01x11 - Rupert and the Twilight Fan

Post by bunniefuu »

So is that everything, Dad?

That’s everything, Rupert.

Are you sure that’s

everything?

Melons.

Pardon?

I forgot the melons.

I’ll only be a second, Rupert.

Not again.

Boo!

Oops!

(Laughing)

Sorry, Rupert, did I scare you?

Maybe just a little.

(Laughing)

Why hello, Tiger Lily.

This is a nice surprise.

That’s putting it mildly.

Rupert, I was hoping you

could come to my house for

lunch.

Dad?

Oranges!

Pardon!

I forgot the oranges.

I’ll only be a second.

I’ll be there as soon as I

can, Tiger Lily.

Goodbye!

(Birds singing)

Shopping with Dad always

takes twice as long as it’s

supposed to.

His "I’ll only be a seconds" can

really add up.

Oh!

I’m terribly sorry.

I was in a rush to get to the

Conjuror’s house and I didn't

see you.

Oh, the Conjuror, you know

him?

Yes, I’m a friend of his

daughter, Tiger Lily.

Ah, this is indeed a

coincidence.

Many years ago, the Conjuror and

I were great friends.

But then we had a terrible

disagreement.

Now I have come with a peace

offering, a gift for the

conjuror’s daughter, your

friend, Tiger Lily.

You see, the arrival of a gift

is the first step in healing an

old wound.

It is an old Chinese custom.

Perhaps you could take it for

me.

Well, I suppose I could but--

And then by the time I

arrive, I am sure the Conjuror

will be ready to be my friend

once again.

I’ll be glad to.

Oh, I almost forgot.

What’s your name so I can tell

the Conjuror you’re coming?

I prefer it to be a surprise.

He will know when the gift is

open.

Be sure to give it to his

daughter.

Tiger Lily loves surprises.

Bye!

So do I, my little friend!

So do I!

(Laughing)

TIGER LILYA gift?

For me?

Oh, it’s beautiful.

Look father, Rupert brought me a

gift.

Tiger Lily, no, don’t!

Oh...

Tiger Lily!

What’s wrong?

What’s happened to Tiger Lily?

It’s the Twilight Fan!

Rupert, where did you get this?

From an elderly man I met on

the way.

He said he was an old friend of

yours.

Tung Lai, that was not an old

friend you met.

Tung Lai is my deadly enemy.

But--

But he seemed such a kindly old

man.

Things are not always what

they seem.

He is an evil sorcerer who was

banished by the emperor.

When I replaced him as court

magician, he swore he’d never

forgive me.

The twilight fan is his revenge.

(Gasping)

Oh, no, what’s it done to

Tiger Lily?

One wave from the fan puts

its victim into a deep sleep, a

twilight from which they will

never awaken.

Never?

But there must be a way to break

the spell.

There must be.

We can only hope.

There is a way!

The sleeping spell of the

Twilight Fan can only be broken

by fanning the victim with the

tail feather from the Dove of

Dawn.

Dove of Dawn?

Yes, it is said that only

such bird exits.

It dwells in the Kingdom of

Birds.

Then we must go there right

away!

No, Rupert, I must stay here

with Tiger Lily.

Then I’ll go.

The Professor can take me in one

of his flying machines.

Give him this map.

It shows the way to the Bird

Kingdom.

Go, Rupert, with all speed!

Bodkin, I must talk to the

Professor right away!

The Professor?

Oh, yes.

I mean, no.

I’m sorry, Rupert, he's not

here.

Won’t be back for days.

But surely I can help.

After all, I am the Professor’s

helper.

Can you fly this?

Well, yes.

I mean, no.

But you said--

It’s totally out of the

question.

This is the Professor’s newest

invention.

He told me to be very careful

with it.

I wouldn’t want anything--

But Tiger Lily has been put

under a sleeping spell.

If you don’t help me, she'll

sleep forever.

Now, let’s see.

Forward propeller backwards.

Starboard propeller forwards.

Port lever sideways.

Whoa!

No, no, I mean, starboard

propeller backwards!

That’s better!

Now I’ve got it!

Uh, starboard forward--

Backwards!

Come on, go up!

Phew!

I hope we’re going to be there

soon.

