03x01 - All That Glisters

Post by bunniefuu »

[Miranda]
Previously on The Mallorca Files.

Welcome to Mallorca, Detective Blake.

I work better alone.

[Inés] Detective Winter will join you.

Stop! Police!

And of course,
he's already saved your life.

[Max] They sent me over from Munich
as a liaison officer,

but I liked it so much,
I asked to stay.

Partners!

- Compañeros?
- No, I'm not hugging you.

[singing opera]

[Inés] His grasp
of the local language is faultless,

unlike his grasp of correct procedure.

[Miranda] Yes, you should have
listened to me

because I know
what the hell I'm doing.

Of course!

Miranda Blake saving us all
with her fantastic police work.

[grunting]

[Max]
I think you need a little Mallorca time.

Stop asking me to pick up
dry cleaning.

- I'm not your secretary, Max.
- I asked once.

[woman] She's a workaholic.
Never have a relationship.

[Miranda] Just because I don't go around
being overly tactile,

and thinking every stranger
is just a friend I haven't met yet,

doesn't make me inhuman,
repressed, or anti-social.

- I have a life!
- Whoa!

- Come on.
- No!

[Max] Detective Blake
is not my girlfriend.

I'm not his girlfriend.

- We probably should get married.
- I'll think about it.

[Miranda] You know, for a man who prides
himself on his emotional intelligence,

you're an absolute idiot.

[Carmen] You tell your office wife
to maybe keep to office hours.

Yee-haw!

That's Detective Tonto to you.

- Great minds.
- [Miranda] Stay with me, 007.

[reporter] Three months ago
Alberto Alvarez,

a geography teacher from Palma

walked into the Mallorca Mint,

bought a million euros of gold
and used it to make this.

His Golden Compass.

Alberto then buried his compass
somewhere in Mallorca,

published ten clues in the Mallorca Times

and kicked off the biggest treasure hunt
the island has ever known.

“Golden Legacy.”

[reporter] Mr. Alvarez.

A lot of people now believe
Golden Legacy is a scam.

Nonsense! The Golden Compass is out there.

The issue here is--
The real issue is that

nobody has solved my puzzle.

We understand you’ve started
receiving threats.

Ah, it’s nothing.

Just some silly people calling
to say that they will break my legs

if I don’t tell them where
I have buried the Golden Compass.

-Can you believe that?
- They don't worry you?

[Alberto] I ignore them.

Some say your puzzle is impossible.

[laughs] No, no, no, no.

It is entirely solvable.

You just need a little bit of persistence,

some lateral thinking
and perhaps a little bravery.

May I remind viewers
how it works?

- [phone vibrates]
- [Miranda] Max? Returning your call.

Oh, yeah.
You'll never guess what.

You've had your hair shaved off.

[laughs]
It's even more shocking than that.

My dad’s coming to visit.
He’s flying in tomorrow.

It's the first time
in my six years in Mallorca.

Oh, wow. What’s brought this on?

I'm not entirely sure.

But he did say he’s looking forward
to meeting his future daughter in law.

Wait. You haven’t told him
about you and Carmen?

- I was building up to it.
- Max!

It’ll be fine. I’m excited.

I can finally show him my island.

And doing puzzles was a thing for us, so

maybe he can help me solve Golden Legacy.

- Ugh. What, that hoax?
- It's not a hoax.

[Miranda] Oh, come on. It’s one big
publicity stunt for Google or Amazon.

The only people still bothering with that
are gullible fools.

Well, I guess that makes me a fool.

Go on, then.
How close are you to the treasure?

- I’ve solved two clues.
- Two? Out of ten?

Well,

I’ve narrowed it down
to the left half of the island.

Oh, plain sailing from here on in then.

- [Alberto] Hello.
- Max?

[Alberto] I'll give you my word.
The Golden Compass--

- Max?
- It is buried somewhere out there.

- [Miranda] Are you there?
- And it will stay buried

until somebody solves my puzzle.

Perhaps that someone will be you.

- [Miranda] Hello?
- [pensive music playing]

[crew murmuring]

[speaking Spanish]

- [tense music playing]
- No, no.

[theme song playing]

[Miranda] “Alberto Alvarez is alive

but he will be shot
in exactly twenty four hours

unless you hand over the
Golden Compass.

