Daly: Let's meet
the first artist of the night.

Rio: Being on "The Voice,"
it's very exciting for me.

I love L.A. I love this set.

I wish my living room looked
[Chuckles] like this.

This is a lot different
than where I'm from.

My name is Rio Souma.

I was born and raised
in Detroit, Michigan.

Detroit is a very gritty city.

You have to be on your hustle

in order to make a living
for yourself.

And this city, for a while,

the economy wasn't
doing so well,

but I've seen
a lot of revitalization.

I would say that Detroit is
famous for, of course, its cars.

We have the Big Three
manufacturing plants.

I'm currently a production
assembly man at Chrysler.

I've been there
for the last three years.

I work on the assembly line
in the axle loop.

The car floats above us,

and they travel
on a conveyor belt,

and that carries
the shell of the car.

Every 45 seconds,
a new car comes,

and I drill in the fuel tank.

I'm under the car
with a hand drill

for 10 hours straight.

In a day, we do about 680 cars.

I actually like working
at the plant. It's great money.

It is a job that a lot of people
in this city covet.

But it's just
not where my heart is.

I want to do music.

Tishka: He's been pursuing this
since he was little.

Maybe high-school age,

it became a serious dream
for him.

[ Vocalizing ]

I've been wanting
to do music for so long,

I'm willing to leave my job
for it if I have to.

I love the fact that he works
and is gainfully employed.

But, I mean, I taught
my son and my daughter

"Reach for the stars.

I did 30 years
of the corporate America,

so I know, you know,

but I had two babies
to take care of.

"The Voice" is my chance to
break away from the 9-to-5 life,

and I am going for it
full force.

For my blind audition,
I'm gonna be doing

"Cruisin'" by Smokey Robinson.

I chose the song, of course,
to represent the city,

because it is definitely
a Motown classic,

but more so just to show that
you can take a Motown classic,

and you can make it powerful.

I cannot wait
to do my city proud,

do Motown
and Smokey Robinson proud.

I really wish my mom were here
to see me perform.

I remember telling her

"I'm about to give up
so much security

to chase this dream,"

and she was like,
you know, "I got you,"

and I'm so blessed to have
that type of support.

and that is literally one of
my favorite songs on the planet.

And when your voice came in,

it was just magical
from the very beginning,

because normally, that song
is completely falsetto.

It kind of drifts and floats,

but it doesn't have
the kind of power

that you brought to the song.

You showed us that powerful
chest voice that you had.

You showed us that piercing,

beautiful falsetto
that you have.

You did everything
with the song,

and you made it truly your own.

You deserve
to be a four-chair turn.

Who are you,
and where do you come from?

My name is Ryan Berg.

I'm 27 years old,
and I'm from Dallas, Texas.

Usually, when people see a guy
dressed up like a cowboy

from Dallas, Texas, they think,

"Okay, this guy's about
to sing some Hank here."

I listen to a lot of R&B.
I listen to a lot of soul music.

We grew up in kind of
Bible Belt Dallas, Texas,

to where the majority
of the population

is Southern Baptist Christians.

When I turned 18 years old,
my mom came out as a l*sbian,

and we experienced
a lot of judgment.

The community tended
to make us feel unwelcomed.

My mom stopped being invited
to certain things.

My dad, he was torn up,
as he should be.

The fact that your partner
of 30 years is walking away,

that's very emotional.

So it was a hard time
for my parents, of course,

but also for me to secure
that feeling of self-identity.

During that time,

music was definitely something
that I leaned on.

That's really
when I started writing.

So that situation
kind of propelled me

into being who I am today.

To this day, my mom is
definitely a role model of mine,

just in terms of her acceptance.

Now my parents
are both remarried.

They both have partners,

and I get to say
that I have three moms.

I feel love from them
constantly.

Since my journey here,

I've gotten three care packages
every week.

They're keeping me fed,

giving me skin products that
I don't know how to pronounce.

They're trying to get me pretty
for TV.

I cannot complain.

You look so cool!

My name's Becca Kotte.

I'm 33 years old,

and I'm from Fargo,
North Dakota.

Music has always been
a huge part of my life.

We were a very musical family,
always playing music at home.

I was in every church play
and musical

and got my degree
for musical theater.

And then I was lucky enough
to join the cast

of the Broadway musical
"Rock of Ages" in Las Vegas.

That show was loud and fun

and the perfect opportunity
for me to do my thing.

After "Rock of Ages,"
I was approached

with the opportunity
to audition as a backup singer

for Sir Rod Stewart.

I was this nerdy theater kid,
and then, all of a sudden,

I get approached to tour
with a rock legend.

