Come on.

You know
who that man is?

No.

I don't know
who you are either.

My name is
Captain Albert Reeves,

Adjutant General's Office,
United States Army.

The man you just put in jail
is Judge Barnaby Cade.

Barnaby Cade?

Are you sure?

I've been trailing him
ever since he was released

from the penitentiary
in Rawlins a week ago.

Yeah.
I heard he cut out.

He served time for stealing
government money.

We're interested

I've seen you around town

How come you didn't

I didn't think
it was a good idea to be seen

You picked up any leads?

He's been trying to

any money.

I know a young fellow
named Slim Sherman

interested in this.

Why?

Barnaby Cade was a member
of the Chawcktaw-Johnson g*ng,

a while back they k*lled
a friend of Slim's.

The last thing
we want is a lynching.

No, no.

Dallas.

Been waiting long?

Oh, about 2 years.

How'd you know
I was out?

Well, I heard
he broke jail.

I figured he must have known
you got paroled.

You boys spend all that time
scouting the place out?

We might have looked around
little here and there.

I don't reckon if you found it
or you wouldn't be here.

Who is he?

What's he doing here?

He's a friend of mine,
knows the territory.

I didn't know how many of us
would show up.

Okay.

Don't you really mean
that you and Rickert

figured you'd use him
to find this place,

and then you just
cut me and Dallas out?

Not exactly.

I figured on
cutting Rickert out, too.

Yeah.

Well, you can just
send him packing.

No, no, family ain't complete
without Chawcktaw.

Well, Chawcktaw was k*lled
in a line house in Casper.

You see him get it?

Well, no but I know
a fellow did,

that's gonna make
a difference in the split.

How different?

Well, Chawcktaw got 30%
and you got 25%

and we got

four ways,

that's gonna leave us
with 22.5% and you with 32.5%.

till we get on the trail.

Here we are...

point B.

Well.

Now your turn, Marcy.

Ready to be the C-man.

Come on, it's late,
let's camp here.

We can get up and get
a fresh start in the morning.

About a half hour
of daylight left,

why don't some of you
boys fan out

and see if you can scare up
some meat?

Might spice up the oatmeal
and jerky a mite.

How are we gonna be sure that
you ain't gonna hightail it off

soon as we turn
our backs?

I'd be easy enough
to track.

That's right.

Hey, listen, Cade, you know
the last time we was here

I saw a whole bunch of
wild turkey out there.

Now why don't you
just give me

the lend of that old bird g*n
of yours

and I'll go out and get us
a little Christmas dinner.

You'll never live
that long.

What do you aim to get
with that p*stol, son?

Anything I aim at,
Pop.

Now you'll just
blow it to pieces,

why don't you stay here
and help me?

You know,
I was just thinking,

we crossed a lot of streams
getting here and back,

now maybe it was
the same stream.

You aiming to
pull out tonight,

follow that stream
and get there first?

There's a lot of streams
around here,

they all meander
so much

you never know
which one you're on.

Go on, hunt your supper,
or you get greedier

than you are hungry.

What are you
doing here?

See which way
they went?

I'm not needed here
anymore.

I don't want to run across them
in open country.

Think you'd be
any better off here?

One way to make sure.

Did you see that little pouch
the judge was carrying?

Yeah, what about it?

Well, I was just thinking,
now he's got this whole thing

figured out a lot better
than he's lettin' on.

Did you see the way he was
looking in that little pouch?

You think maybe the answer
to this whole thing's

in that little pouch?

I don't know,
but I'm gonna make it

my business to find out.

You don't have to
dig it so deep.

Yeah, a little practice
won't hurt.

After a while we'll be
digging us up some money.

Does anybody know
where?

You'd better.

I told you,
it's one of several places.

Have you headed
towards any of 'em?

I've headed toward
all of 'em.

How did the money
get there?

Several years ago,
we had a few business deals

and after each friend
sanctioned,

we all met that place
where we branched off

the main trail.

There, we got
rid of our g*ns.

Then every fellow
blindfolded his self,

wrapped up his head,
except Rickert.

Now he led us
from point A to point B,

then he covered up
his eyes

and Marcy took us
down to point C,

blindfolded his self.

Dallas took us on up
point D.

I picked the trail
to the E,

and Chawcktaw took us
to the hiding place.

And did the same thing
on the way back.

