- Welcome to "Fool Us."

You never know
what kind of magic will stump

Penn and Teller,
so we look at tricks

from around the globe
in the hope that a few of them

will trip up
our magic masterminds.

And here they are now,
the two and only,

Penn and Teller!

If any magician fools
Penn and Teller,

a coveted "Fool Us" trophy
descends from the heavens

while Penn and Teller
wished they'd go to hell.

And here to tempt the fates,
let's meet our first magician.

- For years, people would see
my mental magic and say,

"Hey, you should
be on 'Fool Us.'"

And I'd think,
"You're right, I should."

As a kid,
I loved Penn and Teller.

They were the bad boys of magic.

They did danger magic
where everything went wrong.

It was kind of punk,

and I loved it
because I was a misfit kid.

I cofounded a punk band called
Weekend Crush.

[punk music]

So of course that kid wanted to
be on Penn and Teller's show.

[bell dings]

Even after he grew up
and mellowed out.

In addition to performing magic,

I started posting videos
debunking performers

who trick people by pretending
they have psychic powers.

And it totally went viral.

My social media exploded
because I was doing something

to help people,
which was awesome.

Most magicians
just try to fool people.

I try to un-fool people.

Maybe I can score myself an
un- "Fool Us" trophy tonight.

[upbeat music]

- Give it up for TikTok
trickster, Dustin Dean.

- Ladies and gentlemen,

tonight might just be
a "Fool Us" first.

Normally,
Penn uses clever code words

so that magicians
won't be mad at him

for exposing their secrets
to the audience.

But honestly,
I couldn't care less.

In fact,
I hope Penn just flat-out says

exactly how I'm doing my tricks

because psychics
use these tricks

to try to convince people
that they have real powers,

and I hate that.

So I do my best to debunk them,

but tonight,
I'm leaving the debunking

to Penn and Teller.

So let's get started
with a psychic ability

you probably heard of before,
telekinesis.

That's the ability
to move objects with your mind.

This is called a psi wheel.

It's a simple apparatus
used by psychics

to prove their abilities.

It's made of a cork, a needle,
and a little piece of paper

that balances on top
of that needle.

All of that is covered
in solid glass.

Now, I'm going to attempt
to move this paper

with my mind.

[tense music]

♪ ♪

[audience exclaims]

[applause]

♪ ♪

And that was telekinesis.

Up next, I'm gonna show you

a less common psychic ability
called pyrokinesis.

That's the ability
to control fire with your mind.

Alyson,
if you would please join me.

I want you to choose a match
to give to me

and choose a match
to take for yourself.

- Okay.

- Free choice.
- [chuckles]

All right.

- Thank you.

I want you to go ahead,
light your match,

and then try to put it out

with your mind
as quickly as possible.

- Okay.

Yeah, maybe try the hand.

Okay, it's not working.

I don't want you
hurting yourself.

What I'm going to do,
using only my mind,

extinguish the flame
as quickly as possible.

And that was pyrokinesis.

Now, finally, I would like
to demonstrate for you

the very rare, psychic power,
chronokinesis.

That is the ability
to control time itself.

Alyson, for this demonstration,
I need a single-digit number.

To make things interesting,

let's go at least
higher than three.

- Okay. Nine.

- Ooh, that's a good one.

Alyson,
I'm gonna give you my phone,

and I want you to hold it so
that everyone can see the time,

including yourself.

And right now, we can see
that the time is 8:25,

but you said nine,
so I'm going to attempt

to rewind time
exactly nine minutes.

Now,
I know what you're thinking,

and it's not
because I'm psychic.

It's because it's obvious.

It must be some sort of
clever app on my phone,

but it's not just my phone.

It's everyone's phone
in the theater tonight.

Alyson, can you take out
your phone?

And show everyone the time.

And you can see that the time
has changed for you as well.

In fact, Penn, Teller,
take out your phones.

Take a look at the time.

- Whoa.
- There you go.

- So, Penn and Teller,
did I fool you into believing

that I have psychic powers?

- No.

[laughter]

- I leave the debunking to you,
Penn and Teller.

All right.

What got you into mentalism?

Did you see your future?

- [laughs] No, no.

I started off doing magic,
learning basic card tricks

and eventually, I started doing
tricks for my friends

all throughout high school.

And then I developed something
called essential tremor.

Which essentially means that
I shake in any part of my body

any time I'm using it,
like, randomly,

so it made sleight of hand
very difficult.

So what I did instead is,

I developed, like,
sleight of mind.

- Oh, okay.
- Yeah.

- What are
some classic psychic scams?

- One very popular one is
something called cold reading,

which essentially allows
someone to look at someone

and start saying details
that are usually pretty broad.

And then they look
for reactions,

and they start making
those generic,

broad statements very specific.

And to the person
that's sitting there,

usually believes, "Wow,
this is extremely specific.

There's no way
they could've known this."

- So can you do
a cold reading on me?

- Okay, so I hear a name.

Like, I hear you
surrounded by friends,

and I think this might be...
It's not your normal name,

but it has to do with a pet.

- Oh, yeah.

- Is it, like,
a nickname though?

It doesn't sound like
a normal name.

- Hmm. Uh...

- Alley Cat
- Oh.

- What is that?
- [gasps]

My best friend
used to call me that.

- Your best friend
used to call you Alley Cat.

- Yeah.

- There's no way I should've
known that, but...

- No.
- Yeah.

