When I was 20, I started really playing music,

But when I was 22,

I had a little girl -- my daughter, audrey.

At first, when audrey was born,

I wasn't playing as many shows

But at a certain point, her mom and I decided

About four years ago, I started mowing lawns,

And I still cut grass to this day.

When I had my little girl,

But now I couldn't imagine her not being there.

I'm 23 years old, and I am from miami, florida.

My mom was a professional model.

She actually did the first victoria's secret catalog.

And I did want to get into modeling
-
'cause I thought it was so cool that she was a model.
-
So when I was 13, I started my modeling career.
-
I did a few things for nivea and a few, like, teen magazines.
-
But then I went through a very awkward stage in high school

Where I gained well over 40 pounds,
-
Because I was focused on being a teenager.
-
So, I stopped modeling,
-
And it was sort of a humbling experience,
-
Because going from being skinny and modeling
-
To being, like, kind of an overweight teenager --

It was difficult.

I guess I sort of went on a soul-searching adventure.

I packed up all my bags, sold my car,

And I moved to paris kind of on a whim.

At the time, I had been studying classical music.

I'M LIKE, "OKAY, I'M GONNA SING IN CAFéS.

It's gonna be a piece of cake."

Well, it wasn't really a piece of cake.

But going there really made me realize, like,

"This is what I need to do.

I need to go back to miami, start gigging, start writing."

And I did that.

I am so proud of my daughter.

I'm 54 years old, and I'm from austin, texas.

Growing up, my family was pretty poor.

I was in the cotton fields, working,

When I was 12 years old.

It was a hard life, but it was a good family.

And, you know, well, it taught me a lot about hard work.

I can tell you that much.

The biggest struggle I've ever had is that I'm a black albino.
-
What that means is that I don't have any pigmentation.
-
And there's a huge vision problem that comes with it.
-
I'm legally blind.
-
GROWING UP IN THE '60s, YOU KNOW,
-
And going to school at a difficult time
-
In the nation's time,
-
I was the only albino child in the school where I went to,
-
Which was an all-black school.
-
It was tough 'cause I looked so different.
-
People just looked at me strange, like I was a sideshow freak.
-
I just felt I couldn't connect with the other students.
-
I was picked on. It was incredibly painful.
-
The pain kept driving me to do something.
-
And I needed to be different
-
If I was gonna continue in this life.
-
And so I started singing.
-
I do some soul, rock. I've even done country.
-
I've been lucky enough
-
To work with great bands and work with great folks.
-
I got a chance to be on the b.B. King tour.
-
I know, for me, that it's freeing, and I love doing it.

One of the first things I learned about singing --

When I got under the lights, I couldn't see the crowd.

It kind of feels like you're all alone,

And I can express myself better that way.

When I was 9 years old, my dad lost his job.

And from then on, she stopped charging us for vocal lessons,

Until my dad could get us back on our feet.

Their family has experienced some heartache.

I am 21 years old, from yakima, washington.

I've been working with the fire services

For about six years now.
-
I started when I was a junior in high school.

I just fell in love with the adrenaline of the job,
-
Also, you know, being able to help people.
-
Being a firefighter is in my blood.
-
My oldest brother got into firefighting
-
A couple years before I did,
-
And my cousin worked for the forest service.
-
And, unfortunately, she died in the thirtymile fire,
-
Which was in washington in 2001.
-
I remember being at that funeral and hearing the bagpipes,
-
And to this day, you know, for a firefighter,
-
Hearing those bagpipes is kind of chills up your spine.
-
As a mom, what are you thinking about
-
Knowing that your son's on the line?
-
Definitely makes you afraid.
-
You start listening to the scanners
-
And trying to figure out where they are and if they're safe.
-
Right. Wow. No wonder you want to get into music.
-
Yeah. - yeah.
-
I had a very, very happy life being a firefighter,
-
But as far as my safety and really what I want out of life,
-
Music's gonna be able to give that to me
-
In a lot more ways than firefighting would.

Having a chair turn around

And getting that validation from one of my heroes --

It would mean the world to me.

If somebody that does it for a living

Listens to your voice and hits that button,

That means that they believe in you,

That they want to help you.

So that would be a huge boost in confidence for me.

I'm nervous, but it's about controlling your fears.

My mom played the drums at church.

So music is just something that has always been in me.

When I was 17 years old, I had an opportunity

To play guitar for a christian rock band.

Together, we sold close to 300,000 records,

And we got a bmi award

For top-five christian song played of the year.

OUR BASS PLAYER, RON McCLELLAND,

Was my best friend and music mentor.

He was always driving me to write, to sing, to record.

And my third or fourth year into the band,

Ron passed away suddenly.

And after that, it wasn't the same,

And we decided to, you know, call it quits.

I took about a year off from music.

And if there's one thing

That ron would have wanted me to do

Is to keep driving, to keep going,

To keep writing, to keep singing.

And so I picked it up

And I started playing again, I started singing again,

And now I'm here at "The voice."

I look at my life,

And it's really like a roller coaster,

Because I went from playing guitar in front of mass crowds

To playing at bars.

You know, it pays the bills, and I appreciate it very much,

But it's not quite getting me at that level of where I was.

And so it means so much for me to be here,

And it's an honor, really.

They were the ones that were buying me guitars