In reverse, that way
nobody knew nothing about

anything except his
own leg of the route.

Coming and going.

And now I'm supposed to
lead you over the missing links.

And I was hoping you could
take me all the way.

I didn't know whether
the others would show up.

Wouldn't it have been better
just to split up the money

and hide it individually?

You just ain't got
a organization mind, son.

We was like pieces of a map
but nobody could afford to

let nothing happen
to nobody else.

That's the finest kind of
royalty there is,

the kind you buy, sort of
a mutual insurance policy.

It looks like it didn't work,
two of you served time.

Yeah, two of 'em got shot
trying to save us.

Bravest thing
I ever saw.

You think they'd have done that
if we'd have just been friends?

Suppose I know
where the place is,

what's to stop me from
sneaking out of here tonight

and beating you to it?

Beautiful thinking, son.

You know ever since
today at noon

when you didn't k*ll
Rickert,

I've been suspicious of a mean
little streak of decency in you.

What's to stop me?

What good does it
do you?

Not just sitting
there out there

under a tree,
you know?

Do all the others know
where it's hidden?

Once they get
to the sight?

Sure.

You ain't figuring on trying
to make a better deal

with one of the others now,
are you?

I make deals
one at a time.

You wouldn't
double-cross me?

No.

Too bad...

just when I was getting to
trust you.

[ g*nsh*t ]

Sounds like one of the boys
got his supper...

or Rickert.

Well, looky
what Dallas got.

Were you going to
have us a feast in?

You mean,
you k*lled a calf

and only took
the hind quarter?

Well, no, I took the liver
and the heart and the tongue,

besides it was
just a maverick.

There's a brand on it.

Well, them mavericks
is getting close to

branding irons
every day.

Where's Rickert?

You was doing quite a lot of

Well, I only shot once,
when I k*lled that calf.

Where was he?

Right here with me,

except when he was out
getting firewood

for quite a while.

Where were you, Marcy?

Where was I?

Where was he?

Nobody knows
if I stayed in camp.

Looks like we all had
a crack at him.

Yeah, but who got him?

Well, who cares?

Yeah, knew he would used up,
probably won't come in to camp

thinking one of us
would get him.

He's probably out there
in the brush somewheres.

He'll show up claiming
his share when dig it up.

Then he'll follow us
on foot.

There's his horse.

Blood on the saddle,

looks like Rickert
hurt his self.

Well, how do you
like your steaks?

Well, with Rickert gone,

that leaves
another 20% to split.

Now what do you say to...

I got to
take care of him.

Let's make it 55%,

Where you going,
Marcy?

I finished my part
of this route,

and nobody around here
got any use for me.

And I ain't sleeping
in this camp tonight.

Oh, you're a big boy now.

You can sleep
where you want to.

Marcy, you and me has been
partners for a long time.

Oh, we ain't been
partners of nothing.

You've just been waiting this

Well, now I wouldn't let
anything happen to you.

Ah, maybe not,

but I ain't gonna let
none of you get back at me.

In fact I'm gonna behind you
all the time, just tracking.

Oh, I'll ride in
when we get to the place.

And that way
it'll be all even.

Meantime, don't any of you
try to follow me

or you're gonna catch something
you ain't chasing.

Dead.

Every person
would know that,

if it wasn't for the throat
being cut.

How'd you happen
to find him, son.

I was on my way to
the creek to wash up.

Almost had know
where to look, didn't you?

Dallas is the only man
in camp

Marcy'd trust
close enough to do that.

Well, I trailed with him.

I wouldn't want to
k*ll him.

Let's see your knife.

There's blood on it,
all right.

Well, sure
there's blood on it.

I slaughtered that calf.

Look at your own knifes.

You all cut up steak
off that haunch.

Let's eat breakfast.

We ought to give Marcy
a funeral.

Go ahead whilst I cook.

What have you
got in mind, Dall?

Now what are you
pulling down on me for?

I ain't done my part
of the road yet.

We might not need
that part.

You threw down
on the wrong man.

He's the one
we both need.

Now you take that shot g*n
off me, I'll k*ll him.

And I'll blow
your head off.

Why haven't you done it
already?

If I shot you in the ear,
your finger might tighten

on that trigger
and you'd k*ll him.

Now look,
Marcy is gone now,

and we could
split that 22.50%.

I take 12.50%
and you 10%.