(Gasping)

(Screaming)

No!

Starboard propeller, forward!

Rear propeller, sideways!

Or is it forward propeller

sideways?

Bodkin, do something!

Stop!

RUPERTWhoa!

Oh, you did it.

As if there was ever any

doubt.

(Engine backfiring)

(Screaming)

Perfect landing!

Well, almost!

(Laughing)

It looks like we’ve got a

welcoming committee.

They must be impressed with

the Professor’s new flying

machine.

Birds know good flying when they

see it.

The King--

Oof!

Humph!

Humph!

This is an emergency!

Please, we must speak to the--

The King of Birds demands

that you be brought to him at

once.

It won’t be long now.

I’ll get a feather from the Dove

of Dawn, and Tiger Lily will be

saved.

(Humming)

(Giggling)

Your Maj--

Oof!

I’ve seen a lot of birdhouses

in my day, but this one takes

the biscuit.

Your Majesty.

Oh, right, Your Majesty.

RUPERTWe have come on a

matter of the utmost importance.

There is a young girl in

Nutwood who--

A flying machine?

You’ve come to the Bird Kingdom

in a flying machine?

Remarkable, isn’t it?

It flies backwards, sideways.

Did you see how I stopped in

front of that tower?

If you like, I’ll take you up

for a flight--

That flying machine, any

flying machine, is an insult, an

affront to birds everywhere.

Well, I’ll admit it does need

a little work.

Only birds are meant to fly!

But, Your Majesty, we didn’t

mean to--

Guards, cage them

immediately and see to it that

their flying machine is

destroyed!

No, you can’t!

The Professor will have a fit!

RUPERTIf I don’t help Tiger

Lily, she’ll sleep forever!

(Birds squawking)

(Humming)

(Giggling)

(Crash)

This is terrible.

We have to get out of here.

You said it!

If they so much as scratch the

Professor’s flying machine,

I’ll--

Not that.

I mean to save Tiger Lily.

If we could only get these bars

apart.

(Groaning)

The bars are no problem.

As the Professor always says,

what I lack in stature, I make

up for in strength!

Amazing!

It’s the height that's the

problem.

Now what are we supposed to do?

Fly away?

Our only chance is to swing

the cage over to that open

window.

One, two--

Whoa!

(Screaming)

(Clucking)

(Squawking)

(Rupert & Bodkin sneezing)

Let’s go.

If we don’t rescue the flying

machine, we’ll be trapped here

forever.

I’m not leaving until I have

a tail feather from the Dove of

Dawn.

But we’ll never find it.

We don’t even know where to

start looking.

Then I must talk to the Bird

King.

The Bird King?

Listen, you don’t have to be a

wise, old owl to know that old

buzzard doesn’t give a hoot.

We have to try.

(Humming)

Oh!

(Chirping)

What a ridiculous notion.

Imagine the nerve of those

windless creatures thinking they

could fly.

Where do they get such ideas?

They were meant to walk on the

ground.

Only birds are meant to soar on

high through the clouds,

lighter than the wind itself.

Destroy it immediately.

(Squawking)

Impossible, how could they have

escaped?

(Chirping)

No, they did not just fly away!

Oh, carry on.

I want this flying machine

reduced to nuts and bolts.

Ooh.

Ah, hm.

Ta-da!

I tell you, Rupert, there’s

no way you’ll get him to listen.

We’re just going to wind up back

where we started.

We have to take that chance.

I’m sure I can convince him.

Your Majesty, it seems that

the prisoners have--

Yes?

Escaped.

You...

Bird brains, find them!

And this time throw them in the

tower!

I say we go back and get the

flying machine now.

I have to make the King

listen.

It’s my fault, Bodkin.

It’s my fault that Tiger Lily

can’t wake up.

If I could only get him alone.

Bodkin?

Bodkin?

Hey, you chicken hawks,

you’ll never catch me with those

feather dusters you call wings.

(Laughing)

(Blowing raspberry)

What are you waiting for?

Get him!

You heard the King.

What are you waiting for?

Get him!

Well, what you waiting for?

Get him, sire?

Get him!

Yes, sire, right away, sire.

Good old Bodkin.

(Screeching)

Guess I ducked that one.

