[theme music]
See that, Daniel?
Unsharp...Indian pony.
Heading back time for me.
We can't look for Jessie ourselves.
Suppose I offer you $100 to continue with us.
Man gotta look to his own scalp. Get my meaning?
Alright, 500.
You got yourself a paid scout.
Let's go.
Guess I was foolish for running away from you.
I would have died without your help.
One night and we'll be somewhere.
We're talking about women being here and having to listen--
Josh, don't interfere.
Oh, you figure that's rough talk?
- Do you? - Yes.
And what about doing something?
I think you better move on out. Go on.
Leave him alone.
Did Zeb Macahan give you that scar?
I'm raising your fee to $1000.
What's the other 500 for?
You will behave respectfully towards my niece..
'...and my nephew and myself.'
I'm gonna see that you boys get
every last dollar that you think I owe ya.
We'll be in touch.
You can figure on it, we'll be in touch.
That mountain man, he's carrying a lot of cash.
Maybe worthwhile if we met them.
Couldn't take more than five of us.
Whoa, whoa, boys.
Too much alkaline in the river ahead, Tap.
We gonna have to stampede the cattle across
before they get a chance to drink.
[howling and g*nshots]
Here they come.
Don't let it stop to drink.
Keep in touch.
What, Mr. Henry?
Oh nothing, son. I was just talking to myself.
'It's a habit I picked up'
when I used to stay on night watch at sea.
Hyah! Hyah!
Alright boys, let's turn 'em.
Get 'em bedded down.
Jeffery be good cook.
Mr. Henry does the cookin'.
Then you good helper.
Me like Jeffery, maybe.
I don't want no Injun liking me.
What'd you got against Injuns, boy?
One of 'em ate my dog.
[laughing]
Well, I reckon a whole lot worse
things than that can happen to a man in his lifetime.
Sure would be a big help
to scout a day or two ahead for water.
I just don't like the idea of you
alone in the Apache country, Luke.
I told you not to worry.
I've acquired a little savvy in rough country.
I can take care of myself.
Luke, I gotta thing I wanna say to you.
Been watching you grow, boy.
I'm proud.
Well, I don't figure you're any more accustomed
to handing out a compliment as I am to getting one.
Take care, Luke.
I'll do that, Uncle Zeb.
From the direction he took
I'd say he's got selling on his mind.
Selling?
Selling what?
sl*ve trade's flourishing South of Cimarron, ma'am.
sl*ve trade?
Oh, my god.
'And not just colored.'
Apaches down along that border
buying men, women, white, red.
They sell 'em to the mountain Comancheros.
Place they call "Valley of Tears".
Oh Lord, Mr. Peasley.
We've got to move faster.
We have to catch up with them somehow.
Yeah, the trouble with following the trail is
we keep moving slower than they do.
Well...there's got to be someway.
Well, I got an idea.
If you're up to it.
Yes, what is it?
Cut right across 'em flat.
'We meet 'em at a place called "Crazy Man Pass".'
What, out there?
Don't change an Indian's nature, ma'am.
That buck is gonna stick right along these rim rocks here.
All the way down South.
'Not gonna leave a trail for anybody to follow.'
'We're never gonna catch up to 'em that way.'
But we cut right across those flats..
...riding day and night we stand a chance
of meeting them at the pass.
By daylight..
..that's if he's going where I think he's going.
'Of course, that's a real rough ride.'
'Especially for a woman.'
Rough, it may be.
'But we'll ride through those flats'
and if needs be, we'll ride both day and night, Mr. Peasley.
Giddy up.
Come on, Daniel.
'Move it.'
I know I can't make you understand
but us travelling South
is taking me further away from home.
I guess I owe you for not leaving me out here.
I know you could travel a lot faster by yourself.
But I really hate that you don't take any notice of me.
Well, if you were talking to me in any language
I'd be looking at you.
That's a polite thing to do.
Jessie.
You said it.
You said my name.
I thought you didn't understand.
Jessie.
Jessie. That's my name.
What's your name?
Jessie.
Teel-O.
Teel-O.
Teel-O.
That's a nice name.
You look nice when you smile.
