04x02 - A Summer Madness

Post by bunniefuu »

He's dead.

He's dead, my Topper.

He's gone from me.

I--I thought he was asleep.

But then he was just gone.

Honey, he was old.

I'm alone so much,

we never have friends over anymore.

You ought to go out.

Where should I go?

Anywhere. A movie, the park.

Molly, there's no food in the house.

You could go shopping, take the car.

The poor dog.

Molly, for God's sake, get out.

Get some air.

I mean, visit some.

We'll meet later.

I'll be working.

Again?

I'm on a big case, Molly.

Every night, Robbie.

He works every night.

Hi, Jeff.

You all right?

Hi, Molly.

Topper died.

Oh, I'm sorry.

We bought him for Robbie.

Yeah, I know.

Oh, he was a personality pooch.
I really liked him.

Oh, look, I'll--I'll call the SPCA, okay?
And have him picked up.

He's not garbage.

He'll have a funeral.

Oh, I'm sorry, Molly. Of course.

Hey, look, you know, there's some
great pet cemeteries out there in Queens.

Do they have trees?

Oh, yeah.

And flowers and
grass and like that.

Topper liked that. Robbie liked grass, too.

Robbie liked grass, too.

See you.

You remember Robbie?

I have.

Fine boy.

He died, too.

Hey, Jeff, slow down.

A son, a dog.

Maybe if she gets out, get some air.

Who knows what's going
to take the snapper out of it?

How about time?

My wife, my son.

He's dead and she's alive.

I did it to both of them.

What kind of self pity is that?

Theo, it was an accident.

I was only careless the
way millions of parents

are careless around
their kids every day.

But he's still dead.

She's been dying ever since.

I always close that locker except for
one afternoon. One afternoon, Theo.

My son in a can of benzine.

Well, if you're expecting words
of wisdom from the sage of Sparta,

don't hold your breath.

But I do know this.

You read a book one page at a time.

Why don't you take life the
same way, one day at a time?

The oracle of Athens has spoken.

You know, I had an uncle who used to say
charity is learning how to forgive others.

But wisdom is knowing
how to forgive yourself.

Come on.

Hot enough for you, Crocker?

You kidding? I think
this lead is a dead end.

Hey, look, uh, what do you say, Braddock?

Been here three days still.

Everything coming in and
out of Tri-State is, uh, pure.

Well, look, our informer
says this information is correct.

So why don't we give it a
couple more days?

Crocker.

Yes, sir?
- Keep cool.

- Keep cool.

I'm trying to figure out
what I did to deserve today.

I bought my mother a card this morning.

Listen, uh,

not that much is gonna
happen around here for a while.

I have to call home. You want anything?

A couple of snow cones.
A date with a polar bear would be nice.

Take it easy.
It's just the heat wave will pass.

Uh, what do I see about
that for a guarantee?

Hello.

Oh, hi...

What time is it?

I woke you?

Yes, you did.

I'm not sorry.

Well, you shouldn't be.

It's a lovely way to wake up.

Oh, yeah.

And I'm here, and you're there.

And I need you.

Tonight, huh?

Sweetheart, listen, wait a minute.

There's been a slight change in plans.

Do you know Rumpelstiltskin?

On 11th Street, near 6th.

Listen, I'm supposed to meet some
account people there tonight around 5.

And after, they want
us to go on to a party.

Baby, tonight was
supposed to be you and me.

I know.

Listen, fuzz baby.

You're gonna love my friends.

Okay.

Hey, come on, old man.

What is this?

You remember me, Caesar Ogilvie.

Sure, Mr. Ogilvie.

But the landlord advertises
this as a secured building.

Miss Hodges, this is Don in the lobby.

There's a Mr. Ogilvie here to see you.

All right.

The lady doesn't want to be disturbed.

No, I can't bend the rules.

So and Tracy should be here by now.

They probably got hung up in traffic.

Hi, Kelly.

Can you get me a taxi?

Yes, miss.

Oh, hello.

Funny we should meet this way.

Didn't you get my message?

I don't hear birds who say no.

I see.

Alice, you want to change things.

You look at me and tell me to my
face with my money in your hand.

All right.
It was good.

Then it wasn't so good.

Then it got real, Alice.

So let's just say those beautiful
words, okay? Goodbye.

We said that three months ago.

Now we say hello.

No, I don't want you anymore, Caesar.

Don't you tell me what you want.

I know what you want.

