S02E02 - The Call

I work the shadows
and he works the light.

Two times I've used
my JLA resources

to repair a terrible,

a fatal improbability.

Even with everything plotted,
and calculated

to the most microscopic detail,

even with every
contingency considered,

with every
potential flaw examined,

sometimes the unaccountable,

the ultimately
inevitable occurs,

and it all goes
wrong for some innocent.

Once before, now a second time,

over an entire damn career.

Her descending aorta
has exploded

and she will never last
the seven minutes

until the EMTS arrive,

let alone until
they get her to surgery.

When it comes to this,

when survival is beyond
my field capabilities,

when the remainder
of an innocent life

can be measured in seconds,

I make the call.
Where is he?

She's not gonna last.

Where the hell is...

What have ya done this time?

Not now, no time.

She's almost gone.

Tell me what happened.

Focus on her,
do what I tell you.

Just be a good tool, eh?

Her aorta is blown apart.

Too much blood
to get a clear look.

No problem,
I can see right through.

I'll assess the damage.

Now, tell me what happened.

What does he want me to
tell him?

That I was careless?

That I made a mistake?

Well, I wasn't and I didn't.

I had everything
calculated as always.

I had the inner circle

of the Creighton Import Cartel

stocked and pinned to
the perfect opportunity

for a bit of interface.

I found it.

It's ripped open about
eight inches below the heart.

Well, you've got to seal it.

A company social gathering,

light security,
no heavy ordinance,

but because I never
assume anything

I waited for the precise moment

that brought the greatest amount
of space

between the creightons
and their entertainment.

Except for one loose cannon

who had broken the company code,

that somehow smuggled his piece

past their internal security,

and a split second before I
could incapacitate him

the idiot hurried an
ineffectual, meaningless shot

that took a crazy bounce.

And... another
unfortunate casualty

in the w*r on crime.

I'm done, that ought to hold.

She'll survive transport
to the hospital.

Thank god.

I owe you.

You owe me twice over.

And maybe you owe others, too.

How many times
have you called Supergirl?

John Jones?

Never.
Only you.

Still, two times
your vigilante tactics

would've led to the death
of an innocent if...

If I didn't have such
a talented acquaintance?

That's true.
My connections allow me

to take chances
I couldn't otherwise.

But this was not the result
of my taking chances.

I do not take
chances with lives.

I calculate everything,

and once in a very great while
none of that matters.

Certainly, but the way
you push the limits,

I'm amazed you've
only called twice.

Don't pull high and mighty
on me.

You know I do
what needs to be done.

Two times over
an entire career...

Is two times too many.

Above all else
we should do no harm.

I just might leave you

to the consequences your
actions.

No, you won't. You need someone
like me walk in trenches.

This isn't the way
it was supposed to be.

We're supposed to be
better than this.

Treat her for shock.

I work the shadows
and he works the light.

I know that essentially

we cover distinct
and separate magistery.

Still, the light defines
the shadows.

Without light shadow becomes

nothing but
all-engulfing darkness

and I know, he's right.

I can hear the paramedics
coming up the stairs.
