and I'm just looking forward

to taking the trophy back.

I feel like he's had
a few years of not winning,

and it may have humbled him

and he is so good at it.

straight seasons, I feel like.

Taryn: My name is Taryn Papa.
I'm 30 years old,

currently living
in Nashville, Tennessee.

Growing up, my grandparents
had a piano,

and my grandfather would play.

Through that,
I fell in love with music.

It kind of grew
to almost like a family band,

and the kind of music
we played was Kelly Clarkson,

and I actually sang
Gwen Stefani, too.

Now that I'm sitting here
thinking about it, that's crazy.

I was in high school when
my grandfather got Alzheimer's.

He would sit,
and I would play for him,

and he would say,
"I think I know that song,"

and it would kind of
bring him back.

And that's when I learned
that music has a time

and a place and a feeling,

and that's what kind of
drew me to country music

and the storyteller aspect

and how it's three chords
and the truth.

I had just moved to Nashville
when my grandfather passed away,

and it was devastating.

But I know that being here,
he would have loved that.

[ Cheers and applause ]
There are four or five

female fronted bands
on Broadway right now,

and I'm one of them.

As a female artist, you kind of
have to prove yourself

and you have to fight
for your gigs.

I was singing at Blake's bar,
Ole Red, in Nashville,

so meeting Blake would be
a full circle moment.

I would love to work with him.

The past few months have been
extremely difficult.

Being on "The Voice" will
open doors as a female artist

to be heard and respected.

My grandfather, I would love him
to know how far I've come,

but I believe that he's watched
my whole journey,

Seven years.

I was in Nashville
for seven years

before I got my first song out.

Wow. And now isn't

that a coincidence?

Gwen: I feel like I'm losing

right now, but I feel like
I have a chance.

When you were so full
of gratitude and shock

and you were in the moment,

as a singer, I could hear that.

As soon as there was a turn,
I lost everything.

And I was like, "Keep singing,
just keep going."

Like, I'm very similar to that.

So I feel like we could work
really well together, you know?

What did you listen to
when you were a teenager?

I sang in a band for years,
and it was you guys.

In country music in general,

there's really no other
current female vocalist

that really sings the way that
like a Trisha Yearwood

or a Martina. 100%.

And so it seems like there's
a lane wide open there

for a girl with a voice like
yours, that's that powerful,

somebody who's willing
to swing for the fence.

what it takes to fill that lane.

Liam: My name is Liam St. John.

I'm 29 years old, and
I'm from Spokane, Washington.

This is my hometown.

My real name is Shannon Winant.

Let's be real. You thought
it was a girl's name.

[ Laughs ]

Feels cool now,
but when you're a second grader,

it just feels like
you're not one of the cool kids.

I was born in a car
in the hospital parking lot.

I always like to tell people

that my mom delivered
her own baby. [ Chuckles ]

My mom worked incredibly hard.
She was a single mom.

She's my absolute hero.

And she has always been one

to push me towards goals
and dreams.

Soul music was the way I learned
how to express myself.

But I kept music
on the back burner

because I was so consumed

with the idea of being
a professional athlete.

I have been jumping on, off,
and around things my whole life,

jumping off stairs, my roof.

I got blessed with springy legs,

and so naturally I became
a long jump and triple jumper.

I just fell in love with it.

It's just like an art form,

and that ignited a dream in me
to become an Olympian.

And it stuck with me
for 21 years.

I got the opportunity to do
track and field in college

and then eventually
got the opportunity

to go compete overseas
in South Africa.

I was competing with the best
in the world,

and that's kind of where
I realized that was my peak.

It was kind of like handing off
the baton from track and field

to pursuing this lifelong
burning passion of mine to sing.

January 2018, dropped a single,
formed a band by June.

And then by the next January,

we were opening up
for Jacob Banks,

one of my absolute
favorite artists.

It was like my head had come up
above the clouds.

I felt like my true self
for the first time.

And it was just so clear,
this is what I want.

Knowing I'm about to perform
for these four coaches,

these legends, I'm just feeling
grateful that we still

get to come and sing
during this COVID madness.

The stage is my happy place.
It's where I feel most alive.

"The Voice" stage a show.

there may be

some hearing issues,

overall personality

I will say, if there's

My name is Faye Moffett.
I'm 35 years old,

and I'm from Tulsa, Oklahoma.

I have been playing
almost every venue in Tulsa

for the past 10 years.

When the pandemic hit,

you know, I had just picked up
some really amazing gigs.

Unfortunately, a lot of them
were canceled.

This opportunity,
it was like a light

at the end of the tunnel.

I grew up with five sisters
in a very small house

with just my mom.

She loved music.

She introduced us
to Betty Wright,

Whitney Houston, Anita Baker.

At 10, I had the honor
of performing for Rosa Parks.

She is a very important part
in Black history

and the Civil Rights movement.

She was right there
in the front row

and looked at us
the entire performance.

That is when I really knew that
I wanted to be a performer.

Growing up,
my mom would work overnight.

She always provided for us.
We never went without.

But after school,
I would work part time

just for extra money.

I didn't want to burden her.

So... I'm crying.