Further instructions in twelve hours."

Received in an email at 8am.
They’re trying to trace it.

What about Alberto’s phone?

It's been switched off
since the abduction.

It says an alert is about to go out
on all media platforms

about the van and the ransom request.
Why the ransom request?

Alberto claims he shared the
location of the Golden Compass

with the person who gave him
the million euros.

So we need that person to come forward.

[reporters murmuring]

[reporters shouting indistinctly]

Police.

[reporter] Do you think Alberto Alvarez
is already dead?

What if this benefactor
doesn’t come forward?

Then we’ll just have to find
the compass ourselves.

Yeah right.

- Hola. Miranda Blake.
- Hi.

- Reyna. Nice to meet you.
- Max Winter.

Please come in.
It's your first door on the left.

[Miranda] Gracias.

[Max] Rest assured we're doing everything
we can to locate your father.

Do you have any idea who this
mystery benefactor might be?

Dad hates rich people.

Actually, he hates everybody who's not
contributing to the wellbeing of mankind.

So what about the threats?
Has he mentioned those?

The TV interviews
was the first we’d heard of them.

Let’s be honest, Rey,
he hasn’t shared much with us recently.

Oh. Why not?

[sighs] Six months ago,
our dad accused Felipe and I

of stealing money from his study.
He demanded we give the money back.

Which we didn’t
because it wasn’t true.

Since then things have been
a bit tense around here.

How much did he accuse you of stealing?

Fifty euros.

He can be a bit, er, unpredictable.

Dad finds it hard to
keep his craziness in check.

And you both still live at home?

Yup, we failed to launch.

It’s a financial thing.
I am desperate to move out!

- So what do you do?
- I’m an actress.

- Oh.
- [laughs]

- And how’s that working out for you?
- Erm...

Yeah, it’s OK.

She did an ad for an oil company once.
That ticked a lot of boxes for dad.

- So what about you, Felipe?
- Me?

Oh, I play video games for a living.

You see,
we’re both disappointing children.

But I’m definitely
the most disappointing.

I thought me and my dad
was complicated.

Hmm.

This is it.

The desk where Alberto
created Golden Legacy.

[chuckles]

[Miranda] Have less than thou showest,

Speak less than thou knowest,

Lend less than thou owest.

Oh, you know your King Lear.

I did it at school.
I was the Fool.

Hmm, controversial casting.

[Max] It's the receipt for the compass.
And two prototypes.

Wow.
The original Golden Legacy clues.

Have you ever tried
to solve one of these?

Nope.

Well, I guess you don’t have enough
lateral thinking, persistence or bravery.

Er, I have plenty of all of those,
thank you very much.

Just imagine if we did solve
all these clues, Miranda.

Huh?

Got the GPS of the exact spot
the Golden Compass was buried.

- Dug it up.
- Oh yeah? And then what?

Deliver it to the kidnappers
for the big swap?

[rock music playing]

[Miranda] Max!

A British man named Edmund Burgess

threatened to sue Alberto
earlier this year for two million euros.

- Why?
- I don't know. It doesn’t say.

Looks like the case
never made it to court.

Well, there’s someone who could have
an axe to grind against Alberto.

Oh, my God.

These are Alberto’s notes
for Golden Legacy!

- Ah...
- ♪ Ahh ♪

- N-- no.
- It’s evidence.

[phone beeps and vibrates]

Papa
Missed call [10]

Oh, no! Gotta go.

[groovy music playing]

Papa!

I waited for half an hour for you
at the airport.

- I took a taxi to the hotel.
- I’m sorry. I was on a case. So, er...

- Yeah.
- [chuckles]

Did a drunken tourist lose his wallet?

[laughs] Yeah, er, erm...
Actually, it’s a missing person,

so I’m afraid I can’t stay.

Typical.

Well, erm, welcome to my paradise!
[nervously giggles]

Oh, great to see her again.

Oh, yeah. I, er...

I gave her a wax specially.

Sorry. Erm, that’s Miranda.

- I’ll just clear that away...
- Miranda?

I thought her name was Carmen?

Erm...

That’s all he said about Carmen?

That he wasn't that surprised?

I think he was confused.

He kept asking if you were my girlfriend.

Winter! Blake!