Teel-O, there's an old man in those rocks.
Didn't you hear me?
He might need help.
[speaking in Sioux]
What is the matter with you?
You helped me.
I just wanna see if he needs help.
I don't know what's the matter with you.
He might be dying of thirst.
Teel-O.
[speaking in Sioux]
[howling]
Sir.
I brought you some food and water.
But you've been out here all day in this hot sun.
You'll die.
I will die. Very soon now.
But I don't understand.
It is...the way.
I knew we should have come earlier.
When we first saw you.
But he wouldn't let me.
My grandson was right.
Your grandson?
His father forbade him to stay behind.
'But he would not listen.'
And so, he found you.
'It was written..'
'...so go now.'
My spirits call.
My time is here.
Teel-O.
[speaking in Sioux]
[continues speaking in Sioux]
[continues speaking in Sioux]
[speaking in Sioux]
I sure owe a lot to you, Teel-O.
If I was caught out here alone in this sandstorm
I probably would have just hugged the ground and died.
I keep forgetting that you don't understand what I'm saying.
Do you mind me talking?
Sometimes I think you can sense what I'm talking about.
Anyway, something happened to me today
when we were burying your grandfather.
I couldn't understand the words
you were saying over his grave but..
...I knew it was a prayer.
'Teel-O, it was so strange.'
I was talking to your grandfather
not more than a minute.
Then I saw him die right in front of my eyes.
But as I listened to you pray
not knowing what you were saying
I knew him.
I suddenly knew an old man
who wouldn't eat or drink and..
...said it was his time to die.
He even spoke English.
I guess he was a big chief.
Are you gonna be a big chief someday?
Keep forgetting that you don't understand my words.
I think you will be.
Big chief of your tribe.
[yawning]
I'm getting tired.
Jessie.
Jessie.
[coughing]
There isn't much water left.
[speaking in Sioux]
[male #1] 'You bloody savages.'
'I spent a month writing out those opinions.'
'You must have been swilling down a gallon of arrack'
'by the smell of you, you dirty, rotten..'
'Why you dirty rotten savages.'
'That's it. Destroy. Oh, just beautiful.'
'Destroy. You bloody savages.'
You bloody savages. I spent a month writing up those opinions.
Oh, I'd give my right arm to have you two beauties standing
before my bed some day.
I'll have you hanging by your scalps by the time the sun sets.
Oh. Just beautiful. Destroy what you can't use, you numbskulls.
[g*nsh*t]
[male #1] 'What're you aiming for?'
'Put a couple of holes in their thick skulls.'
'That's it..'
[g*nsh*t]
'Ha ha ha.'
'Run. Run.'
[laughing]
Run, you bloody red scavengers.
Run. Ha ha ha. Run.
'Ha ha ha.'
'I'd say here's a young man arrived at the opportune time.'
You're not the worst shot hereabouts but
you sure qualify to be his brother, I'll tell you that.
Try saying thank you before you start
criticizing my aim, mister.
It's alright.
I don't want to k*ll somebody unless I have to.
[grunting]
Well, I sure can't fault you for that.
Be a better country if more people had your views.
Help me pick up these papers, will you?
Papers?
You need an idea to exit here
before them renegades come back and lift
a couple of scalps.
If you spent all winter writing up these legal opinions
uh, you'd gamble a few locks not to have re-do all that work too.
'Anyway, those two were drunk when they jumped me.'
It's sleeping off time for 'em now.
By the way, my name is Daryl Rensen.
Luke...Smith.
Come on, boy, if you're gonna lie about your name
use some imagination.
Say that you are Luton G Hoffenfeather.
Nobody will give you a second look.
I'll have to remember that.
Rensen? That be Judge Rensen?
The same. We ever meet before?
Uh, no, just heard of the name.
'Maybe you got reason to stay clear of the law, is that it?'
Uh, well if it is it then be best I keep that fact to myself
wouldn't you say, judge?
Well, I believe in the scales balancing themselves out.
So you can just feel that I owe you.
Barring m*rder, mayhem, and r*pe, why, you can just consider
that the law owes you a favor.
Well, I never saw it necessary to commit any
of those crimes, judge.
