[THEME MUSIC]

-Um, Well, you want to
say something, Bobby?
-No.

Don't you, Howie?

-No.

-OK, then let's start the show.

-Fine.

[THEME MUSIC]

-Shapes.

I hate shapes.

Why does it always
have to be shapes?
[BAT SCREECHING]

-Bobby, look.

Markings of the
dreaded algebra tribe.
we're in danger, huh?

-Yes, but don't worry my
faithful side-kick, Toronto,
you're with me, the famous
explorer and fearless
adventurer, Illinois Generic.

Poisonous snakes don't scare me.

Tribal spears don't scare me.

Even my pediatrician, Dr.
Needleman, doesn't scare me.
-It's shot time, Bobby.

-That doesn't scare me.

[MENACING MUSIC]

-Shapes!

That scares me!

TORONTO: Bobby,
Bobby, they found us!
-And x plus z is y. x plus--

-Uh, oh!

The exotic and possibly
hostile algebra tribe.
-There's only one way out.

We have to grab the
golden triangle.
-I do?

-x plus z is y.

TORONTO: The triangle!

Grab the triangle, Bobby!

[ALGEBRA TRIBE CHANTING]

-The triangle.

I can't remember which
one's the triangle!
-Uh-oh!

Four sides.

I just remembered,
this one's a square.
[RUMBLING]

HOWARD GENERIC: Bobby!

Bobby!

Bobby, you're going
to be late for school.
Wake up.

-School!

[SIGH]

-I- I- I don't- I don't
think I can go today, dad.
I- I uh, I got a tummy ache.

Yeah.

Yeah, I got a tummy ache, and
uh, oh-oh, I got a headache.
Uh, yeah, a tummy
ache and a headache.
And a- a boo-boo.

See, I got a boo-boo.

Yeah.

Yeah, I got a tummy ache and
a headache and a boo-boo.
And uh, my hair hurts, yeah.

My hair hurts and uh--

-And you have a test
on shapes, young man.
Bobby, I know you're
scared because this
is your first test, but
you're going to ace it.
I promise you, because
you're a Generic, Bobby.
That's my name.

-Poor Bobby.

I feel sorry for the little guy.

He's really worried sick about
his-- this shapes test, Martha.
-Then can I have his pancakes?

-Oh, for crying sakes, Derek.

Show some concern for
your little brother.
He's just plain worn himself
our worrying about his test,
don't you know?

Eat your cereal, Bobby.

Uncle Ted will be
here any minute
to take you kids to school.

[GRUNTING]

-My arms feel funny.

They won't reach.

-I know that feeling, Bobbo.

It usually means you got
your shirt on backwards.
-It does?

MARTHA GENERIC: Oh, for
the love of Mike, hon.
How did this happen?

-My mind was so busy worrying
about my shapes test,
it didn't have time to
think about anything else.
-Oh, he's taking a test.

[LAUGHING]

No wonder he's worried sick.

Tests are the worst.

You do bad on a test,
you're marked for life.
-You are?

-OK.

Like, Just relax, Bobby.

Like, all you have to
do is do your best, OK?
-Yeah, you can get away with
that doing your best stuff now,
but when you the real
school you better
start cranking out those A's.

-When you're feeling bad, you
can always count on brothers
to think of stuff that
makes you feel even badder.
-Derek's right, Bobbo.

Take my friend, Lazno.

First test I remember him
failing-- third grade spelling.
Yep, that was the beginning.

After that, we're talking failed
marriage, failed business.
Entire nest egg invested in
a failed savings and loan.
-[WHISPERING] Uncle Ted.

Would you-- uh, lighten up, OK?

Oh, uh, OK Bobbo.

So maybe he did end
up in the slammer,
but he always had his health.

[DISHES CLATTERING]

[FRENCH ACCENT]

-Stevie, take out the trash.

CHEF: No, wait.

That is the stinky can.

Give it to Bobby.

He is a failure.

He failed his shapes test.

All right, men.

Today is cage cleaning day.

Generic--

It's GEN-er-ic.

Uh, yeah, whatever.

You clean the monkey cage.

MAN: Oh, no, no,
wait. you're the one
who couldn't
remember your shapes.
[SCOFFS]

You get the elephant cage.

[LAUGHS]

[ELEPHANTS LAUGHING]

UNCLE TED: Hey, Bobbo, cheer up.

We're here.

We're- we're at school already?

Relax, buddy.

You're taking a test on shapes.

how hard can it be?

Oh, glad it's him and not me.

Tests make me sweat.

[TIRES SQUEALING]

-All clear.

Come on Bobby.

How's my best buddy today?

Fine.

-Fine.

OK, Bobby, start 'em up
again, just like I showed you.
[WHISTLE BLOWING]

Good, Bobby.

Good.

You have a good
day in school now.
And don't you worry
about that test.
You'll do fine.

How come when
grown-ups tell you not
to worry all it does
is make you worry more?
[SCHOOL BELL RINGING]

-All right, class.

You'll have five minutes to
finish your shapes tests.
And remember, there's
to be no talking.
And make sure you keep your
eyes on your own paper.
-No!

Come back!

