it

now comes the best part we take the big

ruler and we flatten out the road

check it out it's just like a big

gigantic rolling pin

no no not my wheelbarrow my share with

you this air oh i sandwich

oh my poor sandwich

well that's it we're done here for the

day you need a fine job dump truck Dave

lucky but my wheelbarrow is it and hey

a pretty great road huh okay I got to