- Anywho, I left him with Christian.
- Hm.

Yeah, maybe he’ll bring out
dad’s inner party animal.

I gave them a Golden Legacy clue.

Dad likes to be busy.

- Well?
- OK...

No sightings of the white van,
no word from Alberto’s mystery benefactor

and I’m still waiting on details
of that compensation claim

from Alberto’s solicitor.

Well, we had no luck
tracing the kidnappers’ email

so, in other words, we have nothing.

Not quite.

[wheels squeaking]

The good news is

Alberto’s notebook was very, very helpful.

- What the hell...
- Don't.

It gave me answers to clues at

Soller train station, Alcudia City Walls,

Castell de Bellver and Banys Arabs.

So, I’ve now got six of the GPS numbers.

Six.

So I can now confirm the golden compass,
AKA Alberto’s ransom,

must be buried somewhere here.

That’s nine hundred square kilometres.
At least.

Well, yes,

but Alberto’s notebook also reveals
that one of the four remaining answers

is near Es Pontas.

I don’t even know where that is.

It’s a rock in the sea.

Oh, don’t tell me
you’re going along with this rubbish.

Just, just get him back.
Get him back.

Bravery, persistence, lateral thinking...

- Compañeros?
- No.

- A rock.
- Yup.

In the sea?

[upbeat music playing]

- Can I have a go?
- Nope.

To the left.

[Max] Straight on.

There it is.

[Miranda] A rock in the sea.

According to Alberto’s notes,

we should be able to see
a Mallorca flag from here.

There it is!

- [laughs]
- [honks horn]

Woo! Woo hoo! [laughs]

[grunts]

- What about that thing?
- Huh?

- It's not a number.
- No, it's an eye.

Like in the clue.

And there’s another one. Over there!

It's two eyes.

Both looking in this direction.

[groovy music playing]

[laughs] Brilliant!

- Woo! [laughs] What a team, eh?
- Max!

[Max] Oh, no.

There must have been a freak wave.

No, it was your rubbish knot, Max.

It was a double half hitch.
I learned it at Wolflinge.

I was a silver pioneer.

[Miranda]
Why the hell did I agree to this?!

Hey! Woohoo!
Can you get our boat?

[high pitch whistle]

Can you get our boat?
Thank you!

Thank god.

[Max sighs]

Thank you very much.

Did you use the wrong knot?

- Nope.
- Yes.

Right, well,

one good turn and all that.
What’s the answer to the clue?

- That's why you’re here, isn’t it?
- [chuckles]

It’s six.

- Yeah?
- Mm-hmm.

OK.

So, erm, how many answers have you got?

Seven now.

- There's only three more left to go.
- Same here.

[laughs awkwardly]

We know Alberto Alvarez.

It’s just terrible what’s happened to him.

It's awful.

Actually we’re with Palma police.
We’re looking into his disappearance.

Yup. So you could help us get Alberto back

by sharing answers we don’t have.

Ah, sorry.

But it would actually help to save
Alberto’s life. So...

Ned’s a bit competitive.

Yeah.

Wow. With friends like that...

He's a little worried.
Because we look like winners.

- [phone beeps]
- Nineteen hours to go.

No more detours.
OK, Max?

Huh? Sure.

- Hey guys.
- Max?

- Want one?
- It’s a flying visit.

I told Miranda I was getting a sandwich.

- Successful morning then?
- [Christian] Oh, yeah. [burp]

Three hours in the Military Museum.
Dream come true.

- You liked the anti-tank g*n.
- Yeah, that was ok. And the bayonets.

But the rest? Forget it.

- Well, I actually enjoyed it.
- Oh.

Here.

It's code for canons.

There are four of them in the museum.

- That’s your answer.
- That's amazing. Thanks, Dad.

Once I worked out that he was
actually using the Alberti cypher

it was actually pretty easy.

Hey.

You seriously think this
could save that man’s life?

Absolutely.

Well?

Alberto paid for the gold
with his own money.

- How?
- He transferred three million euros

from his own offshore account
four months ago.

Three million euros?
He’s a geography teacher!

So you had no idea he had that money
or where it came from?

No.

He definitely didn't share
any with us.

Two weeks ago your father withdrew
six thousand euros in cash.

Do you have any idea what that was for?