You're supposed to
stay on my paper!
[CRASHING]

-All right boys and
girls, time's up.
-Oh no!

I forgot to do my test.

I'm a failure.

-I'm a failure.

-That was easy.

How'd you do on the
shapes test, Bobby?
[BELL RINGING]

-And remember class, tomorrow
we start learning our colors.
And we're going
to begin with red.
-Wouldn't you know she'd
start with a tough one.
-Ohhh.

-That's an awfully long face
for such a short person.
What's making my
special buddy so sad?
-My eyes rolled away, and they
made me carry the stinky can,
and I have to do elephants,
and I didn't make any shapes,
and I'm a failure,
and tomorrow's red.
-Hmmm.

I think I understand.

-He's amazing.

-Don't worry about
being a failure, Bobby.
A person is never
a failure as long
as he does his very best
at what he's got to do.
-Even if it's emptying
the stinky can?
-Especially if it's
emptying the stinky can.
That's the one
that's going to make
people sick when they smell it.

That's the one that needs a
good man to take care of it.
One who cares about
doing his best.
Remember, Bobby, no
matter what job you have,
you're never a failure
if you do your best.
And doing your best
makes you feel great.
-Yeah, but I still
don't know my shapes.
-Shapes?

that's what's bothering you?

[LAUGHING]

Shapes are easy to learn.

A circle's got no corners.

It just goes round and round.

And a square?

Easy.

It's just like the top
of Mr. Kessler's hair.
And a triangle, three
sides, three corners.
Piece of cake.

[LAUGHING]

Or a piece of pizza.

-Or the end of a bike rack.

Or the ear on a cat.

-Right!

Just like that.

-Hey!

I'm learning my shapes!

-That's because you're starting
to hear the music, Bobby.
-The music?

-There's music everywhere.

-There is?

-Hear it, Bobby?

The music, in the streets,
in the trees, in the air.
The big, blue bus,
a track team coach--
[BLOWS WHISTLE]

--and the jump rope over there.

See, Bobby.

[SINGING]

There's music everywhere.

-An engine roars, or
your grandpa snores,
and a puppy scratches on doors.

[SINGING]

That's life playing you a tune,
using a garbage can for a drum,
and a car horn for a bassoon.

[CAR HORN HONKING]

[SINGING]

-There's music everywhere.

-And see the shape in there?

The helicopter circling,
and the traffic
in the square, and the
bells in the late afternoon.
[BELLS RINGING]

[SINGING]

-That's not just
stuff making noise,
that's life playing you a tune.

[SINGING]

-There's music everywhere.

In the streets, in
the trees, in the air.
[SINGING TOGETHER]

-There's music everywhere.

DEREK: Hey, dweeb.

Snap out of it.

It's time to go home.

-OK.

Bye, Abe!

-Bye, Bobby!

And don't forget to listen,
the music is everywhere!
-Where.

Like Mr. Kessler's hair.

-So, squirt.

How's you do on your big test?

-Brothers can be very
depressing people.
Hey, Derek!

-What?

[CLANK]

[RINGING]

[CLANKING]

-Listen to the music.

[CLANKING]

MARTHA GENERIC: Well,
Bobby's been making that gee
golly racket all
weekend, Howard.
HOWARD GENERIC: Oh, don't
worry about it Martha.
It's probably just a phase.

-La, la, la, la, la, la.

[DOG BARKING]

MARTHA GENERIC: Oh, that is it.

I can't take it any more!

[SIGH]

Honey, be a good
boy, and stop making
all that gee golly
noise now, vignette.
[DOG BARKING]

Oh, for corn sakes.

Put a sock in it!

-But mom.

Me and Roger are making music.

-Music?

Right.

-Face it, mom, the little
dweeb's off his rocker.
[BEEPING]

[DOG BARKING]

[PHONE RINGING]

-Oh!

Now the phone's ringing!

Oh, this place is turning
into a gee golly madhouse
don't you know!

[PHONE RINGING]

-I'll get it!

Hello, Generic residence.

-Well, who is it, Howard?

-[WHISPERING] It's
Bobby's teacher, Martha.
She started going
over the shapes test
the kids took last Friday.

She says Bobby's paper's blank.

-Am I in trouble?

-Your teacher said you
left your test blank.
Blank?

What kind of thing is that?

You were day dreaming
again, weren't you, Bobby?
-Yes.

-You're in school now, son.

You're growing up.

You've, you've got to
start paying attention.
Do you understand?

-Uh-huh.

-I remember when my dad caught
me goofing off in school.
He set me straight in a hurry.

Yes, sir.

We had quite a talk, and let me
tell you something, young man,
I hung onto his every word.

-You did?

-Yes.

Every word.

I was a good little boy.

[LAUGHING]

-A very good little boy.

I'll tell you something.

[VOICE FADING]

When I was in class,
I always listened.
And, and there was two things
that I've always learned
in school, and that was to
listen and pay attention.
I always had to pay attention--

[VOICE GETTING FASTER AND
FASTER]
-Wow!

Wow!

Wow!

-Bobby!

Are you paying attention
to what I'm saying?
-Yep.