Who is it now?

Stop it.

Who is it?

I want his name.

Go and tell me.

I'll get him.
I can get the both of you.

No, no.

You threatened Miss Hodges?

Listen, it's all right.

Um, just let him go.

He's harmless.

Tracy and Rizzo were
stacked up at the DA's office

waiting for someone
to take up that position.

I can't believe it.

Yeah, well, I believe it.

What time do you think
they're gonna get here?

Another hour at least.

Look, Bobby, I... um...

I told Molly I was gonna
take her someplace.

Go.

What's happening here?
I'll hold it.

Go.

Theo, this just came in.

There's a firebomb in a bar
on 11th Street and a bad one.

I'll get back to you.

You idiot!

Are you crazy?

You almost k*lled him!

The beat officer was Nollan.

We haven't got much to go on yet.

A car raced by and tossed it in.

We got about 17 injured, ranged from
critical right down to walking wounded.

And the dead?

The bartender.

Well, what's your guess,
professional or amateur?

Well, somebody had an enemy.

The fire department says
it was a Molotov c*ck.

Any witnesses?

As usual, we've got two men, Lieutenant.

The boss of the joint's over there.

His name is Arnold Gelb.

Wanna go inside and check the impact?
- Yes, sir.

I'm Lieutenant Kojak, can you talk?

At least I'm alive.

You saw the b*mb go in?

Man, I heard the windows go.

Something told me Arnold got down.

It was like 44 again.

First he dropped to the ground.

Then he got time to ask
'cause of the grenade.

So where were you when the b*mb went in?
- Over there.

I just came in when I
heard the windows go.

All of a sudden, people
are crying, bleeding.

My bartender ain't moving.

You got any partners, Mr. Gelb?

No, I sleep good at night.

Anybody try to move in?

If you're talking about
muscle, we get along.

Haven't fire any waiters,
bartenders, busboys like that?

No, it's the nature of the business.

They leave here, they go there.

They leave there, they come here.

No hard feelings.

You say you went inside when it went off.

An old army drunk
wanted to sing Lily Marlene all day.

I escorted him to the street.

Stavros, take Mr. Gelb
down to headquarters.

Have the artist draw a sketch of the man

he threw out of here, okay?
Before the b*mb went off?

Yes, sir, my car's down the street.

I don't think I could describe him.

Oh, sure you can, Mr. Gelb, you remember.

Army, target identification, 1944.

Don't wait for me.
I'll see you back at the office.

Lieutenant.
- Jeff, pick up a broom.

I heard the sirens.

I bet they got hurt.

Three dead. Seventeen at Bellevue.

Listen, uh,

you want me to check
for, uh, witnesses?

No, Stavros is taking care of that.

Let's go check out the hospital.

We've got five positive I.D.s.

Two males, Caucasian, John Dole and
Queens, and Frank Belknap, about 40 black.

His brother-in-law's a state assemblyman.

And five women.

Mrs. Jodie Crubb, Caucasian, 50.

Ms. Harriet Victor, early 20s.

Ms. Cain, nearly late 40s.

And two Jane Does.

Any identifiable items on the Jane Does?

One of them is elderly, black,

was carrying a velvet handbag
with a brass chain handle.

The other must have
been closest to the b*mb.

She's younger, I'd say mid-20s,

was probably attractive.

And that's all we can tell.

She did have some expensive cosmetics
in what was found of her handbag.

Also some pills, some uppers and downers.

This on one wrist.

Looks expensive.

Yeah. Can we question her?

She never regained consciousness.

Let's see where this leads.

You're early.

I didn't see the car outside.

Remember this dress?

At your sister's wedding?

Yeah, the wedding.

Molly, the car's not in the lot.

Did you leave it someplace?

You're wrong. It wasn't the wedding.

Your high school reunion.

Okay, the reunion. Now, where's the car?

I wore it the night you made the tech.

I remember.

The captain was there.

And Theo Kojak.

He said, "May all your
tomorrows be as bright as today".

Molly, the car.

I looked for it outside before I came in.

It's not in the street.
It's not in the lot.

I may need it later.

I didn't use it. I was here.

It's wherever you left it.

This is Detective Second Grade Braddock,
Manhattan South, reporting a stolen car.

Mine. Yeah.

Register to Jeff Braddock.

Last seen at the same address,
sometime after 8 a.m. today.

Thanks.

Why don't you go out?

I got dressed up instead,
thinking of Robbie.