Um, my mom has been taking care
of people all of her life.

Now I'm ready to take me
a day off.

Mm. It's hard.

You need a self care day,
a day for yourself.

I know that's right.

My mother definitely
helped me get to this point.

She gave me the strength
to endure a lot of closed doors

and a lot of rejection.

Difficult times have
their challenges,

but they can also create great
opportunity for personal growth.

of emotional change.

About six years ago,
life was getting tough,

being a parent, I'm at work,

and stress really started
to hit me.

And it was very overwhelming,

and I didn't know
how to deal with it.

Later, it was diagnosed
as depression and anxiety,

and so my only outlet
from that experience

was to take it to music.

And so I started writing music
about how I was feeling,

and it felt like that was
the only thing I could really do

to get out what was
going on inside.

I was able to use this pain
to create a positive outcome.

my freshman year of college,

my friend and I went on

and then I was in Nashville,

and I started
singing on Broadway.

A lot has led up to this day.

I'm so excited to be here.

Music and art has been
a part of my life

since I was 4.

I started in dance.

I took all different kinds...

Tap, jazz, hip-hop, ballet...

And then I got into theater
when I was about 11.

But then when I was 15,

I started having this headache
every single day.

It took two years to figure out

that I have
Ehlers-Danlos syndrome.

It's a connective tissue
disorder.

Sia has it...
She just announced last year

that she has this syndrome.

My joints are very loose.

Certain movements can cause
a lot of pain for me.

I was so ready to do
a musical theater degree,

but it was taking a toll
on my body.

Dance movements
and things that I was doing

was actually causing the pain.

Singing allowed me
to express myself in a safe way.

Music saved me

during the hardest time
of my life.

I actually started doing

I work on a hemp farm
with my cousin Ryan.

The farm that we're on
is 33 acres.

But we don't just grow
for flower.

and things like that to be

used for textiles, fabric,
paper, and medicine for people.

Here on the hemp farm,

there's always
something to be done.

But for some of us,
we have a winding road.

been a love for me.

My mom dumped me in a choir

when I was 9 years old
with my sister,

and we both took to it.

that I could actually
go after something

that I wanted
since I was young?"

To me, it's really emotional

In high school,
I went to school for music

Last year, 2019,

I had the opportunity
to do an urban showcase

with an 11-piece band

and perform in front
of 3,000 people

and sing all
of my original songs.

It was so beautiful.

Nobody in my family
is musical at all

except for my grandfather,

whom I never heard speak.

He had his voice box removed
before I was even born,

so I never heard him sing.

It felt like he was, like,
locked in this cage.

My junior year,
my birthday was on one day,

and the next day,
my grandfather passed.

My heart broke.

Kiari: My name is Kiari Mhoon.

I am 26 years old.

I currently live
in Fayetteville, North Carolina,

right outside of Fort Bragg,

in which I currently
serve on that base

as a sergeant
in the United States Army.

The feeling that I get
with putting on the uniform

is a feeling of purpose.

You are part of
the world's biggest team.

I started dancing
when I was 8 years old.

Growing up, I had a lot
of pressures around me,

like gangs or drugs,

and dancing was
a way of coping with stress.

One day,
my dance instructor was like,

"We're gonna actually
have you sing a little."

I'm just like, "Oh, man, not me.

I can't do it."

Obviously, I did it.

And it was an all-time high
for me.

Growing up,
we didn't have a lot of money,

and my mom,
she did it all... two jobs,

walking to work in the rain,
sleet, or snow,

'cause at the time,
we didn't even have a car.

She is my super hero.

So, after high school,
I joined the army

because my family needed money.

My family needed help.

I knew I had a talent,
but that means nothing

if my family isn't
taken care of.

I was very nervous

being a g*y man going
into the military,

because I didn't know
what to expect,

but me just being myself,

I was accepted by the army
and by my fellow soldiers.

I'm a vocalist for
the 82nd Band and Chorus.

I sing at sporting events
and military ba*ls.

Going for a little jog.

One of the biggest things for me

is meeting my husband, Darion.

He's actually in the military,
as well.

We've been married
for four years now.

to harness that vibrato

I am from Richmond, Virginia.

I grew up in a town called
Branchville, Virginia.

It's a population
of about 100 people,

and there's not much there
at all.

So music was my... my friend.

My journey from Virginia
to L.A. for "The Voice,"

I took a train.

[ Whistle blows ]

It took me about 74 hours.

Took a train 'cause
I absolutely loathe flying.

I'm not a fan of being crammed

into a metal tube


Not my idea of a good time.

What's going on in my mind is,
"Please don't crash."

So, I'm usually
a pretty scatterbrained

and nervous individual,

and music's one of the things
in my life that allows me

to keep
some kind of calm and peace.

When I got my first saxophone,
I was 6.

There were no kids growing up
with me,

so literally,
I played with records.

That was my play time.

So there's this picture of me...

It's definitely
in junior high...

With the saxophone
and these glasses,

but I feel like I look
like the biggest dork.

He was a chubby boy,
loved to eat.

He used to tickle me to death
'cause he says,

"Where's my cummerbund?"