I hanged on every word.
'Cept for the last one.
It had a lot of S's in it.

It was kind of slippery.

Hey, what's going on?

How come Abe's not here?

[BREATHING HARD]

-We better get a move on.

I don't know how long I'll
be able to keep them at bay.
It's a jungle out here.

-Where's Abe?

-Well, uh, the thing
is, well, he's gone.
-Well, will he back soon?

-No!

-[KINDLY] No, he, he wont.

-How come?

-Gee, kid, uh, I wish
I knew how to say this.
Over the weekend
Abe passed away.
-Oh.

The when will he be back?

-Abe's not coming back, Bobby.

-Why?

-Well, Abe is dead, Bobby.

He's gone.

-Gone?

Is he, is he going
to be gone forever?
-Yes, fo-- forever, Bobby.

-That's no fair!

Ah!

Abe is my friend.

I don't-- I don't
want him to be gone!
I-- I feel, I feel
real bad, daddy.
-I know you do, Bobby.

See, when, when, when
somebody we love dies,
it makes our heart hurt, and,
and that makes us feel sad.
[CRYING]

-You know, you know, even
though Abe won't be coming back,
in, in some ways he isn't gone.

-He, he isn't?

-No.

No, because the people we love
never completely leave us.
As long as we remember
them, part of them
is still with us,
inside our hearts.
And that's true when we remember
the things they taught us, too.
-Like, like shapes?

-Shapes?

-Yeah.

'Cause of Abe I know my shapes.

See, dad, that's a circle.

No corners.

It just goes round and round.

And a square.

That's just like
Mr. Kessler's hair.
-Mr. Kessler's hair?

-Sure.

See, dad?

Four corners, four
sides, all just the same.
Do you want to know
about a triangle,
dad?That's a piece of pizza.

Or the end of a bike rack.

It's anything with three
corners and three sides.
Abe taught me that.

Pretty great, huh dad?

Uh-oh, this isn't so great.

This is how everything was we
had to take our shapes test.
-Bobby, your teacher
and I had a talk,
and she's agree to let you
take the shapes test again.
Isn't that good news?

-No.

Another shapes test.

Now I'm going to be a
failure two times in a row.
-[SADLY] Ohhhh.

Wait a minute.

I don't have to be scared.

I know my shapes!

-All right, Bobby, let's begin.

Can you draw a triangle for me?

-No problem.

Piece of pizza.

-We've had a busy day, boys
and girls, but a good one.
[BELL RINGING]

Class dismissed.

See you tomorrow.

-Oh, Bobby.

Congratulations!

You got every shape right.

-Very impressive, Bobby.

[KISSING]

-Yuck!

Thanks.

-And, Bobby, this
is for you, too.
Abe's wife stopped by
this morning and left it.
She said Abe would have
wanted you to have it.
-Wow!

Abe's baton!

And, and, and his whistle, too!

[HORNS HONKING]

[WHISTLE BLOWS]

-Abe is dead?

I don't like the
sound of that, Bobby.
It makes me feel very unhappy.

[SNIFFS]

-I know, Jackie.

See, when somebody
you love goes away
forever it makes
our hearts hurt.
But dad 'splained me something
nice about when people die.
That they don't have
to get lost 'pletely.
-They don't?

-No.

Not as long as we 'emember 'em.

And we member the stuff
they showed us how to do.
-Bobby, Jackie, it's
1:30, time to go home.
It's 2:15, and we haven't gotten
through the intersection yet.
-Dad?

I got a great idea.

How do you think if--

[TRAFFIC NOISES]

-Excuse me.

Excuse me.

-Uh, what?

What?

-My son was wondering if--

-Gee, uh, I, I don't know.

-Look at it this way,
what have you got to lose?
-[ANGRILY] Come on,
let's get moving!
-Hey, where'd you
get your license?
[PEOPLE YELLING]

-I give up.

Go ahead, kid, take
your best shot.
-She said, OK, dad!

[ENGINE REVVING]

[HORN HONKING]

[TIRES SQUEALING]

[ENGINE REVVING]

[BLOWS WHISTLE]

BOBBY [VOICEOVER]: The big,
blue bus, the track team coach,
and the jump rope over there.

[SINGING]

That's life playing you a tune
using a garbage can for a drum,
and a car horn for a bassoon.

There's music everywhere.

-That's incredible, kid.

How do you do it?

-You just listen to the music.

BOBBY [VOICEOVER]:

[SINGING]

That's not just
stuff making noise,
that's life playing you a tune.

There's music everywhere.

In the streets, in
the trees, in the air,
There's music everywhere.

-Hey, they're playing my song.

-Good night, Bobby.

-Good night, Howie.

-Yeah, I'm going to
go to sleep now, too.
-Why?

-Well, because I
want to get up early.
Starting tomorrow I'm
going to start exercising.
-Why?

-Because I've decided
to get into shape.
-Wow!

I just learned about that.

Are you going to be
a circle or a square?
See, I know my shapes.

[LAUGHING]

-Bobby, don't be silly.

The kind of shape I want
to get into is a triangle.
-To-da-loo.

[THEME MUSIC]