- So you're a psychic.
- I'm a psychic.

- Oh, my God, I'm a believer.
- I get that a lot.

Actually,
the more I debunk psychics

on social media
and do what they do...

- Yeah.

- The more people are like,

"I think this is a front.

I think you're
actually psychic."

- Okay, and a "Fool Us" first,
this is the first time

a magician wants
their trick to be busted.

- Yes.
- So let's go to the boys.

- Well, Dustin, we couldn't
agree more on everything.

You know...
- Perfect.

- We certainly agree with
everything on busting psychics.

I just want to know,
did you mean it?

- Did I meant it?

- When you said you want me

to not speak in code
and just say it...

- Yes.

They were all
at that time anyway.

We loved the act.

and I'm still confused.

- So I decided I wanted
to drop out of school,

and my dad said
I should work with him.

I spent ten days
as a builder's assistant.

It was terrible.

I thought,
"I'm not doing this."

And after that, I swore

I'd never have a proper job,

so I've done magic
and nothing else

for my entire working life.

My career is magic.
My personal life is magic.

I'm even married to a magician.

When I married her,
she didn't do any magic.

I showed her a few tricks.

[cards shuffle]

But then she started
doing magic too.

She doesn't let me
have anything.

Some tricks are just too easy.

I mean, come on.
Like, what?

Like, finding a card.

Of course you can do that.
It's my job.

I can find cards when I'm not
even trying to find cards,

so how do I make this
more of a challenge?

I mean, that in itself
the challenge.

So tonight,
I'm facing Penn and Teller.

I've been on this show almost
as long as Penn and Teller.

I was in the very first season
in England 11 years ago.

Well, I didn't fool them then,

but now I'm older and I'm wiser.

Although I guess,
they are too, right?

Fingers crossed.

[cheers and applause]

- Speaking the Queen's English,
here's UK conjurer,

Alan Hudson.

- Thank you very much.

So I'm a comedy magician,
and people ask me all the time

how I manage to combine
comedy and magic,

so I'll tell you,
it's because of my parents.

See, my mum used
to tell all these funny jokes,

and my dad disappeared
when I was nine.

[laughter]

But tonight, I'm gonna try
and find a playing card,

not once, but twice.

First time
using sleight of hand,

I'll be honest.

Second time, real magic.

[laughter]

but I'm not gonna do that.

And to... I did say I was
gonna find the card again,

but this time with real magic.

And to prove it's real magic,

you're gonna wrap me up
from head to toe

in cellophane.

- How exciting.

- Yeah, I was on in the UK
in the very first season.

what a CD is.

- A CD... exactly.

- So does it feel different
to be back this time?

- Certainly warmer this time.

you're not gonna be able

Does Indian culture
play a big part in your magic?

- Yes, it does.

One of the concepts
which I work on

is amalgamating magic,
illusion, theatrical

with the grand Indian weddings,

wherein the bride and the groom,

they actually perform magic
for each other with a story,

dance, music, magic, illusion,
everything together.

- [sighs]

So can you tell me about
the history of magic in India?

- If you go back to a long time,

we had the Indian rope trick,
which was one of the most

famous magic tricks
in the history of magic.

This was performed
on the streets

where the Indian madaris,

that's what they called
the street magicians,

they would actually
play the bin,

which is a musical instrument,

and the rope would
start standing up like...

- Oh, I know that trick.
- Like a snake... yes.

And then the boy climbs us,
and then he falls down,

and all his parts are collected,

and he comes back alive.

- That's amazing.

Okay, Dr. Kruti,

let's go a little bit
further into the future

and see if you fooled the boys.

- Yes.

- Doctor, thank you so much

and saw some
wonderful magic over there.

And it's great that you brought
some wonderful magic here

It was just really,

this is an original premise.

We've never seen
the time travel being used

that we believed it completely.

- A great magician said that
when you walk into a room,

people need to know
that you're worth noticing.

I'm a huge nerd,

so bright red glasses
are my trademark.

It's a way to stand out
and to still be me.

A magic nerd is someone like me

who literally obsesses
over magic

at work, in the shower, 24/7.

I think that's why I'm a very
productive magic creator.

I literally never stop thinking.

My dad stutters,

and my mom
is a speech therapist.

I stutter too,

and now I support
my magic and my family

by being a licensed
speech language therapist.

Magic can often be therapeutic
for my stuttering.

I'm confident on stage.
I'm comfortable.

Being able to perform like that

is just one of the gifts
that magic's given me.

Still, when you stutter,
any public speaking is a risk,

but here I go competing
on national television

in front of two
of the greatest magicians

you'll ever see.

The reason I can do that

is because magic transformed me

into me.

But that means that
I can't read your mind tonight,

I'm gonna use these
to read your gaze.

It is the latest
and greatest development

in alien clairvoyant technology,

and they're fantastic,
but I'd love for you

to come up and look at them
a little bit closer.

I got these at a gift shop
at a truck stop near Area 51,

and these are fantastic.

The lady at the gift shop said
they're actually alien plastic

salvaged from a UFO.

She also told me
that these things

are weirdly effective

at making even a schmuck like me

look like a genuine mind reader.

- My goodness.
- Right?

So in order for this to happen,
you have the card... yes.

- So how do you approach
a new trick?

- Often for me,
it's not method first,

it's not effect first,
but it's an image first.

I get an idea
of what I want to have,

and then I kind of develop

the effect and the method
at the same time.