Who would stand to benefit
from your father's fortune?

Look, we told you,
this is the first we’ve heard of it!

- Wait, if there is no benefactor...
- Then, yeah.

It’s possible that no-one else knows
where the golden compass is buried.

Then how are you going
to pay for the ransom?

Oh, don’t worry, Miss Alvarez.

We’re going to find
that compass ourselves.

[reporters murmuring]

I can’t believe you just said that.

- [phone vibrates]
- I just wanted to give them some hope!

- Oh, finally!
- What?

They’ve found the white van.

[Inés] Returned to Budget Van
in Manacor earlier today.

Adhesive on the windows .
Registration plate tampered with.

This is definitely our van.

So what has it given us?

This is the guy who hired it.

- Dev Harris.
- Mm-hmm.

Do we think that's an alias?

Not clear yet.
We are running searches.

- And I'm chasing London on Edmund Burgess.
- OK.

And we've got one hour till we’re due
to hear from the kidnappers.

[sighs]

[office phones ringing in distance]

Got it!

The first bit of this clue
is a dingbat of Lost City.

- Max...
- I once read a novel called Lost City.

- It’s about scuba diving.
- OK, please!

We've got twelve hours
to save this man’s life. OK?

The kidnappers are due
to make contact any minute.

Concentrate on the case.

[music playing through headphones]

[Max humming the Jaws theme]

Miranda.

[music playing through headphones]

Miranda!

Thanks for coming dad.

Are you absolutely certain this is
what you should be doing right now?

Yes.

[muffled] OK.

DANGER OF DEATH

[suspenseful music playing]

[Max] Just like old times.
Red Sea 2003?

[Thomas] Yes. Though please don’t get
another nosebleed.

[phone ringing]

Hola, Blake.

[speaking Spanish]

AQUARIUM!

[tense music playing]

For God’s sake, Max. Pick up.

[tense music continues]

Just pick up the phone.

[Max] “ROCA X YORE".
That’s code, right?

[Thomas] I think it's an anagram.

Yeah.

[speaking Spanish] Like an arch!

Let's try it!

- [Thomas] Treasure.
-
[Max speaking Spanish]

[uplifting music playing]

[uplifting music abruptly stops]

- [tense music playing]
- [Miranda sighs]

Are you having a nice time?
Are you having a nice time in there?

Out!

Unbelievable.

[grunts]

- That was quite fun.
- Yeah, it was.

So look, Max,

There’s something really important
I need to discuss with you. So...

Let's do dinner.

Sure.

Hey, Miranda.

Only one more clue to go.

- You absolutely--
- So this is the famous Miranda?

Oh, yes. Erm, nice to meet you Mr. Winter.

Sorry I can’t stay and chat.

Max, someone’s come forward.

They’re on their way to the station.

[Miranda] Now!

A few days before Golden Legacy launched,

my dad, he called me up to his study.

[Felipe] He swore me to secrecy,

then he told me he was trusting me
with the location of the golden compass.

He wanted me to take it to the police,
but only if his life was in danger.

I asked him why he had chosen me.

Why not Reyna?

And he said he’d seen Reyna
stealing money from his study.

He wasn’t sure he could trust her.

Why didn’t you come to us before?

Because I really did think
this was a publicity stunt.

But if there is no money man
to come to save him, then...

It's the wrong side of the island.

How deep down would he have buried it?

Deep enough to stop a dog
digging it up by mistake.

- [grunts]
- [loud metallic thud]

[suspenseful music playing]

[Max sighing and gasping]

Thanks.

Still nothing from the kidnappers.

News on Dev Harris, though.

Turns out he’s one
of Alberto’s former pupils.

[Miranda] Clearly didn’t rate him much
as a teacher.

So,

it turns out that all that glistens
is not gold.

- What?
- Mm.

- Solid brass.
- It’s one of Alberto’s prototypes.

Great! So we don’t have
a ransom to hand over!

Why the hell would he leave instructions
to a brass fake?

I don’t know.

But it means the real golden compass
is still out there.

Yeah.

[phone vibrates]

Ah, we’ve found Dev Harris.

[Inés] Someone saw Harris
at a grocery store down the road.

They recognised him from the news

and followed him back
to an abandoned flour factory.

