This is my idea
of a field trip.

totally unrealistic.

You don't catch an insect
by blindfolding it,

And besides,
there's no such thing

As a 50-foot praying mantis,

And even if there were,
you could trap it

Instead of trying
to destroy it.

They're not my favorite
thing in the world, ok?

And what I really hate
are...spiders!

aren't insects, you know.

They have 8 legs,

we were gonna find

A professional trapper,
not a trap.

Where is ms. Frizzle,
anyway?

where I come from,

The best way
to tap into a trapper

Is to get wrapped
in her trap.

Phoebe: if that fly
isn't careful,

It's gonna get wrapped
in the trap, too.

Whoa! That fly

That's because the web
is nearly invisible.

dinner was ready.

Stay out of sight

Till your meal
is stuck tight.

You mean spiders are

I'll cut some of
these anchor lines.

That spider
came out of nowhere.

Pretty amazing,
if you ask me.

It has a built-in
fly alarm.

And some web lines
that aren't sticky

So the spider
doesn't get zapped

By its own trap.

Ms. Frizzle: as my old
trapper friend

I'm inside some sort

kind of trap-door

Which could be why
the critter who made it

Is called
a trap-door spider.

The trap-door spider
hides inside here

Until something juicy
comes along.

Then she opens the door,
and...gotcha!

to my research,

than 3 feet away

From a spider.

All: aah!

We keep running into spiders!
They're everywhere!

But don't you see,
arnold?

Spiders
are trappers.

in the business.

Beetle at 6 o'clock!

The spider

[Kids gasp]

This sure is a nice
safe place to hide.

[Rumbling]

wanda.

The trapper that knows
when to run and hide

Lives to trap
another day.

All clear.

General aranius:
uh, ashley bait shop?

What does a 50-foot
praying mantis eat?

Uh-huh. Uh-huh.
"Anything she wants."

Everyone's a comedian.

Kids: liz!

Phoebe: we've got to get back
in the movie.

Let's go! We've got
a bus to catch!

Carlos: and
a lizard to save!

Now, this is what I call
an all-encompassing experience.

Never order mushrooms
and anchovies on the same pizza.

What we learned is,
for prey on the ground,

Use a trap
on the ground.

Except our prey
wasn't on the ground.

Is it just me, or is that
the general up there?

Phoebe: and liz!

For prey in the air,
use a trap in the air.

All: a spider web!

Prepare operation

Ms. Frizzle:
let the spinnerets fly.

Dorothy ann: at my old school,
the bus never made a web.

Ralphie: I think
I'm gonna be sick.

There's no time
to be sick.

We've got
to be ready

For the general.

Begin the radial spokes.

Wanda: whoa!

Tim: hang on!

Ralphie: spin that web!

[Screeching]

General aranius:

Get your lizard here!
Red-hot lizard!

Hurry up, ms. Frizzle!
He's comin' this way!

Ms. Frizzle:
switching spinnerets.

Get ready
for the sticky stuff.

[Kids laughing]

Web almost complete.

Phoebe: and just in time!

Ralphie: here comes
the general!

Ms. Frizzle:
hit the signal line!

Lizard here!
Get it now!

What the...
Is that a spider web?

Whoa!

Kids: gotcha!

Bet you'd hate to be
in my shoes, huh, kids?

Me, too.

Wanda: oh, no! The general's
getting away again!

Forget the general.
Our only chance

To save liz now
is to stop the mantis.

But the mantis is too big
for a trap-door.

And we can't wait for it
to fly into our web.

in the kitchen with dino ♪

That's it! Take the trap
to the mantis!

Prepare for operation
trapper extraordinaire!

I think she's got it.

General aranius: I'm gonna
get that creature--

Ow! Ooch! Aah! Ooh!

your free lizard!

[Screeching]

The lizard's all yours,
big boy.

This isn't gonna
be pretty.

Phoebe: now!

Tim: we got it!

Wanda: more silk!

this mantis trapped.

Keesha: you guys get liz.
We'll take care of the general.

Careful, liz.

About spiders--
all spiders,

But you just showed 3.

We, uh...

We focused on
the orb, trap-door,

And dinopus spiders

Because the kinds
of traps they make

Were important
to the story.

Understood, but there
are more than 100,000

Different kinds
of spiders

And hundreds of ways
they hunt and trap.

In fact, although
most spiders make silk,

Only some of them
spin webs.

We know that,

And we showed as much
as we could

While still giving you

As much screen time
as possible.

That spiders are skilled
at trapping insects.

Spiders prey
