NARRATOR:
Man lives in the sunlit world

of what he believes
to be reality.

But... there is,

unseen by most, an underworld.

A place that is just as real

but not as brightly lit.

A dark side.

[gentle pattering]

WOMAN [faintly]: The Florence
Bravo house was the scene of...

[door shuts]

It's a very colorful story.

The maid let herself
in one morning

and discovered the body
of Charles Bravo--
[murmurs]

known ladies' man--
shot to death.

The, uh, the police found

Florence Bravo upstairs
on her rocker,

doing some, uh,
some needlepoint.

She denied ever
hearing the shots

or even knowing where her
husband was at the time.

When the police told her that
her husband was downstairs,

lying in a pool of blood,

she just smiled and said,

"He's dead, I hope."

So, what happened?

Was she ever brought
to trial? I...

Oh, sure, sure.

Everybody knew she
was guilty as sin,

but they couldn't prove it.

See, she'd hidden
the g*n too well.

Oh, you know, there's an old
lady down in the village

who still talks
about the trial.

Apparently, Florence put on
quite a show for the jury.

Some people say
she was a feminist,

way ahead of her time, but...

most people say she just...

she just hated men.

David, come look
at these moldings.

Yeah.

They're beautiful.

Very nice.

Oh, all the woodwork
is original to the house.

Oh, yeah?

Even that woodwork?

Oh, well, these boards
can easily be replaced,

or-or covered
with wall-to-wall.

It isn't that bad, is it?

I don't know, hon.

Some of it's in
pretty rough shape.

That's part
of why I like it.

Now, this could be

a bedroom or a study.

It's great.

It's got a great
shape, you know?

I think it could
be the bedroom.

[chuckles]

Plenty of light.

Oh.

That's wonderful.

I think that rocker's been here
a good long time, too.

Why would anybody want

to abandon anything
so beautiful?

It is cold in
here, isn't it?

Oh, well,
one thing you can't do

is shut out the drafts
in these older homes.

I don't care.

I love this place.

And I want to
live here. David?

Hmm... Now, I admit, it's got
a lot of historical value,

and I would love
to see some materials

on the history
of the place and the mur--

Actually, actually,
I am a member

of the Bucks County
Historical Society.

So, I-I could dig up
everything we have for you.

Well?

Well, if it makes you happy.

Oh.

This is wonderful.

Starting a new beginning.

A new job, a new house.

We've been married 11 years.

A lot gets old and worn-
out in that much time.

Emily,
I don't think Juliann

needs a lecture
on married life.

It's okay to feel good about
a new beginning, David.

Like when a snake
sheds its old skin,

it just wriggles out
and squirms away.

That's how good I feel.

I'm sure you'll be very
happy here, Mrs. McCall.

JULIANN:
It... it looks like
we've got a sale here.

Why don't we go down...

[door shuts]

[creaking]

It's funny how I get so
nervous the first day.

You forgetting anything?

No, I don't think so.

Hmm...

Except maybe...

my glasses.

So, what are you
going to do today?

Well, I need to pick out
the paint for the guest room.

And I really should
clean out that fireplace.

"Clean out fireplace."

Oh, I talked to Bill Cunningham
in the Art Department.

He said there's a job opening.

Why don't you stop by
and introduce yourself?

Oh, I don't know, David.

I-I really have a lot
to do around here.

[sighs]

I just don't know
if I'm ready yet.

You taking your pills?

Well, maybe I've missed a few.

But I've been feeling
so happy lately.

The pills make me think
like I'm still sick.

Well, you're not.

You're well.
You're 100%.

Just... why don't you
keep taking them

until you're well-adjusted here?

And call Bill Cunningham.

[door shuts]

[sighs]

[door shuts in distance]

[sighs]

You're getting old, Emily.

[car starts in distance]

[phone ringing]

Hello?

JULIANN:
Is David there?

Who's calling?

I...
Oh, Juliann.

I need to speak
to your husband.

Oh, um,
I can give him a message.

I'll call back.

[line clicks]

[clock ticking]

WOMAN:
He's making a fool out of you.

You must stop him.

STEVE:
Emily!

Up here!

Two classes
of Intro back to back.

It's a new form of t*rture.

Here I am, being
really brilliant,

making this point.

This kid's hand goes up.

I say, "Great. I'm really
reaching somebody."

And this kid says, "Dr. McCall,

does this class satisfy
a Humanities requirement?"

I wanted to k*ll him.

So, are there any beautiful
coeds in any of your classes?

I was only joking.

I don't think that's anything
we ought to joke about.

You had a phone call from
Juliann Hanratty today.

Great. She's probably got
the stuff from the Bravo m*rder.

I wouldn't know.
She didn't care to speak to me.

I don't think I like your tone.

I don't think I like you
getting calls from other women.

Other women?

This is somebody
doing research for me.

You are being a royal pain.

You act like I'm the
one that cheated on you.

[floorboards creaking]

What's the matter?

I don't know.

I just suddenly felt

dizzy, drained...

like I was gonna pass out.

[sighs]

I'm all right now.

Look, we've just got
to forget about the past.

You're going to have
to have faith in me.

Okay?

WOMAN: You're a fool
if you believe him.

[creaking]

All men cheat.

They think it's their right.

You're not real.

He loves me.

You used to want to spend every
minute together making love.

[chuckles] I'm just
getting old, okay?

You're gonna have
to remind me, that's all.

That's all right, David.

I don't need
to be undressed all the time.

I just need to know that
you'll always be there for me.

When I had my breakdown,

and you signed me
into that hospital,

I know you thought it was
the right thing to do.

But it was horrible.

