We found third-generation
body-shop worker James Massone
at the family business in Boston.
I do body work, prep cars,
a lot of screaming from my father.

During the blind auditions,
he turned three chairs.

I was so pleased

incredible personality onstage,
and I don't feel like I'm
gonna really be showcased well
in this scenario.
The song that I chose
had a lot to do
with the artist that sings it
being a piano player,
and that was what really struck
me about your performance.
I loved turning around
and seeing you playing piano.
But it also has a really
fun swagger, confidence to it
that I think you will bring to the table.
So I chose "Love Song" by Sara Bareilles.
It's just a sweet, fun, great song.
I did not ever think
I'd be paired with Nicolle.
She's good at the piano.
She has this sweet
little country voice to her.
You know, I don't have that to offer.
It kind of scares me.
I'm excited.

During the blind auditions,
country-singing pianist Nicolle Galyon
sang "You Save Me."
I grew up playing classical piano
and became a songwriter and then a singer,
but I'm still very much growing into that.
I didn't sing in front of a soul
till I was 20 years old,
and it's nerve-wracking
to think of myself as a singer.
She got the attention of Adam,
who was quick to share
with the other coaches
how much he believed in her.
Stupid! You guys are dumb!
You were so special,
and I'm so happy I have you.
Nursing student Mathai
was looking for her parents' approval
to follow her dream of becoming a singer.
She just went into college,
and I wanted her to finish
that four years of college.
Maybe I'm supposed to be a
doctor or a nurse in the future,
but right now,
this is what I'm supposed to do.
♪ But rumor has it I'm the one
you're leaving her for ♪
Mathai made her parents proud,
turning three of the coaches' chairs...
I'm really, really desperate
to have you on my team,
'cause I love you.
...picking Adam as her coach.
Now that the battle is set,
it's time for Mathai
and Nicolle's first rehearsal.

a little intimidating for me.
I'm still on the edge a little
bit about what to do piano-wise.

she's gonna be singing there.

I just want to prove
that I can sing, you know?
I mean, that's why I'm here.
My hurdle in this is to really
be able to connect with a crowd
while my foot is tied down to a pedal
and my hands are tied down to keys.
Can I connect with my eyes?

I feel like Mathai is this pure thing.
You know, and as her coach,

And you have such a natural ability
that it's almost taken for granted,
so it's almost giving reverence
and allowance for these people.

Yeah, you're honoring
the audience's surprise
and not taking it for granted,
and then it winds up doing
what Adam just spoke about,
which is some of the notes get longer,
and you paint a little more.

on things that I actually
wouldn't have thought of.

times, you're so used to it.
And so I really have to

but I think breathing affected
your performance a little bit,

Nicolle, we've seen
some dynamic performances,
and I'm gonna be honest.
Mathai, you just really
brought the energy.
You were very confident.
I think this is a hands-down no-brainer.

that I put you guys together
was because you guys are musicians,

I think it's gonna be something
you can get really into.

my mom left me and my dad.
I was reckless, and eventually,
I landed myself in jail.
And Orlando's world did change
when Adam pushed his button.
It's a thrill to see him do something
that I always wanted to do
and do it better.
We met shy country singer Karla Davis
at the blind auditions
singing "If I Die Young."

I've only been singing
for like three years.
I was in college, and I had
just stopped playing soccer,
and so I started singing,
and I was afraid
to sing in front of people,
but one of my friends convinced
me to go to an open-mike night,
and from then,
I was completely comfortable.
And her unique sound paid off...
There's something really pure
and kind of perfect and amazing
about your voice.
...landing her a spot on team Adam.

With just a few days before the battle,
Orlando and Karla meet with Adam

to make me see something

and he wants to do it differently.

and there's greatness in that,
and I think that his style

If you asked me
to sing it right now,
it wouldn't work out real well.
I'm not real familiar with it at all.
I like this battle,
because you're so completely
different from each other.
Jordan, you have
that country rasp in your voice,
and, Naia, you have that
laid-back quality in your sound.
This should be a really good battle.
Jordan's country as dirt,
and I chose a reggae pop song,
which lends itself
a little bit more to Naia,
but Jordan is the one that
probably has the opportunity
to really blow people away

performing on the streets of Santa Monica.
I've been doing street performing
with my little brother and my boyfriend.
We are basically here
four to five days a week,
making our living.

high-school student Jordan Rager
showed up with more
than just a passion for music.
What's the main reason
you want Blake to turn around?
Hopes that I might get to meet his wife.

I started playing at bars
when I was about 16 years old,
and I started getting places
that were offering to pay me to come play.
It's how I make my money back home.
And Jordan's country rasp
caused Blake to push his button...
You're the first real country singer,
and I'm the only one here that gets it.

Now that the battle is set,
Jordan and Naia meet with Blake

I found out my adviser

She's been so successful,
and I think it's great to have somebody

what we're going through,

when it came to, you know,
finding her commercial success.

all these crazy high notes,
but I feel nervous, because
I'm not always consistent.

Naia knows who she is
as an artist,
so she's very committed
in all of her melodies.
It fits this perfectly.

But I think the bar might be
a little higher for Naia
just because it is basically her niche...
that whole feel of a song...
so it's a good thing and a bad thing.
You're hitting notes that I would
never have even thought to go for.