[upbeat music playing]

[music playing through headphones]

Hello?

- Hello!
- Jesus Christ!

Please, don’t k*ll me.

I, I have money or...

Oh, thank god.

Dev Harris. We’re arresting you
for the kidnap of Alberto Alvarez.

- Where is he?
- I think I need a lawyer.

[police talking on radios]

We've got ninety minutes
to get a location from him.

I’m afraid we’ve got a bit
more time than that now.

Oh, no.

[Roberto] Found by a walker.

The crushed bones
suggest Alberto’s body was dropped

from one of the cliffs in the area.

And based on the tide,

he was washed up here
sometime late yesterday evening.

- Yesterday?
- Sí.

You said “body”. So he was already dead
when he was dropped off the cliff?

This... is what k*lled him. Mm?

And it’s not from landing on a rock.

So he wasn't shot?

I’ll obviously do all the DNA checks.

Ah, and one more thing.

I found these in his pockets.

CYTOXAN

Our father didn't deserve to die.

He could be a really difficult person

but he really wanted
to make the world a better place.

Did you know he was ill?

Ill?

No.

Your father was undergoing chemotherapy.

[Reyna cries]

Alberto had advanced bladder cancer.

He’d arranged to write his will
with his solicitor next week.

Golden Legacy.

That was his legacy.

His solicitor also shared
the secret of his wealth.

He invested ten thousand euros
in Bitcoin over a decade ago.

And cashed out at three million euros.

- Clever man.
- Here's the thing though.

Those ten thousand euros were lent to him
by Edmund Burgess.

The bloke who wanted to sue him?

Burgess clearly thought that
he deserved a share.

I'm getting him traced.

Oh, please tell me
you have some good news.

I found carpet fibres on our victim.

But no identifiable DNA.

Nor was any of Alberto’s DNA
at that flour factory.

- Damn it.
- [Roberto] Mm.

Taken by a member of the public.

[Inés] They are saying we failed him,
Winter!

Palma Police wasting time on a swim?
Get me a confession from Harris.

Five thousand euros.
Found in your possessions.

- Who were you working with?
- [laughs]

- Was it Edmund Burgess?
- Who?

What did he do to upset you?

Upset me? Nothing.

Mr. Alvarez was the best teacher
I've ever had.

[Dev laughs]

See, I’m missing the comedy here, Dev.

Alberto’s in the morgue

and if you k*lled him,
forensics will confirm that very shortly.

Wait, what?

He's dead?

[Miranda] My strong advice to you
is to own up.

A confession now
could take years off your sentence.

No. Er, no.

I didn’t k*ll Mr. Alvarez!
Oh, my God!

I’ll show you where I took him.

This is where you brought Alberto?

And then he gave me
the five thousand euros.

Plus the rent
that I’d paid for this place.

- Sorry, who did?
- Mr. Alvarez.

Mr. Alvarez paid me to kidnap him
and bring him here.

The last I saw of him was when
he walked through those doors.

[pensive music playing]

This isn't a prison.

It's a hideaway.

Geocaching

- [error sound]
- [sighs]

So, Dev bumps into Alberto
four months ago in Palma,

Dev tells him that he's skint.

Four weeks ago,
Alberto gets back in touch with Dev

and asks him to stage this kidnap

and then to lie low
for a few days afterwards.

It's only because Dev messes up
and goes to the shop that we find him.

Yeah, but why was Alberto
faking his own kidnap?

All Dev said was it was something
that he needed to do.

[sighs]

Fakecompass

- [error sound]
- [sighs with frustration]

[speaking Spanish]

There has to be a clue
in this computer.

Hm. Edmund Burgess
is a British landscape gardener.

Living in Mallorca. Look familiar?

[birds chirping]

Alberto was a friend.
Or so I thought.

My dad had died and left me some money.

That’s why he asked me to lend him
that ten thousand euros.

Hmm. And thanks to you
he made a fortune.

But wouldn’t give you a cent of profit.

Alberto seemed like this really warm guy.

But when you got close
you found out he was made of ice.

You must have been livid
when the court threw your case out.

See, we think you somehow found out
where Alberto was hiding.

- What?
- [Max] You confronted him.

Demanded he tell you
where the compass was buried.

- I mean, he owed you that.
- [Miranda] Maybe he told you.