Molly.

Maybe you could go away.

I mean, for a few days.

Get out of this heat.

You remember that summer

when we went to that lake
up near Poughkeepsie?

We caught all those fish.

I caught more fish than you or Robbie.

Oh, how he loved to fish.

Molly, please, please, please.

Don't talk about him anymore.

He was my son.

Okay, this is a likeness of the drunk

who was thrown out of the
Rumpelstiltskin before it went up.

He may be able to give us a description of
the car and the driver, so check him out.

I also want a follow-up story of everybody
who was in the lounge before it blew up.

And the laboratory
says that it was benzene.

That was the inflammatory material.

Hey, look, not very much,
but we gotta get started.

Before that sun starts beating
down on some of these knuckleheads,

and we gotta follow the leader epidemic.

And I don't have to tell you about this nut

who started this, what is it,
let's take a free ride to Cuba.

So we check the hotels and restaurants and
paint stores and stoolies and like that.

We're looking for a needle in a haystack.

Haystack?

The city of New York,
that big apple out there.

And we better find that needle before
we start reading about, ah, boom!

Look, Ma, I made the newspapers
and start another episode.

Go!

Hey, Braddock, late again.
Go see the principal, huh?

My car was stolen.

Yeah, key in the ignition, windows down.

Humorous, get going, okay? Move.

How's Molly?

Fine.

You got something on
the bracelet, right?

Maybe. I checked the
shops over on 47th.

I found a jeweler who made a
bracelet just like it for Gretchen Hodges.

Okay, I'll drive.

Wait a minute.
I can check it out and call in.

Well, you could tell me in person. Come on.

She's such a shocker.

I mean, she left here bouncing along.

That's how she was, like Quicksilver.

One minute all smiles and then
suddenly she didn't even know your name.

Any about her friends or where she works?

Ah, she was a photographer,
what they call freelance.

Beautiful kid, so naturally
there were a lot of guys around.

I don't suppose any of them left names?

You know, some of them came,
thank you, ma'am, and then left.

The others came around at
night and left who knows when.

There was this one guy,
Caesar, I don't know his last name,

but he was here yesterday,
and that was a real McGill.

He was a regular.

Then he took off for three or four months.

She wouldn't even talk
to him on the lobby phone.

He grabbed her out front,
started slapping her around,

threatened to k*ll her
and her new boyfriend.

And who's the new boyfriend?

We never saw him.

But you can get in touch with Ed Strachey.

He's night security.

I'll do that.

No problem.

What did this Caesar look like?

He was big, 6'2", 6'3",
English, heavy accent.

Age?

Oh, 30 more or less.

Have to see the young lady's
apartment now, okay?

Right this way.

I'll check it out, and
here you go in there.

Happy goodness
luck, eh? - All right.

I'll make you a couple of the best books,
telephone numbers,

dirty pictures, whatever.

Detective Crocker.

Crocker?

Yeah, take this down.

And that firebombing?

We're looking for an Englishman, about 30,

first name Caesar, 6'2", heavy accent.

He threatened to k*ll one
of the victims about half

an hour before she took
a cab to Rumpelstiltskin.

Yeah, contact Immigration,
BCI, knock on vice.

Well, if Mr. Caesar
turns on any tilt signs,

then check the night security guard.

Name of Ed Strachey.

Telephone number 227-9995.

Yeah.

No address book, nothing like that?

Too hard to go looking for this bum.

She might have had it on her.

Yeah, well, the Reds
weren't enough for this kid.

Miss Hodges was a little
snowbird, you know?

No pain with the cocaine.

A lot of guys coming up there.

Uh, do you miss Hodges has a maid?

Oh, there's a lady come
in three times a week.

She does a few of the apartments.

Why don't you check that?

Jack,

don't you want the address?

Pearl Johnson, 1610 Fowler.

Everything all right at home?

Whatever that means.

Now, you don't have
to worry about anything.

I'll be here every week.

I'll make sure everything
is neat and proper.

My son is buried near here.

I can go and visit him.

I'll tell you what, the
press hawks are circling.

One of the victims was the brother-in-law

of a state assemblyman, Theo.

Albany isn't wondering how we'll break it.

They just want to know how soon.

All right, so, Frank, what have we got?

This Gretchen Hodges,
partygoer, glitter lover,

mod friends, nothing, okay?

And nine of the 17
victims are from out west.

The assemblyman's brother-in-law is
being checked by Sapperstein and like that.

