I'm Lana Scott. I'm 28.

I'm from Chesapeake, Virginia,

and I currently live in
Pasadena, California.

I always knew that I
wanted to be a singer.

In high school, I had a lot
of fun with musical theater.

In one show, I played
Tammy Wynette.

My grandma came and brought
flowers, and she was crying.

And she told me, "When
I see you doing country,

I feel like I see you."

I feel like she believed in me

before I even
believed in myself.

Three months after I moved
to L.A., she passed away.

As a country singer,
I get asked a lot,

"Why didn't you
move to Nashville?"

I think being surrounded
by different artists

of different genres keeps
me more on my toes.

For the past three years,

I've been living in
Pasadena, California.

I have two roommates, and
then we've got some chickens.

We have two eggs! Oh, my God!

We named them Tallulah, Nico,

and Milano, like
a Milano cookie.

We've got a chicken.

Sometimes they just
hang out in the front yard.

They're like cats. They
don't stray. So our neighbors,

they'll take selfies with them.

I've been wanting
this for a decade now.

I moved out here
to be an artist.

So being here at
"The Voice" to learn

feels just like the
next big step for me.

Being from Indiana, this
is like a dream come true.

It just doesn't get
better than this.

My name is Samuel Harness,

I'm 26 years old, and I'm
from Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Myself and all of my
siblings were adopted.

I have four other
siblings, so I'm one of five.

We weren't able to
physically have a family,

so it was great to take in
kids that needed homes.

And we ended up being
so blessed and blown away

by the joy that
they brought to us.

Samuel: My dad and his brothers,

they play in a bluegrass band
called the Harness Family Band.

Being able to see him onstage

and do what he loves
was extremely inspiring.

I love being a part of a family

with such a wide variety of
ethnicities and personalities.

Family goes beyond biology.

Growing up, I did have a
slight sense of abandonment.

It left a lot of
room for questions.

Who am I? Who am I supposed
to be? Where am I from?

There were times where I would
yell out at my adoptive parents

and be like, "You
don't understand me.

I just want to be around
my biological, real mom."

Those were sentences
I said pretty often.

I get emotional about that.

When I turned 18,

I was given the option to
reach out to my birth mom,

which I did.

Being able to meet someone
who had the same eyes as me,

who spoke in a
similar fashion as I do,

was extremely mind-boggling.

But it was very needed.

It gave me a sense
of understanding.

Ooh! That was a good one.

Fast-forward, I'm 26 now,
and I have a 4-year-old son.

To love unconditionally

is something that my
son has taught me.

That's why I'm so thankful
for my adoptive parents,

to be able to run back
to their arms and say,

"Thank you for everything
that you've done."

Struggling with
the idea of identity,

music was definitely
therapeutic for me.

The blind is really
special to me,

because it's lots of unique
sounds and unique people,

and so it kind of lines
up with my own life.

That resonates with
me, because right now,

I feel like I would be

because the vibrato and the
rasp that you were working with

was so unique and interesting
and signature for you.

that have so much rasp

in their voice don't
have the range.

I don't have the range to
execute what you're able to do,

and so I'm jealous.

Carolina: Currently, I'm trying
to save up enough money

for pharmacy school.

I am going to the
University of Nevada Reno,

and I am studying biochemistry.

It's very important
for my parents

that I end up with a good job

where the work is not
as physically exhausting

as what they've
had to go through.

Look, in Mexico, yeah. Mexico.

When we first got to Reno,
we lived in my uncle's garage.

Me and my brother
had little bunk beds.

And then right next to them
was my mom and dad's bed.

I wouldn't bring friends over
because I was embarrassed

I lived in a garage.

My parents did work super
hard to give us a better life.

My mom cleaned houses. My
dad's been doing landscaping.

I regret not being as
grateful when I was younger.

I think I definitely see it
more now that I'm older,

and I really see how
hard they worked,

and I'm very grateful.

My parents now live in a house
that they bought themselves.

It was a huge accomplishment
for them, and they were very proud.

Me at my elementary school.

When I entered kindergarten,
I only spoke Spanish.

I kind of kept to myself,
and my shyness just kind of

continued throughout
middle school, high school.

But my dad was always
in mariachi bands,

and I was like, "Oh,
I want to sing, too."

For the past seven years,

I've been singing with my
dad every Friday and Saturday

at a restaurant called La Fonda.

[ Singing in Spanish ]

We like to sing a
lot of different music,

but because it is a
Mexican restaurant,

our repertoire is
mostly Spanish music.