Maybe he didn’t.
But either way your anger spilled over.

Yeah he owed me alright.

That’s why we’ve spent the past three
months working on his bloody puzzle. But...

k*ll him?
I’m not that crazy.

Ned has been with me every minute
of the past few days.

And this might surprise you
but he hates confrontation.

Well if they are the K*llers,
there is no sign they did it in there.

[Miranda] OK. Well look,
whoever k*lled Alberto,

let’s just assume
they got the location from him,

they dug up the compass.

Remind me what forensic evidence
they may have left?

Footprints, fibres of clothing.
A cigarette butt if it’s your birthday.

But I would get there quickly
if I were you.

You need to secure that crime scene.

[groovy music playing]

OK, last clue.
We can solve this, Max.

That's Mary.
But why has she been crossed out?

This painting. I’ve seen this recently.

[sighs] Come on, Miranda.

[pensive music playing]

SAINT BARTHOLOMEW

That's it. “Saints Bartholomew
and John with Donor.”

Nice work.

- OK, OK, OK.
- [laughs]

Erm, churches on Mallorca named after
Saint John or Saint Bartholomew?

[sighs] Erm...

Well, there’s a St. Bartholomew's
church in Palma.

St. Bartholomew
formerly known as Santa Maria!

That's it, Max!
That is where the answer is!

[laughs] Lateral thinking.

- Compañera?
- Just get there.

- [sighs]
- What do those mean?

[Max] Follow the line.

But is it up?

Or down?

It’s in the crypt!

[pensive music playing]

[sighs]

[both grunting]

[key and locks rattling]

[door creeks]

- The answer's 18.
- Thanks, guys.

Hey!

Right, I’ve got a compass to dig up.

- Open this door, Burgess!
- Or what?

You’ll lock me up for a month?

- I’ll take that for a million euros.
- Wait, wait, wait, please!

You can keep the compass, OK?

Just let forensics
check the location first.

You accused me of m*rder.
Why the hell should I trust you?

- Why did you shout out the answer?
- [laughs]

What’s so funny, Max?

[giggles]

You said 18.

Mm-hmm. [laughs]
Yeah. I heard someone following us

so, er,

those two will be way out when they dig.

[grunts]

I reckon he followed me to the aquarium
and took that photo.

Probably followed us to the rock as well.

Where's the lever?

[grunts] For the secret exit.

Come on, Miranda.
There’s always a lever.

[speaking Spanish]

[struggling]

- [Miranda speaking Spanish]
- [sighs]

[seagulls mewing]

This is it, Miranda.

X marks the spot.

There's been no digging here.

- No one’s touched it.
- Damn it.

[Max sighs]

If Alberto kept his secret till the end,
why was he k*lled?

And why put a fake compass
on the other side of the island?

The answer's on that computer.
I know it.

Ugh, it’s another one
of his bloody puzzles!

[sighs]

What if the solution is the solution?

SERPENT'S TOOTH

- [squeals]
- [computer beeping]

Now that, Max Winter, is lateral thinking.

- It looks like some kind of tracking app.
- Serpent’s Tooth...

Where have I heard that before?

Well, whatever it is, the black disc...

That's quite close.

It's in the building.

It's in this room.

[computer beeping continues]

[beeping intensifies]

[laughs] He put a tracker
in his fake compass!

Oh, great.
Course he did. Yeah.

Something else that makes absolutely
no sense whatsoever...

[Max] Yup.
And neither does this white disc.

- Max?
- Yeah?

You have a visitor.

Dad? Are you alright?

So he died then?

The man you were supposed to save.

Yes, sir.

Do you know the real reason
why I came to Mallorca, Max?

To help you!

I was going to tell you that
although time is not on your side,

there is still a place for you
back in Munich, in the firm.

But what do I find?
You’re totally unsuited.

You’re an unsuccessful policeman
messing around with puzzles.

You can’t even take care of my car!

It’s so disappointing.

How much sharper than a serpent's tooth
it is to have a thankless child.

What?

King Lear! That’s it!
That’s the answer!

Max? White disc is on the move.

Yeah, and I think I know why.
Thanks, Dad.

You’ve helped us a lot, honestly.

Oh...

Listen,

I’m sorry if you feel I’ve let you down.