We got nothing on his season
bread that he's checking out.

So, a b*mb goes off in a gym
in New York in the afternoon.

It's like checking out the phone book.

Yeah.

Huh? Yeah, okay.

Well, wait a minute, here he is.
Lieutenant?

It's for you, it's Parker.

Hi, talk to me.

Hi, lieutenant, I spoke to Strachey, the
night security at Gretchen Hodges' building.

There's been a guy paying her a visit the
last three months or so, always at night.

Get a description?

Well, not much.

He's about my size,
dark hair, plain clothes.

That's about all I got.

Well, check again at
Gretchen Hodges' building, okay?

Maybe one of the other
tenants got a good look at him.

Okay.

What are you doing, studying
for a daydreaming contest?

Gretchen Hodges.

I think I heard that name before,
ever since Parker called me on it.

So, where?

So, I don't know where.
I only said I'd think.

So, you ought to keep thinking.

Pearl?

What are you doing here?

I worked for Gretchen a couple of nights,

served dinner, cleaned up.

I like your coffee.

Oh, you're the cop?

Yes.

What do you want here?

I know where Gretchen
was getting her stuff.

Your son.

I told him that was blood
money he was taking, but he...

That's not why I'm here, Pearl.

Gretchen is dead.

Oh.

She was in a bar.

Somebody threw a b*mb.

She was trash.

Forgive me, but she was playing
every guy in sight, including you.

But... God rest her soul, now.

Look, Pearl.

If the department finds out that I was
going around with a junkie, I'm finished.

So, we trade.

Your son for me, even up.

I wish I could promise
you he won't do it no more.

Okay.

I guess you must have
served dinner to some of her...

other men friends,
huh?

Some of them.

How about Caesar Ogilvie?

The musician?

One of these looks like a possibility.

Two deceased, one's in South America.

The other one's in on
parole, okay? Oh, yeah.

Caesar Ogilvie, convicted junkie.

Served his sentence,
discharged from parole.

Plays piano.

I call the local American
Federation of Musicians, okay?

See if fingers is giggling in town.

Okay.

Anybody hear from Braddock?
- Nope.

Okay, thanks.

A posh nightclub uptown.

This guy's gotta be pretty
good, you know?

She's dead.

Oh, you scum.

Something beautiful
and she's dead.

Don't hit me. Don't hit me.

You called her and I said, Gretchen. Gretchen.

Are you afraid of anybody?

She was, wasn't she?

I didn't do that to her, man.

I dug her. She dug me.

She dug you, huh?

The only thing that made any
sense out of this entire rotten life...

was that she belonged to me.

You don't understand.
- Shut up!

She belonged to Gretchen, nobody else.

Shut up!

She belonged to me.

Understand me.

And you found out.

You k*lled her.

No!

You slapped her around
outside her building, didn't you?

I know.

That was just my ego.

That's all.

I gave her money, she turned me off.

Come on.

I'm gonna take you in.

What the hell for?

I've got a set in five minutes.

Set, huh?

That's a deal for starters.

What?

A joint?

Officer, please.

Listen, I... I dumped the rope.

I'm clean.
I got a lot of gigs lined up.

I'm hot now.

Don't blow it for me.

He´s dead.

If you had reason to believe
that Ogilvie was a prime suspect...

why didn't you call in for a backup?

I wanted to bring him in for questioning.
He went for my g*n.

Oh, what the hell? Even the Lone Ranger
used to wait for Tonto some of the time.

I didn't think he was gonna jump me, did I?

You were gonna bring
him in for questioning?

Why, because you thought he was innocent?

Hey, Frank, however Braddock did it...
this Ogilvie had a yellow sheet on him...

with aggravated as*ault from here to Canarsie.

You know, track marks on his arm...

that would put the
Pennsylvania Rail with the shame.

And besides that, he threatened to k*ll
his Gretchen Hodges in front of witnesses.

Theo, come on.

A musician steps into an alley for a break.

An officer shoots him.

No witnesses.

Do I ask the questions... or do I
leave it up to the press?

Kojak.
- Lieutenant.

I just found that drunk they
tossed out of Rumpelstiltskin's.

Now, Ogilvie's picture
didn't mean anything to him.

Oh, another dead end.

No!

He swears it wasn't a man... it
was a woman in a red house dress.

A mess.

He said it reminded him of
his wife... and that's why it tricks.

Okay, thanks.