I sure am glad to hear that.
Name's Luke Macahan.
Macahan?
If I remember right, my uncle Zeb said
you were a judge in Three Rivers.
Held a hearing on his k*lling of two men.
Zeb Macahan. Well, I sure do know Zeb Macahan.
Hey, uh. Isn't he heading up some sort of cattle drive
from down here using an all Indian crew?
Fact is they water near Stone Creek, east of here.
It's where I was heading when I spotted you.
I have to pass it en route to Los Meses.
I'll join up with you.
We'll, stop in , say hello. How's that?
It's a deal.
Hey, I sure am glad you saw me here.
That all that the law want you for?
Isn't that enough? sh**ting a sheriff?
You talk as if you didn't have
much choice in the matter.
About that horse stealing charge.
Might say I say didn't have much choice there either, judge.
It was either get out fast or get lynched without a trial.
Suppose you tell me exactly what happened, Luke.
I mean if you were wounded badly..
...how did you manage to travel all the way to Missouri?
Managed it mostly at night.
Walked some, got rides in a wagon
and in a river boat.
And it wasn't long after that Missouri had posters out on me.
[Luke narrating] Anyway, just kept heading in the general direction of home.
Was on foot crossing the Missouri border.
I was in uniform.
Came across a dead civilian so I changed clothes with him.
'Wait a minute, boy.'
'You telling me you were deserting from the army.'
No, sir.
I wasn't deserting anything cause I was never
in the army in the first place.
And I'll tell you about that later.
Sure picked the wrong man to change clothes with.
That boy sure is a picture of a peaceful soul, ain't he?
Morning, horse thief.
Wee, sheriff.
I ain't no horse thief.
You ride in on that there animal.
Yeah. I sure did.
But I didn't steal him.
I found him.
I can even vouch for that there statement.
Fact is I even witnessed this boy.
Finding my horse in my pasture.
Well, gimme a chance to explain, will you?
You say you put a b*llet in this fellow?
I don't see no wound.
Thought I did.
Saw him lurch clean over the horse's neck when I fired.
Hm. Told you I hit him.
Yeah, you hit him alright, mister.
As a matter of fact, he's dead right now.
See I-I found his body and the horse was standing
right next to him.
Why I? I just wanted to change clothes with him. That was all.
See I-I needed a horse cause I had to get to a doctor.
I'd to get to a doctor, my-my wound broke open
and it was bleeding again.
That story don't sit straight. Nohow.
Oh, I can prove it to you.
Yeah, I can prove it to you. I can take you to the body.
There's bodies scattered all over this countryside.
You traded clothes. What'd be the reason for that?
Why? I-I was still in uniform.
I had to get out cause I-I might be picked up.
What kind of uniform you talking about?
Union.
sh**t.
'Union Army.'
You're nothing but a deserting Yankee horse thief.
We've got us a rafter right here.
And a rope.
Deserves everything he's going to get.
Sheriff, I'm not a deserter or a horse thief.
In fact, I wasn't even in the Union Army.
'Look, my name is Luke Macahan'
and I come down from Nebraska looking for my pa.
It's this-this army patrols were short handed.
They put a uniform on me and they put a r*fle in my hand.
- Do any fighting? - Yes.
'Shiloh.'
'Sheriff, you're not going to let them hang me.'
You k*ll any Southern boys in that battle of Shiloh?
[dramatic music]
Help me.
I-I, a boy no older than me.
That's when I threw done my r*fle.
Sheriff, I was just so sick seeing that boy dying that I
just walked away from the w*r I wasn't supposed to be in.
No, wait. Sheriff. Sheriff.
Sheriff, I'm innocent.
Sheriff, you can't hang a man without a trial.
Man steals a horse in Missouri
he gets himself strung up on the same day.
Take it back. Stay back.
[g*nf*re]
Get him.
[g*nf*re]
Hyah, hyah hyah!
[instrumental music]
You say the sheriff denies that he and his men
were attempting to hang you.
Is that right?
They were in the papers.
Both of them swearing that they
were just trying to tie me up.
Not lynch me. Huh.
Well, you sure got yourself a problem, son.
I can tell you that.