It's a huge song

and I feel like it shows that
I'm no longer embarrassed

of where I come from, who I am.

I'm 28 years old, and I'm
from Lockport, New York.

Joshua: I have never
done anything like this.

All the lights and cameras,

it's just such a cool
thing to be a part of.

My family is very musical,

so I kind of had that in me
just at a really young age.

But around 7 or 8, I
was put on steroids

for my asthma,
and it helped a lot,

but because of that, I
gained a lot of weight.

At my heaviest, I weighed
just over 300 pounds.

And it wasn't until my
senior year of high school...

I just had a moment
where I said,

"What am I doing? Like,
I want to live a long life,

and I don't want to be
just known as the heavy kid

that knows how to sing."

So I went from someone
who ate zero vegetables,

and now I'm pretty
much a vegetarian.

When you have all that
weight and you lose it all,

even if you don't
carry it physically,

I still carry it a
little bit mentally.

Being a part of the
musicals and drama club,

when I'm performing,
all those insecurities,

all those things that I was
dealing with, would go away.

It's just a way that I
can get through things.

In college, I put together

As the kids came along
and we settled down

into more of a stable life
here, I was a music teacher.

I've been teaching music
for about 25, 30 years.

It was amazing growing up
having a music teacher as a dad.

I never had to pay for
lessons or anything. [ Laughs ]

I started to play guitar
around the age of 6.

I kind of just picked up

on these classic folk
Americana songs.

I do have a special connection

to the concept
of a blind audition

where the only thing
that matters is the art

and who the person is inside.

I was born female, and
I never felt comfortable,

and it ate away at
me the more I grew up.

I remember at night
just laying in bed

and thinking, if I
could just wake up

as a completely different
person, I would do it.

I would give up
everything I have

to be able to live in
peace and live comfortably

without being
tormented internally.

I used to write in notebooks,

"I feel like a boy. I
want this so bad."

And I'd shred it up
into such tiny pieces

because I was so scared
for anybody to know.

It's a parent's job
to listen to your child,

even when it's hard
to understand them.

And that brought
forth extreme sadness

at not having understood

what he had been
going through for years.

The only way to feel like
me was to transition to male.

I dealt with a lot of
hateful comments,

whether it was from my
classmates or from teachers.

I wouldn't have been able
to get through high school

without music and without art

to express what I
was going through.

Sasha was always very strong.

And for parents, you
think that your kids

are gonna grow from

My name is Paris Winningham.

I'm 32 years old, and I'm
from Jacksonville, Florida.

The last decade or so, I
spent my time in the U.S. Navy.

When I was 20, I
decided to join the Navy.

I truly believe

that that was the best thing
that ever happened to me.

I've been to Australia,
Darwin, and Brisbane.

I've been to the Philippines,
Hong Kong, Guam,

Delhi, and Thailand.

In the Navy, I was
a machinist's mate.

We work down in the pit.
The pit is the engine room.

Basically, our job
is to keep the ship

moving through the water

and also keep the
water and the lights on.

[ Humming ]

When I was in the
Navy, my chief heard

that, yo, Paris can sing,

and so the first thing
they had me sing for

was the Navy's birthday,
and I sang the national anthem.

And when I got done,
everywhere I was walking...

"Dude, you can sing, man!"

But my naval
career ended in 2017

due to a knee injury,

and I was honorably discharged.

It gave me that push
to make the career

that I've always wanted,
and that was music.

To have an
opportunity like this...

I wouldn't exchange
that for the world.

My whole goal in life
was just to make music.

Yes. I got the opportunity now,

so thank God for
this moment. Yes.

Growing up, I had
three older brothers,

so I'm the youngest and
the princess, of course.

They've always been athletic,
playing baseball, football.

So I would sing

at all my brothers' games,

especially my eldest
brother, Corben.

I would follow him to
literally every tournament.

But I will never
forget that one day.

was going in for a tackle.

His facemask got stuck,

and when he landed,
he flipped over.

He severed his
spinal cord, so...

He was paralyzed on the scene.

Ronna: Corben had
to relearn how to live.

Cammy, in particular,
stepped up and was right there,

hands-on with Corben.

She gave up being a
little kid to take care of me

and do things that,
as her older brother,

I should have
been doing for her.

Corben has taught
me literally everything

that I carry with
me through this life,

'cause he's really the one
that has always consistently

pushed me to go to a
performing-arts school

so I could really,
really start singing.

That is exactly why I'm here.
