Damiano Guerinoni first denied
that he had ever met Yara.

But we know for a fact

that not only did he know her,

but his mother, Aurora Zanni,

had worked at Yara's house as her nanny,

and became friends with Maura Gambirasio.

How long did you work for them?

A few years.

[Oliva] Damiano Guerinoni
was abroad the day of Yara's m*rder.

So it became quite clear
that he couldn't be Suspect One.

This led to a massive manhunt,
worthy of a novel,

because although Damiano Guerinoni's DNA
didn't belong to Suspect One,

it had many elements in common with it.

It then became quite clear

that one of Damiano Guerinoni's relatives

would have to be the infamous Suspect One.

when you have identified a person…

…and you know his name and surname,
you can extend the search to relatives…

in the area,

along with the presence
of the best forensic police specialists,

would undoubtedly have made it possible…

…to, in just a few days, trace all
male relatives of Damiano Guerinoni.

And we all agreed
that within 24 to 48 hours,

we would be able to close the case.

is originally from Gorno,

a small village in the Val del Riso,
adjacent to the Seriana Valley.

They begin the search
by doing a thorough sampling of the DNA

of that entire family group.

[journalist] How did
the Guerinoni family react

after being associated
with this horrible crime?

It was a total shock, because
I don't believe it and I never will.

-However, you know, I wouldn't bet on it.

[journalist] Have you been asked
for a DNA test?

Of course they asked me.

The police came here
in plain clothes and took the swab.

to identify Pierpaolo Guerinoni,

Damiano's cousin,

who had many characteristics
that closely matched Suspect One.

to pressure the prosecutor's office.

can follow the case more closely.

by attorney Pelillo,

who at the time represented
the injured party, the Gambirasio family.

Yara's parents felt the need to work
with a geneticist they could trust,

so they called me.

from the family group, the father.

He was a subject
who had been deceased for 12 years.

-[man 1] He was a normal young man.

A very nice and cheerful person.

All work, and nothing else. A family guy.

I'd say perfect.

I mean, like I have with my children.

Of course he was away most of the time,
he was a… bus driver.

He'd come and go,
and would come back when he could.

That's it, really.

[Nicolì] We decided
to ask Giuseppe Guerinoni's family

to check if there was something at home

that could contain his DNA.

And we actually found
some personal belongings,

but most importantly, a driver's license.

This license was a turning point
in this phase of the investigation,

because it was a very old license,

one of those that required
the application of a stamp

that you have to lick to glue it on.

Incredibly, the forensic police
managed to recover some material

from this DNA fragment that led
to Giuseppe Guerinoni's identification

as the father of Suspect One.

We demand further investigations
into this hypothetical kinship,

in order to effectively determine
whether this person

is the father of the unknown individual
whose DNA was found on Yara's clothes.

I had strong doubts
regarding this alleged father

because the identifying markers were below
those allowed by the guidelines.

So, I couldn't say
that he was the biological father.

I asked for Mr. Guerinoni's exhumation

in order to analyze a bone from the body,

compare it with Suspect One,

and make sure that he was indeed
the biological father.

[journalist 1] The Gambirasios family's
consultants have long been calling

for the man's body to be exhumed.

[journalist 2] Do you agree with
the exhumation of your brother's body?

I've always said it, to get to the truth,
I'll do whatever it takes.

I'm just not obsessing every day,
thinking, "Is it him? Is it not?"

"Is it this, or that?"

Enough already. If this thing
has to be done, let it be done.

At least we can finally end
all this and move on.

Since my role is to cooperate
with the prosecutor's office,

and not get in their way,

I hope that the public prosecutor
will authorize our request.

We have no doubt.

Exhuming the corpse is not necessary.

years have passed since Yara's m*rder.

Last December,
Yara's mother wrote to the president

to complain about the lack
of cooperation from investigators.

prosecutors on behalf of the Quirinale.

had to write to Mr. Napolitano to protest.

Imagine that.

They turned to
the President of the Republic to say,

"We are the family, and the prosecutor's
office isn't telling us anything."

the investigation into the m*rder of Yara.

Unexpectedly, the Bergamo prosecutor's
office ordered the exhumation

of the body of the biological father
of the alleged m*rder*r

of the girl from Brembate di Sopra.

of Guerinoni was exhumed this morning.

Within minutes, the coffin
has been pulled out of its grave

by public workers
and forensic police agents.

Analyzing Mr. Guerinoni's DNA,

the paternity probability index
went from a 99.87%

our hypothetical baseline,

to a 99.99999987.

Six nines after the decimal point,
which allowed us to establish

and secure the biological paternity
of Suspect One.