[instrumental music]
Well, but some things could be proved, judge.
Like the fact that the horse Luke was riding
wasn't stolen by him.
He just found it.
No longer relevant.
In escaping from that town after wounding the sheriff
Luke was knowingly riding on that stolen horse.
Sure wasn't on my mind to be fussy about how I left town.
It seems to me a rank shame that Luke
can't be running around free after all this time.
By the way, he's gotta be looking back over his shoulder
a bronc in a corral's got more runnin' room than he's got.
Let me tell you somethin'.
I know how it is with all you politicians back in Washington.
'I mean judges, governors and such like 'at.'
You all eat from the same trough, so to speak.
[chuckling]
Well, I prefer her another analogy.
Alright, what's your point?
Well, point is, you figure
you owe Luke here a favor for what he done.
Alright, why don't you find somebody in Missouri
that can help him out
that you figure owes you a favor?
Alright.
Let's consider the options. One.
We could have Luke surrender himself in the state of Missouri
'and rely on the wisdom'
'and the mercy of the Missouri judge.'
'Course I don't imagine I'll hear
a great deal of applause
and loud stomping feet about that suggestion.
Oh, well..
As a professor that taught me the law once said
"Every lawyer worth his salt could find a loophole
in the ten commandments, if pressed."
Luke, I think that we'll have you arrested
in the territory of New Mexico.
In the judicial district over which I preside.
Wait a minute! I'm not wanted for anything in New Mexico.
Or are you sayin' I can get a fair trial from you
for what I'm wanted for in Missouri.
No. You still have to send trial in state of Missouri
where the alleged crime was committed.
That's our little loophole.
You see, Missouri would have to ask for extradition.
And I will simply recommend against the extradition.
Well, alright then. That'd take care of him in New Mexico.
But what about outside the territory?
Well, Missouri governor would pardon him.
A pardon?
'I do love a back door.'
And that's what we have here.
You see, the hearing under my jurisdiction would prove
that Luke Macahan was a victim of a crime.
[chuckling] Certainly not as perpetrator.
You sayin', that the governor of Missouri would
go along with your judgment on that?
Oh, I think, he'll trust my instincts.
Justice is being well served.
The same as I have trusted his on occasion.
'Oh, we may not use the same troughs, Zeb.'
But we both know where a few of the bodies are buried.
You and the Governor of Missouri buried some bodies, judge?
Well, that's figuratively speaking, son.
Ah, I m gonna have to remind myself
to stop using that expression, I guess.
[all laughing]
[horse clopping]
Well, judge, can't tell you
how much I appreciate what you're doing for Luke here.
His bein' wanted by the law
that's a mighty big concern to the Macahan family.
Well, I'm sure we can set that concern to rest, Zeb.
By the way, you know
Eastern newspapers are talkin' about Zeb Macahan
and his Arapaho drovers openin' up a new cattle trail?
Ha ha.
I know, we got a-ways to go 'fore that comes to a fact.
Are you sure, you can make it without me, uncle Zeb?
Luke, you just get that pardon.
Meet me when I bring this herd in.
We gonna have us a celebration.
Ha ha ha.
Well, I hope your uncle Zeb hasn't miscalculated
what it takes to move cattle up through the North West.
Yeah, I reckon, he sees some gambling to it.
Yeah, I guess, he does.
Well, we got a three day ride to Los Meses.
We better get started.
[instrumental music]
[horses clopping]
[music continues]
I don't believe it. I can't wait.
[water gushing]
[splashing]
[Jessie screaming]
Coyote?
[chuckling]
Unless, somebody is gutting on 'em.
Yeah!
Whoo! Oh!
[horses clopping]
The breed with him, huh?
It's more like white baggage to me.
Well, if you are right
she'll bring us a good price down the valley.
Come on! Let's go.
[horses clopping]
That felt so good.
La, Jessie.
You're remembering my name.
Teel-O!
Teel-O. Jessie!
Teel-O, Jessie!
That has a nice sound.
[dramatic music]
Something wrong?
Your horse is gone!
[music continues]
[horses clopping]
[footsteps]
Hey, let's go. Hah!
Let's get 'em.