Well, this Ogilvy may have been a
junkie with a thousand sins,

but it was a woman who threw the b*mb.

Well, if he wasn't guilty, why
did he resist the arrest?

Possession.

Hey, for a joint?

Hey, Jeff, I don't know what
the hell went on down there

but I gotta go along with the captain.

It's gonna be a tough one
to sell to Internal Affairs.

It's gonna be even
harder to sell to the media.

Take him off the case.

Sign him into a desk job.

I'm closer to this
investigation than anybody.

I should stay on it.

You gotta understand what
the captain's trying to do.

Not only understand, but appreciate it.

Otherwise, you'll wind up
with a bow and arrow squad

somewhere in Flushing Meadows.

Hey, Theo.

sh**ting bothering him that much?

And the heat.

and a dead son and a wife who can't forget.

Hey, Jeff.

Hey, Braddock.

I got something on your car.

Braddock.

The same car almost ran over a woman
or a baby on Second Avenue about 5 p.m.

Lady phoned in the report... said
there was a woman driving in erratically.

Didn't even say she was sorry.

She said she seemed kind of freaked out.

Where on Second Avenue?

Corner 15th.

I guess everyone's going
pretty crazy around there

with that firebomb around the corner.

Oh, yeah, the moon's
coming over the mountain.

It's like the manual says, boy.

Persistence and
perseverance always pays off.

Is that what the manual says?

Yeah, that's right.

Gretchen Hodges.

I knew I heard that name before and
I found it in the files five months ago.

A holdup.

A hack got mugged and robbed.

My partner and I take the call and
Gretchen Hodges was one of the witnesses.

So?

So?

My partner was Braddock.

He took her statement
and then he drove her home.

How come he forgot he knew her?

Like the manual says.

Thank you, Stavros.

What do you think?
Braddock sat on it?

The night security guards description...

of Gretchen's gentleman friend.

It fits Braddock to a tee.

You know, tall and dark and like that.

Crocker, he took off from that stake out
of yours... before relief came, didn't he?

Yeah, there was no action.
I said okay.

What was the rush?

He was gonna pick up Molly.

Rumpelstiltskin is on
the other side of town...

and in the opposite
direction from his apartment.

So how come he comes
this way on his way home?

Look, Crocker, I want you
to pull Braddock's picture

and show it to that night security guard.

Hey, Lieutenant.

Lieutenant what?

You don't like checking on our own men?

I stood back to back with Braddock in
alleys... when freaks were firing at us.

And I'm his dead kid's guard father.

What does loyalty mean?

Sweep it under the rug?

Okay.

He just ID'd Braddock.

No whips, plots or maybes?

Well, Crocker, how positive?

He's been a starboarder the
last four or five months now.

Okay, meet me at his place.

Where's Braddock?

Traffic call. They just found this car.

Want me to ride along?

Thanks, Frank.

Oh, you're home.

Where are the car keys?

Wait, you see what I got for us?

Everything's just like it used to be.

Almost.

They're not in here.

In the drawer where you left them.

If somebody took the
car, you've got the keys.

Now where are they?

Around, I guess.

Hello, baby.

Wait till Robbie sees you.

I want the keys.

When did you find out about her?

She could have had anyone.

I only have you.

Why didn't you k*ll me?

I only have you.

I k*lled a man today.

I k*lled an innocent man.

And how many other people
are dead because of us?

Seventeen other people
who carry the scars of

what we've done to
each other all their lives.

Well, I don't want to talk about it.

We'll look after you, won't we?

We won't let you die like Robbie or Topper.

I can't hold out anymore, Molly.

I can't keep them together.

Whatever the hell is left of it.

I just can't hide it anymore.

I tried, I tried, but I can't.

We were k*lling each other.

That was our life.

And now we're k*lling other people.

It's over, Molly.

Understand, please.

It's over.

Hello, Theo.

What a nice surprise.

Look.

Oh, he's cute, Molly.

Where's Jeff?

Oh, we're going out tonight.

That's nice.

Theo.

Can things ever be the way
they used to be?

Remember?

Remember when Jeff made Detective?

And you said you hoped all our
tomorrows would be as bright as that day.

Theo.

I remember.

Want to take a ride, Molly?

What about Jeff?

Oh, he'll be along.

Why, thank you, Theo.

Oh, I guess the heat wave's over.

- Yes, I guess it is.

Yeah, I want to report a homicide.

Jeff Braddock.