Coming from a theater background
and playing a role

and, on the other hand,
being in the music industry

but backing someone up
and supporting them,

this is really the first time
that I'm stepping out

on my own as an artist.

So being able to participate
in "The Voice"

is one
of the greatest opportunities,

and I feel incredibly lucky
to be here.

Now I'm faced with
"Who am I as an artist,

and what do I actually bring
to the table

that isn't just
a supporting act?"

It's no secret that this
is a really tough business.

I've had a lot of successes,
but I've been told "No"

a hundred times more
than I've been told "Yes."

And so the fact that this
could be the opportunity

to take me to the next level
is pretty cool,

and I'm very grateful
for the opportunity.

I'm 30 years old.

I was born and raised
in Newport News, Virginia.

My family is deeply rooted
in the church.

My uncle is the pastor

of St. John's Church of God
in Christ.

[ Choir singing ]

I started singing when I was 6.

My first performance was
right here, on this altar.

They just sprung
this song on me,

and I'm like,
"I've never sung that song

in front of all
these people before."

My mom gives me a pep talk.

"I know you're nervous,
but you got to fight the nerves,

and you can't worry about
what people think."

[ Cymbal crashes ] Whoo!

I was stone-faced,
but I got through it.

[ Chuckles ]

My mom is definitely
my biggest fan.

She will make me sing
in a grocery store.

"Say, hey, baby, come over here
and sing for these people.

You already know you got it.
He gonna be famous one day."

You know what I'm
saying? Like, she's just
telling people about me.

I'm just like,
"Ma, I don't feel like singing

to these random people."

In 1998, my mom was diagnosed
with multiple sclerosis.

Dealing with her
being sick as a kid,

it's a weight like no other.

Taking care of her is
a big responsibility,

but I make it my business
to make sure

that she gets
to her medical appointments,

properly taken care of.

really still tight with my mom.

During COVID,
I have not been able

to spend much time
with my mother at all,

but I video-call her often.

I currently live

but I grew up in East Tennessee,
out in the country.

It was either you were
into hunting and fishing

or you were into bikes
and four-wheelers.

That was me. [ Chuckles ]

About the time I was
a senior in high school,

my brother, David, he had
a couple mountain bikes.

I immediately loved it.

I was a state champion

in mountain bike racing
at one point.

I spent the next 10 years

eating, sleeping,
and breathing bicycles.

It wasn't till
I was 30 years old,

I pulled an old guitar
out of the closet

that I had
since I was a teenager.

I knew three chords
from my teenage years

that my brother had taught me.

That led to an open mic

at a bowling alley,
of all places.

It scared me to death.

And I loved it.

Before you know it, I was
gigging every Thursday night.

I sing country music.

I can sing any other song
that you want,

but it's gonna come out
with a twang on it.

[ Chuckles ]

My brother started me
down a path.

Going back to music, he always
had this way of looking at me

that showed me how proud he was
of his little brother.

And...

And I lost him.

Just under a month
before my wedding,

I got the call one night
that I had lost my brother

in a motorcycle accident.

He never saw me play live,
you know?

It's a shame
he didn't get to see.

Since then,
I have had the opportunity

to play in front
of a lot of people.

You know, he started me
on that path without knowing it,

but it was still a priceless
gift that he gave me.

I'm on "The Voice" this season.

When I go through those doors
for the blind audition

for myself, for my family,

my wife, my brother,

I'm gonna give it
everything I got.

Once they start singing,
I get excited.

I always said

I wanted to be a pirate
when I grew up.

I think I chose a singer
over a pirate

instead of having to steal
things off of other boats.

I'm 29 years old.

I'm originally
from Lubbock, Texas,

but I currently live
in Nashville, Tennessee.

I work on a showboat.
We do two to three shows a day.

It's about
an hour-and-a-half-long show.

We have top deck music,

and we get to sing
really whatever we want

and then go back down,
and then we do the actual show.

About 10 minutes
before the show ends,

the boat gets back to dock,

and then we say,
"See you later," and they leave,

and then we get about


then we do it again. [ Laughs ]

It's a really
exhausting process.

And the dancing... oh, my gosh.

I mean, it's just
constant and nonstop.

So it's definitely a workout.

But it's a lot of fun, though.

You become a family
with your cast.

Really, they're some
of my best friends.

This opportunity would radically
change my entire life.

Do I love that I get to sing
and dance for a living? Yeah.

But to have the opportunity
to be able

to artistically pursue
what I want to pursue...

I mean, it's a dream come true.

For the blind audition,
I'll be singing

and I've totally made it into
more of, like, an intimate song.

It could be a risk,
but I would rather take a risk

I've been preparing,
really, since I was 2,

working really hard.