[music continues]
[Jessie] 'Teel-O, what is it?'
'What's the matter?'
[music continues]
[horses clopping]
That gal didn't look too old.
I'd hold out for a fancy price for her.
'Five, maybe, six hundred dollars.'
- Up on the ridge! - Right, let's go.
[music continues]
Hey, let's go.
He's got the girl with him.
- There he is. - Alright!
You take him from the front.
I'll try to get behind him.
[music continues]
[horse clopping]
Stay with him. I'll back track the girl.
You make one move, bucko, you're in happy hunting grounds.
'Girl!'
You gonna come out of there, on your own?
'Cause if you make me come in there after you
'I'm gonna drag you out by your hair.'
You hear me?
'Come on! I know you in there.'
'Go!'
[horse clopping]
No sign of her?
Nah, she must have hightailed up in those rocks.
Maybe, they got a place they're livin' in
and she's headed there.
We can just buckle up the buck.
He's worth more hard money than she is anyway.
[instrumental music]
[music continues]
Los Meses where you spend most of your time?
Centrally located, but there are a lot of favorable places
like Cattlemen's Club here having a nice
spacious courtroom for major trial.
Overall, I found that, uh, Los Meses to be a particularly
warm and friendly town, in which they headquarter.
Yeah, I can...see how it grows on you real fast.
- Especially your courthouse. - Yeah, the courthouse.
Ha ha ha.
Hey, hey, watch that lady there.
Ha ha ha.
Young man, I hope we make it down to
livery stable before you fall off that horse.
[both laughing]
Here we are. Right here.
Yeah, I feel pretty good about meeting up with you, judge.
I see myself relaxing for a change.
Always got a...tight feeling coming into a strange town.
I mean, you know, being wanted by the law.
Well, since the w*r, Luke, there've been a lot
of young man in your position.
Victims of the time.
But they were still men strong of moral value.
We've gotta bind this country of ours together.
We collectively made mistakes..
...so collectively, we've gotta heal those wounds.
I can see now why my Uncle Zeb said
you were one of the smartest men he ever met.
Ah, he couldn't have said that.
That's what he said.
Yeah.
Ooh! Yeah there, thank you there, Chen or Wong or--
It's Lao Sen.
Howdy. Dave Russell. Marshall, Los Meses.
Ah, good to meet you, marshal.
Judge said you'd be coming over here to talk to me.
He filled me in on you coming out of this
with be a clean slate.
[chuckling]
I guess, you and judge are long-time friends, huh?
Uh, I don't wanna seem impolite, marshal, but, uh..
...you don't generally fool around with another man's g*n.
Luke, one of my duty is to take a g*n away from my prisoner.
Prisoner?
Well, you turned yourself in for stealing a horse, didn't you?
Ah, borrowing a horse is closer to the truth.
Well, in any event you sitting down in my jail, wearing a g*n..
[chuckling] It'd make a peculiar looking picture now, wouldn't it?
[chuckles] Yeah.
You know, I clean forget that
I was gonna have to stay a while in jail.
It's kinda technicality according to the judge.
Yeah, kinda.
Hmm, no notches.
Why should there be notches?
Well, you k*lled near half a dozen men, didn't you?
[sighing] It wasn't...half a dozen.
And I shot in self-defense.
Well, I'm not sure you did.
I don't see how a judge could be recommending an easy time
for a boy that commits himself half a dozen murders.
I'm sure, those men deserved what they got.
[sighing]
You, uh...aren't taking too kindly to me.
Oh, why would I not be taking kindly to you?
Hey, call me Dave.
No, I...I think, I better call you marshal.
Some truth to that, though.
You're not taking kindly to me?
You and me ain't even met before.
Why would I not be taking to you?
'All I know about you is that record the judge had me write.'
The killings, the horse, the..
Ha ha ha.
I mean borrowin' a horse.
Excuse my selecting the wrong word.
Putting a b*llet in the arm of Sheriff Martin Stillman.
Crippling a lawman.
That was an accident. Well, more or less, wasn't it?
No, marshal. It was no accident.
I see.
Well, boy...I'll be waiting at the jail
for you to turn yourself in.