I want to be cut in.

Well, you're sitting
on the wrong log

to be making demands.

How much of a cut?

You're a thief.

That's possible.

Sure does beat all.

Every time I get me
a good employee,

he goes in business
for himself.

We need Dallas?

Well, it'll save a lot of time,
that's about all.

Deal.

Well, one thing, before we go
on my leg of the trip,

we got to
dump these weapons.

How do we do it?

Well, you lay that g*n down,
and I'll lay mine down.

Let's do it
the other way around.

No.

I'll take the g*ns.

I got you covered.

Now you sh**t at me,
and the judge will

cut your head off
with that scatter g*n

and I'll have a 50-50 chance
at throwing down on you

before you can
bring it on me.

Now to prove
what I'm saying,

I'm gonna count three
and draw my g*n.

One...

two...

three.

Now throw your weapons
on the ground knives and all.

Now you all dust
each other off

and make sure
there's no holdouts.

I'm gonna lose these
in the brush.

What's that?

That's just a pocket knife now,
you want to see it?

Nah.

That boy is quite
a poker player.

Figured we had
a half a chance to make it,

and you didn't have
none.

You threw
yours away too?

I didn't want to stay awake
watching one of you

don't steal it.

[ creature rattling ]

Well, hello there,
little fellow.

You like to get stepped on
down there.

My.

Prettier than a calico kitten.

Don't you bite me.

You'd turn greener
than a wet rock.

Come in there.

There.

Don't you stick your
tongue out at me. eh.

I ain't gonna hurt ya.

Make you dizzy, sonny?

Hey, judge,

what do you think
of this idea?

Why didn't you
look in his hat?

Same reason
you didn't.

Now you just stay
right where you are

and you, you get over here
by this tree

with your back to it.

Come on now.

Come on, come on.

I got to tie you folks up
for the night.

This is wet raw hide.

When the sun comes up
in the morning,

it's gonna
start to shrink.

Anything happens to me
during the night,

you're gonna be the first men
ever got hung sitting down.

Which tree is mine?

I've been taken, Dall,

you know I don't want to be
greedy rather gone

or maybe 50-50 split
would be better?

You know, I've been thinking
about the same thing myself.

I tell you what,

we'll talk about it
tomorrow,

after you done
your part of the leg.

Meanwhile...

how about you give me
this pouch.

Where do you suppose
he went?

He's probably sleeping out
in the brush somewhere.

Judge.

Huh?

Did you k*ll
Rickert and Marcy?

No.

You?

No.

Then it must
have been Dallas.

So we got nothing to
worry about.

You're pretty smug for an
unarmed man tied to a tree.

There's other weapons
than g*ns.

Like what?

You just wait and see.

[ screaming ]

What was that?

Sounded just like a man
getting bit by a rattlesnake.

Little fellow.

Anything wrong, Dallas?

Do you know anything
about a snake bite?

I've been bit
a couple times.

Snake bit you?

You know
a snake bit me.

Come on.

Where did he get ya?

Right here on the wrist.

Does that hurt bad?

Well, bad like
two wasps' stings.

Did you see him?

Yeah, it was little rattler
about that long.

I'm sorry,
I can't help you.

What are you
talking about?

Now I've seen snake bites
mended before.

All you got to do is cut them
little punctures,

get that poison out.

Not this kind of bite.

He got you in a vein
and even if I cut your arm off,

it wouldn't help.

Oh, you ain't go
cutting nobody's arm off.

Now you do
like I tell you.

I'm telling you,
it won't do any good!

Do like I say.

Dallas, you'll be dead
in 7 minutes.

And so will you.

But...

what about me?

Well, judge, I figure
you'll last till sometime

tomorrow afternoon.

Now you go ahead, cut!

You all right?

Yeah.

Son, you, you sure
[unintelligible],

Dallas passed on?

Yeah, kind of.

Ah, looks like
we're back to our original

friendly little
partnership, don't it.

Cut me loose.

I like you the way
you are.

You ain't gonna
leave me here to die.

Yeah, I'm gonna
leave you here.

What you do is
up to you.

Don't forget
I know the way out.

Well, you don't know
where to dig.

No, but I know the way
you think, that'll be enough.

I'll give you
an extra 10%.

You were gonna split
even with Dallas.

Well, I was lying to him.