Yeah, it's very cool,
so feel free to do that
if you feel like it is.

But having said that, though,
I would save the tricks
more towards the end, you know
what I'm saying, the vocal tricks.

My concern for Naia is not losing herself.

I'm trying not to throw up right

a really solid performance
the whole way through.
You kind of stayed in the
same pocket, in the same tone.
Naia, you had a little more
of a natural groove with it,
but you did stray off
a little bit at the end
when you were trying to
hit some of those notes
and things like that, but
for my own personal preference,
I would have gone with Naia.

Jordan, I remember you
from the blind auditions,
and you have a very strong voice,
and I would have loved to see
you be a lot more confident,
you know, but, miss Naia,
this song was just very natural for you,
and it seemed like it was themed
all around that island flavor,
and that's home for you, right?
So, if I had to pick somebody,
of course, naturally,
it would be you, miss Naia.

I think that, Jordan, I really
applaud you, 'cause I feel like
you're maybe a little bit
outside your comfort zone
on this one.
There were a couple little
pitch issues, I think,
that were bumming me out
a little bit, and nerves,
and I think that I would have to
go with Naia.

thoughts on the overall battle.
I'm surprised that Naia
was as nervous as she was.
I didn't expect that.
The song, like everybody's saying,
it is more her thing,
you know what I mean?
I heard you miss some notes there.
Some of them just weren't there at all.
It was just breath.
That's all that came out, you know?
Jordan, you stepped up.
I mean, you really did.
It's interesting
to hear how far you've come
from the first time you heard that song,
but there was a lot of pitch things,
especially when it got to
the harmony parts,
on both of y'all's sides, by the way.
I mean, I'm really surprised by that.
Man, this sucks.
You know, I think with it being
kind of an even performance
on both of y'all's parts,
I'm gonna have to go with...
...with experience and pick Naia.

From day one, I told her, I was like,
"if you're gonna beat me,

so she did better than me.
Of course, I'm so psyched
that I get to move on,
but I just felt like
if I was gonna win this,
I wanted to win it because I did well,
but I'm psyched
that I'll get the opportunity
to redeem myself.
I still think he hasn't
reached his full potential yet,
but Jordan will be ready
one of these days.

Alicia Keys' backup singer Jermaine Paul,
indie artist Charlotte Sometimes,
young country hopeful Raelynn,

six artists could win this show,
so it's my job to figure out
which one of them it is
and go on to win "The Voice."

Who will be the last artist
heading to the live shows

For this battle, Tony.
Justin.
The song you'll be singing together
is "Faithfully" by Journey,
one of my all-time favorites.
I think Justin is amazingly
talented as a vocalist.
But what he and I do
are so very different,
so I'm gonna find it really interesting
to see how the two of us
really pair together.
I picked this song because it's epic,
and I would just love to hear
both of you tear this song down.
Tony's got
a higher range than I do.
He's done a lot of Broadway
work, and his voice is huge.
I've done a lot of dive bars,
so it's gonna make it tough,
but I'm hoping that I have the voice
to touch the hearts of people
on the ground level.
During the blind auditions,
family man and former last-call
house band member Justin Hopkins
sang "Babylon," getting Cee Lo
to push his button.

You actually got a very unique voice.
I want to help polish
and refine what it is
that you do have naturally,
and I also want people
to bear witness to growth.
You know, I'm not getting any younger,
and I've been working my whole
career for this opportunity.
During his blind audition,
expectant father
and Broadway singer Tony Vincent
sang "We Are The Champions,"
impressing Cee Lo.

I love your voice. Great performance, sir.
Broadway has been a total
blessing for me in my career,
but my heart really lies
in pop/rock worlds,
and it's a place
that I really want to return.
With the match-up set,
Justin and Tony are ready
for some coaching from Cee Lo.
I'm intimidated by Tony's range.
I don't know who isn't.

Justin's a very talented vocalist,
and even though I've come from
a theater background,
that doesn't mean that
I necessarily have a leg-up.

and I think he cares so much
about the material,
it justifies that what
we're doing is really right.
Where we are, especially
with wives and kids...

It's nice to not be alone,
to have that connection with other artists
who are actually living their reality
and share that same sacrifice.
With the battle
approaching, Cee Lo brings in
legendary music producer
Babyface to advise Tony.

The only thing is the very ending,
whether or not
those last notes can be done
with your natural, as opposed
to going to the false.
It'll have to be a mix
in order to go there.
Instead of going, "faithfully,"

And it's just holding it strong.
Tony's a pro, so he's not gonna
go at anything halfway.
He's just looking for not so
much "what are my weak points?"
But "do you see any place
where I can improve?"
'Cause if you go to the false immediately,
it feels like you just couldn't
reach the note.

Just having a chance to get feedback
from these two individuals
who are just the A-game
of music and production,
it was an awesome opportunity.

I've always felt that my voice,
and the fact that it was
as rough as it was,
was something I've tried to avoid,
and then to hear somebody
point out your strengths,
it just gives you kind of a bull's-eye,
you know, a target that you're aiming for.

You're gonna k*ll this one, just like...
Justin is a diamond in the rough.
He sings straight from the gut.
It's still a toss-up, though,
'cause, you know, I respect them both,
and I appreciate them both,
and I enjoy them both.

Based on what I saw,
I would probably go with Justin,
but you were both great.