In 1966, before turning 20,
she married Giovanni Bossetti.

In the fall of 1970,
Laura Letizia and Massimo were born

after a series of failed attempts
to have a family.

Shortly after, a third child was born.

A Mama's boy. He's always
been attached to his family.

He played outdoors with his friends,

with a ball,
with toy cranes, with marbles.

with my parents and my siblings,

the love and affection

that a family could possibly give.

My father was rather stern,

while my mother was busy
granting all of our wishes.

Massimo started working early in life.

He's always handed over his paycheck
to the family until he got married.

He still enjoyed his childhood,
he would go out dancing.

If I told him to be home by 11:00,
he would. They were always on time.

Exactly. Laura, being twins, you are the
same age, and you've seen him grow up.

We were always together.

My twin sister was very protective.
Still is very protective.

your brother is innocent?

Yes, 100%.

Not because I'm his twin,
not because he's my brother,

but I know what he's really like.

Our idea of entertainment
was running in the fields

with a kite, and spotting planes,

and trying to capture them
between our fingers.

you must suffer more.

The whole town is suffering. Everyone is.

[Oliva] As a teen,
how about his relationships with girls?

One day, he said,
"I met Mr. Guerinoni and asked him

in the morning, and he agreed."

That's how I met him.

I'd get in the car and we'd say,
"Good morning," and that's it.

-[Ester] Yeah, sure.

How often did he give you a ride?

Six months. Only six months.

I've always thought it was a bus ride.
But you were riding in his car.

-[Ester] By car. In the morning.

he wasn't exactly a saint.

He hung out at this place
in the pine forest.

And he had an extramarital affair,
from which he had a child.

When he went out,
he was always accompanied by women.

this park hotel.

It was one of the first…

I won't say "red-light clubs,"

but it was still
a much-talked-about venue,

At the time, a bus driver was like

And among all the people
they drive around,

there's always a young girl
that they fancy.

It was something of that sort.

when I went home.

[Oliva] And was it always driven
by Guerinoni?

Yes, but when we got off,

What happened
when you took the first test?

They called you, and you went?

By the way, I accompanied her to
the police headquarters to take the test.

Very at ease, without any issue,
without any thought, or any worry.

In fact, the test came out negative.

with these 532 hypothetical mothers

with Suspect One turned out negative.

So that means that within these 532 women,

none of them were Suspect One's
biological mother.

It was a game of chutes and ladders.
We go back to square one.

You find yourself in the dark

just when you thought
you were one step away from the solution.

The investigators didn't know
what else to come up with

in order to justify their own failure.

since Yara Gambirasio's death
and the discovery of her body.

Many who expected
the case to be resolved quickly…

a phone call that will allow us,
among other things,

to give real answers
to our other children.

We live in the hope
that even after three years,

those who have seen or heard something,

even a tiny detail
that they consider irrelevant,

will come forward without fear.

We have faith in human justice,
as well as divine justice,

and we anxiously await for the individual
responsible for this horrific act,

which caused us such agonizing grief,

to finally be brought to justice

so he can't harm anyone else.

in direct contact with them,

especially with Maura, the mother.

Unfortunately, no one
can give her her daughter back.

The only thing we can do… is deliver them

the person, who did this.

a gentleman arrives at our newspaper.

He was a collaborator, and he says,

"In my opinion, you'll make a breakthrough
if you talk to a certain gentleman."

This man's name was Negroni.

This man says to us,
"Bring something to drink."

Therefore, in between all the drinks,
he told us the stories.

[journalist] What did Mr. Guerinoni
confess to you?

That he had, let's say,
dated a woman sporadically?

It was one of those stupid
things that happen,

like going out at night
and having some fun.

Something like that could happen.

-So, like an occasional fling.
-But I don't know--

Because he was my friend. That's all.

But had he also confided
in someone else about it?

Someone said to me,

that she's not Suspect One's mother.

that the test has to be redone,

that a mistake had been made.

the comparison was not being made

with Suspect One's mitochondrial DNA,
but with Yara's.

Therefore, understandably,
the comparison yielded no results.

and the comparison between Ester Arzuffi

and the nuclear DNA of Suspect One
led not only to the match,

that is, Ester Arzuffi
was the mother of Suspect One,

but also to the discovery that, for years,

the roughly 1,800 DNA tests
had been mistakenly compared

not with the DNA of Suspect One,
but with the DNA of Yara,

including that of Ester Arzuffi.

Once the mother
was identified in just a few hours,

we also identified Suspect One.

First of all, I wasn't the kind of woman