All those poor, lost people...

wandering through the halls...

each one trapped
in their own private hell...

Nobody caring about them.

Nobody loved them.

I can't bear to be alone
in the world, David.

You're not alone.

You got me.

[creaking]

[distant sigh]

[panting, moaning]

[screams]

[panting]

Emily?
[sighs]

Just relax.

[gasping]
Easy, easy.

You had a nightmare.

Easy.

Hey. I'm gonna
go get your pill.

[exhales]

[panting]

[light switch clicks]

[exhales]

Here, take your pill.

Emily?

Em, it'll make you feel better.

Well, you scared me.

You looked at me
like I had two heads.

[panting]

I'm sorry, David.

Yeah, Tuesday's fine.

[chuckles]: Yeah. As in
three days from today.

Uh, Fairweather's right
past Brooks, right?

Great. Thanks a lot.

[laughs]

All right.

All right, you have
a good weekend, too.

Yeah. Bye.

Why did you do that?

Because this job is
gonna be the best thing
in the world for you.

Don't make my decisions
for me, okay?

Come on, look at yourself--
you're starting to spend

all your time
in this house here.

That was part of the agreement
when we bought it, remember?

We were going to fix it up.

I know, but it's like
you're afraid to go out.

I am not.

You're shutting
yourself in here.

You're daydreaming and
polishing knickknacks...

I'm trying to make
a home for us, David.

What do you want me to do?
Do you want me to be like you?

You want me to go out and
make some close friends?

[softly]:
Stop it.

Hey. You're starting
to act like you did before.

Am I, David?

Or are you?

[knocking at door]

[knocking continues]

JULIANN: David! Hi!
It's nice to see you!
Yeah.

You, too, Juliann.
Thanks.

Yeah.

I hope this isn't
a bad time for you.

DAVID:
No, not at all.

No, no, not at all.

Is it, hon?

JULIANN:
Good. Hey,
you know,

that is only half
the stuff from Philly.

I have a whole
other box in the trunk.

DAVID:
Oh, that's great.
Just incredible stuff.

DAVID:
Look, it says here

that Florence Bravo shot
her husband three times.

Huh. Guess she wanted to
put him out of commission.

[chuckles]

He must have
hurt her very badly.

Evidently.

DAVID:
Hey...

ladies, look at this.

This is the exact spot

where Charles Bravo
bled to death.

Ah, that explains

why the floorboards
were replaced.

Ooh, I wonder where
she hid that g*n.

[Juliann groans]

[groans]

DAVID:
Are you all right?

[sighing]:
I don't... know.

Come on, I'll take you
outside, get some air.

[door shuts]

FLORENCE:
Emily?

When they're alone,
he makes love to her.

I won't allow filth
and lewdness here.

Pay him back, Emily.

[clock ticking]

Good luck on
your interview, hmm?

[door creaks]

[clock ticking, birds chirping]

[sighs]

[sighs]

[ticking continues]

[birds continue chirping]

[heaves a sigh]

[ticking continues]

[rhythmic creaking]

FLORENCE:
Emily...

What are you doing here?

[chair creaking]

I'm here to help you.

David loves me.

You're not real.

You'll see that
you must k*ll him,

as I k*lled
the man who betrayed me.

[footsteps]

Of course I was guilty...

...in some sense of the word.

He never knew
what was coming.

He was standing right here.

The first shot went through
his hand and into his chest.

He ran downstairs
like a madman.

I shot again.

He continued to run.

I caught up with him
in the parlor,

and I put the g*n to his head.

[b*llet clacks into chamber]

He was the guilty one,
don't you see?

Guilty of the crimes all men
commit against their wives.

They marry us and put us
in a wallpapered prison.

Then they find wh*res
to share their beds with.

And the miserable, cramped,
empty life they leave us

is cut down even smaller.

[barrel clicks]

I was justified
in k*lling him.

For the life he took

from me...

he owed me his life.

[door opens]
DAVID:
Here.

Let me get that for you.
[door closes]

[rhythmic creaking]

FLORENCE:
He's making a fool out of you.

JULIANN:
Is Emily around?

DAVID:
No, no, she won't be back
for at least an hour.

[clock ticking]

JULIANN [chuckles]:
Well, David, does she know?

DAVID:
No, I haven't had

the nerve to bring it up.

Look, I don't want
to upset her any more
than she already is,

but I'm feeling
trapped here;

it's not working out.

We've got to leave.

JULIANN:
Oh, David, don't
fight your feelings.

You'll never be
happy if you do.

Hey, but if-if you decide
to sell the house now,

I just... I don't see
how you'll break even.

You'll never recoup
the closing costs.

[laughs]: Money is the
least of my worries.

This house was a bad idea.

There's just
too much history here

for her imagination
to play with.

She's starting
to brood,

isolate herself.

I want to get her with people,

activities, you know?

Well... look, David,

I... I think I have
just the answer.

You know, um, County Realty
handles all the faculty housing.

That way, you'll...
you'll be right next door

to other professors
and their wives.

[sobbing]
[floorboards creaking]

FLORENCE:
Don't cry, Emily.

You must stop him.

[creaking continues]

Em?

What are you
doing here?

You-You're supposed to have
a meeting with Bill Cunningham.

Did your wh*re leave?

What?

Em...

[g*nsh*t]

[grunting]

You owe me this, David...

for the life you
tried to take away.

Emily, no.

You wanted to run away with her
and leave me alone.

[g*nsh*t]

[panting]

FLORENCE:
sh**t him, Emily.

He's an evil man.

Pull the trigger, Emily.

[g*nsh*t]

[creaking]

[murmured conversation]