See that'd give you 65%
and me 35%,

I had in mind
the other way around,

and you'd still be getting

you originally
planned on.

You got a deal, you thief,
now cut me loose.

I'm not gonna
take my eyes off you

until I get ready
to put a shovel in your hand.

Now we're gonna saddle up
tonight and ride out.

JESS: Well, this is it.

This ain't it.

Might as well
give the whole thing up

as a bad job.

There was no waterfall
around anywhere we were.

This is it.

The last time you were here
it was summer,

so naturally
the falls had dried up.

This is the only water
for miles.

You told Dallas there was
creeks all around here.

Yeah, and when I told him that
it was true.

That was 100 miles back.

There's not so many creeks
this far south.

So start digging.

Where?

That's your department.

Let's just talk a little more
about the split.

Let's you
start digging.

I want 75%.

Judge, I can't hear a word
you're saying.

I hold all,
the whole cards now.

And I could string you up
by your thumbs,

but I wouldn't like to
do that.

Why not?

Because by the time
you talked,

your hands would be
too sore to dig.

You gonna let an old man dig
this whole hole all by his self?

Judge, you ever
hold up a stage over

near Ortega wells?

Yeah.

All in the record.

They caught me,
I confessed to everything.

One of my worst jobs,
for the little money in it,

Chawcktaw hauled off
and shot the driver.

Should've known,
nobody riding the shotgun,

no money.

Are you gonna dig?

Yeah, after a while.

I'm thirsty.

Paydirt!

Here she is.

CHAWCKTAW: Hold it.

[ c*ck g*n ]

Where is the derringer?

Saddleback.

Are you Chawcktaw?

Nevermind.

Keep your hands high,
let's join the judge.

Oh, Chaw-- Chawcktaw?

Well, they said
you got shot.

I did.

Well, it's sure
good to see ya.

Kind of like Christmas
and a birthday

all wrapped into one.

Now you can
sh**t this fellow

and get on
with our business, eh.

Bank-robbing business ain't
what it used to be.

Well, how come
you didn't join us before?

I started to
but too many showed up.

I figured
this was the last trip.

Was easier for me
to stay outside of camp

and get rid of the boys
one at a time.

You got Rickert
and Marcy, eh?

Thanks for taking
care of Dallas.

Stay in the hole,
judge!

Save me some trouble.

Well, you aren't going to
sh**t me, are you, Chawcky?

You'll have company,
get in the hole you.

Fall this way, Chawcky.

Sorry, judge,
the other barrel's not loaded.

Now let's go back
to the Laramie.

Laramie?

Wait...

Who are you, son?

Jess Harper, a friend
of the sheriff's.

Whoa, man, oh, man,
can I pick 'em.

Lots of ways you were
worse than the others.

You was the only one
pretending to be

something you wasn't.

How much is
your finder's fee?

Enough.

We still partners?

No, we're not.

Well, can't you give me
just a little

and then you could make off
with the whole bunch.

Not interested, Pop.

Let's go.

I just can't understand
what you've got against me.

I seen you chap
footing around town.

Didn't mind that.

This here honest fellow
took me in.

Why'd you bring me
back here?

'Cause that stage driver
you k*lled

was a friend of Slim's,
and Slim's a friend of mine.

Should've known.

Anybody's got no more
regard for money

than you have is
bound to have a friend.

And my friend's dead.

Chawcktaw done that.

He's gone to his reward.

What are you
holding me for?

You k*lled Dallas.

Snake bit him.

All right, you k*lled
Chawcktaw.

Self defense,
saving your life.

You're a bank robber.

Served full time
for that.

The army got its money back,
that's all I'm interested in.

All right, judge, you finish
your crackling chicken

then you mount up and you
ride out of this territory

or I'll figure a charge
that'll stick.

I owe this fellow $37
for outfitting me.

You're worth more than that
just to get rid of you.

All right, I'll go,

soon as you
sign the affidavit.

What affidavit?

The one identifying
the boys.

Reward out
on all of them.

Shouldn't have to come out
of this thing empty-handed.

Served 2 years...

or at least why
get the bounty.

Your old sidewinder
is within his rights.

It's up to you, Jess.

Oh, somebody
write it up, I'll sign it.

Now you're talking.

Always figured
there must be

some good in you
law abiding folks.

Never figured
I'd live to see it.

Is there any more of them
squash taters?