I've been on the showboat
for three years,

doing 13 shows a week sometimes
and up to 400 shows a year.

To be able to get coaching,
it would just change the course

of what I get to do
for a living.

This is absolutely my time.

April the 21st, my mom's dad
passed away from COVID-19,

and on April the 22nd,
my dad's dad passed away

from complications
with diabetes.

They didn't allow visitors
at the time,

so it was so hard for me

the fact that it happened.

where I'm still grieving,

but what keeps me going is

the fact that I'm just
so excited to be here.

And so I promised myself
that I'm gonna be

the greatest that I can be
from here on out,

because I know that this is what

both of my granddads
would want for me to do.

I was born right next door
to the St. Thomas projects.

I'm the oldest
of eight children.

A lot of laughter,
a lot of singing.

I was taught early on
to go after my dreams

and to also help people
along the way.

Even as a student
in high school,

I started being a big sister
to little girls around me,

which led to me starting
my own mentoring program,

helping young girls
to grow into young ladies.

I created
"Daughter of the King 101,"

a handbook
to just kind of give them

some guidelines throughout life.

There is 101 rules in the book.

One of the most important rules
is to not gossip.

Another one is to be kind,
polite, well spoken,

and think before you speak.

Another one is "Be yourself,
no one can do it better."

I've met a lot
of really dope women

working with neighborhood girls,
so when I got married,

I had 34 bridesmaids
in my wedding party.

It was a dream come true.
That's all I could say.

It was beautiful.

I've been on this journey
since about 19.

I started doing corporate bands
to help me get through college,

to help pay for my bills,
my rent.

But it didn't allow much time
to focus on my own music.

I've always felt like
I've had an older soul.

In elementary school,

my friends would be
the lunch ladies

and my friends' parents.

We'd make jokes

and listen to old '60s stations
on the radio.

My style of music is
a little bit country,

a little bit bluegrass,
a little bit rockabilly.

Starting to play music live
when I was 18.

After three years of playing,
I was on my first tour,

and I had the opportunity
to audition for "The Voice."

Right before I was set
to fly out,

I found out I was pregnant.

I had this really great
opportunity,

and I couldn't do it.

Michelle:
Can you color it for me?

How cute is that?

That time was very,
very difficult for me,

but there are a few things
that made it worth it.

I was able to spend
all day with Liam,

and when he would go to bed
at night, I would go play music.

So I got to have the best
of both worlds that way.

Liam's dad left the picture
when Liam was 2 1/2.

My life did change.

But my favorite thing
about being a mom

is probably knowing that

there is somebody that will
love me no matter what.

The first few years,
I couldn't just take any gig.

I couldn't play for free.

I did quite often think that
I would have to give music up.

But then I met my partner,
Andrew.

We met at a speakeasy
here in Salt Lake.

If Andrew weren't here,
there's no way

I would be able to have
this experience.

It's a wonderful bonus for me
to meet the woman of my dreams,

but also to have another son
of my dreams.

So it's incredible.

was very difficult.

I've never had the kind
of support that I do right now.

You know, I'm a little
bit country. I got you.

My name is Desz,
and I'm from Houston, Texas,

and I'm 30 years old.

It feels really good to be here.

My mother discovered
that I could sing

'cause I was extremely shy
as a child.

I remember being in the car
with her.

There was a song playing,

and she heard me
singing it with her.

She said, "Baby,
when Mommy goes to glory,

I want you to sing
this song for me."

You know, I'm 11.

I'm just like, "You're gonna
die when you're 100."

But I wouldn't even say
it was a month later,

she had a heart attack
and an aneurysm simultaneously,

and she passed.

[ Voice breaking ] My first time
publicly singing out...

was at her funeral.

Every time I sing,
I sing for her.

[ Sniffles ] Because I know
that's what she wanted for me.

That moment was
the hardest moment of my life.

It was a brave, beautiful thing
she did.

Wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Singing for her helped heal me.

A fire was ignited inside of me.

I joined the school choir.

I ended up getting
a scholarship.

I majored in opera
and classical music.

I was able to sing with
the Houston Symphony

and the Houston Opera.

I spent 10 years gigging,

but I felt like I ended up
in a routine.

I said, "Hey, Mom,
I know you're looking after me.

We're gonna make this work."

I ended up auditioning
for this guy on Instagram.

Two weeks went by,
and then I got a text.

"Congratulations,
Mrs. Washington.

You made the Kanye West
Coachella Choir."

And I was just, like, screaming
on the top of my lungs.

I was running around
the house... ♪ Ahhh ♪

I was just singing, screaming,

So, after Coachella,
we traveled the world...

New York,
my hometown, Houston, Texas,

Jamaica.

We performed
