It's how us old fogies
used to listen to music.

Old-timey music was called "ana-frog"?

-I guess frogs are musical.
-[Beck laughs]

a type of old tech called "analog."

Music gets on them in a really cool way.

Sound waves are etched
onto magnetic particles on the tape.

[Ada] Fascinating!

So, when we stream music,
are sound waves etched onto our computers?

Oh, no, not quite.

MP3s that you stream
are digital, not analog.

The music gets stored
in a file through numbers.

[Benny] Like computer data.

-[Ada] So cool!

when I DJ at his party tonight.

It's like a playlist of songs,

but on a cassette.

It's not supposed to sound like that.

I broke my mom's mixtape.

to fix this with science.

What if we got chipmunk DJs to play a set,

so your mom's tape
won't stand out from the other music?

That would be chipmunk-tastic.

Surround-sound-chipmunk sounds bananas,
and not in a good way.

-Definitely too much.
-[gasps]

We could program Calypso,

then shrink him, and put him
in the cassette to investigate.

But what if Calypso
messes up the tape even more?

[sighs] Right. Didn't think of that.

I loved cassettes back in the day,

but they are so finicky.

-[relieved sighs]

They'd work most of the time,

but then they'd skip and jump
and do all kind of shenanigans.

we'd use a good old-fashioned pencil…

without messing it up more.

That was insane in the mainframe.

It's like my watch was attracted
to the tape like a magnet.

[gasps] Magnet? I think I just
connected the polka dots.

Benny's dad said sound waves
are etched onto a magnetic tape.

So maybe that has something to do
with why the tape sounds funny.

You might be onto something.
Let's do more research.

When you play a cassette,
the magnetized particles on the tape

make an electric current
that moves from tape to player.

Then we hear music from the speakers.

-Party!
-[Benny laughs]

[laughs, gasps] I have an observation.

When the cassette's playing,

magnetic charges build up
in the tape deck.

So, maybe the music sounds funny
because of the cassette player,

-not the cassette.
-Does it say what we should do?

Uh-huh. A demagnetizer will
reduce the magnetic charge,

and make it play normal again.

I can design one.

-[Ada] Cool!
-Awesome!

-The demagnetizer design's done.
-[Ada] Great job!

First, we need supplies.

my tablet, and a cable to connect them.