I knew you cuckoos could never

catch me.

Whoa, this is for the birds.

Your Majesty!

(Cawing)

How, how dare you?

Your Majesty, I must speak

with you.

Guards, guards!

Your Majesty, please listen

to me.

Take him away.

Yes, Your Majesty,

immediately.

You don’t understand.

If you don’t help me, she'll

sleep forever.

Put me down, you overgrown

hummingbird!

Ah!

(Laughing)

You’re going to wreck the

Professor’s flying machine!

Wee!

(Clucking)

(Screaming)

Whoa!

This is an outrage!

(Screaming)

You don’t know your altimeter

from your gyroscope.

Huh?

Then again, neither do I.

(Screaming)

(Humming)

Hm?

(Humming)

I command you to bring that

flying machine down here

immediately!

I think that’s what they're

doing, sire!

(Clucking)

(Cawing)

Your Majesty!

Phew!

(Screaming)

(Crash)

I did it, as if there was

ever any doubt.

Hip-hip, hooray!

Hip-hip, hooray!

You’ve assaulted the King!

Guards, guards!

You, you, you saved my life.

What’s that got to do with--

Well, well, of course he did.

And what brave little wingless

bird he is.

KINGHow can I thank you?

I came here to save my

friend, Tiger Lily.

I need a tail feather from the

Dove of Dawn to awaken her from

an evil sleeping spell.

The Dove of Dawn?

I think you had better come with

me.

The Dove of Dawn is a most

honoured member of the Bird

Kingdom.

She ushers in the dawn each day.

It’s beautiful.

There are no others like her

in the entire world.

You have no idea what this

means to me, Your Majesty.

I’m afraid you don't

understand, Rupert.

I cannot grant the favour you

ask.

You see, the Dove of Dawn only

has one tail feather.

If you take this feather, the

dove will never fly again.

But without the tail feather,

Tiger Lily will never awaken

from the spell of the Twilight

Fan.

A bird cannot be happy if it

cannot fly.

Is there no other way to help

your friend?

No.

DOVEThen take my feather.

What?

I will gladly give you my

feather if it will save your

friend.

I could never be happy knowing

that I had the power to save a

little girl and did nothing.

No.

But what about your friend?

The Conjuror said Tiger Lily

could be awakened by fanning her

with a tail feather of the Dove

of Dawn.

He didn’t say anything about

removing it.

Your Majesty, could the dove

come back with me back to

Nutwood?

Of course, Rupert.

Both of you are welcome any time

in the Bird Kingdom.

I suppose I could even get used

to your flying machine.

I can understand how flightless

creatures must want to

experience a bird’s joy of

flying.

Penguins too.

Perhaps when you return, you

could give the penguins flying

lessons.

It would be my pleasure, Your

Majesty.

And now to Nutwood.

Goodbye!

It worked!

What--

What happened?

Oh, Tiger Lily, my precious

daughter.

I must have fallen asleep.

Oh, yes, my little blossom.

But now you have awakened.

And that is all that matters.

(Nose blowing)

I want to thank you, both of

you.

Helping is what helpers do

best.

It was an honour, Rupert.

Now I must return.

Farwell.

Goodbye!

Why you meddling little bear!

Tung Lai!

You have interfered enough.

Tung Lai, it is you who has

interfered!

Ah, Conjuror, now finally I

will take my revenge!

Father, Father!

No!

Remember the first rule of

magicthings are not always as

they seem.

You have one chance.

Which of us is your true

opponent?

Choose wisely.

(Laughing)

Fool!

Oh, no, Father!

And now you, little bear!

It is you who are the fool,

Tung, Lai.

(Gasping)

(Groaning)

(Cawing)

Oh, Father!

How--

How did you do that?

Rupert, a good magician never

reveals his secrets.

Now if I recall correctly, we

were about to sit down to lunch.

(Laughing)

Perhaps we can find some worms

for you, Tung Lai.

(Children laughing)

TIGER LILYBoo!

RUPERTAh!

TIGER LILYI scared you

again, Rupert.

RUPERTI wasn’t scared.

TIGER LILYThen why did you

jump?

RUPERTI didn’t jump.

Well, maybe just a little.