[computer beeping]

There were two Golden Legacies.
One was a real treasure hunt.

- The other was a loyalty test.
- OK, go on...

- Alberto had a fortune, right?
- Mm-hmm.

And not long to live.
But he mistrusted his children.

So he challenged them
to prove their love for him.

- Just like King Lear.
- Exactly.

You see, he didn’t just entrust Felipe
with a secret location.

[Max] He did the same to Reyna.

And he buried
the other brass compass there.

Also with a tracker inside.

Then he staged his kidnap and waited.

With dad’s life on the line,
how would his kids respond?

Well, one demonstrated his love by coming
to us and sharing his information.

- And the other showed her greed.
- There you go.

Max.

[suspenseful music playing]

[sirens blaring]

[Max] She's speeding up.

We need to get our hands
on that fake compass.

[Miranda] Could be the m*rder weapon.

[tyres screeching]

[sirens continue]

- [car horn]
- [tyres screeching]

- [gasps]
- [brakes screeching]

[tyres squeaking]

[gasps]

- Oh, God!
- Don't move, Reyna!

Please!

- [car rattling]
- [grunting]

Listen. We know you must have been
angry when your father told you

that you failed his test.

He treated me like an experiment.

A tiny fraction of his fortune
would have made my life bearable.

So he just watched me suffer.
That’s why I had to take the compass.

Then yesterday he surprised you...

[murmuring]

[Max] I imagine he told you
the compass was fake.

And that he’d watched you betray him.
- [indistinct shouting]

And that he now knew
he could never trust you.

[speaking Spanish]

- [grunts]
- [loud thud]

[Reyna] If I am a monster,
it’s because I was raised by one.

- Wait, leave it!
- It's too late, Reyna!

[Miranda] If you push it into the sea,
you'll go with it.

[tense music playing]

[sirens blaring]

[sighs]

I'm sorry if it wasn’t quite the visit
you were expecting, Dad.

But, erm, at least,

we made the front page.

MALLORCA TIMES

Mr. Winter.

Your son cracked
a really challenging case.

And that happens quite a lot here.

He’s one of the best detectives
I’ve ever worked with.

And you should be proud of him.

I’ll go wait in the car.

I’m getting her a full valet tomorrow.

The car, not Miranda.

About Miranda...

[sighs]

I feel twenty kilos lighter.

I love my dad.

And I’ll be very happy for him
to visit again.

- In about six year’s time.
- [laughs]

Any last minute pearls of wisdom?

Nothing I didn’t know already.

[car engine starts]

I feel a bit sorry for them.

I don't.

[laughs]

[Miranda sighs]

Hmm.

- Bet you’re itching to dig it up.
- [laughs]

Well, we solved the puzzle.
That’s enough for me.

We have an expression in German.

"Vorfreude ist die schönste Freude."

It basically means
I enjoy the chase more than the catch.

So about what you said to my father...

Yeah, it's true.

You’re definitely one of the best fifty
detectives I’ve worked with in my career.

Wow. [laughs]

Well, you’re definitely the best Welsh
female detective partner I’ve ever had.

[both laughing]

[upbeat music playing]

[Miranda] This season
on The Mallorca Files.

- [alarm blaring]
- Let's do this.

[police sirens]

[woman screams]

You're fast.
But you're not that fast.

Ramon Silva is

Europe's most notorious
and successful conman.

[glass shattering]

Whoa!

But an escaped prisoner though.
Kind of interesting.

It's hardly Hannibal Lecter, Max.

I need my most diplomatic
and sensitive officers on this case.

[Inés] Suddenly they're not available.
So...

Yup, Max Winter is on the case!

[grunts]

[screams]

[Carmen] I got a new job.
It's in Madrid.

This is a relationship, Max,
not cage fighting.

- I think you need to kiss me.
- I need to kiss you?

Your skills. We are only human.

You know what's the difference
between you and me?

I want to be here more than
I want to be anywhere else.

[Inés] Palma Police! Drop the g*n!
Drop the g*n!

I want this case closed!

[Max] I really think we're a great team.
The perfect match.

- Thanks, Max!
- I was talking to the car.

Guard down! Guard down!

- [g*n shot]
- [crowd screaming]

- [g*n shot]
- Max!

[closing theme playing]
